Wow, wow, wow!! I tend to gravitate towards psychological thrillers - this one stood out from the rest with an unusual plot! I finished the book in a couple of days and now I need to read the rest Ms.. Denzil's books.
This books follows a mother's journey as she mourns the lost of her daughter who the police say committed suicide. Kat does not believe that her daughter would take her own life and vows to uncover the truth regarding Grace's death.. The story was full of twists and turns and the ending was fantastic!
Thank you to Sarah A. Denzil, Bookouture and NetGalley for the ARC of this great book!
Only Daughter starts with a prologue that immediately hooks the reader. Grace alone and dying desperately wanting to survive. Kat her mother has been told she's a sociopath her entire life but she loved Grace. When Grace is found police classify it a suicide but Kat knows her daughter was happy and wouldn't kill herself. Or was she? How well do you actually know another person? The novel for me dragged a bit and felt repetitive at times. Once details starting to be revealed though I couldn't put the book down. Definitely has twists and turns and secrets the reader won't see coming. Overall I enjoyed this novel. I continue to enjoy the authors work and would recommend it. Thank you Netgalley for the ARC
This was a story that I was curious and drawn into from the first chapter. Grace, the girl that had everything including secrets and the truth that comes to light within the pages of this story. Charles and Katie learn bit by bit the truth about the last words of their daughter and the truth of why. Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this book.
Brilliantly addictive, I have read most of Sarah's books and I can recommend them all. This is a well developed story and very cleverly written with a fantastic ending.
It is a good paced psychological thriller with excellent characters who I soon got involved with and I cannot recommend this book highly enough, an excellent five stars.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for giving me the opportunity to read this book.
Only Daughter by Sarah A. Denzil is a fast-paced psychological thriller that will pull you in immediately and will not let go. Full of twists and turns, and voiced by a narrator whose reliability is constantly in question, this is one fun ride.
Seventeen year old Grace Cavanaugh's body has been discovered at the bottom of a quarry, the result of an apparent suicide. For the police, it is case closed, but Grace's mother Kat knows that this is murder, and she will stop at nothing to prove it.
Kat is a complex narrator, having been diagnosed with antisocial personality disorder during her troubled and violent teenage years. Her relationship with her own mother is a toxic one, and her turbulent past is alluded to, yet never fully revealed as the novel progresses. Kat will do anything to uncover her daughter's killer and, as she herself states, her potential suspects have no idea who they are dealing with.
This was a taut and gripping thriller that I could not put down until the mysterious death of Grace Cavanaugh was solved. The twists continue right through until the chilling end. I very much look forward to reading more from this exciting author.
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture for another wonderful ARC.
When you are a sociopath and have been told that you can't feel love like other people do what do you do with all of your feelings when your daughter commits suicide?
Kat Kavanaugh simply cannot believe that her daughter would kill herself. As she begins to delve into Grace's suicide she realizes that her daughter had a lot of secrets and she may not have known her at all. And Grace isn't the only one...
Compulsively readable!
Thank you to Sarah A. Denzil, Bookouture, and Netgalley for giving me this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Had to stay up past my bedtime to finish this. Absolutely gripping. I loved the blurring of the lines of whether or not Kat is a sociopath or a grieving mother. I think its really interesting how Kat's whole mind has been manipulated by her time in therapy. Another wow book from Sarah Denzil. Brava!
I seem to be reading a few books about dead teenagers at the moment-it’s certainly not been my intention but it just seems to have fallen that way! I have read (and loved!) this author’s other books and so was desperate to read her latest book no matter what it was about! Sarah A Denzil wrote one of my favourite books of 2017, Silent Child, so I’ve been looking forward to this book ever since then! And it was completely worth every month of the wait!
The first few pages really throw the reader into a nightmarish scenario where a young girl is desperately trying to climb her way out of a quarry that’s a well known local suicide spot. And she seems to be winning until we later find out that Grace has been found dead. Her mother Kat is devastated as she thought she knew her daughter and that suicide was the furthest thing from her mind. But the note produced by the police seems genuine so it’s left to Kat to try to prove that she knows her daughter better than anyone else and that this was no suicide.
