Fascinating second novel from Rea Frey. The characters are well developed and the story moves along nicely. Just when you think you know what's going on, this story flips and twists back on itself and you're left stunned. A multi-layered domestic sunspenser that will hook you from the start and hurtle you all the way to the shocking end!
This book was an intriguing mix of twists and turns, complete with an ending that I never expected. It was not an easy book to follow. I felt I really had to pay close attention and even reread some pages..
The author wove a very tangled web.
Grace and Lee – best friends for years – are both single moms with young sons. But their lives are vastly different. Grace’s ex-husband is still in the picture, and they share custody. Grace has a fairly normal life. Lee, on the other hand, is raising her son by herself. Mason is on-the-spectrum, and Lee’s days revolve around taking care of him. Noah, Mason’s at-home, teacher, is a huge help to Lee, but it seems his has ulterior motives for wanting to spend so much time with Mason. When Lee, Grace, and their friends go away for a long weekend, secrets are revealed, lives are destroyed, and one of the women dies in a tragic accident.
Wow. Wow, wow, wow. I have no words. BECAUSE YOU’RE MINE is a suspenseful novel full of twists, turns, and secrets. The novel is told from three different perspectives – Grace, Lee, and Noah. None of these characters is the most reliable narrator, and the reader will be left questioning how much of their story is the truth or is it just a story what they want the other characters and the readers to believe. The novel also bounces back-and-forth between the past and the present – showing the events that took place that led us to current action. Grace, Lee, and Noah all have secrets – some of which are easy to guess given the hints while others will take the reader by surprise. Certain parts of the novel seemed a little too far-fetched, but it was still an intriguing story about how secrets can affect us and how far people will go to get what they want.
I was hoping for so much more than what I got, it was good dont get me wrong, a little out there as far as the plot goes and I'm really not fond of the whole chapter after chapter of "I have a secret, I have to tell the person" like, ok tell them already! or just not talk about it, and have the secret come out of nowhere. I feel like a lot of the book is just a filler in between big reveals, some of it was hard to read, I couldn't connect with the characters or what was going on, I was more interested in Mason and less interested in the actual people.
Aside from all that, I did read the book and enjoy it, and I liked that I was so surprised with the ending, with how big of a reader I am and how much I've read in my lifetime, it's pretty hard to get the jump on me. I feel if there was a book 2 to this, I would probably grab ahold of it, and find out what happens next.
I slogged my way through this one and the further I got the less interested I was in what would eventually happen to the characters. Unlike Not Her Daughter, which kept me turning pages to read it almost straight through, Because You're Mine never really hooked me.
Wow, wow, wow. Because you’re mine is an unexpected favorite. I am in awe that the final two pages of this psychological thriller, have me doubting and rethinking everything that I read. I almost want to reread the entire story and look at it from an alternative perspective. I am absolutely dumbstruck that I did not see an entire plot twist happen in front of my eyes! A great story, with a spectacular ending. If you like Gone Girl or Verity, you will love Because you’re mine. 5 stars.
A great thriller which had me gripping my kindle tightly. My pulse rose and my breath hitched. Such was the power of this book.
Lee spent all her time looking after her special needs son Mason who had a tutor Noah. Lee decided to go on a break with friend Grace leaving her son behind in the care of Noah.. And in those 48 hours, someone was dead.
My first book by author Rea Frey had me gasping at certain points. There were secrets in the lives of all three characters Lee, Grace, and Noah... With 3 POV, the book kept me hopping down the pages trying to find how everything was connected.
Reading thrillers for so many years, I could feel certain parts sounded familiar, but the ending sure made it all worth it. It made a shiver go down my spine
A fabulous thriller-y read
This was an okay read for me. One that held my interest enough to keep me reading, but never really grabbed me like some books do. It does have some chills, shocks, and even a bit of heartbreak and was written very well, but just wasn’t my favorite read. I would recommend to those who enjoy very good writing without intense dark thrills,
Will use in a challenge and recommend to the members of Chapter Chatter Pub!
This is the second novel from Rea Frey a Nashville author. She doesn't disappoint with her second book. This book centers on single mom, Lee and three of her friends, her son Mason and his tutor Noah. Lee's life is consumed with her son Mason who is on the spectrum. Mason life demands struction and sameness. He has a tutor Noah that comes to his home daily and seems to be doing Mason some good. One of Lee's friends talks her into a get away weekend with two other friends and talks Noah into keeping Mason. As you can imagine everyone's life will never be the same again after this weekend. There are lots of twist and turns and it is so hard not to give spoilers. Please read this book. It won't take long because you can't put it down. Then make sure you pick your chin up with you finish.
