This is the first book I've read by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I didn't realize this was a spinoff of another series, but it definitely didn't matter. I was able to follow everything, but it does make me want to go back and find the other books.
This book definitely isn't perfect. There were some things that were easy to see coming, but there was one thing that surprised me. I had vibes of Shadowhunters (angels, demons, protectors, compound/institute type living) and Vampire Academy (Rose and Dimitri's relationship and snark). But there were a lot of different things. I really loved that there were gargoyles, but different than other books I've read with them.
Trinity was a special person, half human, and half something else. It takes awhile for us to find out what she is, but it was pretty obvious to me early on. She lives with Wardens and doesn't leave their home. She trains and is bonded to one Warden, Misha. They can make each other stronger and Misha can tell when she's in trouble. At least when they are close by. If Misha dies, the bond is broken and a new Warden is found. If Trinity dies, Misha dies, too. Trinity was a super snarky character and I love how she challenged and annoyed everyone around her. She could also see ghosts and spirits. She had a resident ghost, Peanut, that wouldn't leave her. Their relationship made me laugh a lot.
Weird things have been happening. Lower level demons were appearing when they never came up to the surface. Only high level demons did because they could pass as human. A group of three men from DC came to visit and ask for help. They have something that is killing both Wardens and Demons, but they didn't know what it was or how to stop it. One of the Wardens, Zayne, had an immediate reaction to Trinity. They both felt like they knew each other, but had never met. Zayne is also different because he has light blue eyes when all Wardens had dark eyes. Even though they both drive each other crazy, Trinity starts feeling close to Zayne. After there is an attack by humans and demons and a Warden is taken, Trinity decides to go to DC and try to get him back.
While in DC, Trinity stays with Zayne and they patrol together. She meets a couple demons and a half demon, plus some witches. She was taught that all demons were evil, but these ones had her questioning what she was taught. She could see that demons could actually love. Zayne and Roth work together. Roth can tell what Trinity is, but he still decides to help. The group works together to investigate, but they never imagined what they would find at the end. And things are only going to get worse.
I don't want to get into more because I'm afraid I'd spoil it, but the ending was interesting and I'm really looking forward to the second book.
Warnings: There is talk to sex, sexual acts, a sexual assault that was stopped, talk of naked demons and body parts, fighting and blood. Trinity also has an eye disease and it going blind (make sure to read the author's note on this, too). There is a lot of fighting, death, talks of heaven and hell, angels and demons, and betrayal.
I gave this book 4 1/2 stars rounded up to 5 on goodreads. Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for my copy for review.
I did not finish this book, I made it to probably half way through It before I just could not force my way any further.
I have plenty of books by this author on my shelves, so when I saw the title and was approved for it I did a little happy dance in my head.
Unfortunately the story just did not do it for me. It fell flat. While I loved the cover it just was not up to par with the writing I had come to expect of Jennifer Armentrout.
So I put it down for now, but I will pick it back up at a later date to give it another chance in case my fancy changes.
Storm and Fury is probably now one of my favorite books by Jennifer. I knew about the authors eye condition but I didn’t know how much she struggled with her eyesight and the fact that we get a fictional character that has the same eye condition as Jennifer and struggles the same was like peaking into the authors soul. You feel so much with Trinity and she’s amazing and I love that she tries so hard and never gives up. This book has my heart just as do Trinity and Zayne.
I sat on the thoughts of this book for a couple of days because I didn't want to automatically jump and be I like "I loved it!" to only be like "I really wasn't crazy about it!" a few days later like I've been about a few other of Jen's books recently. If you loved Jen's White Hot Kiss trilogy then you are going to love Storm and Fury. I found Storm and Fury to be good, but I didn't wow me. I felt like the pacing was of and it took more then half of the book before anything worth of mentioning to happen. Overall I expected more from Jen, considering I am a huge fan of her writing, But this is also where I question: Is it the writing or is it the fact that I am getting older?
This book was pure magic. Fast paced and fantastic from page one. loved every single second of this amazing read and would highly recommend to all fantasy and romance lovers.
