Wow! JLA knows how to write a book. I mean I are loved all her work so far, but this is the first series I have read of hers and I was a little hesitant going into the spin off. Only because she does such an amazing job of making you fall for Roth and want more from their story in the first series.
However, this story did not disappoint in the least. I do admit it felt a bit slow at first, but it was super understandable for the world and character building and getting those who haven't read the other series up to date.
I definitely did not think I was going to fall for Zayne especially after the last book in her first series in this world. But I came to love him just as I was conflicted over who to choose in the middle of the last series for Layla.
With Trinity we open up a whole new realm exploring more of the angels and that world. I love JLA bringing badass female leads on her books.
Literally threw me off with the plot twist at the end and I'm still having very conflicting emotions over the whole Mischa/Trinity, Zayne/Layla craziness that went on so that might take some more time to process.
The angst and desire had me melting at times as JLA does best and I literally am so excited to keep reading this series to explore this relationship and get more from Zayne.
This is Armentrout at her best! We thoroughly enjoyed exploring this new relationship in a world we've grown to love. We were looking for the absolute BEST young adult paranormal romance to include in our latest Scribbler subscription box for writers, and after only 100 pages into this one, we knew we'd found our winner. By the end, we were designing our entire box around the gem. Can't wait for the sequel!
This is the first book in the The Dark Elements spin-off series. Eighteen-year-old Trinity Marrow is the main character and she is a true heroine as we follow her in her adventure to go undetected by demons and other Wardens. If they find her, the will surely devour her in order to enhance their powers. Trinity has a special power of being able to communicate with ghosts and spirits. Her gift is such a secret that she has been hiding out in a compound guarded by Wardens so that no one will find her.
Trinity also has a degenerative disease that effects her eyesight and will eventually make her go blind. I think that is what makes her so much more of a heroine to me. Trinity is hiding for her life all while embracing this degenerative disease that she is having to deal with. Trinity doesn't let it stop her, she just does what she has to do.
Trinity has dreamed of being outside of the compound and able to live her life like a normal person but non of that seemed possible until she meet Zayne. While Zayne drives Trinity crazy, he is also the most intriguing person she has ever meet. Zayne and Trinity have such a great relationship and I loved the banter that went on between them. Zayne is tainted from his past, but he also doesn't let it stop him. He has manners and is honest. So unlike other characters we usually get in these types of books.
There are other characters too that make this story just flow and keeps you longing for the next chapter. I highly recommend this book if you love JLA or even if you just love YA.
I voluntarily read and reviewed this book. All opinions are my own. Thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for an advanced copy of this book!
So let me just start by saying that I was highly impressed with this book.
As much as I love this spin off series a lot of authors are doing here lately. I also get very bored and tired with them. I want something new and original. And while yes, these offer a brand new story for us. I just get so tired of this trend. I want something whol new and a completely new set of characters to fall for and love on.
But as depressing as the start of this review may be. I also really really loved this book. And have only good things to say about it.
I was pretty content with how the original series ended. And didn't think I really needed any other sort of closure. And I still stand by that mentality. But I'm also glad we got this. I like getting more of Zane. He was such an enigma back in the days of The Dark Elements series. Even after we had some of that brief romance with Layla and all. And really saw him change his views and grow as a character. So getting more of that and seeing how the ending fof that series really played out in his late was interesting.
Plus I really enjoyed the addition of Trinity to the story. She was such a fun character to get to see grow and learn even in the brief pages of this one book. And I really liked how she was the main focus and we just got those rich and extend details that explained and dove into Zane. It made for such a. Well rounded way of story telling that didn't make it feel like we were just going around again on the same train as we did with Layla. And I appreciate that so much in a story.
Although I will say. And I'm sure I've mentioned it before. Don't give me past character cameos just for the sake of the cameo. Because my really only complaint with this book was that I felt every time we see aroth and Layla it was forced. Them being in the story did not seem organic. And I would have almost rather not seen them then did at that point. We all love our nostalgia of seeing g past characters we adore. But they just didn't seem like they fit this story well at all. I would have much rather them show up later in the series where it didn't seem quite so forced.
But that point is neither here nor there. It is what it is. And I'm sure most people enjoyed getting to our favorite demons again. So don't mind me haha.
But the last point I really want to hit on before I wrap this up is that..... I CALLED IT!!! Intorally knew who the baddie (or well one of them) was gonna be. And I was ready to reach into the book to smack some sense into Trinity. It seemed so obvious and just broke my heart for her once the truth finally came out. And I loved the emotions Jen got from me while I read it all happening. You can relate so well with Trinity and Zane both. And the background and world Jen created to keep this story going was stellar. I fully well expect to see demons waking down my street at any point now. (Although I think I said something similar back during the Dark Elements time too haha)
So incase you just weren't sure. I give STORM AND FURY

Trinity has led a sheltered life within the Warden gargoyle community with most everyone thinking she is just a human. But in actuality, she is the last of her kind, a weapon to be used- or an abomination to some. When a few wardens are allowed into the community, Trinity finds herself drawn to the attractive and infuriating Zayne. But soon, something dear to her is taken and nothing will stop her from getting it back, even if it costs her life.
