A lovely slow burn romance, wonderful sweet characters and a happy end. The story is lovely, a sweet read, my only criticism would be felt a bit short, like the end was missing something a bit more, but that’s the biggest criticism I can give, that I would have like more!
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion
This was so cute, I love stories set in small little villages and this one didn't just have a cafe but a bookstore too! The best. The characters were all very well developed and the setting well described. It was such a happy, cosy read and I thoroughly enjoyed it!
It really does take a village, doesn't it? This lovely second chance romance for Callie and Noah is also very much about the cafe, set in a bookstore run by Flora, and her family. Flora, the new owner of the bookstore where Callie works, takes her up on her suggestion that they create a cafe and that's where things take off. Callie's grandfather Stanley- what a guy! He's more or less doing a bucket list of experiences which make some question his stability. There's other lovely people who populate the village (I liked Becca in particular.). At times I reminded myself that Callie is meant to be 26. Noah broke her heart when they were teens but now he's back. Along with his brother. Hmmmm. Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. This is a fun read and I can easily envision more books set in Honeyford!
Completely brilliant book. A book which manages to envelope you in a big hug of comfort and love.
It is full of warmth and coziness and gives you that nice happy glow inside.
If you’re seeking a heart-warming feel good read then you’ll thoroughly enjoy New Starts and Cherry Tarts at the Cosy Kettle by Liz Eeles-Smith is perfect.
Callie Fulbright has given up on love and is now sinking all her energy into her new business venture. However when her gorgeous ex-boyfriend arrived back in Honeyford, it seems Callie’s new found confidence is out to the test. It’s a great story with some fantastic characters who will stay with you long after you’ve turned the final page.
A great read that I can highly recommend. Thank you to NetGalley, Bookouture and the author for the chance to review.
I enjoyed reading this book. It was interesting and fun to watch Callie open up and gain confidence in herself and inspire the people around her. #NewStartsAndCherryTartsAtTheCosyKettle #NetGalley
I received an early preview copy of this book from in return for an honest review.
This is my first book by this author but I had heard good things about her novels, I was attracted by the cover of this book and also liked the fact that it was a new standalone book.
Callie works at a quiet bookshop, at the age of 26, she has given up on love. When the bookshop has a new owner, Callie is told that she spends most of her time talking to customers and offering tea and support rather than selling books. She is given the opportunity to open a cafe in the bookshop. The cafe gets off to a good start, but then Callies new start is threatened by her ex, Noah who makes a reappearance, and then worse than that, it becomes apparent that someone is threatening the existence of the cafe.
This is a delightfully heartwarming and cosy read. There is a wide range of wonderful characters, each with their own story. It is well written, and the story flows smoothly. The story features comedy, romance, books and cakes, what could be better! I absolutely loved this book.
This is a cosy haven of a read for all book lovers, it’s full of warmth and relatable characters that you would love to meet and probably have! The authors descriptions enabled me to visualise the bookshop and the cafe, which enhanced my ability to be transported into this easy read with a tinge of sadness but eventually a lot of happiness.

In this story we follow Callie. She works in the local bookshop, she wants to please her new boss Flora, when she suggests changing an old stock room into a cafe. Flora puts Callie in charge of turning the old stock room into a café and running The Cosy Kettle as well.
The café is Callie’s pride and I loved seeing her in this lovely environment. She has some wonderful costumers and they all become friends and are there for each other. That was a fab thing to see and read about.
Her personal life is full of drama and ups and downs though. First of all we have her grandfather, who plays a very important role in this story and adds another touch to it. And then we have Noah. He kind of broke her heart years ago and moved away. Well, he is back now and the butterflies are still there.
The drama increases when the café’s reputation is in danger. Does Noah know something about that?! And what happens when he goes back to New York?!
This book is full of so many great factors. The main character is very relatable and real, there is a love/romance aspect, but also enough drama to create an entertaining storyline and the other characters also play a significant part in the story.
It’s a warm, cosy and sweet story!
