This was a very peculiar story, although I got hook by the description and the premise of the story seems interesting, the book was a little bit confusing. It started with the protagonist going in a pre-wedding honeymoon, here her fiancée dish her for another woman. She returns to her home alone, here is we're the confusion started, I have no idea who went to get her from the hotel, how she got home, and how Sebastian became part of the story and her fantasies. She talks of the dark stranger in her dreams, even though she is fantasizing of Sebastian. Of course I know that this dark stranger will become her Egyptian King lover, however it is confusing. I finished the book and I'm still confuse about many things like, how did she get the book, who is the person that keeps talking to her about the prince. I do have to say that the book is well written, although it doesn't have fluidity, lots of great vocabulary.
The Alchemy of Night opens with a demure and mousy protagonist, Philippe, who is betrayed by her smooth-talking fiance on a trip to Egypt, even on the plane there. In Egypt she meets an older woman Shelagh and visits pyramids - the usual things. But she returns with a lot more than she bargains for.
The spirit of an ancient pharaoh wishes possess her, claiming she was his on a previous life. Philippe needs to reclaim her soul. She finds the help in doing this with colleague Sebastian, soon falling deeply for him. Yet it seems her ex is not keen on letting go her go either.
So this girl has to learn to assert herself, in so doing discovering her true strengths and sexuality in the bargain. It does appear that almost everyone she knows, including her employers, have been known to her in a past life in ancient Egypt. Will they together be strong enough to rid Philippa of her old foe?
There are twists and turns to this story, though it did seem a little far-fetched to me that almost everyone she knows in this life is reincarnated from her old life in Egypt, or is an old researcher in into arcane Egyptian secrets
. I imagine that this will thrill readers who like their romance with a little mystery. The writer clearly seems to know her material regarding the mysteries of ancient Egypt, and what could more seductive than romance and nookie combined with a little ancient magic and esotericism?
The ancient magical sexual pra
This is a DNF (Did Not Finish) review:
March 11, 2019 – page 22 - 6.4%: "I'm having a challenging time getting my teeth into this; to no fault of the author. Thoroughly it's concisely written and the characters are listed at the beginning to help battle one element of this massive genre: keeping up with the names...
It has potential, especially if you think of Patricia Velasquez as Ankhesenamun, a Queen of the Eighteenth Dynasty of Egypt.
We'll see...".
March 11, 2019 – page 27 - 7.85%: "When a 'host's daughter' slips into your bed, wakes you from a "deep sleep" having "retired to the bedchamber", this is opportunity not something to glance over in a piece of erotica.
It had started to grow on me although now it feels slightly forced, like I have to change a mindset if you like, for the reading be enjoyed; it's not my usual read but I wanted to give it a chance.
DNF.".
A very informative book. Not really sure what I was expecting with this book. A lot of useful information.
DNF @ chapter 8.. I had to give a ratting but I don’t like rating books I did not finish.
I was really excited about this book and the premise; unfortunately, it did not translate well in the written format. It was often times confusing and more times tedious to read. When I read erotica stories I don’t want to labor through purple prose.
Like I said I was excited to read this story but it was not for me. Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this story.
Also the formatting for this ARC was atrocious, and contributed to unenjoyable read.
Not at all what I was expectimg while reading this book. Couldn't get into it. Just not my kind of book.
Unfortunately I struggled to get into this story. The writing was great and I think Judy Hall has a genuine talent for words which is why I have given 2 stars - however the plot was a little confusing in places and the story just didn't really do much for me personally.
I wound up skim reading a large chunk of the book as I didn't want to DNF it, but it just wasn't for me unfortunately!
Unfortunately this book was just not for me, and I had to DNF it.
The premise sounded interesting, but I don’t feel it translated well in the text, I just couldn’t understand her obsession with this ‘spector’ it was just a very odd consent, and for me it didn’t work.
I would like to thank Netgalley, John hunt Publishing, and Judy for the ARC copy of this book in return for an honest review.
