Great romantic read with low drama. Fast paced novel with a great build world. Perfect read for an afternoon. Arc provided by Netgalley
This was a good, fast read. It was quite predictable and a little formulaic but it was also exactly what I was in the mood for.
I'm always a sucker for a sports book. Scott was perfect - a little bit of a jerk at first that later figured out what was important in life.
I'm also a sucker for a cute kid in a book and Tyler was just that. I liked his mom too. She was fiercely independent and I also love that.
If you're looking for a quick single parent with a sport hero read then this is your book.
I received an advanced copy of this book through NetGalley. This is my honest review.
It is a twist of fate that single mom Felicity Shaw loses her job unexpected and ends up getting a job within minutes. She is not sure that Soccer star Scott Gillie really wants her help as his personal assistant as he recuperates from an injury, but her current predicament makes this job a a must have for the time being. She doesn't plan on falling for Scott though and when the feeling are shared she doesn't know what to do. Throw in Scott's Grandmother who makes it known she wants him to settle down and you have an entertaining read.
This was fun, the story starts and you get pulled in right away. I thought Tyler, Felicity's son was spot on for his age and they way he added to the story was endearing. This is a wonderful read to pick up on a cold day with a blanket and enjoy, especially with soccer season heading to the playoffs soon.
Scott definitely didn’t want Felicity by his side. Just the thought alone of not recovering from a debilitating injury was enough to drive him crazy. Trying to make sense of the single mom that is struggling to make ends meet was something he could just simply live with until it became more. The chemistry at times could have burned a little but hotter but it was a great read.
I just could not get into this book. I had to put it down and come back several times to be able to get through it. The writing wasn't horrible, but it didn't hold my attention. The characters were okay, but I didn't really feel a connection to them. There isn't any "heat" to this book either. Unless the book is so well written that I don't miss it, that's a must for me. They do get their HEA, so that's something. Even though I didn't enjoy this one, I would give this author another try.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.
I enjoyed this lightheaded romance. I enjoyed the banter and the chemistry between Felicity and Scott. The buildup of their relationship was at times fun and at times serious, but I liked they way they both learnt something from it. Tyler was a great kid and I loved the way he helped change Scott's behaviour. Scott's grandmother, Edna, was a great character, full of the quirkiness and cunning elderly people often have. Dreams can change and we need to make sure we don't miss out on life by being afraid of that change.
I found the story of Felicity and Scott to be a sweet love story. Initially I had some issues getting into the story, but I stuck with it and enjoyed it as the relationship began to gel. It is not a hot and steamy story, but found I enjoyed watching the relationship unfold between the couple. Adding in a cranky grandma and a cute kid really fleshed out the story.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my open honest review.
After seeing the rave reviews, I really really wanted to like this but unfortunately it failed to meet my expectations. Kyra Jacobs “The Soccer Player and the Single Mom” lead characters Felicity and Scott were boring and they lacked chemistry. They held nothing in common yet here they are falling madly in love with other and having their happily ever after. I was so bored halfway through that I decided to drop it like it's hot. Sadly this series wasn't for me.

The Soccer Player and the Single Mom by Kyra Jacobs is a sweet and well written romance.
I enjoyed the plot, it's entertaining and well paced and watching Scott and Felicity come together left me with a smile on my face.
The Soccer Player and the Single Mom is a lovely way to spend your Sunday afternoon .
*Thank you to the publisher via Netgalley for the ARC*
This book is “sweet and clean” while there is some light cursing (absolutely no f-bombs) implied sexual content, the scenes fade to black.
This was my first Kyra Jacobs book, and it will not be the last. I loved the writing style in this book, the way Ms. Jacobs balanced out the serious moments with a great amount of heart and a ton of humor. I found myself highlighting a lot of different passages while I was reading; laughing out loud at the way that Ms. Jacobs phrased something or how she described something. I love it when a book can do that.
