Thank you so much to the publisher for approving me. This was a DNF for me, I suppose since I never got back into it and I’m just updating this to move this off my shelf.
She had a plan for everything. It was all mapped out until her Doctor gave her sped everything up in her quest to become a mother. She found the one man who could give her the child she so desperately wanted. The only problem was he was her life long best friend and the one she desired more than her next breath. Taking the next step would give her what she wanted all along. A family.
DNF
At this time, I am no longer interested in reading this title. Thank you for the opportunity to review this title and I apologize for the inconvenience.
This book just didn't live up to the blurb for me. It was slow moving, and most of this story happens in the main characters heads. If they would have had an actual conversations about things from the start, it would have been a lot more of an enjoyable read. The reader is given backstory on Marcus, and you get a feel for why he has the issues he does. Abby on the other hand, isn't really explained. She has bad anxiety and, I don't have a problem with MC having issues, I have a problem with them refusing to address them. The fact that Abby did EVERYTHING possible to avoid conversations and confrontations made it impossible to understand how she would cope being a mom. Parenthood is one hard situation after another. It made this book too unbelievable to me. This was a first for me from this author, and while I didn't enjoy this one, I would give her another read.
I voluntarily reviewed an advanced readers copy of this book.

This is my first Kelly Rimmer title & I really liked it.
Childhood friends find themselves in a precarious position. If Abby wants a child, she has to get started right now. Her first choice for a father turns her down. Well, his identical twin gets wind of this and says, “Why didn’t you ask me?” Well, she didn’t ask him because she already knew he didn’t want kids. They’ve been friends for so long, she didn’t want to put that on him.
Well, things change. They decide to go for it despite having unrealistic expectations. They try to set up rules, Abby tries to stay in control & we already know, this isn’t going to work the way she wants.
Honestly, Abby drove me nuts. She infuriated me. It’s so obvious that Marcus is INTO her. I wanted to shake her & say wise up, girl!
Overall, this is a 4 star read for me. This is another uplifting and enjoyable romance that made me smile. Read this if you’re in the mood for a fun & sexy friends to lovers romance.
Unexpected was a fun and sweet sorry about love and friendship. This is the second I read by Rimmer and even though I knew it was a completely different story, I do not think I was prepared to find such a different style in the story, of course, but especially in the way that the characters are written.
I really liked Abby, although she was so frustrating sometimes. I loved Marcus, he was so nice (Can I have my own Marcus, please?). I liked that Abby was into gaming and was a very different female character
The secondary characters like Luca, Izzy and Jess were interesting and added to the story. I know that the second book in the series is coming soon and Isabel and Paul’s story intrigues me, so I am definitely going to read that one.
The plot is interesting and while it discusses some serious topics like fertility issues, the author keeps it light enough and it is very enjoyable, easy and fast to read.
It was the perfect read for a Friday night with a glass of wine while you relax from a long week. It was very nice to read this story, it was funny and entertaining and I enjoyed it.
3 awwww stars
An adorable story about a girl who wants a baby and her best friend who wants to help that happen. Abby and Marcus have best friends since childhood. It was a cute and Hallmark type story.
I really enjoyed Rimmer's contemporary novel, Before I Let You Go. I was in the mood for a romance and saw she wrote Unexpected so I eagerly clicked on it. However, it didn't hold to the same level of writing I fell in love with in her previous novel. While the story line, friends-to-lover trope, was used well, I was still underwhlemed and left wanting. I will definitely check out more of her contemporary novels, but may shelf future romances for now.
Thank you to Harlequin Books for my free review copy. This book is one of the best contemporary romances that I have read lately. This is a fun and sexy story about two roommates who decide to have a baby together. Abby and Marcus have known each other all their lives and are best friends and platonic roommates. Abby discovers she has a medical issue and she should start having children sooner than later. She is a goal driven person and she has her whole life mapped out and having children is something she has always planned. When Marcus hears about her plight he steps in to be the father. He wants a baby but not a romantic commitment so he thinks this will be perfect. The relationship between the two of them is fun and cute. Their friends and family round out the cast and they really add to the story. This is the first in a series and I’m looking forward to more of these books. I read this in one sitting I was enjoying this story so much.
A lovely read. Quite enjoyable. The book was well written and the characters well developed. I appreciated the fact that the book dealt with an issue that is not discussed openly.