Sooo, I did not realize that this was a spin-off series. I knew it was set in the same world of gargoyles that The Dark Elements series is set in, but I did not realize that one of the main characters was a min character from that series and that the actions there play a HUGE role in his drama in this series. Well, yeah. So anyway, I guess this can be read as a new series (since I successfully did) but I wish I had read the other series first for all the drama and backstory.
Ok, now that is over, OMG this was so GOOD! I love this heartbreaking story, I wish I hadn't read it so that I could go back and read it all over again for the first time. We all know my love with all things written by JLA and this is no exception. She is able to create the best characters, engaging twisty plots, descriptive world building, incredible sexual tension, heartbreak that makes me want to rampage, and leaves me wanting more every time. The thing that gets me the most with this story was Trinity's voice, so real and sarcastic and relatable, her thoughts and conversations could have been pulled directly out of my tangent filled sarcastic brain! I also really loved how honest Trinity was with herself and her flaws, where as she is the most powerful creature she knows yet she is humble and human. As a side note, Trinity suffers from an eye condition that the author also deals with that added realism and vulnerability I was not expecting (as well as education the reader).
I can ramble forever about this book and my love for it but I will wrap this up and say that this is the first in a series, with some bread crumbs dropped and turmoil just getting started so expect no happy resolution here (I will hope for a happy resolution to come...). I also recommend picking up The Dark Elements series first to read, which I will go gobble up to fill in the gaps in what appears to be some seriously angsty drama. Overall you will not be disappointed whatever choice you make as long as you read this book (spoken by a true fan-girl)!
For some reason, I didn't read this back when it came out. Not sure why, as I love Jennifer. But, I finally read it now! I think I might have been a little worried about whether or not I'd like Zayne, but in the end, everything was fine! I really enjoyed this book and loved Trinity's character! She's a badass and she knows it! I read basically the whole book today between classes and this evening! I'm excited for this expansion of the White Hot Kiss world, and can't wait to read book two!
You know those authors you simply one-click because you just KNOW their words are going to change you? You know you will love what is written on those pages?
I wasn't wrong. Jennifer Armentrout always manages to up the bar with every book she writes. This particular series and these particular characters hold a super special place in my heart, and I had been DYING to get back to this world.
I want to live it in forever. And ever. And ever.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves urban or high fantasy. It’s set in DC and the surrounding areas, but definitely has the feel of a high fantasy novel. This book didn’t take me long at all to tear through! It’s a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Book for me!
This spin off that I didn't even realize it was a spin off was one of the best that I have read. I need book two right now!! This was one wild story that I really want to read again! It also makes me want to go back and reread the White Hot Kiss series. It was one of my all time favs. And this really made me miss those characters. The twists and turns in this one are abound on each page and I could not put it down!! I will not be saying anything else other than the writing was amazing as always and the characters were fantastic!! No spoilers here!!
Fun. It's always fun. But I just didn't feel that burst of need for this story. Zayne isn't my favourite. So that doesn't help.
I mean it was a good readable story.
This book was awesome! Could not put down! I would recommend reading The Dark Elements series first before this one as it would make a bit more sense! This has been a fun, action-filled and heartbreaking, yet heartwarming read!
So no one told me Storm and Fury was a spin-off series until near release day. 😬
The last time I read JLA was her Lux series, in which I have an intense love/hate relationship that bordered more on “I disliked it enough that I didn’t finish.” But I did decide to dive into Storm and Fury despite characters appearing from The Dark Elements series. I recommend reading The Dark Elements series first though unless you don’t mind spoilers.
But if you do care about being spoiled, I’d backtrack from picking Storm and Fury up.
JLA’s writing has truly grown — this is chock full of snark and humor.
Not reading an author’s works for years makes things eye-opening. Reading Storm and Fury definitely showed so much growth in JLA’s writing, but it’s possible that:
~ My reading preferences changed over time.
~ Lux series was just not the story for me.
That being said, one of my favorite things out of Storm and Fury is the writing. The first book in The Harbringer series is full of snark and humor from nearly all of the characters. I love the way Trinity tries to make her situations comical and particularly her interactions with Zayne. And I enjoyed seeing Roth make an appearance (I now want to read The Dark Elements just for his sass).
Is there anything actually going on in Storm and Fury?
When I sat myself down to write the review and really thought about this, there isn’t. There is nothing much happening in this book and what drove the story the most for me is the snark and humor. Everything seems to happen near the end of the story, but it seems like there is a constant state of action.
