A great start to what I'm sure will be an awesome collaboration between Rowell and Hicks. I love the color palette, and the narrative is fun and clever.
A great start to a story - looking forward to reading more. It is hard to write a review based on the start of a story but I am enjoying it so far.
Can’t wait to read more and see what happens next! Already love the story line. More, please!!! Thank you.
The art is beautiful, and from the storyline so far, PUMPKINHEADS looks like it's going to be an absolute winner.
Unfortunately, I can't really say that for sure, because this is only an 18-page sampler (half of which is composed of filler pages). I feel like the publisher is doing a disservice to their reviewers and the creators of this graphic novel by offering such a small sample size that I can't even justify giving this an advance review on my blog or building hype for it until the full book releases.
It's really hard to decide if I want to give this 5 books for the book itself, or 1 star for how frustrated I am with the excerpt's length, so I'll leave it in the middle at 3 stars.
This 18 page ARC of Rainbow Rowell's first graphic novel finds Josiah and Deja on the last night of their pumpkin patch season before going to college. Josiah has been the Most Valuable Pumpkin Patch for four of the last five years. Since it is their last night, Josiah's best friend Deja has moved their work from the Succotash Hut to the Pie Palace; determined that tonight is the night shy Josiah will talk to the "Fudge Girl." For three years he has only spoken about her, not to her. Deja responds to Josiah by stating "friends don't let friends live small lives" when he freezes as to what he will say to Marcy. The graphics are very well drawn and the two characters have realistic bodies ( no pencil-thin, top heavy, crazy abs here.) Since the setting is a pumpkin patch on Halloween and with Deja pushing Josiah to "take his shot" with Marcy, readers will connect with Josiah's timidness and Deja's take- your chance and see what happens-it's now or never- attitude. Can't wait to read the rest in Fall 2019.
This graphic novel seems promising. I was disappointed that this sample was so short, so it gave little time to learn much about the characters beyond their job and friendship to one another.
So stinkin' cute! Deja deserves the Best Best Friend Award and I can't wait to see Josiah talk face to face with the Fudge Shoppe girl. The artwork is beautiful and the story is engaging. I'll definitely be purchasing a hard copy of the finished version when it releases... Who am I kidding? I'm going to go preorder it as soon as I finish typing this review! 4 out of 5 wine glasses.
What a cute start to what looks to be a fun graphic novel. I think fans of Rainbow Rowell will especially enjoy this story and artwork. The characters were already likable, even with this short preview and the artwork and use of color was beautiful. I look forward to reading the entire thing when it is released.
It is really hard for me to get a grasp on what this book will be like because this is a teaser that is less than 20 pages. I'll have to wait for the full release.
It's hard to rate a book based on 16 pages but I see potential. I'll reserve judgement until I read the full graphic novel but if I were to judge it by what I've read, I definitely want to read more.
I love Rainbow Rowell, and the teaser given would lead me to believe that this will be another great YA story from her. However, I could not view the accompanying illustrations (tried multiple downloads, and on different computers). I could only view the text, so I'm not able to really assess the overall quality of the book. Sorry I can't give a better review, but I would feel confident in saying that as long as the illustrations are powerful, the story should do well. Thanks -
I was disappointed to that this was only the first 18 pages. It is hard to give a rating to just the first two chapters.
This graphic novel follows two friends, Josiah and Deja, who work at a pumpkin patch and it is their last season working their because they are headed off to college. Deja is pushing Josiah to talk to the girl he's had a crush on for years and make their last night at the pumpkin patch memorable.
I really enjoyed the artwork, and even though I only got the first 18 pages, I was interested and would someday love to read the full story.
The ARC was for the first 18 pages and it was a nice way to introduce the story. The friendship between Deja and Josiah looks so adorable and supportive. The art is so great! I love the cozy autumnal setting of a pumpkin patch, approaching Halloween. I'm invested and want to read more.
A cute start to this story - I was expecting more than just a sampler, though. The first 18 pages don't set up the backstory described in the blurb, so it will be interesting to see how that plays out.
The premise of the graphic novel Pumpkinheads is very appealing. Two teenagers saying goodbye to their job in the pumpkin patch after working there each fall of high school. Will they make it the best fall yet or do the same they've done each year. I was only given a sample to read, but enjoyed what I did read.
Really like the art. A line or two made me smile, but I can't really say the story has grabbed me much within the first 18 pages.
I enjoyed this snippet of the graphic novel. I think that this has a promising start. I will say that the listing for this request seemed like I would be receiving the full edition so it was disappointing to see that it was not. I look forward to hopefully reading the full work one day. I cannot really review just a two chapter sampler.
This delightful graphic novel follows Josiah and Deja as they finish up their final season working at the local pumpkin patch before they go to college. Deja makes it her mission to get Josiah to talk to his longtime crush, the girl who works at the fudge stand, as well as have the best time possible before it's all over.
This excerpt is well written and the illustrations are so cute and colorful. I was pulled into the story, and I can't wait to read more. I'm definitely going to get a copy when this book releases!
This preview just gave me a taste of what the whole graphic novel will hold, and I cannot wait to buy it!
I really enjoyed the short section of Pumpkinheads provided by NetGalley. I will definitely be buying the full graphic novel for my library. The artwork is beautifully colorful and feels like autumn. The selection of the story feels just like a Rainbow Rowell novel and the little bit we get to see of the characters makes me excited to see how they develop over the story. I can't wait to read the whole thing.