Jennifer Armentrout's Storm and Fury (The Harbinger, #1) was a really fun read. I think the author did a really good job in creating a fun YA urban fantasy novel.
18-year-old Trinity Marlow lives in a compound somewhere in the hills of West Virginia. She's been taken in by a Thierry and his husband Matthew. She's a "human" in a compound that trains Wardens, supernatural creatures who can look human until they turn into their stone featured, gargoyle counterparts to help humanity from demons and other supernatural baddies. Although the people in the compound see Trinity as "only human," she's much more than that. And her assigned protector, Misha, definitely has his handsful protecting her from herself and supernatural threats.
In many ways, it's hard to further describe this novel without giving any major plot points away, so I'm going to stop there with my overview of the book itself.
As for my literary analysis, the version I read was provided to me by the publisher prior to the publication of the book itself for my review. My analysis is 100% my own and not affected by the publisher. So, here goes. I liked it. It's a fun, quick read. I definitely see this book (and the eventual series) as having a nice niche in the YA urban fantasy market. Trinity is enough of a heroine that you want to like her, but at times she's also ridiculous imperfect (like most of us). Except for "her gift," she's a normal 18-year-old trying to make it through the world. I think the writing was good and propelled the story nicely. I didn't see any inconsistencies in the plot, which is always nice. I also think the author did a good job of laying out hints along the way that nicely led up to the climax of the book itself. I also think the author set up the rest of the series nicely with the conclusion of the narrative. I definitely look forward to seeing where this series goes next.
It was refreshing getting back into this world Jennifer L Armentrout created. The author does an amazing job at bringing her world to life, it can be easy to get lost in this world while reading. Although Storm and Fury followed a new main character, we still get to see some of the characters we grew to love in the dark elements series- especially one in particular.
I was dying to find out what Trinity's secret was throughout most of the book, and was definitely engrossed in her story. This book was full of action and fun and sass we can come to expect from Jennifer L Armentrout!
5 Blinded stars
I have been a fan of this author since her series Lux and even going back and reading her backlist I am surprised it took me til that series to fall in love with her writing. This book has a vibe like Lux so if you were into that series but you wanted it a little less YA and more NA this is probably a very good paring for you. This series as it appears is all about the incoming Harbinger. This book is a big one topping over 500 pages and surprisingly there is still so much more story to be had! Presently on GoodReads there is no indication of how many books will be in this series. But I enjoy the uniqueness of it. We have a species called Wardens which are gargoyle shapeshifters that appear human whose main goal is to protect humans from demons of all kind. But the Wardens are hiding their own secret named Trinity. This story is filled with hurt, betrayal, fighting, loss and the power of love and every element in between. This story also provides a bit of adult action with the paring of Zayne and Trinity their connection is like a storm and fury its swoonworthy. This book isn’t lux but this book does not let us down. There is so much mystery and unknown still. I am ready for MORE !
This was so unlike anything I've read before, and the world, characters, and plot of the book were amazing. I so look forward to the next book and what is to come!
Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I was so excited to read this because it was one of my favorite worlds that Jennifer Armentrout has created. Even though the story started off slow and slightly painful it really picked up steam towards the end and I can’t wait to read the next book in the series.
The main character, Trinity, spends the first half of the book feeling sorry for herself and acting immature. She’s living in a warden community and has special powers that aren’t explained until what feels like halfway through the story. I really didn’t care for her character until almost the end of the book and, by then, she grew on me and really developed into a strong, badass girl.
Roth and Layla make appearances but not in the annoying spin-off way where they’re an obligatory mention. They added to the story but weren’t the main focus.
The plot got better and better as the story went on and eventually the real big bad is introduced at the end but not explained. Overall, this book feels like an introduction and leaves the reader wanting more after slogging through the overly long first half. I’m definitely looking forward to the second book!
*Thanks to netgallery and the publisher for providing an advance copy.
