Thank you so much to the publishers and Netgalley for giving me access to this book. Unfortunately my tastes have changed and I am no longer interested in this book but once again thank you so much for the opportunity!

This started out well and I was interested from page one, interesting, fast paced and then somewhere about halfway though the book lost me. I wasn’t interested anymore and couldn’t keep focused on it. I think I didn’t feel much for the lead character so found it found to be interested, a good premise but unfortunately I wasn’t kept interested enough.

It took me so long to getting around to read this book. Every time I tried I got one chapter in and felt so bored. It wasn’t until I forced myself to got to chapter three that things picked up. Not a lot but it picked up.
Mackenzie’s sister was killed in unusual circumstances. On the anniversary of her death Mackenzie goes back to the scene of her death to try to get some closure. What she gets is attacked by a vampire.
Mackenzie is then thrust into a whole new underworld of Vampires, hunters and houses with doors that open up on different continents. After accidentally breaking a vial of seemingly innocent material she becomes something more than she ever thought possible.
To be honest I felt this book was a mess. Take Buffy and mix in Warehouse 13, a bit of Doctor Strange and some Laurel K Hamilton and you have this book. Coincidence seemed to be routine and our shattered heroine is immediately invited into the heart of a solid group and given the keys to the kingdom, as it were. I got bored towards the end and skim read the rest. Her sudden power gain and unique abilities made for more of a cliché story than I was comfortable with and the other characters were bland and often exhibited behaviour that seemed at odds with previously stated personality traits.

I really found this book just okay. The main character was dull. But the scenery and world building, oh how amazing it was. Definitely will be checking out the next book because I would like to know what happens next.

MacKenzie left her mother's house and wondered if this would be the night she gave in and finally listen to Dr. Boyle when she left the house going through with her therapist-Dr. Boyle- advice on leaving her mother alone. But taking steps to help her face what happened to her sister-Evelyn/Evie- seemed like a terrible way to mark the first anniversary of the day she died. One direction would take her to the part of town where her body had been found. The other would lead her to the end of the line and than home. All Dr. Boyle had really asked MacKenzie was to head back to the neighborhood Evie had been murdered. How could anyone move on from anything like what happened to Evie? The way her body was found behind a low grade nightclub- Release- with her neck mutilated by possibly a hot poker. The only thing the police could offer. After her sister was found her father quickly left her mother and slipped away from them.Since evie’s death MacKenzie dropped out of school, let her closest friends drift away or forcibly pushed them out of her life. She even stopped trying to stay in touch with her father. When Dr. Boyle suggested she get part time job she went to her uncle Ian to work in his pet shop-Pet Hut. When the doctor wanted her to go back to school she enrolled online. Than MacKenzie wen tinto Release where her sister had died. The cops were pretty sure her body had been moved. Outside to the trash heap. She seen a guy at the club with a girl that her mind screamed recognition and unnamed panic than she remembered the guy before in one of Evie’s pictures . It was from a night out with Evie’s H S friends over Thanksgiving break. She pulled up the picture than found at least six more pictures he was featured in. She was trying to figure out who he could have been to Evie. The cops had abandoned evie’s death a couple months after her death. MacKenzie felt like she could feel him all around hre, an undeniable presence pressing in on her. MacKenzie went to go back to the door and a force shoved her from behind. She toppled toward the dumpster . Than she felt something wrap around her neck , taking hold with enough force to keep her nearly upright. Fingers dug in around her throat, than the same force lifted her off her feet. Than a hot fire pierced her skin near the back of her neck of her throat. Energy drained from her body slow but unstoppable. She would die the same way her sister had. Than she heard some shouting. The searing pain stopped as quickly as it had started and she crumpled to the ground. Than the bartender-Leah- put her hand out to help MacKenzie up. After she was back in the nightclub MacKenzie was getting confused and agreed to having a cab called. Than she reached the back of her neck in the cab and there was blood and than a deafening headache started. Her neck was still seeping blood the next day. When she got up everything in her body was sore and she felt exhausted to the core. Than she seen the guy from her sisters’ pictures she had ,Than he said you’re injured and said it should be looked. His name was His name was author. Than he asked if she minded if he helped clean her neck up. Than he said he had a med kit at his home around the corner, in and out when she said she’d go to the hospital he said a doctor won’t be able to help you. Arthur swore to her and he had everything he needs and it’s an easy fix. Just not here. Than he said text a friend where you are going, put put his picture on her phone along with the address where she was going . He said he didn’t want to scare her but this was important. macKenzie learned about vampires.
This was an okay read for me that I doubt I will read again. I did like the plot and fast pace. But it just didn’t end as interesting as it began. Somewhere in the middle it was just hard for me stay interested in this read. I had a lot of questions that were never answered. It dragged for me at times. So I think you can tell I had mixed feelings about this book.

I received this from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a fun read. I have always loved Vampire stories and so when I read this was a vampire book, well of course I had to give it a shot. I am glad I was approved for this. The world in this was great. The author did a great job writing out the characters. They are very distinguished. There were moments that I thought could have been better and I found myself bored or wanting more but then when the plot did hit I didn't want to put the book down.
I do recommend this book.

This was simultaneously one of the best books I've read this year, and one of the most frustrating, as I want to know more, and I want to know NOW!
Sincerely, fantastic world-building, character & plot development and enough backstory to make it all the more intriguing! I'm hooked, and our customers will be too!

Thank you so much to Netgalley and Patchwork Press for letting me have the chance to read and review this book before its debut! I read vampire in the description and was immediately interested. I love Kellie’s lore; not just her vampires but the addition of beings like Sentinels and the theory that all women have a vein of witchcraft in them. I was so drawn to Mack, who was learning how to live her life again after losing her sister. I think that the book as a whole could be seen as an amazing metaphor for grieving. She starts out wandering, unsure of her place in the world. She finds herself in a world she never could have imagined, and (even if through supernatural means) comes out of the other side of the tunnel a strong and capable force of nature. I loved all the little twists and turns and these lovable, incredible, and powerful characters. I can’t wait for the series to continue and see what Fred’s role is, more of Theo’s background, and Mack’s mother’s own journey through the loss of her child. As a fellow Buffy stan, I think this book was made for me!

Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for a free copy for an honest opinion

After her sisters murder, Mack hadn't been feeling like herself. She needed closure. So she went to look for it to find out what exactly had happened to her sister and who had killed her. Finding out about vampires definitely wasn't something she expected.
I really enjoyed reading this novel, yet I didn't get the answers I wanted. Really need to get my hands on book two for that, it seems! The world that the author built, especially the magical house, was rather gripping and interesting. Wish I could say the same about the characters, though. I was left with so many questions and you didn't really get to know any of them that well, except for Mackenzie, that is.
All in all, it was a nice quick enough read which did grip you, but unfortunately didn't really keep you on your toes.
