Quick yet intense. Addie owns Smiling Dog Books and enjoys her simple life in her small town. Addie begins having unsettling nightmares and can only confide in her bff, Gray. Things begin to unravel a bit for Addie when her nightmares start to become a reality. There are several people that seem to be after her, but why? She has a very simple and unimportant life. That is what she and the handsome detective need to find out. Will they get to the bottom of it before its too late?
This is described as a cozy mystery but there was really no mystery. Addie owns a bookstore in North Carolina and is having bad dreams. She stumbles across a body. More bodies are found. And then the book ends. The book is a short quick read but there is not enough story. The dreams are never explained nor are the bodies explained. There is the a beginning of a romance with Addie and a policeman that I guess will be explored in later volumes. I felt like I was reading just a few chapters in a rough draft of a longer book. I enjoy cozy mysteries but this one was missed the mark for me.
A short and sweet cozy mystery! I was able to read this book in one sitting but the author did a great job of taking all of the important cozy elements and wrapping them up in a small package! A few twists made me turn the pages as fast I could to find out whodunnit! If you're looking for a quick read I highly recommend this book.
A good beginning of a new cozy mystery series. The characters are fun. The plot is intriguing and looks like it will be ongoing through the series. It was a fast read, more of a novella. I enjoyed it enough to immediately grab the second story.
Addie Foster is dreaming of a mysterious man, and they are not pleasant dreams at all. One morning after another one of these nightmares, she discovers a body in the garage of the house next door. Jonah Wolfe is the detective on the case, and it soon turns out that Addie is a target.
This is an interesting story, with a very abrupt ending, and you will have to read the following books if you want to know how the story continues. I am not a fan of sudden cliff-hanger endings, so I didn’t appreciate this at all. I will probably read the next installments, because the story was quite interesting and gripping, and now I really want to know what is going on.
This story is really just the start of a bigger story. It introduces the characters, and we can see some of the interaction between them, but there really wasn’t enough time to develop it much. And this first little taster just created more questions than answers.
It was over so fast that I didn’t really get a solid impression of the characters. Addie’s world seems a bit small, with her book store and her one best friend. And the entire story is written from her point of view, so we never get a glimpse into what makes detective Wolfe tick.
Only start this book if you intend to read the others as well, otherwise it will leave you wanting.
I also posted a review on Goodreads.
Death Comes in Threes by Kimberley O'Malley is the first book in Addie Foster Mystery series and a great beginning.
Addie together with her best friend Gray runs a book store in a sleepy N.C. town. Until one day she stumbles upon a dead body and her life is turned up side down. International criminals want to kill her for no apparent reason and FBI uses her as a bait. To top it all, leading Detective Wolfe is someone who makes her heart beat faster.
But she is fighting to save her life and has no time to think about certain detective especially as he thinks she is hiding something.
Really charming and thoroughly entertaining story. I loved all characters, especially fun were the Aunties. I enjoyed Addie and Grey's easy banter and loving relationship.
Well plotted and executed mystery with an international theme and slightly serious and more sinister than an average cozy.
Lovely paced and easy to read, it's impossible to put down. I finished in one setting.
I can't wait to read the next book as the first one has a quite intriguing ending.
I recently discovered the cozy mystery genre and found that I really enjoy it. It's a fresh change of pace apart from what usually read and it's a lot less intense. Cozy mysteries are usually set in charming small towns, filled with quirky, gossipy characters and of course there is some type of mystery. Death Comes in Threes however, was rather disappointing. I really wanted to like this novel, there were even dogs on the cover, so I thought it would be an adorable fun read.
I just couldn't find much about this novel that I actually enjoyed. The whole thing felt a bit cliche. I didn't like the characters, the dialogue felt forced and just over the top. The gay best friend was very cliche and stereotypical and without much depth and the main character didn't feel real. Add all of that to a plot that felt half developed and a cringe-y romance and this whole book was just a bust for me.
I am a fan of cozy mysteries and this is one of the best I have read. The characters were strong and the plot line interesting. Everything clicked for me. I can't wait to start the next book! I received an e-book from NetGalley in return for an unbiased review.
This was a fast paced cozy mystery that I thoroughly enjoyed.
The mystery was exciting and the story line grabbed my attention from the very beginning.
I'm looking toward to reading more in this series.
