Chadwick takes a more pragmatic approach to history than, say, Philippa Gregory, whose luscious melodramas (historically accurate or not), seem to make the pages fly a little bit faster.
Chadwick competently spins the history around John FitzGilbert--his loves and losses ---and his place in the intrigue of the 12th Century and King Henry I's court.