I really loved this book. It gripped me from the first few pages and didn’t let go once. Kat was a complex character, perfectly brought to life as her background and relationships were slowly unraveled. As she becomes more determined to prove that her daughter was murdered, I was mentally cheering her on to find out the truth about what Grace was hiding and why. Their mother/daughter relationship was a complex one, defined by Kat’s past, and I was incredibly moved by the feelings of maternal guilt that Kat had to go through and that many of us will recognise.
There were plenty of twists to keep you on your toes throughout Only Daughter and a few shocks as well. I will freely admit to having no idea what had happened to Grace or why, so I loved it when the big reveal brought everything together. This is a book that will grab you by the throat and squeeze slowly until you are begging to be put out of your misery and find out who was involved but more importantly why. And I loved the ending which was just perfect for me. This really is a book that deserves your complete attention especially if you’ve never read a book by Sarah A Denzil before. I can guarantee that the minute you finish it you will be searching out her previous books.
Highly recommended by me.
This is a story of a mother’s worst nightmare. She has been accused of being unable to love but she has a deep love for her daughter. She’s committed suicide but what happened to her? Did she really, was she really depressed, was it a setup? Strong and emotional read that has a surprise ending.
I really liked this book it was a bit slow and long winded at times but it still kept my interest. Did Grace commit suicide or is something much more sinister going on? Every time I think I had this book figured out the author threw in another twist. The ending was very surprising. I would recommend this book it kept me captivated!
I loved this book! Let's be honest, psychological thrillers can get a bit predictable when you've read as many as I have. THIS WAS NOT THAT BOOK. I loved the unusual plot and finished the book in a day! Now I need to go and read the rest of Sarah's books.
Only Daughter follows a mother's journey as she mourns the lost of her daughter. I don't want to say too much because there are a lot of twists and turns to this story. I will say you will be gripped with the first few pages and you can forget about your to-do list until you finish. Nothing will get done! Enjoy the ride!
First, I want to thank Sarah A. Denzil, Bookouture, and NetGalley for providing me with this book so I may bring you with this review.
Only Daughter by Sarah A. Denzil is an extremely gripping and emotional Psychological thriller with a jaw-dropping twist. Words can’t describe what an incredible Psychological Thriller writer Sarah A. Denzil is. Her prologue alone blew me away with Grace’s extreme details and descriptions of how she is laying there in the middle of nowhere left for dead and dying! Not to mention the remorse of how everything she felt was wrong. It was the best prologue I had ever read before in this genre! After reading that prologue, I needed to know what happened to Grace and I would not put my book down til I found out what happened to her.
Kudos to the cover graphic artist who did the cover for this book. I thought it was beautiful and really liked the heart charm necklace and the blue backdrop. However, there was no significance to the heart necklace mentioned in the story to tie in with the cover. I would have liked to seen that pay a part of it.
This book does cover some difficult subjects that may be triggers for some readers. Those topics include: Suicide, cyber bullying, drug abuse, inappropriate teacher/student relationship, teenage pregnancy, infidelity, etc.
This is one book that must be made into a NetFlix original!! It has so many great aspects to be a big smash hit on so many levels!
Kat Kavanaugh and her husband are informed that their daughter Grace has committed suicide from jumping off a cliff. They are devastated but you, the reader, already know that Grace did not mean to kill herself so what happened? Kat is determined to prove that Grace did not kill herself but when a suicide note, written in Graces hand, turns up no one wants to believe her. Kat is not just simply a mother she reacts differently and is this somehow linked to her own troubled past.
I was gripped from page one and every time I thought I had come to a conclusion it was disproved with the next chapter. I will be looking for books by Sarah A. Denzil in the future. Highly recommend!
Thanks to Bookouture and NetGalley for an ARC

wow, what a standout psychological thriller. This one had me turning pages on my kindle at the speed of light because I needed to know more. Very dark, very intense and very addicting. The writing was awesome and now I want to read more of Sarah's books. Everyone always promises a twist but Ms Sarah DELIVERED the twists!
