This book is the first book I've read by Jill Shalvis and it was a little steamier than I was expecting. I loved how the sisters were a bit estranged but will always help each other when they are down. This was a fun book to watch an independent aunt figure out how to take care of her three nieces and nephews. Though it is the third book in the series, I understood it just fine without reading the others.
Enjoyed this book about sisters and their relationships. Liked watching them grow together and from each other like sisters do in real life. They're ability to be support even when they might not agree was very real.
Easy read. Great summer beach read. It's easy, fun and has the right amount of romance to keep your romantic heart content. Great addition to the Wildstone series.
I mostly always enjoy a Shalvis romance book and this was no exception. I enjoyed the relationships in this, the kids, and the story. It didn't shy away from some pretty big issues and actually tried to show that talking about them honestly could help work things out. Of course, a lot of it was probably still sort of glossy and easy since it's a romance novel and not real life but, meh. Pretty good beach read.
Wonderful beach read. Put this in your beach bag and enjoy the family drama! You will be carried into the story right away- and it will be over too soon!
Jill Shalvis is an amazing Storyteller! Every single book I read of hers is great! Can't wait for her next book!!
The past that Brooke Lemon ran away from seven years ago comes crashing back into her life when her sister Mindy shows up at her door with her three kids and a total breakdown. Now Brooke has to learn how to reconnect with her sister, face the love of her life she walked away from, and conquer her fears. The story is a good balance between funny and serious. The combined sympathy and exasperation between the sisters is familiar to anyone with sibling of their own, and the will-the-won't-they between Brooke and Garrett leaves you alternating between wanting to hug them both or lock them in a closet together. Brooke is the more believable of the two sisters, as Mindy can come across as rather whiny, but it doesn't detract from the story.
The relationship between the two sisters was wonderful. Even though they hadn't been close in several years, when one sister really needed some help, the other one just jumped in. Watching the two sisters find their way back to each other was very special.
I love Jill Shalvis and really enjoyed this latest book of hers. Brooke has made mistakes in her life and has pushed away her sister and the love of her life. When she has to go back home to help her "perfect" sister Mindy fix her life, it give Brooke the chance to fix her own life too. She has to work on tough things but the benefits can help her open up and bring wonderful things into her life.
This is the story of two sisters who couldn’t be more different: Brooke, the adventurous younger sister who left Wildstone seven years before and has rarely been back and Mindy, the perfect sister who married her high school sweetheart, stayed in her hometown, and is raising 3 beautiful children. It’s clear from the start that these somewhat estranged siblings have no clue about each other’s current life and lob accusations at each other rather than trying to mend their broken relationship.
The problems with this book are myriad, starting with the fact that neither sister is particularly likeable. Brooke is pretty much an ice queen who has deeply buried her past hurts and, with no explanation, has alienated both her family and Garrett, the man who is supposedly the love of her life. Given that they never had a true relationship, the entire second-chance romance premise is implausible, especially given her near-constant self-flagellation and Garrett’s nasty, albeit somewhat justified, behavior towards her. Mindy is a control freak who, despite no evidence to support it, believes her sweet but clueless husband Lincoln is cheating on her. There is quite a bit of fat-shaming with her character which has no place in contemporary fiction. The children are precocious and provide much-needed comic relief, but they are almost feral. The oldest child has OCD like her aunt Brooke, but Mindy never recognized the symptoms in Brooke and downplays her daughter’s. This is surprising given that Linc is a doctor.
Although this is the 3rd book in the series, there is really no connection other than location and a brief, but funny scene at the winery from Book 2, so it can be read as a standalone. The first two were interesting reads with engaging characters, but this one falls flat. Shalvis is wonderful at writing funny, charming, and sexy serial romances (Animal Magnetism, Heartbreaker Bay) with only a couple of new characters introduced in each subsequent book. Unfortunately, she struggles when writing longer “women’s fiction.” She doesn’t use the added pages to develop her characters and the stories tend to drag. Not recommended.
I received a complimentary ARC of this book from HarperCollins Publishers through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
I received a copy of this arc from NetGalley for an honest review. I started this book a few times and just was not interested in it, however, I did order a copy for my branch and it's almost always checked out, so I'm thinking that maybe I missed something.