I could start this review with repeating myself and saying that I just can’t resist a book centered around a food cafe. But I would just be repeating myself over and over again. So let’s skip that part and concentrate on the fact that this is going to be a very positive review, once we get one little annoying thing out of the way.
What is this synopsis all about? I can be completely wrong but isn’t a synopsis not meant to tell the future reader what the book is going to be about? Or at least highlight the strong features of the story so people will be drawn to it? None of that with New Starts and Cherry Tarts at the Cosy Kettle. After finishing this lovely story I reread the synopsis again and basically apart from the names of the characters and the fact that there is indeed a cafe I could have read the synopsis of a wholly different book.
When I started reading I was quite confused. I found our main character Callie hurrying to her job in a bookstore after she tried to convince her grandfather not to go skydiving or swimming in the local river naked. See I told you two very important things about this book that will probably make your heart beat a little bit faster. And it only took me 2 sentences.
Yes, this book is set in a bookstore. I know… fast beating heart, because well we are all book-lovers here. So a book that is set in our natural environment will just make is happy without even reading it. And our main heroine Callie is indeed starting a cafe, hence the name The Cosy Kettle, but the café is set in the bookstore. I know, now you are just having heart palpitations. I loved reading about the new owner of the bookstore and Callie trying to find her place after Flora took over the bookstore.. Flora is a wonderful woman, who is always willing to listen to Callies idea about the store and the café. She really respects and supports Callie and together they make a remarkable team.
So what about that skydiving, skinny dipping grandfather I hear you think. Yes, I really got you interested there. Callie is living with her grandfather who is one of my favorite characters so far this year. I absolutely loved his part in the story. Callie’s gramp has had a rough time himself and after reading a new age article he is trying to become his true self. An 80 year old men who wants to go skinny dipping, scuba diving and running… it is quite something different. But I absolutely adored the dynamic between Callie and her grandfather.
The story is filled with lovely side-characters who all have their own little story line. There is Becca, a young woman who struggles with her social anxiety, but is so lovely and charming that I loved her from the first appearance in the story. Mary, a new mother who is trying to find her place again after becoming a mother. And so on… so many lovely people fill the Cosy Kettle and make it feel like home, even to you as a reader.
And of course there is some romance in this book. But and this is a very important but this story isn’t very heavy on the romance. 80% of the story is about Callie figuring out who she really is and what she wants to do with her life. Of course her old flame Noah brings some romantic moments into the story, but there aren’t a lot of them and for me that was quite a good thing. I just couldn’t really feel any chemistry between Noah and Callie. They had a very short relationship in the past, when they were teenagers, but even that wasn’t enough to make me buy into their love story. Now it felt a little instalovey and I think it would take more than a few conversations and kisses to close a gap of 8 years.
But apart from the romance that wasn’t quite believable I absolutely loved the story. I wish I could go and have a cup of tea in the quint little Cosy Kettle right now. I can hardly wait to visit the town of Honeyford again and learn more about Flora.

A very enjoyable cosy read. All of the characters were entertaining but Stanley takes the cake. Looking forward to the rest in this series.
The one thing that bothered me was in the synopsis and title tarts are mentioned, but not once in the book are tarts mentioned. There’s mentions of sweets, buns, pastries, rolls, cakes, but no tarts. So the cherry tarts but in the title seems out of place, I get that it rhymes but it just doesn’t fit. This should have just been called New Starts at the Cosy Kettle Cafe.
Thanks to netgalley I managed to read this book a month before the publication date. I throughly enjoyed this book and wish I could love to Honeyford!
Main Review:
Having to give up her life to look after her grandad or Gramps as she calls him. Working in the local bookshop, her life changes when a new owner takes over and incomes Flora. Flora helps Callie by giving her the money to set up the new cafe, then the Shalwey brothers come back to Honeyford and
Personal Thoughts:
Did anyone else think they wanted to move to Honeyford and work in the bookshop and open up a little cafe in the back. To me, that sounds like my dream job/lifestyle.
