I have loved every book in this series and that did not change with The Traitor's Kingdom. Watching the confidence and trust grow between this couple is as endearing as it is hopeful. Their relationship was essentially built upon lies and watching them learn to communicate as they learn to be stronger individuals has been very special and makes me love them together even more. Learning healthy communication is hard and I really appreciate it when authors take the time to show that it isn't easy but possible.
This series has been amazing and I'm so pleased with this ending. The characters continued to build upon their already well established and believable relationships and I'm really loving how the *end* of some of those relationships played out (trying not to spoil!)
I am a huge YA fantasy reader and have read dozens of books both with magic and without. I am so thankful this book has all of the action and kingdoms and romance and thrill of a fantasy story but without the dark twisted magic!! It's a breath of fresh air. The female lead is super intelligent and the romantic tension is so fun!!! I love this book and cannot wait for the next.
Unfortunately, I did not get. the chance to read this ARC prior to its release--I'm hoping to work through my backlist now that we're home for the coming weeks!--but we did end up buying this book for the library collection to complete the series
A great wrap-up to the series, this installment takes Sage and Alex through more political upheaval and to the brink of what would be a terrible war. Can the two use their skills to navigate the peace talks and settle things between the nations, or is their land destined to be decimated for decades to come?
Fans of the series will not be disappointed by this ending, and this makes for one great complete series to recommend for fans of Rae Carson and Kristin Cashore.
The conclusion of this trilogy is gripping with action, sass and just an amazing story. Great characters, great character development. Truly enjoyed this book!
The Traitor's Kiss was my absolute favorite book of 2018. It was fun and romantic. It had a great hero and a great heroine, each fleshed out. Unfortunately, the two subsequent books have not been able to capture the same fun (and swoony) feelings of the first. The second book was depressing. The characters fell apart and some of their more endearing traits (Sage's relentlessness, Alex's loyal rigidity and secrecy) became annoying. There was a lot of frustration for the reader as you want to yell JUST TALK TO EACH OTHER. I felt that this installment split the difference a bit. However, I am less fascinated (in this series) by the political intrigue and want more of the characters' relationship. The good parts, not the fussing and whining. I will continue to read Erin Beaty's work and recommend that others do too, but that first one was good stuff!
Sage is entrusted with king's faith as she represents the kingdom in peace negotiations with their hostile southern neighbor. She sets up a backdoor conference with the queen that ends with an assassination attempt. As she and the queen work their way back to the negotiations, more deaths occur and the assassin remains at large.
Themes: Women and the power they are allowed to wield; enemies can be everywhere.
Verdict: Not as strong as the first two but fans will be satisfied.
Thank you NetGalley for providing me with an e-ARC of this book.
Just wow! What an amazing way to finish this trilogy. I truly loved how the story came together at the end. The subtle hints the author wove into the storyline to build the suspense of who the traitor actual is was seamless. I loved how tit didn't feel like the romance to a backseat to the action/adventure part of the story, but it also never got in the way. Erin Beaty truly knows how to balance the different elements of romance with adventure in her books. This has been my favorite fantasy series so far, and I can't wait to reread the series again.
WOW! What an epic conclusion to this trilogy! I am literally in awe of the way that this series has become so complex and intricate with each passing book. It's easily one of my fave book series of all time and I already want to re-read it. I love the attention that the author paid to the injuries that Sage endured in the second book and the mental ramifications of it. I LOVE how the romantic pairings are just interwoven into the story and the drama that is in the story doesn't involve the romance. I cannot wait to see more from this author.
Perfect ending to a fantastic series. Action, politics, romance will leave you flying through the pages of this changing world. Full of lies and manipulation you will not know who to trust and who will win the ultimate war. Will they finally find peace in the countries at war or is peace an illusion that they may never attain? Read this beautiful series and final book to find out.
Thanks NetGalley for the advanced copy. I found the writing in this book to be wonderful, absolutely engrossing. Characters grow and their actions are believable and genuine (hence why it's so engrossing. The plot lagged a bit for me, but Sage and her journey continued to be entertaining and fun! However, I would really enjoy a few detailed maps to help me keep everything straight. The ending was very satisfying and closed most loose ends. I judge a series by its ending and this one hit the spot!
The Traitor’s Kingdom: What a wonderful way to end a series!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The series ends the final adventures of Sage, Alex, Clare, Lani, Casseck, the Norsari, etc.
The pacing of the final book is steady, and I dare say that I devoured this final book, so that I could finally discover the antagonist. This book might even be my favorite book of the trilogy; however, each book stands on its own merits, and I enjoyed getting to watch Sage mature as a protagonist and develop in her character and personality. By the end of the Kingdom, she’s not the same girl she was at the beginning, but the way she’s matured and developed is consistent with her character’s issues and experiences throughout the book series.
