Rainbow Rowell could write a grocery list and I would read it for the rest of my life. She can do no wrong! This little preview of Pumpkinheads was so delightful. I am looking forward to reading the rest.
I don't feel that I can give a sufficient review because there was not sufficient material. All I can say is, "So far, so good."
The excerpt didn't really grab me - I like the art and the setting, but the characters and the romance were pretty flimsy. Maybe they get better - hard to say after 18 pages - but I don't think I'll remember to check this one out once it's released.
Having only 18 pages to read was enough to leave me intrigued and ready to read the rest of the novel. I'm excited about Rainbow Rowell's foray into graphic novels because I'm sure the characters, dialogue, and dynamics will be high level. Thank you so much to the publisher for the preview. All reviews are my own.
Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks is a dream collaboration for me! Rowell's writing is fantastic (I've not read a thing by her I didn't like) and Hicks's art is some of my all-time favorite, not to mention her story-telling abilities as well! While I certainly wish this was more than a sampler, I am also now even more excited for the book than I was before. Many of my coworkers are also looking forward to this book and I can't wait to have it on my selves for my patrons (and myself)!
I received an 18 page preview from the publisher on NetGalley for my honest, unbiased opinion.
While 18 pages is traditionally not much of a preview, this galley allowed me a little bit more of an insight, considering that it is a graphic novel, which are relatively slim anyways. When I first heard of Rowell doing a graphic novel collaboration, I was stoked because I'm a huge fan of her work, but was fearful of the artwork being able to capture her story just right. I should not have worried though. This preview set my mind at ease with cute drawings that remind me of comic section of the newspaper that I stole from the newspaper on Sunday mornings and that moment of reminiscing made the reading experience all the more enjoyable.
If you're a fan of Rainbow Rowell's stories, or enjoy other stories such as "The Prince and the Dressmaker" by Jen Wang, give this one a chance!
It's hard to tell with 18 pages, but I already like this—from the illustrations (orange and green aesthetic with lots of diversity in the characters) and the dialogue. I'll definitely be checking this out when its released in long form.
Three stars because I have to rate it, but don't feel comfortable rating something after just 18 pages.
I read the chapter and then let my 16 year old Rainbow Rowell fan read it too - we like it and can't wait for the next installment! I love her novels and I keep plenty of graphic novels in my classroom for my students. This should be a great addition.
This short graphic novel featured starred Deja and Josiah. The graphics are amazing, and the story is cute. I am waiting for the next installment to see if Josiah and Marcy talk or if Josiah and Deja end up professing their love for each other. So many unanswered questions. Guess we'll have to wait for the next installment.
This will be a must-read just based on the publisher's reputation and the author's fan base. Two friends prepare for their last night working on the pumpkin farm before heading off to college. One is sad to see this chapter in his life end while the other is determined to make the last night count. She made plans to push her friend to reach out to his crush before the opportunity is gone. The artist/author included a diverse supporting cast as well as the main characters. The illustrations give the story a bright, happy feeling from the start. This book could be pitched to younger readers based on the feeling but older readers will enjoy the relationship between the two friends.
This is based on a preview of 16 pages. Looking forward to seeing the rest of the story.
With this just being a chapter sampler it is hard to give an honest review. From the beginning the characters are quite relatable and likable, though nobody original. You have the spunky best-friend pushing the shy great-guy into facing his crush before it is too late to do anything about it. The dialog and art help make these two characters become real to this reader which is quite impressive seeing as how it was done in less than 20 pages. I read for a middle school audience and graphic novel romance is sorely needed. I look forward to purchasing this book when it becomes available.
This sampler was so sweet! The illustrations are colorful and adorable, with a friendship I loved from the first cell! I can't wait to read the entirety of this in August!
More like a short comic ...or maybe I'm missing something. I only saw two chapters. Cute premise. Great illustrations. I just want to read the rest...now.
I didn't realize this was only an excerpt when I requested it, so I can't really give the book much of a rating. I liked what I read so far but I didn't get a lot of information from it. The illustrations are cute and the characters seem like fun, but I can't say for sure. Guess I'll just have to wait for the library to have it so I can read the full thing and know for sure.
This is a super cute chapter sampler! I was a bit disappointed that I didn't get to read the entire thing, but graphic novels should really be read by physical copy anyway. I already like Josiah and Deja's friendship and am interested to see how things go! Also--I want to learn Fudge Girl's name. Is it really Marcy or was Deja just trying to make it more realistic? We'll see!
I don’t feel like I can write an accurate review from an except. I’ll review the full title if I can read the whole book.
This sampler was a lot of fun. Rowell always does a fantastic job creating characters even within this sort sampler! Can't wait to read and see the rest!
I liked this sampler a lot! I feel like I got to know the characters even in the short amount I read. They seem real and very likable. The plot is interesting.
This is a great first chapter and I'm very eager to read more and see how the story unfolds. The art is sweet and gentle and suits the story perfectly, and I was able to follow it nicely. Graphic novels are becoming more popular and I'm glad this is going to be one of them.
This one looks promising--I'll definitely be reading the full volume when it's published. The dialogue is a tad exposition=heavy, but it's also sweet and funny. Rowell achieves the rare feat of making corny dialogue funny and charming rather than just annoying. The illustrations are also great--I love the pan-outs of the festival. It's too early to say for sure, but I'm betting on a love triangle.