A lovely, cheerful feel-good book. One of those books that you know you'll finish reading and end up feeling happy and warm.
Thank you Netgalley and the publishers for the review copy of this book
“Here I am, young, free and single, but currently babysitting an eighty-year-old eco warrior in a tiny Cotswold town”.
Callie works in a bookshop and lives with her eighty-year-old grandfather in the town where she grew up, loving her job but letting life kind of pass her by.
Callie was a pretty relatable character - she's warm and has a good heart and feels strongly about things, but doesn't always share her feelings with others. It was nice to see her really grow in confidence and begin to share her opinions.
The entire cast of secondary characters was lovely. Callie's grandfather was a gem and I could honestly imagine my mum doing similar things (protesting, deciding to take up extreme sports) in her old age. Becca, Phyllis, Millicent, Mary and Flora were all just nice additions to the story.
Honestly in the beginning, having forgotten the plot from the blurb, I kind of expected Callie to fall for Finn, but as soon as he actually appeared and spoke for the first time it was very evident he would not be a love interest. I didn't mind Noah as a love interest, but he seemed a bit wishy washy and they proclaimed their love after meeting five or six times after an eight year gap. Didn't really buy it. Cute, but a bit fast.
The bookshop/cafe storyline just bothered me a little - I hate that trolls exist - but I did like the ending of the storyline. I would have definitely been on board for Callie working in a B&B in direct competition with Finn's under-construction boutique hotel (featuring architect and brother Noah) though.
Overall a nice read, probably wouldn't read again but will definitely read Flora's upcoming book.
amazing light hearted romance read! The pace of this book is not too slow or too fast and the character seemed real and the conflicts doesnt look fake or made up or rushed!
I absolutely adored this book. A lovely story,a great mix of personalities within the characters and all set in the gorgeous Cotswolds. I think i fell most in love with this book because my dream has always been to run a coffee shop that sells books. And we meet Callie that in a round about way manages to do just that. A heartwarming book. Thoroughly enjoyable. Many thanks netgalley for the opportunity to read it, and a bigger thanks to the author for writing this fab book.
Brilliant plot, excellent main characters that you invest in. I read this book in one sitting and I would highly recommend it.
Thanks you everyone for letting me preview this really enjoyable and feel good book. It was just what the doctor ordered during the cold winter nights.
I was sucked in by the beautiful cover on this book! So colourful and some luscious looking cakes...
The synopsis states that 26 year old Callie opens a new cafe "The Cosy Kettle" but what it didn't say is that the cafe is based in a bookstore. That is 2 of my favourite things right there! It was lovely reading about the bookshop which was under new ownership (Flora) with Flora listening to Callie's excellent ideas and giving her newfound confidence in opening the cafe with Flora's backing. I so enjoyed learning more about some of the customers, who end up as friends, and could see how welcoming the bookshop and The Cosy Kettle would be.
Flora lives with her awesome 80 year old Gramp who seemingly has a new sense of life and is determined to live it to the full as well as say what he means which leads to many comical moments, I'm sure I snorted on one occasion! He was an excellent addition to the story, with a solemn aspect too in terms of his beloved wife (deceased) that added real heart.
Noah is an ex-boyfriend of Callie's with who she had a fleeting relationship years ago that ended in 2 broken hearts - he is back in town working on a new project and I was relishing finding out if the 2 of them could forget the past and forge forward together.
Overall this was a thoroughly enjoyable read that had me laughing, smiling and touched me at times too. The author's note at the end states there will be another visit to Honeyford and I can't wait to dive in to that already!
My many thanks to Bookouture via NetGalley for providing me with this advanced reading copy in exchange for an honest review.
The blurb was better than the book. It was really slow moving and things took so long to develop in the storyline, I started to skim some of the paragraphs. The premise of this book is good but just wished it moved along faster and had a little less quirk to the grandpa. The whole new mom who let a stranger walk around with her infant while she fell asleep in the book store, so unbelievable and at that point, I started getting board and skimming.