Bookouture - you did again with another winner of a book.
I also love the cover. Beautifully haunting.
Thank you #NetGalley, the author and #Bookouture for my free ARC in exchange for my honest review. FIVE stars across the board from cover to ending!
This was my first book by Sarah Denzil. I will definitely look for more. The story's prologue introduces Grace at the end of her life. We know there is more than meets the eye, but the author does a great job of keeping us guessing until the end. Kat is a very unique character. I appreciated her strength. She isn't the most likeable character, but she seemed very real to me. Her journey to learn what happened to her daughter let her learn more about her. In some ways, it was more than most parents know about their children. The book was full of twists as Kat learned more. From the beginning, I wanted to know more. I enjoyed the story and would highly recommend. I received an advance copy through NetGalley for an honest review.
Loved it loved it loved it!
What a refreshing change from the usual “thriller with a twist you won’t see coming” it actually did have a twist, I didn’t see coming - but also was well written, heartbreaking at times and had some really shocking moments.
When Kats daughter Grace is found dead in a quarry, police are quick to assume suicide. There is a note, so it must be suicide - right?? Kat doesn’t think so and starts tirelessly trying to uncover what happened, even if it means discovering Grace was not the girl she thought she was! Absolute cracking read - I am sad I have finished it!
This was a very dark read, powerful, and compelling. When the Cavanaugh’s daughter is found dead and the police call it a suicide, Kat, the mother, is determined to prove them wrong. This one is twisty and some scenes take your breath away. I appreciate the publisher and NetGalley allowing me to be an early reader in exchange for my review.
‘Your daughter is dead.’ When Kat Cavanaugh hears the words every mother dreads, her perfect world shatters. It can’t be real. And then the police add the word ‘suicide’. But Kat refuses to believe them.
Even when they show her the familiar looping handwriting and smudged ink on the note her little girl left behind. She knows her bubbly, vivacious daughter would never take her own life. Kat’s determined to find out what really happened to Grace on the night she died, whatever it takes…
The second I read the description of this book, I knew this would be one that I really wanted to read. It's a fast paced read and the whole time I kept thinking how much of a nightmare this would be for any mother! I read the author's other book, Silent Child, and loved that one so I knew I'd love this one too.
Thank you #NetGalley for the ARC of #OnlyDaughter

Kat has been repeatedly told that she is a sociopath and incapable of love. She, however, knows beyond a doubt that she loves her only daughter with a passion, regardless of whether that love is natural or has been learned. When she told that her daughter, Grace, is dead Kat refuses to believe the news. When she is told that Grace committed suicide, Kat vows to find her killer!
WOW! Only Daughter is one heck of a roller coaster ride. From beginning to end, I had absolutely no clue who to suspect or how this book would end and that made for one very thrilling read!
Kat has a very dark history: an abusive mother, a very traumatic event that changed her teenage years and ultimately her life, an "accidental" pregnancy in order to snag a wealthy husband. You name it, and Kat has experienced it. The one constant in her life, the one person for whom she would move heaven and earth, is her daughter. Kat even sees a therapist in order to "obtain human emotions" so that she can be a better mother to Grace. So when she learns of Grace's death, she knows in her mother's heart that Grace did not commit suicide. However, the more Kat learns about Grace, the more she wishes she had learned nothing at all. Was Grace the child she knew and loved or the monster that her friends are making her appear to be.
Only Daughter is the story of every mother's nightmare and as readers we live that nightmare through Kat - every emotion, every pain and each and every discovery she makes until the very climactic conclusion. This is a gripping, suspenseful tale full of intriguing twists that will grab you and not let go even after you have finished the book! The writing is tight, the characters are very well developed, from the snotty teens to obnoxious wealthy parents, every character is well drawn. I absolutely loved it and if you like thrillers, I think you will too!
Thank you to #Netgalley, @Bookouture and #SarahADenzil for my advance copy of #Only Daughter which will be available on March 13, 2019.
I enjoyed Only Daughter, i couldn't say i loved it but it was an enjoyable read. I felt it dragged a little in the middle but picked up pace again towards the end.