I wanted to love this one but it didn't completely work for me. I loved some aspects but could not get past others. Friends to lovers is usually a trope that I love - and this one had so much promise. I think my primary issue with the story was the heroine, Abby, who I struggled with. Her inability to face things head on became very difficult for me. I became frustrated with how she couldn't see things that are right in front of her. But, I loved her relationship with Marcus and their history together. This is a fine romance - just not one that blew me away.
Best friends & roommates who try for a baby because heroine believes she may have fertility issues. So my biggest pet peeve was that the entire romantic tension/plot depending on a lack of communication between the characters & Hero was a Manho. Wonderful. Let’s make all Heroes sluts because that’s what we all want them to be... NOT.
I was generously given an ARC of this book by NetGalley and the publisher. The opinions expressed in this review are my own and have not been influenced in any way.
One of my new favorite books! This author has such a way with words the pages flew by in no time! I can’t wait to see the next work by this author! This was such a joy to read!
I recently discovered Kelly Rimmer and went on a binge, reading three of her books in a week span. This is a cute, lighthearted, predictable romance. While not my favorite of hers, I grew to like it more after reading her authors note at the end that detailed why she wrote a predictable, happy book. After a string of heavier topics, this light hearted read was exactly what I needed! It dragged a bit for me in the middle but overall I enjoyed this book and look forward to what she comes at us with next. 4⭐️, rounded up from 3.5. Thanks to the publisher for this advance reader in exchange for my honest review!

A best friend to lovers’ story that will leave you wondering if its always this hard to take a risk in life and hope it will pay off. When Abby receives news that she is at the point in her life that she should have kids now instead of later her whole outlook will change. What she doesn’t realize is that her best friend Marcus is waiting on the sidelines waiting for his chance. He gets his chance when he lets her know he will father her baby. They take a risk with their friendship when they start trying to have the baby the natural way. Feelings get in the way and neither one of them know what to do with these new things happening to them. Abby is a runner and Marcus is the one that will stay and fight. When Abby gets disappointed that things aren’t happening the way she wants and her emotions are blinding her to what is right in front of her. I have to be honest here and say that Marcus is a saint and putting up with Abby is a job in itself. They both don’t deal well with their feelings but Abby is the one that is the stubborn one in their relationship. She is detached with the real world besides the one she lives in with Marcus and their friends. Marcus shows her everyday what it is like to be with each other but she just takes everything to the extreme. I didn’t like her because she was a runner and she doesn’t like to face the hard stuff. She is over dramatic and a coward to where Marcus is brave and compassionate. Marcus is the person that she needs to face and he will fight through and through to make her see. I love the fighter in the story and that is Marcus because he cares about the people he loves and he loves hard. They make one another complete and that gives them the chemistry and love we expect to see in this story. I cannot say I love the story but I liked it for its story line and the main male character. It has a dreamer quality to the story line because we all want to be able to bring life into this world. With Abby her chances are dwindling but she doesn’t give up because her best friend is there for her in this time of need. That is what their story is about and finding the love that was always there to start with.
This was my first time reading a book by this author and I will be reading more. I loved Unexpected.
Abby and Marcus are best friends who live together. They decide to have a baby together after she realizes she has fertility issues. Marcus decides to help her out. These two have the best chemistry but they are too blind to see they are perfect for each other.
Once these two figure out what everyone else knows its perfect. I really enjoyed this book and can’t wait to read more work from this author.
Marcus and Abby have been best friends their entire lives. Abby has fertility issues and she desperately wants to have a baby. She and Marcus are both single and they decide to try to have a child together and raise it together, but think they can do this without becoming romantically entangled. It's very steamy and the chemistry is spot on, but once you start reading, you know exactly what to expect.
This book was cute and I definitely really liked the characters. Best friends turned romance isn't always my favourite, but I'm almost always willing to give it a try. I loved their friendship and the storyline with Marcus and Luca's father. I didn't completely connect with the actual plot as much as I would've liked to - and everything felt a bit too...easily resolved, maybe? I will still continue with the series and this was a cute read that passed the time nicely and left me with a smile on my face.
I am a huge fan of Kelly Rimmer so I was excited to get Unexpected and super excited it is book one in a series!!
Unexpected was super fun and super cute! The storyline and characters were both amazing. I'm super excited for the next book in this series!
This is more than a friends to lovers book. With witty & engaging characters and a unique plot I found this a entertaining read. Abby faced with a life-changing situation reaches out to her best-friend Marcus, this book has drama, tender moments, and plenty of chemistry. I will definitely read more by this author.