All of the characters in this book are great. They all compliment each other well, especially Trinity and Zayne. I loved the way he bickered back and forth. Both of them so quick with comebacks. There are many secrets throughout the book and a few surprises. I was not expecting Trinity's dad to be who it was and the turn of events with Misha completely caught me by surprise. I also enjoyed reading the authors take on Nephilim.
The only issue I had with the book were the similarities between it and The Mortal Instruments series. I happened to be reading them at the same time and was getting the 2 books confused. Many of the characters are very similar in attitude and appearance. I even found some situations similar. As I said before, I really enjoyed the authors take on Nephilim and because of this, and the fabulous ending, I look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Gargoyles are alive. These stone warriors have a mission to save humanity from the demons that threaten the world. They are the Wardens. Trinity is not a Warden but a secret weapon guarded for when her angel father calls her to battle. Just when she realizes that her bonded guardian, Misha, might not have been a willing partner, he is taken by a demon. Desperate to save him, she pairs with Zayne, a gorgeous Warden with secrets of his own. The more time she spends with him, the more she falls for him and begins to question everything she has believed her entire life. She starts to realize that what she has been taught might not have been all there was to learn.
Living gargoyles, angels, demons, witches; romance, danger, mystery, soul-searching, secrets, and tattooed snakes: the book has it all. Fans of Kami Garcia, PC Cast, and Cassandra Clare will love this book.
This was not my normal read but I have read books by Armentrout in the past so wanted to give it a shot, I did enjoy it and thought it was a fun read. My opinion might have been more favorable if I had read the other series, I believe this is a spin off.
Oh wow! What an awesome story! I love JLA's work and this one did NOT disappoint! It was action packed, intense, intriguing, witty, mysterious, sexy, and heartbreaking. I loved meeting the new characters, but I REALLY loved seeing the old characters from The Dark Elements series as well.
Trinity is a complete bad@ss, a tad selfish at times, protective, brave, and witty. Yet she isn't "perfect". She has a "flaw" and that makes her so much more human and I could connect more with her. I liked seeing her feistiness whenever Zayne would say something to her that would annoy her.
Zayne, oh sweet, sexy, protective Zayne. I liked him in The Dark Elements series, but I LOVED him in this story. He wasn't quite so innocent, was a bit more rough and tough and I really liked that! I liked that he didn't hold Trinity back because she was female or because of her disability, like so many others would have in his position.
All in all, this was a wonderful beginning to a new series and I can't wait to read more!
So I admit I requested this not knowing that one of the main characters is featured in another series The Dark Elements Trilogy. So I might have missed some previous character development and world building.
Anyhoo onto the review I honestly felt very meh about this book and I am not sure if its because I didn't read the other trilogy or it felt like her other books. The leads have fun banter and the male lead is a total dream boat etc.. etc.. I was hoping that this book would break the JLA mould and it didn't. I do think the author is great at her paranormal world building. she definitely writes a highly believable world. And I will hand it to her that she knows how to write a steamy romance. Trinity was also a nice MC, she lost her mum and is facing an eye disease that will eventually leave her blind and that she is also a very powerful human being and none of these factors ever get in the way of her suffering from special snowflake syndrome.
Overall I found this to be an adequate read. It did its job though I was entertained but not in love. I do think JLA fans will devour this book.
Wow this book was just so good and so easy to get lost in. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and I just didn't want it to end. I just couldn't get enough of these wonderful characters and I just loved getting to see their journey. I will most definitely be reading more stories from this wonderful author.
'm going to be honest and say I never read the original series this is a spin off for, but I do own it. And now that I read this book I have a BURNING NEED to read it. Holy hell Jennifer does it again. I was so sucked into this book I finished it in less than 24 hours. (Don't ask me how much sleep I got, it wasn't enough but it was worth it.)
