Never have I laughed so much or so loud when reading a romance novel. Ms. Laurenston manages to mesh the best elements of a romance--heart, heat, and hilarity--to produce one of the best books I've read all year. I know my patrons will be thrilled when this arrives.
The Honey Badger Chronicles #2, I didn't get a chance to read the first book in the series but after starting this one I didn't feel it absolutely necessary to read the first. It explains well enough how the three sisters came to be especially since one is full honey badger, Max very protective and very violent, the oldest, Charlie, is half wolf and basically a helicopter mom for the sisters, and the youngest sister Stevie is half tiger and she's... well this is her book.
Stevie is a former child prodigy in science and music but like many geniuses she has extreme social and anxiety issues. Shen was initially hired to be the bodyguard for a sixteen year old child prodigy, Kyle who lives with the sisters and whose only real friend is Stevie, but when Stevie gets asked to look into one of her ex-boyfriends because he may or may not be experimenting on hybrids like her Shen feels it's his duty to protect Stevie.
The plot takes a roundabout way of getting to the point because the characters keep getting distracted by other things, like all the sisters having to go in to see psychologist, someone hugs Stevie she freaks out and shifts and almost tears a house apart, there's a death in the family and they have to deal with honey badger drama, and of course there is the romance between Stevie and Shen. Shen is physically attracted to Stevie but he had a hard time reconciling the fact that he is older and she's freaking brilliant and he's not. Stevie doesn't care the cat part of her has already claimed him as hers it takes her literally throwing herself at him before he gets the message.
Overall, it was a great book. If you've read Shelly Laurenston before you know her style humor if not you are in for a treat, as long as you like strong, foul mouthed, sassy, crazy women who can hold their own in a fight, and in Max's case fight dirty. I love Laurenston's female characters and the guys aren't too shabby either they are strong enough to hold their own against the women and smart enough to understand them. Her writing is adventurous, humorous, and hot as heck, I still have a bunch of her books I need to read but every single one that I have read I've loved.
Cute read, and a good follow up to Hot and Badgered. I was pleasantly surprised at how Stevie and Shen clicked, although to me this was less about them as a couple, and more of a mystery and action caper. My main complaint is the miracle medicine that Stevie gets that appears to almost completely "cure" her. Seemingly overnight she goes from nonfunctional to slightly quirky. Ignoring that this was an entertaining adventure and I'm looking foreward to Max's story. 3.5 Stars
I love shen and have been waiting for his book since he was introduced in the pride series. I didn't expect him with stevie but they made a great match and are so cute together. I can't wait for max's book!! This book and series is a definite must read!
Love this series and author no matter what she writes. This book is no exception. Loved it. Great characters and chemistry
I received an advanced reader's copy of In a Badger Way by Shelly Laurenston from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was the second book of the Honey Badger series - first being Hot and Badgered - and it was HILARIOUS. I'm so glad it wasn't a let down from the first fantastic book in the series. [I really cannot wait for the third book staring their middle sister, Max!] The first book made me laugh, but In a Badger Way made me snort water through my nose while reading and attempting to take a drink.
The main characters, Stevie the genius honey badger/tiger shifter and Shen the giant panda, have fantastic banter and their chemistry just clicks. I like how Shen balances Stevie and helps her gain control of herself or her surroundings without being overbearing.
All in all, In a Badger Way was a very entertaining read. It was fast paced with the plot and the steamy scenes really were hot. Five stars!
Is it March yet???
Ok, so I just finished the copy I received from Netgalley. And can I just say- Worth It!! The story was fun, and brought both Magnus Pack and Pride series characters in on the story, and left tons of places this could go in the future. Also- I really want to see Dee Ann and Max team up for something. That could be both epic and terrifying at the same time. I also would love to see what Dutch really gets up to when he disappears. Also- never mess with badgers. For those of you who have never read anything in this series, I’d recommend starting at the Magnus Pack, and then go to the Pride books, but you’ll still enjoy the heck out of it.
This is a wonderful entry in the author’s Honey Badger Chronicles. The women are fearless, reckless, and hilarious. I love the dynamic between the three sisters, though it is a little dysfunctional. That does add to the humor though.
Laurenston is very talented at developing a rich and multifaceted world of shifters. I have found the shape shifting genre to be a little saturated with similar stories but this series is original and fun to read.
I also love the relationships she creates. The men do not seek to control the women or hold them back in any way. The romance unfolds in an interesting way and is also wonderfully steamy!
I would not suggest someone dive in to the series with this book simply because the cast is large and confusing without the foundation laid in the first book. If you haven’t read Charlie and Berg’s book, what are you waiting for?! You can catch up to this one, have a wonderful time reading it, and then eagerly await the third!
I love this series. I re-read these books about 20 times throughout the year and wait for the next one to be released.
In this book we get a new story but also see what is happening in the lives of characters introduced in previous books. These books are a hoot...the characters make the story. Loved it, already reread twice.
