I enjoyed the preview chapter of this work by Rainbow Rowell. I enjoy most works by her and cannot wait to read the rest of the novel.
Short excerpt but looks promising. Solid, believable dialogue. Humorous, mad eyes me smile, but this isn’t a lot on which to judge. It’s Rainbow Rowell, though, so I imagine it’ll be good.
Faith Erin Hicks and Rainbow Rowell collaborating on a graphic novel? YES, please! The ARC was a chapter excerpt, so I don't have a lot to go on, but what I did read looks good. Deja and Josiah are "seasonal best friends" who work together at a pumpkin patch in Omaha, Nebraska. This Halloween season is different, because they're both seniors in high school, so who knows where life will take them? Josiah is feeling the bittersweet feels, but Deja doesn't want him to wallow; she wants him to finally talk to the girl he likes.
Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks are both brilliant writers, with a huge fan base here at my library. The little of Pumpkinheads that I've read so far sounds like this is going to be a great character-driven story with humor and all the feelings. The artwork is realistic and looks great, and the characters - at least, the two main characters - are diverse, with a white male and female of color.
I'm looking forward to this one.
The book looks great, and I'm a fan of their matching outfits, but outside of that the sample was really to brief to get a sense for the story.
It was a chapter sampler, but I really enjoyed what I read. I'm hoping we see more of his best friend and she gets agency outside of her trying to set up her white male best friend with a girl.
Sadly this was only a sample chapter, I'm so excited to read it all. I've already pre-order it. The story seems really cool and the artstyle is so vibrant and cool.
This was a cute preview of Pumpkinheads. The graphic novel format will be devoured by reluctant readers. I also liked the personalities of the two main characters in the first chapter I was able to preview.
I love the first chapter of this, provided by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review!
It has the fun banter we've come to expect (and cherish) from Rainbow Rowell, and Faith Erin Hicks' illustrations are gorgeous and full of life.
I'm so excited to see where the rest of this graphic novel goes!
It's hard to write a review of this title because it was only a chapter sample (which was disappointing but...). However, from what I saw, the artwork was beautiful! I also like where the story is headed. There aren't tons of true YA graphic novels out there - graphic novels with teen characters. For that reason alone, I will likely purchase this title when it comes out.
I really enjoy a Halloween-themed book. From the 18-page preview that I was invited to read on Netgalley, I am excited for more. The artwork is amazing.
Really short preview chapter, but I really like the dynamic between the two characters. Can't wait to read more.
I loved this chapter sampler. I like the comic book style of this book. Who would not love a Halloween, pumpkin patch, going off to college, best friends with a possible love triangle in the pumpkin mix for their next read?
I am currently working with a youth that does not like to read books in a book format, I let them read this sampler, and they were hooked. They enjoyed reading in the comic book style format of this book. So many curriculum ideas from what I have read so far. My students and I want more. We all kept looking at the pages on the bottom of the screen, as we knew this sampler was ending. We are so excited to find out what happens. I will be buying this book when it is released for me and a copy for my classroom. As this was a chapter sampler I gave a rating of 5 stars because I know it will be a great book when it comes out Thank you for letting me review this chapter sampler for a honest review.
Rainbow Rowell is one of my favorite authors, and Pumpkinheads promises to be a fabulous addition to her oeuvre. Based on this chapter sampler, her graphic novel with illustrator Faith Erin Hicks offers realistic, vulnerable, charming characters in a perfect setting for a YA focus. Josiah and Deja are embarking on their last day working at the pumpkin patch before they leave for college. Deja is determined that Josiah will gather enough nerve to talk to his long-time crush, another employee.
Rowell's insight into relationships is always enough to make me giddy. I can't wait to read Pumpkinheads!!
I cannot WAIT for this graphic novel to come out! I have been collecting all of Rainbow Rowell's books for my classroom for the last four years, and this will be the perfect edition to our "graphic novel unit" in Young Adult Literature! My students are always grappling with how to walk away gracefully, and what it means to move on, so this will be something everyone can love and understand!
I don't believe I have read anything by Rainbow Rowell that I didn't not only like, but loved. This is no exception. Her vivid characters really come to life in this graphic novel when paired with the charming illustrations. I would be happy to showcase this book on my classroom bookcase.
Just the first chapter but I’m already hooked and can’t wait for the rest! Rowell is always a fantastic author and I love the characters she creates. This was not a let down for her usual fare.
So far, this was absolutely adorable. This was just a chapter sampler, but Faith Erin Hicks and Rainbow Rowell are clearly going to be a winning combo. I can't wait to read the rest!
**Disclaimer: I received a free chapter sampler of Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks from First Second Books through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to them.
Pumpkinheads is a YA contemporary graphic novel that is hitting shelves on August 27th. As this was a chapter sampler, I do not have a full rating for you, however, I did enjoy it.
Here is the summary from NetGalley:
In Pumpkinheads, beloved writer Rainbow Rowell and Eisner Award–winning artist Faith Erin Hicks have teamed up to create this tender and hilarious story about two irresistible teens discovering what it means to leave behind a place—and a person—with no regrets.
Deja and Josiah are seasonal best friends.
Every autumn, all through high school, they’ve worked together at the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world. (Not many people know that the best pumpkin patch in the whole wide world is in Omaha, Nebraska, but it definitely is.) They say good-bye every Halloween, and they’re reunited every September 1.
But this Halloween is different—Josiah and Deja are finally seniors, and this is their last season at the pumpkin patch. Their last shift together. Their last good-bye.
Josiah’s ready to spend the whole night feeling melancholy about it. Deja isn’t ready to let him. She’s got a plan: What if—instead of moping and the usual slinging lima beans down at the Succotash Hut—they went out with a bang? They could see all the sights! Taste all the snacks! And Josiah could finally talk to that cute girl he’s been mooning over for three years . . .
What if their last shift was an adventure?
So, admittedly I didn’t read the fine print when I requested this and thought I was getting to read the whole graphic novel. Alas, it was just a chapter sampler. However, it was a really good sampler! Graphic novels aren’t usually my thing because I just don’t ever think to grab them but I’m slowly getting ever so slightly more into them. This one caught my eye because of the name Rainbow Rowell. So far I’ve quite liked everything that I’ve read by her and so I wanted to check out her graphic novel work as well, which is where this NetGalley request came in.
The thing you notice about this sampler first is the art. The art is really lovely. It’s very different than other graphic novels I’ve read, but I still really like the style of it. The characters you meet are very distinct and they came across really well when it came to actions and expressions.
Story wise, I just barely got a taste of it, but I really think the rest of the book will be fantastic. The start was very strong. Even though it was only like 16 pages long, you still got a decent glimpse of who these characters were and their motivations going into the story.
Deja and Josiah are absolutely precious and their interactions felt so genuine and real. I really liked the dialogue, because, again, it felt genuine and real.
This graphic novel totally has potential to be the perfect cute fall read, so if you’re at all intrigued, I would suggest checking it out when the book releases on August 27th.
I was so excited when I heard that Rainbow Rowell had a graphic novel coming out--her books rank among some of my all-time favorites. While two chapters isn't near enough for me to say whether or not I like the book or not, I can say that the artwork is delightful and the characters are interesting. The dialogue isn't as funny or witty as I was hoping--especially considering Rowell's wizardry with dialogue--but again, two chapters doesn't feel like enough content to judge.
This is a chapter sampler.
The art by Hicks is colorful and animated. The story-line is wacky and huge lovey dovey crush infused. Would love to see more.
