An ok read.
I liked the storyline but the book had no suspense in it. It was just so predictable.
It could have been written better and had some suspense and mystery in it
A real page turner, would be good for the beach! Domestic thriller with a fun book within a book piece. Interesting characters with lots of secrets. You'll stay up late reading this one!, looking over your shoulder the whole time!
This book is a slow thriller but it was able to hold my attention well. I enjoyed how the ending played out but found some parts of the story to be a bit predictable and some that were really not too relevant to the storyline/plot. Overall a good read that had me hooked in the final chapters.
The cover of this book is ominous and sets a perfect tone for what is to come in this novel.
Anna is a second time mom who gave up her career to take care of her children. Feeling that she is being left behind by the book publishing industry that she works for, she convinces her husband to hire a nanny. Having come highly recommended, Anna starts to question if the woman in their house isn't who she appears to be when strange things start to happen to the children.
The premise of this book is terrifying and I felt like it could have been a real study of post-partum paranoia and its relationship to the caretaker industry, but the novel bites off way more than I expected. I admired its ambition at times, but there are quite a few plot lines set up that don't get fully fleshed out and characters that are given point of view chapters that don't feel necessary.
Overall, I feel mixed about this novel. There were parts that I really enjoyed, like the building paranoia and how it started to affect her relationship to her husband. But, the tone was completely uneven and even some characters seemed to take tonal shifts that were unexpected made me feel displaced in this world. I wanted to love it, but it was only a like.
Thank you Netgalley for the chance to read this novel in return for a fair review.
The most disturbingly real portrayal of someone pretending to be someone else I have ever read- Oaklynn is not Oaklynn at all, yet Nadine manages to convince everyone, including herself, that she is Oaklynn perfect, if a little old fashioned and reserved, nanny to Anna and Josh's children. However she is also pretty sinister to the reader and Anna certainly quickly develops reservations.
I found myself siding with Anna, know as I did that Oaklynn was already living a lie and felt her every anxious moment as her children fall for Oaklynn, fall ill and Anna falls apart.
A thoroughly chilling portrayal of trusiting a stranger to enter your home, your family and your life only to live with the consequences.
I love thrillers, and this was a great read. It was a captivating story, holding my attention from the start. It was a bit predictable at times, but that did not take any from the engaging story or the well-developed characters.
I couldn't put this book down! It is one of those books that you can't stop thinking about and just want to get back to it when you rant reading.
The connections between the characters and the way the story developed is so clever.
If you like mysteries with family drama, this is the book for you.
Hell is empty and all the devils are here.
This book is one that will stick with you. It makes you think twice about inviting a stranger into your home and allowing them to care for your children.
I really enjoyed this story. Anna is a stay at home mum who decides to go back to work. As a literary agent she’s able to work from home, but decides they need to employ a full time live in nanny to help around the house. At first Oaklynn Durst seems like the perfect nanny and an amazing house guest. But soon things start to go wrong and quickly Anna becomes suspicious of her motives.
This book is a slow slow burn. For a while it seems like not much will happen. But boy when things kick off, it really kicks off! If you’re looking for a twisty shock ending then this book isn’t for you. Instead this book builds and builds to its inevitable conclusion. It’s fantastically well written and I really enjoyed reading this book, getting more and more tense with each turned page!
I received an ARC from Netgalley is exchange for an honest review and all opinions expressed are my own.
This was exciting and suspenseful. I did guess some of the twists, but the author was still able to surprise me! I liked the direction the novel took and it was a good ride!
Thank you to NetGalley for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Love a good thriller? Then read the Woman in our house. I loved the different characters and their different point of views.
Great twist and a great ending. Would recommend this book.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this book.
This book likes to throw curve balls at you!! I saw some of them, but definitely did not see most! Suspenseful, , twisty and sometimes intense. Good plot, not always believable, but enjoyable. 3.5 stars!