Manic! Hilarious! Shelly Laurenston does it again. In a Badger Way is the crazy wonderful tale of genius tiger/honey badger hybrid Stevie MacKilligan falling in love with cute panda shifter Shen Li. I love the MacKilligan sisters and their insane brand of love but Shen never sees it coming. This story will leave your sides hurt from laughing and your heart filled with love. A must read.
Filled with laugh-out-loud moments, tension, action, and some steamy moment In a Badger Way is a solid addition to the Honey Badger Chronicles. I devoured this book. Shen is adorable and Stevie grew on me as she made efforts to meet her new therapist’s recommendations. Their romance was reminiscent of the "stray-dog it" comment Stevie made to Berg in Hot and Badgered with a delightful little twist to fit Stevie's character. The running jokes and cameos make this world a treasure.
As a veteran reader and fan of Shelly Laurenston’s work, I know to expect a fast-paced book with several perspective jumps within a chapter. I enjoy seeing everyone’s thoughts and the behind the scenes actions but in this book, I think this style worked against the story. I was disappointed that Shelly didn’t spend more time with Stevie’s attempts to go undercover as it was listed as the main plot point. When we finally reached that portion, it was warp speed and I didn’t get to enjoy Stevie’s badassery the same as with her sisters.
Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed Shen and Stevie’s romance and I can hardly wait to read Max’s book and more spin-offs after that! I will be crowing about this book until we start receiving news about the next installment! I truly hope Laurenston continues writing in this world as I would love to read more about Toni’s siblings and Dutch’s family.
This book should come with a warning label, -Beware you will laugh out loud, roll your eyes, and never want to put it down. Within In a Badger Way, Stevie MacKilligan, child prodigy and honey badger/tiger hybrid, burrows her way into your heart. With severe panic attacks and bouts of depression, Stevie often jumps and overreacts to any sudden movement especially bears. Her sisters Charlie and Max have left a trail of bodies protecting their baby sister from all the people who want to use her brain for evil. Her best friend is another child prodigy and Stevie finds his bodyguard too sexy for his own good. Shen, giant panda and bodyguard extraordinaire, thought his life with the jackels he was insane, he quickly finds himself in over his head when Stevie declares him her boyfriend. With a giant tiger striped honey badger that constantly burrows, a family that rather kill you than look at you, and an evil scientist that wants to destroy hybrid shifters, Shen's days quickly become so much more than hanging upside down from a tree eating bamboo. Totally crazy and hilarious, Shen and Stevie will keep you entertained as giant pandas and honey badgers become the all time greatest shifters in paranormal fiction. Thank you Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I love this author and was excited to read her latest book. What a disappointment! It was so confusing! Multiple points of views and time lines. Everyone fighting and arguing, I couldn't tell who was good or bad. Just a mess of a story. Did not enjoy it.
Shelly Laurenston’s shifter books are always hilarious, violent and hot, and this is no exception. I didn’t expect to enjoy Stevie as a heroine, and a certain amount of magical medication does help her along, but she and Shen are a delight. Even more so, the exploration of mental health, confidence, and creative accomplishment was very thoughtful. The honey badger sisters are a lot of fun to ride along with. Tough enough to terrify ordinary shifters, ridiculous enough to make me laugh out loud, and each with her own competencies that keep things interesting. I’ll definitely be back for Max’s story, and any other adventures Laurenston is kind enough to gift us.
This family of honey badgers is absolutely my favorite read. Full of snarky dialog, sibling fights, action, great mystery, and shifters...lots of great shifters. Stevie, the youngest sister and genius savant in just about everything, finds her Zen and love in Shen the giant panda shifter bodyguard. We get to see lots of Stevie shift into her giant self, and over the top family hate dynamics, and it makes this a 5 star bomb of a novel. Great story, baby cliffhanger. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book from Netgalley.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for granting my request for an ARC of this book. The review below is entirely my own opinion.
After book 1 Hot and Badgered, I couldn't wait to get my hands on the next one in the series because that's how much I loved that story. And guess what? I love this one just as much!
I knew from meeting Stevie in the first book that I was in for a really interesting and entertaining book. And it didn't disappoint! (I was half-afraid of that, you know.... bec sometimes when the 1st book in an interconnected series blows your mind, the one right after may not be as good as you expected. But this 2nd book in this new series by Shelly Laurenston was freaking good! So I'm totally relieved in the best way possible.)
I didn't want to put it down. I couldn't put it down. I was also grinning like a fool the whole time I was reading, snort-laughing-out-loud at times. So damn fun!
While in other books I don't like how there are too many secondary characters who have voices bec their presence distracts or takes away from telling the romance between the MC's; I feel, ever since book 1, that the presence of the supporting cast makes the story of these MC's stronger and more engaging. The way that the secondary characters are woven into the story feel integral to the world building but not in an annoying or distracting way. I love seeing the depth and strength of the bond between the sisters. I loved getting to know Max, Kyle, Charlie, Berg, Cooper, Dutch, and the others more.
