Thank you to the publisher for allowing me to read and review this ARC. Full review to be found on Goodreads and on my website.
Overall I wasn't super impressed by this read. The plot felt too unrealistic and characters hard to like and connect with.
this book sucks you into its plot and then throws you all over the place with its storyline
a great book to get through really quickly as it has such a fast paced story really worth the read.
This was a really good read. The family dynamics are dark and ominous, and although the book is a slow burner, it's worth staying with.
This book is about tough decisions or crossroads we sometimes find ourselves in that we weren't expected. Emily and Josephine are sisters and best friends. They've been each other's rock ever since their mother moved away. Emily always felt that something was off when she married Michael. Fast forward to meeting her sister's new boyfriend and her heart goes wild as if this was the feeling she'd be waiting for. Her feelings are reciprocated and she has to decide whether the path of following her heart is worth the pain she will cause her sister by betraying her or if she must ignore her feelings and move on. The book discusses deceit, heartbreak, and death. Tough decisions. Interesting page turner. I would recommend this book.
This wasn't what I thought it was going to be and to be honest, I could not get into this book. It fell flat for me, it's uninteresting, and left me disappointed.
Thank you Netgalley and Agora Books for the advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
Great book, I kept being surprised by some of the twists in the story that I just did not see coming.
Thank you to NetGalley, the publisher and author for providing a free copy of this book
Very blah and not catchy for me. Very sad, a lot of secrets, a lot of hurt, an affair, and a death. I expected way more about the death but that really was only about the last 10 pages and you just wanted to crawl into the book and shake the other characters as they are what lead to it. I didn't connect with any of the characters, they were very flat and one dimensional. Received this book as an ARC and I am freely giving my review.
Dark mystery that sucks you into a different place. A nightmare where no one wants to be. Good read. Can’t put it down. Wondering where it’s going to go And which way to turn
Well-written, complex and thought-provoking, I found this an engaging and thrilling read. It really does stay with you and is impossible to put down - not because of an 'action packed' plot but because of the depth of the emotions explored. It really does suck you in and then slowly unfold over time with the perfect pace and wonderful characterisation.
This is another novel that I got utterly emotionally invested in very quickly. Initially the opening chapter made me think this was going to have thriller elements but it hasn’t really, it’s much more an exploration of the relationship between two sisters and their relationships with their respective partners. The characters in this book aren’t particularly likeable but they are all so real, and I could see bits of me and bits of people I’ve known in them. It’s easy to judge matters of the heart when they don’t affect you but this novel by showing the perspectives of all four characters really does show that nothing is black and white and it’d be so easy for us all to make a decision that has consequences we never could have foreseen. I only read this fairly recently but it’s really lodged itself in my heart, I keep thinking of the characters and wondering what’s happening in their lives since the final page. I definitely recommend this one!
Two and a half star rating.
Two sisters, Emily and Josephine, who are very close, then Emily marries Michael and Josephine meets Jack which is when things turn a bit sour. A speedy read with an unsatisfying ending - expecting a bit more and instead it’s the acknowledgements! Lots of mentions of “steaming” mugs, cups and bowls plus hair colour which was a bit superfluous. It was hard to get a proper grasp on these four - two selfish, two doormat individuals. I veered between two or three stars for this book and so have gone for two and a half. A fairly decent enough domestic drama which was easy to get into.
I really wanted to like this book. It's very well written, well written to a point that I managed to develop a visceral dislike of the main characters and basically didn't care what happened to them. I doubt this is what the wuthor was aiming for.
Two couples, a set of sisters and betrayal. Emily and Josephine share a mother and more than that their mother has abandoned them so they are all each other has left when it comes to family. Emily gets married and they know that will change their relationship, but actually it is Josephine's new love that will really rock their world.
The reader knows from the beginning that there will be a betrayal and that it will really affect this small group. But there is one reveal at the end that I will not spoil that really sent this book down a road I wasn't prepared for. I am still not sure how I feel about it and I finished the book a few days before writing this review - have you read this book? Without spoiling what are your thoughts on this ending?
I accepted this review before I really started avoiding books that had cheating and spouses, so I wanted to keep to my commitment, but also trying to decide if this really is a sub genre that I am going to avoid - answer is yes. I just don't love reading books with this at the heart of it and I am going to avoid these in the future.
Started off slow but definitely picked up and became a complicated storyline I found myself feeling all sorts of mixed emotions towards the characters kept me hooked and wanting to know the outcome!
I really enjoyed “Nobody’s Wife” by Laura Pearson and I found it exceptionally moving.
This book had it all - there was so much love, loss and betrayal and it revealed the darker side of families at their worst. Melancholic and complex, “Nobody’s Wife” was an engrossing and riveting read. It was told via an admirable multi-person narrative which smoothly moved between four protagonists.
The characters were pretty unlikeable but for me, this improved the story. With a fabulous plot and understated, subtle writing “Nobody’s Wife” was a wonderfully fulfilling read.
This book was so good that I will be adding Laura Pearson to my list of newly discovered authors, for sure!
Thanks to NetGalley, Agora Books and the author, Laura Pearson, for my complimentary copy of Nobody’s Wife. My honest review is entirely voluntary.
Slow going, complicated love triangle that ends in a different way than everyone suspected. Slow in the beginning but picks up about halfway. Sisters are somewhat likable characters but I found myself getting annoyed with them! But, in the end it all came together.
I turned every page of this book with a knot in my stomach; it is wonderful. Laura has such a talent for accurately depicting human emotion. Beautifully flawed characters and the worst type of betrayal. I felt like I was being slowly drawn through an emotional mangle and it was a pleasure. Looking forward to her next.
this book was an interesting story about how messy life can be. Neither of the two sisters were particularly likable. So there is an element of not really connecting with the characters. Michael was likable. I do wish she would have delved a little deeper into why the sister were who they were. What had shaped them into the people the have become. It felt a little incomplete to me.
An amazing story that was flawlessly written, but...wow! If I could punch some of these characters in the face I would! Ha, ha! Some people! This book has a lot of surprises! I could not put it down!