Because You're Mine is a great thriller that's told from three points of view - Lee, a single mom to Mason: Grace, a single mom to Luca; and Noah, Mason's teacher. Lee and Grace are close friends who initially bonded through their sons. Lee's son Mason has special needs and requires an in home teacher, Noah. Lee and Grace go on a much-needed girls vacation with with two other moms for a girls weekend - and one never makes it home. Secrets, lies and truths come to light.
I really enjoyed this book! While some things were easier to figure out, the ending really surprised me!!! It was one of those books that you think about long after you've finished it, going over details again and again.
Thank you to Rea Frey, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC of this great book!
I received a free e-copy of Because You're Mine by Rea Frey from NetGalley for my honest review.
A thrilling, twisted and suspenseful read.
Lee is a single mom and has a special needs child named Mason. Mason is autistic and Lee doesn't ever feel like she can trust anyone to help with Mason. Lee is getting ready to leave and go on holiday with her friends but is scared to leave Mason behind. She does end up going and Mason is under the care of Noah. Noah, however, has his own agenda. But then someone ends up dead. What happened? Was it an accident or murder?
Everyone has secrets. It's just a matter of time before all the secrets are expose
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me read a copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.
This is the first book I've read by Rea Frey and I really enjoyed it. She had me guessing trying to figure out how it was all going to end. I was very surprised by the ending. I will be reading more books by Rea.
I enjoyed every minute reading Because You're Mine. I read a lot of thrillers/suspense novels and, recently, have been left bored. There is absolutely no boredom to be had while flying through this book. Rea keeps you on your toes throughout. While you will likely realize a few plot twists along the way, you just wait until the very last chapter. This is one of those books where you get a quarter of the way through and you think to yourself, "Well, what else could possibly happen?" and then Rea blasts you to the past for another twist along the way. This story alternates between differing perspectives and altering timelines. It is a story of four girlfriends and mothers with young children that decide to take a mountain trip away for a few days where one of the mothers will tumble to her death. You will know this from the first chapter and you will know she is responsible for her own death. So what else could there possibly be to this story? Well, you MUST find out!
Full of drama, lies and suspense, this tale of three lives that will intersect leaving one dead.
Lee appears to be a single mother who is obsessive about her son Mason's safety. As a child on the spectrum, she trusts no one else to care for him. 24/7 Lee is there. Homeschooling, distrustful Lee.
Grace, divorced single mother to Luca. Grace loves Mason and he loves her. She gets him. When she introduces Lee to Noah, an Occupational Therapist, not only does Mason fall for him but so does Lee.
When Grace finally convinces Lee to come on a group girls weekend with Noah watching Mason, one of them will not return. And that is when secrets begin to come out. Lee's version of how Mason was conceived and Grace's confession about Noah.
This was a twisty edge of your seat waiting to see who was even telling one truth!
Noah has his own agenda. He also has his own secrets. And his are exposed along with everyone else. Almost everyone else, because that ending! A suspenseful and compulsive read!
Well Done!

Wowza what a ride! This book is told by 3 points of view. Lee, a single mom to Mason. Grace, a single mom to Luca. Noah, who is Mason's teacher. Lee and Grace become friends after meeting and connecting with their sons. Mason is autistic and needs an at home teacher for that one on one care. Grace is friends with Noah and connects Lee with Noah. Lee and Grace go away with two other moms for a girls weekend. One doesn't return home. There are so many secrets that come to light with all three of the main characters just when you think you have something figured out, you realize nope you are wrong! The end floored me and I had to read it a few times to let it all sink in. I thoroughly enjoyed this books with all its twists and turns. I received an advanced readers copy and all opinions are my own.
Addictive, thrilling, vindictive, and edge of your seat suspense. This book was a joy to read from cover to end. I was so immersed in this novel it was so hard to put down. We are introduced to several characters in this novel. There is Lee, a single mother of a son named Mason who is on the spectrum and who has appointments at their home with an Occupational Therapist Noah. Noah really likes Noah and all the hard work her does for her son Mason and other children like him. After time, they form a close bond and think fondly of one another and their friendship grows. Lee's best friend is Grace, a divorced mother who actually introduced Noah to Lee. Lee is so close with Grace and Grace gets along so well with Lee's son Mason.