And Shen?? Gah. I already thought he was adorable in book 1. But he totally stole my heart in this book. I loved him! I mean... What's not to love about a giant panda shifter hottie who is kind and smart and able to handle Stevie and her sisters??? I tell you. Swoony and oh-so-hot!
If you liked Hot and Badgered, book 1 of the Honey Badger Chronicles, I would definitely recommend that you read this book.
I received a free copy of IN A BADGER WAY (The Honey Badger Chronicles) by Shelly Laurenston, through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review. Shen Li, panda shifter, is guarding the body of arrogant genius prodigy Kyle Jean-Louis Parker, jackal shifter. Since Kyle’s family has decided he’d “be more comfortable” lodging with the MacKilligan sisters, Shen Li spends a lot of time around Kyle’s only friend Stevie. Of the MacKilligan sisters, Stevie is indisputably brilliant, beautiful, and the “nice one.” She’s also prone to brawl with her sisters, freak out at the sight of bears, panic, and shift into a two-ton, tiger-striped, honey badger when panicked. Shen’s having trouble focusing on guarding Kyle because Shen just can’t get Stevie to stop cuddling his panda adorableness. Meanwhile, the entire MacKilligan clan is gathering for a family event, someone is killing hybrids (again), kidnapping is a frequent theme, and daddy’s back in town.
Another awesome novel! I still enjoy Shelly Laurenston’s shifter books. I like the silliness and adore the ridiculousness. If you love the other books, you’ll love this one, too! It looks like once the honey badgers are matched up, the older Jean-Louis Parkers may be next.

Another amazing read by Shelly Laurenston, you will laugh and giggle your way through this one. I am loving the honey badgers they are just so wacky and homicidal that you can help but love them. One of my favorite things about the writing is that the more flawed the characters the more, we come to love them.
I received a ARC of the book in exchange for a honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I've been waiting to read this book since I read Charlie's book. However, I did not enjoy Stevie's and Shen's book nearly as much as I did Charlie's. I've been looking forward to Shen's book in particular (he's my fav character) for forever and I think I got my hopes up. My issue isn't with Stevie and Shen, who seem to be perfect for each other; Shen is a giant panda and is melo to pretty much anything which counters Stevie's tendency to have panic or anxiety attacks. My issue is that the point of view keeps switching over to Charlie and what feels like a million other characters. It's jarring each and everytime it happens. This has happened in previous books but never to this extent. I honestly felt that only 20-30 percent of the book actually involved Shen and Steve in the actual scenes. Which is annoying as this is their book. The info the reader learns from these POVs is required for the plotline but I wish it was done in a way that the main characters are still the main characters.
And just because I liked Charlie's book better in no means I didn't love this book. I did. So much. Which is why the book gets a 3.5/5 stars instead of a lower score. This is probably because of She . The writing of Shen is so well done throughout the series and in this book. He's my favorite. I love how he uses his bamboo chewing to drive away other shifters. It's so clever. I just want to squeeze him. He's so cute. And adorable. He makes me want a giant panda shifter boyfriend. Shen made the book worth it and I'm so happy he got Stevie in his live. He deserves a HEA.
I can't wait to see who Max gets in her book. I keep thinking Dutch despite all the evidence that says he is a like a brother to her. I still think there is something there.
****Minor spoiler***** my favorite part was when Stevie insisted Shen was her boyfriend whether he agreed or not. Oh and the ending made me laugh.
More entertaining as a convoluted mystery than a romance, In a Badger Way continues from where Hot and Badgered left off. Stevie and Shen don't so much fall in love as they pretend to be dating, wind up having sex regularly, and then admit feelings are involved.
Stevie is a genius, especially in science and music. She can also turn into a massive honey badger/tiger hybrid that everyone finds terrifying (and can do a lot of damage if she panics and burrows into walls). At the beginning of this book, her anxiety meds are no longer working and she has to find a new therapist and prescription. In the meantime, her family drama continues and she and her sisters have been called to attend a relative's funeral. Is their dad dumb enough to show up? Why am I even asking?
Shen is a bodyguard for Kyle Jean-Louis, a young teenage genius sculptor who we have previously met as well. Kyle remains an ass who does need a bodyguard because he does seem to bring out everyone's instinct to kill. Shen is the first panda shifter to be a main character and he's a delight. Laid back, happy to constantly munch on bamboo, good at his job, super chill to handle all the incessant drama that comes with Stevie and her family.
It's recommended that you read Hot and Badgered first for the back story. You'll also see a lot of characters from Laurenston's other books. Have I mentioned how much I love Irene? Delighted so see her have so much page time in this book. I have no idea who Max is going to wind up with and am very intrigued to see if it's someone who's already in the books or someone new.
