3-4 stars, if you enjoy the more sinister (not very fast paced) thrillers, you’ll enjoy this book. While I find it to have many twists & turns, thrills, chills, and some disturbing themes, I didn’t plow through it like I do some. I felt it was a bit slow paced and not as shocking as the thrillers I absolutely love. A decent read that will keep you interested enough to finish, but likely not blow your mind!
I will let Chapter Chatter Pub know about it!
Matthew Farrell has written a scary, psychological thriller with I Know Everything. Worth the read!!
A very complex and sinister read, if you like mysteries then this one is for you. Kept me up most of the night as could not put this down
Even though I Know Everything is a standard set up for a thriller, it kept me guessing hard enough to stay awake until 2am reading. It's been a very long time since I managed this so you know I was super invested.
Farrell led me through a vast range of reactions to the main character Randall. My opinions of him constantly changed throughout the twists and turns of his arc. With so many questions surrounding him I was always on the backfoot, flipping pages as fast as I could.
Who is Sam? What happened to Randall's brother? Who killed his wife? What are his truths?
As I've mentioned previously, I like trying to guess the end of thrillers such as these. It's a fine line to tread, making sure the story ties together well with enough bread crumbs to lead the reader to a satisfying conclusion. But I also want to be shocked and surprised! The face palm 'why didn't I see that coming?' moment is my favourite. I want to be outsmarted but I need to be able to follow the trail well enough to hypothesise along the way.
I Know Everything hit this mark perfectly.
I had to know who did it, how they did it and why they did it. I had to KNOW EVERYTHING.
Farrell fed me just enough information to keep me hungry without temptation to seek sustenance elsewhere! Amidst the red herrings the revelations come to light slowly to piece this intriguing puzzle together.
While the concept has been done many times before it didnt detract from my reading experience. I was still chasing the killer right alongside Susan, mentally scouring the evidence in my need to beat her to the punch.
I think the ending could be a love or hate deal for some, for me it was love!
This book didn’t capture my attention right away like the author’s last book, but I did end up invested in the characters and the story.
There were several twists and red herrings introduced that will probably work for many readers. Unfortunately, none of them were a big surprise for me, which made the book too predictable for my liking. Despite that, the author’s writing style was solid enough for me to derive some enjoyment from reading the story, and I’d definitely be willing to give his next book a try.
Without giving too much away, there’s a psychological term that’s brought up in the book that is often mischaracterized. There’s even a lot of debate about the true meaning of the term within the professional world of psychology, with some theorizing that the version the author presents may not actually exist. Knowing that put a damper on the story for me. I’m willing and able to suspend disbelief for fiction, but it’s more difficult in cases like this where fictional aspects are modeled on things from the real world.
If you’re willing to look past things like what I mentioned above, this will probably be a much better reading experience for you. I think it would also be enjoyed much more by readers who haven’t read several other thrillers that contained some similar themes.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing an ARC. This review contains my honest, unbiased opinion.
Psychologist Randall Brock has a pretty nice life with his wife Amanda who is beautiful and wealthy. He and his partner Peter Reems work with very disturbed individuals to help them overcome their dark fantasies. It's a nice, fulfilling life and things are going well.
Then one night Peter's wife is involved in a fatal accident. Inspector Susan Adler of the New York state police and her new partner, Tommy Corrola get the case and quickly rule out accident and realize that this was a murder. They quickly focus the investigation on Randall who is shocked and hurting from the loss of Amanda.
Enter Sam. Sam tells Randall that he knows Amanda's secrets and will share them with Randall and give Randall the proof to prove his innocence. But, before Sam will give him the proof, he wants Randall to confess his secrets. Then begins a wild ride, with a shocking twist at the end that I did not see coming.
If you like dark psychological thrillers definitely read this book!
This book just wasn't for me and it really took me a while to get into but I appreciate netgalley for allowing me to read this in advance!
“I Know Everything” is a page-turner and breathtaking novel.
We follow Susan Adler, a brilliant Police Investigator, who is investigating a deadly car accident. Medical exams led to evidence that the victim was murdered and the crime was disguised in car accident. The victim was the wealthy wife of Randall Brock, a psychiatrist who studies and treats patients with antisocial behaviour. Actually Randall Brock has himself a psychiatric story…..
The plot is well developed and the characters are well designed. “I Know Everything” is a fast-pacing book, full of suspense and action. It is all the time surprising and you can't guess what happens next, from the beginning to the end. When you think you know then twists happen.
I give it 4* (even though it deserves 5*) because, in my point of view, sometimes there were lots of blood and murders in parts of the book.
I recommend this book to those who are looking for dark and twisted thrillers.
Yowzers!
Like feeling the sharp sting of a taut rubber band aimed at your sensitive skin.......again and again and again.
Ya know that Matthew Farrell doesn't believe in carousel rides. I Know Everything will be heavy on the psychosis sauce. But who exactly is serving it up and who exactly is partaking with spoon at the ready?
Dr. Randall Brock has been partnered with Dr. Peter Reems since their early days at NYU. Both are successful psychologists in the psychiatry department at Quarim University Hospital. They have been working on a 5 year grant involving curing psychopathic behavior with patients talking through violent fantasies. They both believe that they are on the very brink of groundbreaking success.
But a tragic car accident involving Randall's wife, Amanda, will put all of that on hold. Amanda had been the head of a non-profit organization called Glass Hearts. She was being honored for her selfless dedication on the night of the accident. The news of her death nearly destroys Randall.