Felicity and Scott were also just great characters. I adored how much Felicity loved her son (Tyler) and how devoted she was, never letting her personal interest in Scott override her job as mother to her son. Sometimes in books children are a means to an end, showing up only whenever the author needs to make the parent look good, but Felicity is a real mother who actually takes care of her son and I loved that. And Scott, for all of his grousing and grumping at the beginning is a really great guy who just needed a reason to look beyond his narrow worldview and see that life is going on around him while he sits on the sidelines. Tyler is also a fantastic character – kids in books can be either too perfect or too obnoxious, but he's absolutely adorable.
I would highly recommend this story to any reader who enjoys a sports-related story and a book that has a lot of humor and a lot of heart.
Felicity is loses her job and apartment all in one week. She finds new work and a place for her and her son to live with famous soccer player, Scott, who definitely does not want Felicity around. Scott is recovering for a potentially career-ending injury and is adorably grumpy about everything. As time goes by, Felicity and Scott grow closer but they may turn out of time before a relationship can actually start.
I liked this story. Scott's grandmother is funny and Tyler added a lot to the plot. A quick, fun read.
This is a fun and charming sports romance, and it also deals with a couple of issues which rarely get addressed in this category, the most significant one being professional sportsmen dealing with serious injuries and the rehab from such, and players ‘aging out’ and facing the end of their careers. There’s a refreshing trope flip where, for once, it’s the HERO who has to make a significant life change in order to make the relationship work - too often I see heroines giving up their dreams for lurve (ugh). While soccer player Scott Gillies doesn’t have to give up his dream entirely, he does have to make some hard life choices and find new dreams to follow.
Felicity, the single mom, and her Plot Moppet son Tyler, are adorable. Felicity’s sassy, take-no-prisoners attitude and the way she refuses to accept Scott’s entitled nonsense at the start of the book are utterly endearing. Probably the only character I liked more was Scott’s hilariously bonkers grandmother.
On the light side, this has closed-door sex scenes and nothing major in the way of angst. A quick and pleasant read, I’m happy to give it five stars.
I had to give this one a read because it's a sports romance and a single parent romance. Two of my favorites in one book, yes please! Scott won't know what hit him when it comes to Felicity and her son. I just loved all the characters in this book including Scott's grandma and her dog. Scott's grandma adds so much humor to this book. She's had me laughing quite often. I loved the interaction between Scott and Felicity's son. Then I loved watching Felicity give Scott as he dishes out. I think he has met his match. This book has a nice flow that had me gobbling up the book. It's one you shouldn't pass up on!
Such a sweet romance!
There's a string of pretty big coincidences that bring Scott and Felicity into the same circles, but once they are they're darn cute together. Scott's grandmother is a hoot, and Felicity's son Tyler is adorable--together with the hero and heroine they make this a fun story to read. The would-be steamier scenes are fade to black, though there are some toe-curling kisses on the page. Scott grows up nicely during the course of the story, finally realizing that there is more to life than soccer, as his grandmother's been trying to tell him, just in time for a very satisfying HEA.
I'd definitely pick up another book by Ms. Jacobs in the future!
Rating: 4 stars / B+
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
This was a first time read by Kyra Jacobs and I found this read to not be like my other reads. There were just a lot of things that fell flat for me that kept me from truly enjoying Scott and Felicity's story. I didn't hate it, but didn't exactly love it.
The blurb really sucked me pairing two different tropes that I generally love; sports romance and single parent. I love it when kids are incorporated to the story, not all authors can pull it off so well, but I found Tyler to be absolutely adorable and lovable. Honestly, the side characters were the ones that I loved the most aka Scott's grandma and Tyler.
I think it was the storyline and lack of chemistry between Scott and Felicity that had me not enjoying this one so much. I just couldn't feel it all and I really wanted to. Maybe it's just me, but there wasn't any intimate scenes, we know it happens and there's no fade out. Just a clue in that they did it and then it's the next day. I like my romance with all the intimate scenes, however, I know many out there prefer their romances reads this way. So that will definitely appeal to readers who don't like to read about all of that.
As for the plot, I just wanted a bit more. Scott his struggling with being off the field and recovering from his injury. And with Felicity being the persistent personal assistant, that's kind of all it was.