The Lemon sisters, Mindy and Brooke, are both having personal problems. Mindy is married to Linc, a very busy surgeon who doesn't spend any significant time with either her or their three young kids. Brooke is (I think) a photo editor, used to be one who climbed and flew everywhere until an almost fatal accident has given her some PTSD and has aggravated her OCD tendencies. Mindy shows up on Brooke's doorstep one day, very close to a full nervous breakdown, and implores Brooke to help -- by going back to the home she had run away from 7 years earlier and where her then-boyfriend still lives. Brooke agrees and dives completely into the life of her sister, who has her own problems with being a super-control freak. Somehow she manages and convinces her sister that not everything has to be scheduled and will not fall apart if it isn't done; when Linc returns from his convention she lays into him and makes him realize what he's doing to his family; and she manages to reconnect with her former boyfriend and rediscover her life at the same time.
Interesting book, but I kept on thinking I'd read it somewhere before. Still a good read though.

This is book 3 in the Wildstone series. It's a wonderful story of Brooke who returns to Wildstone to help out her older sister Mindy who thinks her husband is having an affair and whose kids are driving her crazy. Brooke is having her own crisis but returns home to confront her past and set her future in order. Can be read as a stand alone but you'll want to know about the entire family's romances. If you're looking for a great read that is full of love and family interaction, this is a good pick. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Breezy, fun, light and perfect for those who like women's Fiction with a dose of romance. A little different than Shalvis' typical romance but I'll definitely recommend.
I liked this one, the relationships were all layered and interesting. I liked the titular sisters Brooke and Mindy and how their relationship evolved throughout the book.
I hate to detract from all the glowing 4 and 5 star reviews, especially since this is an author I generally enjoy, but this one was just okay for me. Sometimes multiple perspectives work fine, sometimes it just gets muddled and there are too many storylines happening simultaneously, and it's just too much. I didn't think there was enough weight in the Mindy/Luke side of the story for it to take up as much page space as it did, and the Brooke/Garrett storyline by contrast had enough that it could have been explored more. I really disliked the choice to put quotes from the chapter at the beginning of each chapter (quoting oneself seems a little too self-congratulatory on one's own cleverness), and many of these quippy lines are very similar to memes and tweets I've seen previously. It's an enjoyable enough story, but it felt very surface level.
This was a fun summery read, and I enjoyed it greatly!
This was an easy one for anyone with kids and a marriage to relate too, it's hard to keep stay true to yourself and always do the best that you can do every single day. Marriages have ups and downs and seeing the true life story of how marriage works was refreshing, especially since the couple in this story just needed to reconnect (there was no tragedy or drama, just normal everyday life).
I also loved the aspect of this book where a new romance was being formed at the same time as a marriage was being worked on. The characters were easy to relate to and so much fun. I recommend this one!
The Lemon sisters couldn’t be more opposite: Mindy married her high school love, Linc, who’s now a doctor, she has three adorable kids, and she has her shit together. Brooke was an adventurous photographer until a helicopter crash left her with some issues and caused her to distance herself from everything she used to love.
Brooke thinks Mindy’s got it all until she shows up at her apartment in the middle of a mental breakdown. Mindy’s so distraught that Brooke agrees to watch the kids while Mindy gets it together. Brooke takes the kids back to Wildstone, even though she’s been avoiding going home, and avoiding a certain someone, for years. Unfortunately, the man she’s been avoiding, Garrett, lives next door and is impossible to ignore.
Can Brooke mend all of the bridges she burned and finally get some closure?
This book is about loss, redemption, and forgiveness. Overall, this was a fun read, and I would highly recommend it to people who enjoy contemporary romance or are familiar with Shalvis’ work. Although it is part of a series, it can certainly be read as a stand-alone.
Very good read! I always enjoy Jill Shalvis books and this one did not disappoint! The story revolved around two sisters, Brooke and Mindy. Mindy is a stressed out mom of three and in desperate need of a break. Brooke is dealing with her own secrets from the past but steps in to help out her sister while facing some of her own demons. Told from different points of view, this story moved quickly and the dialogue was entertaining and funny. I enjoyed it very much!
Brooke's life isn't going great. Rather than being out in the field, shooting the travel documentaries that she loved, she's behind the scenes as a producer. Her OCD is barely contained and one of the guys she's working with is also someone she's sleeps with occasionally which is usually okay but can also cause some tensions. Next to her perfect sister, she feels like she's a mess.
Mindy's always been the one who got straight As. She married her high school sweetheart and has three beautiful children. She's living the dream. So why is she outside Brooke's door right now? And weeping in Brooke's bed while her children run around?
The sisters will learn that they need to work with each other to resolve the issues in their past that will help free up their future.
There is a trend right now for romance authors to work more in the Women's Fiction genre and that's what this book felt like to me -- more about the bond between sisters than any romance. And that made it kind of flat for me because I didn't really relate to either Brooke or Mindy. It's Shalvis, so I liked it but her strengths are usually her characters and they just weren't there.
Two and a half stars
