I tried to get into it, but most of the times i felt lost and confused. Who was all these people? where were we exactly? why was it happening? I enjoyed the small part with Lillith, but the rest had me confused and a little bored. I think that is because i haven't read this author's books before and i jumped into a book before starting at the start. It would be cool to see it in a comic maybe i could've followed the story better then.
I'm a huge fan of Wayne Barlowe's art, so I jumped at the chance to read the first book, of which this is the sequel. The first novel, God's Demon, had an unexpectedly bittersweet ending, and I thought the story was finished. I am delighted to see that Barlowe has more stories to tell in this universe, and I was eager to revisit.
This sequel has every bit of imagination as the first story, and I loved revisiting the characters, to see what they were doing, in the aftermath of the events chronicled in the first book. This was a very satisfying book. Its so dense with imagery that the moment I finished, I started again at the beginning, because I wanted to catch all the nuances.
Barlowe has a nice, clear style of writing, that was easy for me to appreciate, without a lot of the flowery language that other writers would be tempted to use for such an environment. The imagery is very dense and detailed, and the characters, despite being demons of Hell, are actually sympathetic, and sometimes likable and admirable.
I hope Barlowe has more stories to tell about this world, and I'm looking forward to any more he cares to write.