Lee's days are very structured and everything is perfectly planned out each day, and it works for Lee and her son Mason. One day Lee and Grace, along with some other girlfriends, decide to go away to a mountain retreat to relax and have fun. It was difficult to convince Lee to go as she enjoys the daily structure and routine in Mason's life and is weary of leaving him behind for a few days. But after much convincing from Noah and Grace, and Noah offering to stay with Mason, Lee decides that it would be fun and a good idea to go. During the trip, someone winds up dead. Who is it? Was it an accident? Who has died?
I enjoyed reading about the various different dynamics is this novel, between best friends Lee and Grace, and then Lee's relationship with Noah. Noah seemed like a wonderful man, he was great with Mason, he was a good supportive friend to Lee, and was handsome and charming. Lee couldn't help but develop feelings for him. In fact, he is the first man she has felt this way about in a very long time.
Amid all the fun in the resort secrets are also revealed. The ladies all want to know who Mason's father is. Up until now, Lee wouldn't talk about it let along let them know Mason's father and who he is. Lee decides to tell Grace a secret once all the other ladies are gone to bed late one night. What secret did she reveal?
Overall I loved this book. It is a definite must read to add to your books this year. There is so much drama, lies, secrets, betrayal, shocking twists that you will not see coming.
Grace. Lee. Noah. Three friends whose lives are connected through the stories of the past and the present. Living in Nashville, Lee’s son is Autistic and revolves her entire life around him. Grace, her best friend, finds Lee the perfect title for her son. Enter Noah, handsome and smart and caring. Lee can’t help but develop a crush on Noah, and she even trusts him to watch her son while she has a girls weekend away. But the confessions that are made on the girls weekend lead to secrets unraveling, and someone ends up dead. As the story continues to unravel, and the friends navigate the loss, more secrets unfold. And just when you think you've figured out the ending, Rea Frey throws one last twist you never saw coming.
2.5/5 stars
After absolutely loving Frey's first suspense novel that I binge read in one day last year, Not Her Daughter, I am more than disappointed with this one.
Here's the thing - the writing is quite on point, I also binge read this in one day, and whoever edited this did an amazing job, because for an arc copy this was flawless (grammatically, and it always makes me so happy), but either the topic, or the execution of this is horribly wrong.
If I sound like I'm not sure, it's because I'm not. I just don't know what the author was going for, honestly. And I can only hope that she wasn't going for what I'm hoping she wasn't going for. Makes sense, no? Good. I don't want to spoil anything till the book comes out on August 6th, 2019.
Sure, Because You're Mine is compulsive and readable, but when you stop and actually think about it - it’s just a huge mess, with a very far fetched twist that only works if you consider ALL of the narrators completely unreliable.
If you believe all of the narrators then the whole book and the part when the twists happens (the very ending) are two very separate things that lack cohesiveness. It would have worked if the twist was tied together to something substantial at the beginning. Maybe an anonymous opening by that person - so the reader can actually be on track with the events and when the twist does come, it wouldn't feel like something thought of at the very last second, but a plot all along.
Sure, there are hints, but the narration itself contradicts them. Also, the way everything ended made me think that the author condones that kind of behavior? Don't get me wrong, I love a dark novel told from a psychotic perspective - it's chillingly refreshing, just read Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent. That book is a great example of how very, very bad people are presented very, very well. Because you're Mine just left a very bad taste in my mouth after I was done with it.
Structure wise, I was very annoyed with the age old trick of "hey this character has a secret, but I'm not going to reveal it until later one so you will just have to keep reading". The novel didn't give you anything but empty promises and filler material till 38%. Many people would have given up by that point. Speaking of filler, the book is full of it. Some chapters were nothing but filler, that were only there to postpone the big reveals, to stretch the page count.
I loved the character of Mason, he's so pure and hilarious, but by the end of the story the focus shifted so far away from him, that I was left wondering - was his "condition" just for the diversity check point? Why wasn't it explained more, especially when the past was brought up?
I will be able to divulge more into details (especially on who I think was the true victim of this story) and spoilers after the book is published in the end of summer of 2019. Big thanks to the publisher St. Martin's Press for an early digital copy of the book provided via NetGalley.
I LOVED this book. This book kept me up late and made me late to work. I was surprised by the events in the middle of the book and shocked by the ending. It seemed like the major event in the story took place in the middle so I was worried that the rest of the book would be boring or unnecessary. I was wrong.
As a speech-language pathologist, I see firsthand how difficult it is for parents who have children who special needs to navigate school, therapy, and social environments. I appreciated the portrayal of Lee because I felt that it was very honest and accurate.
Great book! An edge of your seat read, keeping the final surprise a complete secret until the end. Well written characters with major secrets! I highly recommend this book and this author. Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for the opportunity to read an advance copy.