The Soccer Play and the Single Mother is a light-hearted read with little drama that many will enjoy. Unfortunately, it just wasn't the one for me.
Felicity Shaw has pretty much struggled her entire adult life. Since her husband died of an overdose, it has just been her and her six-year-old son Tyler. Felicity lives for her son. With the exception of her cousin Lauren and Lauren’s family, it’s just the two of them. That's not to say Felicity doesn't have parents. She does. They're just not in the picture (their choice) and seem to not care about her or Tyler. While at her son's pediatrician's office, she discovers via a breaking news story that the factory she works at has been closed down. When one door closes, another one opens.
Felicity's open door is being held for her by J.B., the agent for Scott Gillie, pride of Quail Hollow, Indiana, and right-wing for Columbus's major league soccer team. An on-field injury has Scott seeking a second opinion from his friend and former college teammate Evan Bedi. Yes. Evan Bedi of Quail Hollow Pediatrics. Scott hopes that Evan will fast-track his return to soccer before his backup takes his starting position. Unfortunately, Scott's injury is worse than previously thought and Scott is looking at an additional two weeks of recovery time. Since Scott is staying in town with his grandmother, J.B. suggests and hires Felicity to be Scott's PA. Felicity’s job is to do some admin work for J.B. But mostly, she is to schedule appearances around the area for Scott, take him to those appearances, and ferry him around wherever he needs to go.
Scott isn't happy his agent hired Felicity. He doesn't think he needs an assistant and really doesn't want to do any PR work. Needless to say, shenanigans ensue when they each try to push their own agendas. Soon they become attracted to each other and decide to give into their feelings. But all too soon, they each start to wish their temporary fling could be more.
I really enjoyed the push and pull between Felicity and Scott in the beginning. This went on through almost half of the book. Them trying to get back at each other was fun to watch. For me, the tone of the book changed once the laughter stopped. Once they accepted and acknowledged they were attracted to each other, their scars started to show. Since the death of his mother, Scott has used soccer as a crutch. And the promise to his mother, has fueled his tunnel vision desire to be the best and reach the top of his sport. He has cast aside everything in his life for soccer. Felicity is funny. She’s strong, resilient, and resourceful. She carries around the burden of her husband’s death.
I think Kyra did a really, really good job of capturing the soul and essence of a six-year-old little boy. Edna, Scott’s grandmother, was the best kind of grandma. She knows more than she lets on. She's wise. She's funny. She's a handful. I love grand gestures. I found the grand gesture in this story to not be very grand. It was predictable and simple.
Now, I’m stepping on my soapbox to complain about social issues in the book not addressed with ways to seek help. Drug overdose is a huge issue, as is domestic violence. There are no warnings that these are included in the story. There are also no messages on referral links or numbers to seek help, in case you or someone you know needs it. I’m a firm believer that if you put it in the book as a way to drive your story, you owe it to readers, yourself as an author, and publisher to deliver a public service announcement. You never know what little push someone needs to reach out for help.
A sweet romance about a single mom and an injured soccer player.
Felicity doesn't have it easy, but things finally seem on the upswing when she puts a deposit on a rental house. Then her company unexpectedly shuts down and she loses her current apartment before the new rental is ready. Luckily, she is offered a temporary position working as a personal assistant for Scott.
I really enjoyed Felicity and Scott's friendship as it builds over the time she works for him. They start out a bit antagonistic with each other, but that quickly changes to friendship and romance.
Scott's grandma Edna is hilarious. I loved her pink golf cart! Felicity's son Tyler is adorable, too, and I really liked how close he is to his mom. Their relationship is really sweet.
I had fun with THE SOCCER PLAYER AND THE SINGLE MOM. Felicity and Scott really do start out as a “what the heck is this couple doing together” feeling yet the chemistry is there from the start… everyone’s just ignoring it (like that helps at all). It’s also true that early on in this story Scott often comes off as a grown-up cry baby who isn’t getting his own way. I get that he doesn’t want to be out of the game, but an injury needs time to heal – even he has to acknowledge that at some point.