Trinity is kickass and very full of herself but I loved her so much. And you know what? She has the right to be full of herself. Her unique predicament puts her above the Wardens and I loved seeing the dynamic of them and how she played into their world. Pretty much Wardens are gargoyles who are on the "holy" side of a never-ending cosmic war to keep the balance between good and evil on Earth. Humans have an inherit right to free will and Wardens try their best to make sure nothing gets in that way. Namely Demons, and the like. Where does Trinity fit into all this? You'll have to read the book to find out because it's massive and also a total plot twist near the end of the book. But I guarantee it's worth it!
This story has it all. Drama, slow building romance, tension, a ton of action, and very very witty and fun characters. This might be a slight spoiler so highlight to view: when she and Zayne start working with demons I loved it! They were so FUN. I also really enjoyed the use of other supernatural characters like the witches. I'm hoping we will see more but who knows. The story is definitely fun enough with what it has.
Would I buy this book? YESSSSS I'm pre-ordering it ASAP
Would I recommend it? YES OMG YES
Would I re-read it? I'm definitely going to have to reread this before the next one comes out and I'm not complaining. ;)
Freaking amazing!! Like wow!! Storm and Fury is the beginning of a sequel series of the Dark Elements series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. It was so much fun revisiting this world she created. We had a ton of familiar faces, like Layla, Roth, and of course, Zayne who is one of the main focuses of this book. Our heroine is a new one and she is Trinity. Trinity is an awesome character. A total bad ass like Layla and very unique in the world of Wardens and demons. I loved the introduction to what I think will be a really great series. And what was even cooler was that Armentrout based an important part of Trinity off herself. Showing that you may be born with something but that doesn't mean it will stop you from living your life to the best it can be. It was really moving. So this story, like I said was pretty cool. We are back in the world of gargoyles and demons and Trinity is something unique to them all. Which I will not say because spoilers! This book takes place about seven months after The Dark Elements books ended and there is something out in the world killing both demons and gargoyles. When Trinity's home is attacked and her friend taken, she is determined to find him. Zayne was visiting Trinity's clan, when her friend was taken. There is an instant spark between the Zayne and Trinity, a pull between them that is stronger than they have ever felt before. And though Zayne is still trying to work through everything from the previous series, even he can't deny the pull he feels toward Trinity. They work together to find out what happened to Trinity's friend and recruit some old friends to help them along the way. Action, romance, and plot twists that you honestly do not see coming, this book was just...wow! I cannot wait to get my hands on the next one. If you haven't read the series before this one, definitely do! You'll understand the world and all the characters a lot better. Great, great book!
I received an ARC for an honest review.

I am a huge Jennifer L. Armentrout fan, but this book started off rough for me and didn't ensnare me like her other novels did. The first part of the book the main character fights off a guy she shouldn't be able to but while this was a basic description the manner that it takes place in seems valgur and shallow. I also feel like there is some big secret and something is afoot, but it is a secret from the reader.
Anyway, from other reviews I have read on this book it seems most find it very enjoyable. I, regretfully, did not. That said, I will still read other novels by this writer as she is a very good writer.
I received this advanced reader copy in exchange for a fair review.
"Storm and Fury" is the story of Trinity, a 'supposed' human who is raised in a community of gargoyle shifters. I say 'supposed' because even though gargoyles are protectors against demons most of the community do not know what Trinity really is, although she is trained as a warrior.
For most of the book we are kept in the dark about Trinity's origins. With leaders and warriors from another gargoyle community visiting its super important for her to kept her true self hidden. Speaking of the visitors, that's where Zayne comes in. He is a main character in the author's other gargoyle shifter series, but you do not have to read that one to understand this story. I love Zayne! He has that mysterious, broody demeanor but he is also really interested in Trinity. The two of them are a fantastic pair!
Without giving too much of the story line away, Zayne and Trinity are paired up on a mission and that's when the story really gets good! Plus, Trinity is loosing her sight which adds an interesting, and realistic, twist to the tale.
This is classic writing for Ms. Armentrout. We get fantastic main characters, a cool supernatural aspect, and intriguing happenings throughout the book.
My one complaint is that the author tends to use too many pop culture references which can really take the reader outside the story if they are not familiar with what she is referencing.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.