I love domestic thrillers so The Woman in Our House was right up my alley! I loved the various characters, and thought that, for the most part, the characters and that their reactions and relationships to and with one another were quite realistic. The ending had me on the edge of my seat and I found myself racing through it. However, I thought that the “addition” at the end (no spoilers!) was unnecessary and took away from the story due to it completely coming out of left field. The ending was disturbing enough without the additional information. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the story and will certainly look for more books by Andrew Hart. I recommend The Woman in Our House for fans of fast-paced, character-driven thrillers.
Loved this one! Read it in a few hours and was happily surprised by some of the twists. I also liked that the author tackled the current I political issues we have in this country regarding racism. This is a must read for sure.
Special thanks to Netgalley and Lake Union Publishing for this fantastic ARC of The Woman in Our House by Andrew Hart. I don’t know how Mr. Hart’s novels escaped my radar before but they won’t now. This was a novel filled with such taut suspense and excellent pacing that it very happily kept me turning pages well into the night. When literary agent, wife and new Mom Anna decides she needs to get her creative juices flowing again she makes the hard decision every new Mom makes about picking their careers back up. Hart captures her angst and indecision of whether she can return to the workforce, what that means for the family and the guilt of leaving her young children. The perfect solution seems to be working from home, staying connected to head office and hiring a live in nanny. Salvation comes from one extremely capable and well liked woman Ashlynn. Her references are impeccable, she’s terrific with young children and more importantly, the children love her. What could go wrong? It is here that Hart begins the real and raw tale of suspense, foreboding and good god what the heck is happening? Sorry fellas but it’s not often that male authors capture the dynamics and thoughts of a women but Hart captures the female perspective perfectly. As we race to a thrilling finish I found myself rooting for both strong female leads. This novel really stayed with me and I expect it will for a long time to come. Anyone who is a fan of psychological suspense will enjoy this triumph of a book!
The woman in our House by Andrew Hart
Read before release for Netgalley
I requested this book from Netgalley as I liked the slightly spooky book cover and I seem to be into thrillers at the moment!
It begins with a husband and wife blessed by two daughters. Anna, the wife, wants part of herself back, in the sense of working. She loves her children but when she is told about qualified nannies and how great a part of support system they can be, she’s pretty much sold on the idea. There is naturally some guilt but it becomes outweighed by the feeling of being herself again, beta reading and almost immediately finds something that intrigues her!
The fun begins almost immediately by the introduction of someone deciding to replicate someone else. Why though? To what end?
Truth and lies become twisted and I couldn’t see the twists coming at all.
Very clever.
Throughout the book you learn from different points of view and why behaviours change others opinions. I loved how situations in the book made me think differently, time and time again! I was enthralled!
The characters were real characters, witty, cruel and that one friend everyone has.
If you enjoy twisty tales with a dark side this is the book for you. I really liked it.
Great twisty plot. Writing style kept this book moving and interesting.
Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read.
This just felt too much like something I've read before and the quality of the writing wasn't there for me--too many things that didn't make sense and too many characters. I don't know why some writers think they need to throw a bunch of useless characters into the narration when it doesn't add anything and mostly creates confusion. Sorry, not a fan of this one.
I felt that the book started out strong, especially with revealing a twist so early. I liked the different perspectives that gave insight into the characters and their side of the story. However, the story quickly got derailed with too many subplots. The story became less focused, which made me start to lose some interest. And that ending? I'm not sure what the author was thinking but his social commentary along with completely implausible chain of events were somewhat of a mess. The story would have been just as thrilling without the extraneous subplots and the completely unnecessary white supremacist/racial angle.
The Woman in Our House could have been a 4-star rating as I liked the concept of the nanny stolen identity. Unfortunately, it dropped down to a 2.5 rating (rounded up to 3). The author tried to fit too many implausible ideas into one story and it just didn't work for me.
I enjoyed this one... there were a couple times I thought of putting it down but once I got to the half way mark I enjoyed it more and it started to move more quickly. Great ending...

Great plot twist in this mystery novel. I did not see it coming. Very good book.