Little Tyler, Felicity’s son and Edna, Scott’s grandmother were the true stars of this romance for me. I adored Scott and Tyler’s relationship – and as my own grandmother would say Edna was such a hoot, I loved her to bits.
This story is an engaging one of opposites attracting, finding something you didn’t know you needed in life and all the pieces falling into the right slots. As I mentioned, I had fun with this one and enjoyed every moment spent in this world.
*I received an e-ARC of this novel from the publisher via NetGalley. That does not change what I think of this story. It is my choice to leave a review giving my personal opinion about this book.*
Loved this sweet romantic read. I fell in love with these characters immediately. First there is single mom Felicity Shaw and her adorable son Tyler. Felicity has had a string of bad luck lately and needs to find a job desperately. Then there is Scott Gillie. Professional soccer player sidelined by an injury and hating it. He just wants to get back in the game not be taken care of by a pushy personal assistant. Scott's agent hires Felicity for that job with a salary that makes it impossible to turn down. Let the games begin!
This is a fun, lighthearted, quick read that I think everyone will enjoy. I definitely recommend it.
Felicity had a six year old son Tyler who had headaches and they were getting worse. Felicity worked at Stinson Automotive had paid better than she expected. She also finally put a deposit down on a rental house by her cousin Lauren. Maybe it would finally start to feel like she was getting her life back together . Life hadn’t been easy since her husband john’s accident and it had became harder after he had passed away from the accidental overdose. After John had died felicity refused to let Tyler see how much she struggled day in, day out to keep a roof over their heads and food on the table. They were at the doctor's office and Tyler pointed out the Columbus soccer team right wing who had just come through the door- Scott gillie. He was there to see Dr. Bedi. Her boss was a patient man but Felicity needed to get to work. Scott was hot but she had already fallen for a bad boy once and look how that turned out. Then there was an announcement on TV Stinson Automotive had shut down with no notice which meant felicity now had no job. Scott felt he should have been on the soccer field In Toronto. Hopefully Scott’s old friend Dr. Evan bedi would clear Scott to play. Scott’s grandmother Edna was no fan of soccer. But it was Scott’s fault as long ago he traded family functions for practices and games. Soccer was Scott’s life, his love. His manager JD was pushing for Scott to get a Personal Assistant- P A but Scott didn’t see the need for one. Scott’s life long goal was making the U S Men’s National team . But some nights when he was alone at his apartment he longed for someone there beside him. But not while Scott was at the top of his game. Women were a distraction for Scott. Evan told Scott he had a hairline fracture in his tibia and said three to four more weeks off. Scott’s trainer had only said two. Than Evan said he would see Scott again in a week for a fresh xray. JD had talked to Felicity and offered her a job as Scott’s P A for triple her pay she had been getting. JD said he needed someone like her, someone who can take charge and keep cool under pressure. JD said Scott was independant and liked handling things in his own. But he worries Scott’s doing too much and it’s delaying his recovery time. If Scott was as big as deal as Tyler made him out to be working alongside him could be a gamble. With celebrities often come drama and that was not an environment she wished for Tyler. Felicity was attracted to scott and he to her. But both were determined to do nothing about it. Than Felicity got a call and the duplex next to her had caught in fire and the whole building was being condemned. She would have to figure out a place to stay for three weeks until the new place would be ready. Edna decided felicity and Tyler could stay with them. Felicity felt she didn’t need a man especially not an arrogant soccer player. On the way to Edna’s tyler asked her why she was mad. But Felicity was more furious at the dark cloud they couldn’t seem to dodge. Felicity hoped Scott would treat Tyler more kindly than he had her this morning. Felicity and Scott eventually had sex.
I really enjoyed this book. It showed how strong a promise made to a dying parent can be. It showed goals changin. I loved Scott and Felicity together and how they interacted. I loved how realistic the author portrayed Scott wanting to get back to playing soccer and his fears of being replaced because of his injury. All and all a good easy romantic read. The romantic feelings happened a little too quick for me but that was ok. I loved the characters and the ins and outs of this book. I wish I could rate this 4.5. I recommend this book.