Within days, Randall is visited by New York State police investigators, Susan Adler and Tommy Corolla. The evidence found at the scene now points to murder. With the tune playing on the jukebox that it's always the husband, Randall feels the heat. He knows that he didn't murder his wife. He was at the university hospital that night. The police don't believe him and the squeeze is on. But Randall is being visited by someone who claims to know Amanda's secrets and just who may have done the dastardly deed.
I Know Everything walks around inside the heads of these characters.......and that's no jaunt in the park. Some of them are truthful and some are not quite what they claim to be. It's not necessary to have read Farrell's first novel. (What Have You Done? from 2018) But there's a clever little connection on the final page of this one. Clever, creative, and seeped in much woowoo, I Know Everything will certainly grab your attention.
I received a copy of this novel through NetGalley for an honest review. My thanks to Thomas & Mercer and to Matthew Farrell for the opportunity.
Wow!!! That’s the only way to describe this book. From the very beginning I was hooked. I thought I had things figured out then something would come along and make me second guess myself. This was the first book I have read of Matthew a Farrell but it definitely won’t be my last!!
I just couldn’t get into this book at all. It seemed to jump around a lot and took an age to get interesting. It does, but, not until the last two thirds of the book and by then I’d lost interest.
I’m grateful to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to preview, but, not for me, I’m afraid.
Dr. Randall Brock, a psychiatrist, lives the perfect life with his wealthy wife, Amanda. Randall works at a university with his best friend/partner Peter researching patients with violent fantasies/tendencies in attempt to "cure" the patient's from acting out on them. .
One night, Randall and Amanda attend an award ceremony and Randall leaves early feeling ill. She is killed in a car accident when her car veered off the road and over a cliff.
Susan Adler is a private investigator assigned to the case. She is prepared to close the case as a tragic accident when she gets the autopsy results that point to homicide. Naturally her first suspect is the spouse, Randall. Randall, however, knows he is innocent and is desperate to find out what really happened to his wife. Then a stranger appears offering Randall info about Amanda, but at a price. Randall must reveal long hidden secrets to find out the truth.
This was a great book! I liked both Randall and Susan and was interested in finding out what really happened to Amanda. Just when I thought I had it figured out I found out just how wrong I was.
Thanks to Matthew Farrell, Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for the ARC of this great book!
I know everything starts a bit slow and one really needs to get through the first 10-20% before it gets really twisted and good
I loved this book. When you think you know...you don't. I enjoyed the author's first book, but I didn't know what to expect from this one, and I was very pleasantly surprised. Would definitely recommend.
The title of this book really grabbed me. I was really intrigued by how the title would play out in the story and it didn't disappoint. I'm not going to tell anything of the story, I'm not going to blow it
Author Mathew Farrell just keeps getting better and better. I KNOW EVERYTHING is fast, tense, taut and need I add, very creepy. I read it all in one sitting because nothing else was even half as interesting. I enjoyed his first book, in part, because I was able to guess what was happening and enjoy the procedural at the same time. In this tale, he cleverly made me think I had it figured out and then tricked me a time or two. There are some great reveals in this tale that I have no intention of sharing. The detective portion is a treat and the crimes are as cringe-worthy as possible. It is a memorable story. I’m a fan of the author and can’t wait for his next book. For thriller lovers, this book is a joy to read. I received my copy from the publishers through NetGalley.
I Know Everything by Matthew Farrell was outstanding! Dr. Randall Brock, a psychiatrist, lives the perfect life with his wealthy wife, Amanda, in upstate New York. Randall works at a university with his best friend/partner Peter researching patients and trying to reduce violence in psychopaths.
One night, after Amanda receives an award from her charitable foundation, she is killed in a car wreck. Her car veered off the road and over a cliff. Enter Susan Adler, an investigator with the New York State Police. She is paired with a new transfer, Tommy Corolla, a young cop eager to learn from her. When the autopsy on Amanda is complete it shows she was dead before the car wreck. Who is guilty? Is it Randall? Adler and Corolla seem to think so. However, Randall is grief stricken and seems innocent. Then a stranger appears in his life, threatening to expose his "truth". The stranger "knows everything"! This was such a great read. The chapters alternate between Randall and Susan. You will never guess the ending! Make sure to read this! (4.5 stars). Thanks to the publisher and Net Galley for the ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I Know Everything by Matthew Farrell is a gripping and engrossing tale that will be impossible to put down.
Renowned psychologist, Randall Brock works with patients who have dark and brutal fantasies.
When his wife dies in an accident it seems to be a cut and dried case, but looking under the surface police investigator, Susan Adler realizes that things are not what they seem and this investigation turns out to be one of the most complex and disturbing cases she has handled.
Absorbing and engaging, with so many twists and turns it will leave your head spinning and your blood run cold.
Masterfully written tale with realistic characters and situations very vividly portrayed.
An excellent thrilling read.
Randall is a husband who loses his wife in a tragic accident one evening. What’s ruled an accident is quickly turned to more as it’s discovered that the details don’t add up and the prime suspect is Randall himself. It’s always the husband...or is it?
This book gives you multiple suspects and leaves you guessing constantly. When I thought I had it figured out there was another detail thrown in that led me down another path. The ending caught me off guard and did feel a bit hurried but I thoroughly enjoyed this book and the journey it took me on!
I Know Everything is a dark mystery/thriller, that gets darker and darker the further the police investigation goes. Everyone seems to be hiding something, and the author cleverly reveals hidden facts along the way. It’s a sensational book. Just when I had everything figured out, it took a sudden turn and led me in an entirely different direction. High energy, strong and intriguing characters, extremely clever and highly entertaining and thought provoking plot with just enough suspense to keep me guessing. I loved it! My thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and the author for an advance copy of this book in exchange for a fair and honest review.
