I received a free copy of this ARC from Harlequin TEEN (US & Canada) through Netgalley. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
OH MY GOSH!!! I loved this book so much!!! It's fun, fast paced and hooooottttt!!!! It's so hard for me to review a book when I enjoyed it this much, because all I want to do is sream!!! Ok, ok.
I've only read one other series by J.L. Armentrout, the Lux series and I did enjoy it but this was so much better! I heard that this book is set in the same universe as her other series and you need to read it to understand this one. But I honestly don't think so. I haven't read that other series (I'm forgetting the name) and had no problems understanding the world and everything in this one.
I loved all the characters, they felt like real people and not just characters. Trinity is so funny and sarcastic and also a badass who fights demons. Like wow, can I be her friend?
Misha is a very complex character and I really enjoyed getting to know him.
Zayne. Oh Zayne. He is so awesome! No other comments necessary.
There were also a lot of side characters and each got their own spotlight. I hope to see more of them in the next book.
I loved the world in this book. Such an epic mix of all the creatures. If you love paranormal, you'd definitely enjoy this one.
The only complaint I have about this book is the ending. It was a bit too convenient and unrealistic. (I mean, I know, it's a fantasy world full of gargoyles, what realistic ending am I talking about?) I don't want to spoil anything, so I'm just going to say that I didn't like the way a certain character acted in the end.
One thing that I loved and almost jumped up and clapped is when one character (I'm trying not to spoil anything) gives an actual verbal consent to a certain question, if you know what I mean (wiggles her eyebrows). It's just so nice to see this in books.
Overall, I absolutely loved it! I definitely recommend this book if you enjoy paranormal romance.
Also forgot to mention that the main character has a disability and she is still a total badass!! And there were also LGBTQ+ characters and I love it so much!!!
I enjoyed this book. It gave me a chance to reexperience a world that I enjoyed in The Dark Elements series. It mostly involved new characters but there were a few familiar characters.
The female protagonist is strong and capable despite her disability. There was just enough romance to be interesting without overshadowing the rest of the story. There was plenty of action, and several nail biting moments. There is a lot of suspense to this story. The author does a great job of keeping the reader guessing until the right moment. It did feel like it was drug out just a bit too long at some points and was sometimes predictable, but overall it was an enjoyable read.
I recommend this book and I also recommend that you read the acknowledgements once you finish the book. Reading the acknowledgements gave me a new appreciation for the main character and others like her.
Thank you to Harlequin TEEN (US & Canada). for the arc of this book.
This is the first book I have read by this author, and it won’t be the last!
I was hooked from the very first page to the last one, and the twist I never in a million years saw it coming!
I will be picking up the second in this series, as well as the Lux series by this author.
This had a bit of a rocky start but I have to say it managed to grow on me.
“Storm and Fury” takes on new mythology as gargoyles, yes you read that right, are known as Warden’s who protect the human race from demons and sometimes they take in strays who happen to be half human and half angel which is the perfect mix for a weapon that can destroy any creature, good or evil. As Trinity tries to keep her identity hidden a new clan comes to town bringing with it a greater demon hellbent on feasting on an angel and earning the key to heaven.
So this was a bit clunky for me in the beginning where I had to stop and double check that this wasn’t book 2 in a series because it starts as though we’ve been in this world longer than a minute and doesn’t catch us up until a couple chapters in and even then it’s a bit muddy. My biggest issue and I fully admit it will probably only be me and a handful of others who share in this eye roll are the super obvious shout outs to Supernatural from the clear references to some of the character names and this is coming from a fan of the show so prepare yourself for that.
I feel like Armentrout has a favorite trope when it comes to the two leads and if you’ve read anything by her you’re going to see that dynamic repeated here which gets kind of repetitive but it is what it is. I guess for me what sold it was some of their more quiet moments where they have real discussions about things and don’t let them simmer for a few chapters to build the angst which was refreshing and our lead has a very real, and in my experience rare for fiction, attribute where she’s diagnosed with an illness that is very human and not something magic or in this case angel blood can fix so I’m curious to see how that’s handled moving forward especially since it’s something the author also shares.
If your a fan of JLA’s other books you’re probably going to jump headfirst into this and love it too and if this is a first it’s a good enough start that gives you some new and interesting ya creatures to get behind as well as a little bit more adult type scenes that’s a nice surprise for a crowd that might be on the higher end of the age spectrum for this genre and I’m interested in seeing where it may lead!
**special thanks to the publishers and netgalley for providing an arc in exchange for a fair and honest review!**
First off, the page count for the ARC is way off. This bad-boy has 535 pages, not 300-whatever Goodreads has listed.
Second, I. LOVED. THAT.
It was so much fun to be back in this world with these characters—old AND new! I had the chance to read a very early version (only a few chapters), and while I enjoyed that one, THIS version knocked my socks off!
For real. It’s been a hot minute since a story has pulled me in and kept me reading until the early hours of the morning.
Storm and Fury has all of the elements fans have come to expect and love from a JLA book: a strong female MC, snarkalicious LI, witty banter, and a heaping dose of swoon. (Trinity+Zayne4eva)
I don’t want to say too much and risk spoiling anything, but what makes this story special is Trinity’s personal battle. We talk a lot about the importance of representation in literature, and it DOES matter, but too often we still judge things: people and stories, by what can only be seen or easily identified. For that reason, I hope readers will take the time to read the Author’s Note.
Fans of The Dark Elements series will not be disappointed! Speaking of, this is a spinoff and can be read without having read TDE, but I would encourage anyone new to the series or JLA (do those people actually exist? 😜) to read The Dark Elements before starting this one. You won’t regret it, I promise.
A snow day plus a new Armentrout? YASSSS!
I count on Armentrout. She consistently delivers witty, strong heroines and urban fantasy world-building that feels so right to me. I recommend her books often, especially to readers who just want to dip into a fantasy plot quickly without decoding complicated magical/world systems. You can truly open her fantasy books and just enjoy--my brain welcomes it.
Storm & Fury is part of the Dark Elements universe and while you needn't have read the other three books, knowing the past characters gave me squeals of delight when they popped into the story.
Trinity is a non-stop, action-y kind of girl and events in the book happen quickly. Her secrets, while not hard to decipher before the huge reveal, are interesting and add character depth. This book beautifully sets up the rest of the series and does not, thankfully, end on a cliffhanger. However, if I had the second book in my greedy, cozy, snow-day hands, I would have devoured it as well.
Just as a side note: JLA is so brave to pen a character with retinitis pigmentosa, a disorder the author struggles with herself. The portions of the book that deal with Trinity's failing eyesight are emotional and realistic. Take time to read her author’s note on the subject.
Thanks for the new series and a happy snow day, JLA. And thank to NetGalley and the publisher for my copy