This was a nice start to a new series, the characters are likeable, it was a very cosy thriller. A nice easy read
Death Comes in Threes by Kimberley O'Malley was an intriguing cozy mystery novella.
Ms. O'Malley has done a great job establishing the main characters for this series in this book. I liked Addie as she's a little quirky, independent and completely out of her element throughout the story. Her small town life is totally upended when international criminals seem to be looking for her. Her best friend, Greyson, and The Aunties are wonderful secondary characters that provided insight into Addie and humor into the story. Detective Wolfe definitely has eyes on Addie and I hope the next book provides more information regarding the brooding detective.
A fast paced plot that kept me turning the pages for a lovely afternoon read. The mystery behind the criminals actions carries over into the next book and I'm excited to read it.
A cozy murder mystery, and that’s exactly what it is. It’s a great read for lounging and relaxing. The story is captivating and enjoyable to read. I loved Addie as a character and girls. Overall I really liked this story and I am looking forward to reading more.
A very good start for a new cozy series.
It was entertaining and fun to read.
I loved the quirky cast of characters and the plot, full of twists and turns.
The mystery was good and it kept me guessing till the end.
I look forward to reading other books in this series as I think it will be a really good one.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC
A big thank you to NetGalley and Laura White for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. First time reading this author. I liked the characters at least Addis and Grey. The detective was ok. The ending was not really an ending to me. No real resolution. It is a cute cozy mystery. 3 stars
How does an innocent book store owner in small town North Carolina end up fearing for her life because of some international criminals? That is the question no one can answer. But the FBI, a hot detective and book store owner Adelaide Foster all hope someone can figure it out before it is too late.
This is the perfect book if you have a couple of hours and want a fun, light mystery with a touch of romance. It has likeable characters and the reader is left with a number of unanswered questions that will make you want to read the second book in the Addie Foster Mystery Series to see what happens.
Death Comes in Threes by Kimberley O'Malley is the first book in the Addie Foster Mystery Series, and my first book by this author. I really enjoyed this book and am looking forward to the next Addie Foster adventure. A fun, cozy mystery with plenty of twists and turns.
I received this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
"Death Comes in Threes" is my first time reading one of Kimberley O'Malley's novels. I was intrigued by the story from the beginning and Addie is a very fun, witty and likeable character. Grey is Addie's supportive and easy going BFF who is there for her on a moments notice. Throughout the short time period taking place in this book, Addie has some very frightening and unexpected events happen. She rides through them like a trooper and seems to come out unscathed. The inserting of a handsome Detective also always helps!
Some of the things I like about this novel are the energetic and funny characters. I love the Aunties and the dogs; albeit the thread of the two dogs I felt might have been overdeveloped. The novel was easy to read and the dialogue flows smoothly and naturally. The cover is also eye catching and makes you want to pick it up to see what it's about.
Some of the areas of "Death Comes in Threes" which fall flat for me are the mystery plot development, the overuse of some narratives and the length of the book. The mystery in the book isn't very deep and could use a bit more complexity and intrigue. I want to know more about the three strangers and their deaths and not just a quick note saying they died, end of the story. I also wish there were a few more chapters. The third death was rushed and seemed like the author just wanted to end the book so #3 mystery man is found dead. If the story is called "Death Comes in Threes" I want to know about what happens to them, not in a weird way, but have more of a story behind it.
Secondly, certain elements in the narrative were overused. Addie doesn't need to stand by the door to dismiss the dark brooding Detective every time he comes to see her. Furthermore, every character in the story doesn't need to stop and say how cute her dogs are, we get it.
And thirdly, I just found the story too short. Add in more detail about the mystery. Lengthen the time between events and add a bit more meat and potatoes (this is entirely just my own opinion).
All in all I would love to read the rest of Addie's adventures to solve the mystery which this novel started. I feel like I have only read half of the story.
I want to thank NetGalley and the Publisher Laurie White / Carolina Blue Publishing for an e-copy of "Death Comes in Threes" to read and review.
A good start, and has me looking forward to more. Well written with wonderful and fun characters. Hard to put down and kept my interest. Hope the author keeps up the fantastic writing.
A fun and quick cozy mystery. A great start and can see this developing into a highly exciting series. Addie is being attacked from different angles and different men. Good thing there is a hunky detective there to help her out. Hard to put this one down, and look forward to the next in the series. Keep them coming! Highly recommend.