Had I not read all three books in succession, I might have needed to go back and reread Books 1 and 2, which I would have done happily. I can see this trilogy being on my reread list.
Thanks to Macmillan Children's Publishing Group via NetGalley for an ARC of the book in exchange for an honest review.
I Love this series so i flew through this book! I did not think i was going to like this series but once you start it you can't stop. The plot is constantly moving so i was never bored which i often am with books. I recommend everyone to read this series!! So Good!
This review is bittersweet because I absolutely loved the book but I'm devastated that the series is over. The plot was definitely a page-turner and lived up to the first two books. The characters, new and old, were well-written and consistently challenged and developed throughout the course of the book. I loved the romance and friendship elements between the characters as well. Overall, I liked that the book was tied up but still leaves room to imagine a future for the characters and the plot.
This series has some of the most beautiful covers and I'm sad to say that's all it has going for it. This was a journey and not really a good one. The plotline had potential but was just poorly executed. This final book was unnecessary except to wrap up the relationships and the potential "war" between Demora, Casmun and whatever that third country was. Nothing really happened in this book. It is all about peace treaties between the 3 countries and how they could meet these terms while all still hating each other? It was odd and slow moving, no advancement on peace until the women decide to handle it themselves.
The Good:
We finally get to see who gets together, who gets married and where they all end up after it's all said and done. It was nice to get closure on the relationship aspects of this book versus just leaving us assuming how things wrap up.
I also enjoyed the mystery villain and that it had me guessing the whole time who it could be. In fact, that was the reason why I even bothered finishing this book. I just had to know if my initial guess was right. From the very beginning I thought I know who was behind all the chaos treacherous plans, but as the book continues I found myself unsure and even second guessing my pick based on the new clues Sage and Alex came across. In the end my initial guess was correct but it was nice to not know outright throughout reading.
The Bad:
There were so many recycled plotlines from the second book in this third book. Whether is was Sage and Alex having the same pointless "nothing fights" (thanks Dane Cook) to only Sage being able to bridge the gap between nations and not listening to anyone regarding how to do it. Sage has had no real character growth since the third book and it really showed with her repeating her past mistakes and getting the same results but somehow also saving the day. I wanted more for her and Alex.
Clare was annoying as hell and I couldn't wait to be done with her. I get her fiance dies but that does not mean you get to become a needy, annoying, superior, judgemental bit**. I hated having to listen to her constant snips at Sage and her decisions along with her relationship with Alex. She has always been such a good friend and person and I don't think Beaty did her justice in this book, in fact she ruined Clare for me.
There were so many secondary characters that I loved from the first book, but throughout this series they had faded into the background until they were just mentioned by name or just seemed to be mentioned just to let you know that they still existed. I missed Ash, Robert, Cass and the other soldiers who seemed important in book 1 but by book 3 they were mentioned at the end like I should have known them but I had no idea who they were anymore.
My final complaint is I still have no idea why this series has "Traitor" in the title. No traitor's kiss in the first book, no traitor's are ruined in the second book and there are no true traitor's kingdom in the second book since there are peace negotiations nor anyone secretly in one kingdom working for another. I wish the series had been titled differently with a little more of a hint as to what you were getting into.
Final Thoughts:
If you like a light read with some fluff and relationship drama thrown in then you might enjoy this series. I was expecting something more like "The Winner's Curse" series by Marie Rutkoski but that was far from what I got. I'm glad all the loose ends were wrapped up though and that it was sort of a happy ending, but it wasn't like I was expecting anything else.
As someone who read and liked the previous two books in the series, I was quite content with how the trilogy came to a close in The Traitor’s Kingdom. There is a lot more political intrigue and speculation and the action is a bit more subdued than the second book, but the stakes are just as high and the tenuous bonds fostered throughout the series become taught and strained in the final installment. A lot of it revolves around the healing process for Sage and her companions, both physically and mentally, and the story shows that not all battles are won without sacrifices. Overall, I’m glad to see how the story for these characters I’ve grown attached to come to an awaited close, and I’ll certainly miss the series.
This book series has been a mess. The first book was all over the place in quality but there was potential. Sadly, the quality just declined. In this third installment, almost nothing happens. People sit around and talk. Plot points are recycled from other books in the series (and this book in the series especially felt like bits and pieces of much better novels I have read). More forgettable side characters. More bland romance (I swear half this book is driven by the lead characters’ desire to bang). This book series is just, meh. Not worth your time.
Wow...oh wow. I cannot say how much this series has surprised me. Book three is excellent and readers won't be disappointed in it's conclusion. Thank you Erin Beaty for writing a series from beginning to end that captivates and keeps you coming back to a great novel each time. I feel sad that the series came to a conclusion, but it was done in a way that makes you thankful to the author. Please read this series you won't be disappointed!!
