I did not finish this one, it was not for me, I couldn't relate to the characters, and just did not care for the story.
Thank you Netgalley for this ARC of The Girl Across the Street by Vikki Patis.
On the surface Isla has it all. A handsome husband, a nice home, people who visit her often to do her nails, her tan, etc. But Isla's life is anything but perfect, she feels trapped in her own life, and her captor is her husband.
Beth does not have it all, she has a rickety apartment, a deadbeat boyfriend, and a small income. But Beth has taken a vested interest in Isla and being her friend. But why would Beth, who has so little in common with Isla be so interested in her, and are her interests good for Isla?
I actually liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I can't say that it's really going to stick out when it comes to other domestic dramas/thrillers similar to this, but I was thoroughly invested every step of the way. It's written and paced well with just the right amount of tension. Great for a rainy October day.
This was a brilliant read. As soon as I started reading this book I just knew I was going to love it. Highly recommended
The Girl Across The Street is a fast pace thriller. Isla takes walks at night when she can’t sleep. She happens upon a man laying in the street after being hot by a car that left the scene. She meets Beth there trying to save the mans life. Isla’s and Beth become friends Isla’s husband Jake doesn’t like Beth. Beth has a secret #netgalley #goodreads
Nothing is as it seems in this book. Just as soon as you think you have it figured out, then you are hit with a twist. Recommended.
So I started reading this and just thought...standard domestic suspense.
But, as I started reading this, I began to read the one particular character had motivations I really couldn't figure out. And I was intrigued! Now, I'll admit that when we find out this character's motivations, they were a little out of left field, but they were still different and interesting.
In fact, the book definitely held my interest. I liked both our women, even when I didn't truly trust one of them. And I definitely wanted to know how it would all end.
A good beach read!
When Isla an insomniac is having a late night walk, she witnesses a jogger killed by a hit and run driver. She tries to save his life along with Beth who lives locally.
Isla and Beth become friends. Isla has not had a close friend in years, what harm can it do? From the outside they have nothing in common, Isla lives in a nice house and has no money worries whereas Beth lives in a council flat struggling to make ends meet.
The chapters alternate between Beth and Isla. Seems like both of them have secrets. All the time there is a darkness hiding amongst this story. I was totally addicted desperate to find out what the connection was between the characters and how it would all end.
Beth has a plan to get close to Isla. But she wasn’t expecting to actually feel sorry for her and start to see her as a real friend, will she be able to carry on with her plan?
Loved this book and did not want to finish it. You never really know what goes on behind closed doors!! I really wanted Beth to be a true friend to Isla who I felt very sorry for!!
Amazing book! Took me in right at the start and didn't let me go until the very end. Well written, great characters and an ending that will leave you wanting more!
This was a great thriller and very well written.
It took me a while to get into the book, but after the first third of the book I was gripped.
The book is very well written, to the point you can empathise with the characters. Great storyline too.
Fantastic character development that pulled me in from the start and kept me gripped. It's more psychological than thriller but well paced.
WOW! The Girl Across the Street is a story about two women who shared a devastating experience never once believing they would become friends.
This story has great character development and grabbed me from the first page. There are so many issues the author has her characters go through and it almost feels like you are right there going thru it all too. Very emotional and just all around a fantastic read.
I can't wait to get my hands on the Diary by Vikki Patis. My new favorite author!
I love suspenseful thrillers and this one did not disappoint! Isla and Beth are likable characters and unlikely friends. Brought together by a hit and run accident, these two have many secrets that will influence their every move.
I would firstly like to thank Netgalley and the publishers for allowing me the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
This was a first read for me from this author, and while this read was enjoyable, this was another one that lacked a shocking element that made it a thrilling page-turner. I was a tad intrigued and the characters were brilliantly written but I had expected more twists and turns.
However I am still looking forward to reading more from this author.
A good thriller with well developed characters that kept me turning the pages! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the advanced review copy.
This isn't my typical subgenera of books that I read. It was really good and held my interest until the very end. I didn't want to put it down and recommended it to people already. I would read more by this author.
The friendship starts over the body of a man who has just become a victim of hit and run. The two women are poles apart. Beth saw the accident and knows who the driver is ... but she doesn't tell anyone. Ilsa swears she didn't see it happen.
Ilsa is married to Jake, an abusive man. Secretly. Ilsa takes birth control pills ...she cannot fathom bringing a child into her sham of a marriage. What people see on the outside are a woman who seems to have it all ... a loving husband, an enviable lifestyle, expensive clothes, regular trips to the spa.
Beth is married to her high school sweetheart, Jake. She works as a waitress. Jake watches TV a lot and spends time devouring his weed.
When Beth decides to leave Jake, she turns to her new found friend, Ilsa, who takes her in immediately. Beth could never have guessed what went on behind closed doors, the secrets Ilsa keeps.
Both their lives are about to take a tragic turn.
I did not find this one particularly gripping or compelling. It was more like watching a train wreck from your living room window... you didn't want to watch, but it was hard to look away. The relationship between Beth and Ilsa is filled with secrets and lies. The characters, while finely drawn, are not at all likeable. There seem to be no redeeming qualities within any of them. I was expecting an explosive ending ... I was disappointed there, too. The story just kind of fizzled out and left me with a lot of questions ...and no answers.
Many thanks to the author / Bookouture / Netgalley for the digital copy of THE GIRL ACROSS THE STREET. Read and reviewed voluntarily, the opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.
You’re hiding a secret that only she can see.
Right from the first page we are on an adrenaline filled ride with this one. It opens with a hit and run resulting in a male jogger lying in the street. Both Isla and Beth happened to be in the area and witness it. They rush to perform CPR but they are unable to save him, and bonding over the traumatic experience they soon became good friends.
The book is full of secrets, deceptions and lies I mean why were these two random people outside on the same street at 3am? As the author unravels their secrets we realise they have more in common than you realise.
I stayed up all night reading this one and LOVED it, just when I thought we had unraveled all the secrets, another shocking twist comes along. and it leaves you reeling. I can't wait to recommend it to my book club so we can discuss!
I received this via netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I loved it guys. This book was just what I wanted It to be. The world building was fun and enticing. The characters were very well flushed out. We probably all have friends like these!! I loved the plot of this. I can not wait to read more by this author. I highly recommend this book.
I really enjoyed this book. The characters were appealing and well written and I felt immersed in the story throughout the book.
This is possibly one of my favorite books of 2019. I enjoyed peeling back the layers of this dark thriller. As an avid reader of thrillers and mysteries, I usually think I've got the plot twists and secrets down, but pleasantly enough the author didn't go with what I suspected. Fair warning, it does deal with domestic abuse, and at certain points I was flat out rooting for a Strangers on the Train Situation.
I was recommending to my friends before I even finished.