What we spend time doing instead:
~ learning about the Warden life
~ learning about Trinity with a lot of mystery surrounding her
~ chasing down what could be killing both demons and Wardens
~ romantic angst (chemistry?) between Trinity and Zayne
But we do get some kick-ass scenes throughout where Trinity is an absolute boss and she adapts to retinitis pigmentosa rather than let it hinder her. (Side note: JLA has this and I loved seeing how she integrated the eye disease in Storm and Fury!)
Lately, the first book in a series for me has been seemingly slow, focusing on the setup rather than the action, so I’m not letting this bother me with JLA’s latest. I enjoyed reading Storm and Fury and recommend it to those who enjoy a paranormal romance that will make you laugh.
I love the unique plot of "Storm and Fury" and found the characters likeable and well-developed. With Halloween around the corner, this is a great spooky read to get in the mood. It's also a quick and enjoyable read. I'm definitely looking forward to the sequel!
I didn't realize this was a spin off from another series, but regardless, I really enjoyed this book. The premise, where Trinity can communicate with ghosts and spirits, and is therefore protected by GARGOYLES was fascinating and ended up being so well executed. I appreciated that she dealt with her impending blindness without being too defeatist - she was accepting of it and kept on being a badass! Her friend ghost, Peanut, is also among my favorite sidekicks I've read in a while. Fabulous comic relief in all the right spots, while also being kind of adorable.
I wasn't sure about Zayne, but he grew on me. I really liked the dynamic between him and Trinity, and ended up rooting for them in the end.
I hadn't read the original series, but this book held up as a standalone. Fans of YA fantasy will find it enjoyable and a fairly quick read.
I love everything Jennifer writes and I thoroughly enjoyed this new gargoylian style fantasy but I think I'm too hooked on some of her earlier series and the Luxen completely steal the show from me.
This is a solid new fantasy series and I've recommended it to a lot of members of my club
I never read any books by Jennifer Armentrout but after reading Storm and Fury, I feel like I need to read more of her writing. Why? Because this book, in particular, was super fun to read. The idea of gargoyles and angels and demons and witches all in one place makes me euphoric. While the characters were rather plain (Trinity, while I liked her, annoyed me in most parts of the book because of her naivety; so did Zayne), I still enjoyed the mystery and action that accompanied them throughout the story. What I loved most about this book is that the heroine has a flaw: losing her eyesight. I loved this detail so much because most female characters are portrayed as strong, confident, and immaculate. Trinity does not fall in this category, and that makes her even better. I will definitely recommend this book to any student/friend. Thank you NetGalley and Harlequin Teen for this eARC. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I really enjoyed all the elements of this book. The characters were well developed and the setting was very vivid. I loved the author’s writing style. She did a wonderful job immersing me into the world of the book.
I love Trinity. She’s no damsel in distress. She is loyal to those she loves and she knows how to defend herself and anyone who needs her. She can see ghost and spirits and she talks to them. I loved Peanut. He’s too funny and being that Peanut can get around I don’t know how certain things get by him. Guess he’s busy watching what he shouldn’t.
Zayne from the very beginning is very appealing. There’s a pull and chemistry between him and Trinity. Trinity has a secret that only those who are really close to her know.
I like how Trinity isn’t afraid to tell Zayne things no one else would and she challenges him.
I highly recommend this book.
Ugh. Maybe I need to take a break from listening to books. Or maybe I need to only listen to books with full casts and not just 1 person reading. But this lost a star because I found it irritating to have the characters sound so shallow. There was not enough depth to them. Maybe that was due to the reading? It may have been better if I’d read this myself, in my head. The story was frustrating. I felt like it was a “high school” story for the first half and a “college” story for the second. There was not much transition. Trinity goes from worrying about boys at home to living with one right away. And she was so irritating. I did not like Trinity. I like to like the main characters. But I can appreciate the world that was built in this book.
One more major issue: there was an incredibly steamy “almost sex” scene that felt very out of place for a YA.
I probably won’t read the next one.
Gargoyles, angels, and demons - it sounds like something from a Saturday morning cartoon back in the 90s. Except it is Jennifer L. Armentrout's latest novel, set in current times with all the amenities the Internet has to offer. Not having read any of her previous novels, I had no idea what to expect when diving into Storm and Fury. I did not realize it was the continuation of a previous series until I was midway through the story. While this knowledge may have added a little extra something to my reading experience, I don't feel I lost anything by not having any previous exposure to Trinity's world. I tore through this story of demons and gargoyles, swooning at all the right moments and hoping the story would never end. I enjoyed Ms. Armentrout's breezy writing style as well as the story. I adored Trinity and her vulnerabilities as well as her refusal to remain a damsel in distress. Strong women with even an even stronger code of ethics get me every time, and Trinity is a welcome addition to that list of heroines I admire and thoroughly support. I look forward to seeing what else Ms. Armentrout has in store for Trinity and Zayne.
