Wow! Kept me gripped from start to end, was the first book I have read by Lisa and it surely won't be the last. Highly recommended if you love books that keep you on the edge of your seat

Pretty disturbing and some parts are hard to get through. Story is obviously very well researched but I felt at times reality was stretched a bit. This wasn’t for me, maybe just a bit darker than what I was in the mood for, I do appreciate the arc and would like to thank the publisher and netgalley for it in exchange for an honest review.

I loved the concept of this, but there should be a warning for those of us who cannot stand animal abuse. I almost gave it up because that is a deciding factor in whether or not I read a book. In fact, I had a really hard even getting through it at first. The abuse was never direct but it was implied and brought up often and there was the mention of the animals writhing in pain while their blood was drained. I understand why it was needed, to give more credit to Amit's studies, but still, I could have done without it. Had it been more pronounced, I would not have been able to finish this book, which would have been a shame because it was amazing.

Aside from the animal abuse, the only other thing that bothered me was the conversations. They almost all seemed so forced and unnatural. Especially those between Ben and Em. I felt like they were used to get a point across but not with ease. That did throw me off from the story multiple times. Though they seemed more natural between Alisha and Em.

But, what kept me going was the premise of this story. I loved the idea of a madman wanting to play God and preserve life by taking it and bringing it back. The whole concept, minus the pets being used, was fascinating. It never occurred to me that something like this was really possible, but now I believe it is.

I loved the horror of it. The thrill of Amit abusing his power and being such an evil, callous person, while all in the name or advancing science and using his intelligence to better help the general population was fascinating. This is the kind of plot that will keep you thinking for a long time and surely, come back into memory every time you hear of a medical advance in preserving life!

This was well done and kept my attention throughout. I was seriously beginning to loose hope by the end. There wasn't much left to the book, but the hope I was holding out for was quickly ending! However, it did all end good in my eyes. Except for those last few lines. What?!?!?!?

Ugh.

I'm going to need someone to talk to about this and discuss this ending with. Why? Just why? Didn't she go through enough already? My mind is blown. Unless, it was all for Eva because it was always all for Eva. In that sense, I guess it makes sense. But still, Alisha, why?

Good job. I did truly like this one.

The Doctor by Lisa Stone is an ominous psychological/domestic thriller with a sinister doctor villain. Medical factors well researched and incorporated into the plot seamlessly. Very fast paced and entertaining if chilling read. Ending was unexpected and thought provoking.

I decided to read “The Doctor” by Lisa Stone because cryonics sort of fascinates me even if I do find the whole idea a bit creepy. The neighbors on one side are a young outgoing couple, Emily and Ben. Emily is on extended maternity leave with their young son, Robbie. She would love to get to know her neighbors next door but the house has film on the windows, a state of the art CCTV system and all the blinds are usually drawn. Dr. Amit Burman lives there with his wife, Alisha, and they do not socialize with their neighbors at all. And to add to the mystery, Dr. Burman is a spooky character who spends most of his evenings in the shed at the bottom of his yard. However, nosy little Emily is on a mission to get to know Alisha. And she does...much to her misfortune and her
family’s distress.
This is not a bad mystery thriller although it’s a bit repetitious and at times does ask you to stretch your imagination.

This book is so creepy! Even though some elements seem a little far fetched, the actual premise of the book is very likely to be an option in the future. The characters are well developed and the story flows well.

Another one I couldn’t put down till I’d finished. Creepy in places and heartbreakingly sad in others. The characters on the whole were likeable and while Dr Burman wasn’t likeable his determination was relentless and came across clearly. The anticipation in places had me shouting out loud at the characters.

However, I didn’t like the end. It was so far from the rest of the book. It felt like the author had ran out of time or somebody else had taken over the writing for the end. Something about the way it ended didn’t fit right for me. I’ve read the ending again but it still doesn’t work. For that reason I’ve dropped a star and can only give four stars.

This was a good thriller. Its great that it had a totally different storyline to what we are used to in thrillers. I was actually worried I wouldn't like it and thought it would be too scientific. There was plenty of twists , suprises that have you wanting more.

4-5 stars! Such a thrilling, chilling, and shocking read! So fast paced, original, which made it nearly impossible to put down! I highly recommend to those who are looking for a original psychological thriller!

A cracking thriller with an unusual storyline, this was a great read. One of the best books I've read by the author.

really enjoyed this book. great story line and great characters. look forward to reading more from this author.

Summary:
Emily and Ben live next door to the Burmans. Emily sometimes sees Dr Burman from her bedroom window working in his garage. She feels queasy every time she sees him from that window. Something about him is not right. 
Dr Amit Burman is an anaesthesiologist and researching into cryogenic freezing of humans suffering from a terminal disease. Alisha Burman presumed to be suffering from a form of terminal genetic disease. Dr Burman’s motivation comes from his wife’s illness.
Emily cannot shake this feeling about Dr Burman. And soon her curiosity pulls her in the entangled web of lies, deceit, and evil intentions. 
Will Ben be able to pull her out of the web in time or will she run out of time?

My take on the book:

The reason I picked up the book for its summary. I expected a lot from the summary. After reading it went spiralling down. 

The story had a lot of potential especially theme being cryogenics. But I guess the plot got lost somewhere. There was no mystery, it was all very clear from the beginning. I was reading thinking there might be more to the story, some mystery hidden around the corner. 
 
The characters were flawed. I didn’t care about them, none of them. As a reader, I had no sympathy for Alisha (being a patient of a terminal disease). Even there’s no disliking for the villain, I just didn’t care about them. This took out all fun of reading the book. 

The pace is ok in the beginning, however, somewhere in between it started to drag (one can skip a few pages and will miss nothing important). That brings me to the ending which was abrupt. I never read a book that had this sudden ending. 

The concept was brilliant. But somehow the whole book just fell apart from the storytelling and the characterisation perspective. It had very good potential. 

My ratings for the book 2.5 stars.

You see what people want you to see is the phrase that comes to mind after reading The Doctor. This is one of those books where in the same sentence you're rolling your eyes at how unrealistic the plot is and then biting your nails in anticipation of what happens next. When a couple moves in next-door to a doctor and his wife they don't get the welcome they expected. Even after several failed attempts to befriend her neighbors Emily keeps finding new ways to reach out the couple next door. It all seems to go nowhere until suddenly Emily goes missing. Well, not missing exactly. While alone in the house one night while her husband worked late and after Emily had put her son to bed Emily seemingly decided to leave her husband for another man. Or so her note says. Her jilted husband can't accept the truth of the letter and believes something more sinister is going on. It's a battle between his parents and hers as well as his gut and the thoughts of the police that leave him going back and forth. Where has Emily, a loving wife and mother, really gone? This is a twisted story that will leave you a little more suspicious of your neighbors and what they're really up to behind closed doors.

A very good read and one I can highly recommend to others.
I could not put this down.
Thoroughly enjoyable with an amazing cast of characters that you cannot help but engage with.

You never know what goes on behind closed doors. I found some aspects of this story difficult to take but strange things really do happen in real life. So, I put those qualms on one side and quite enjoyed it, although "enjoyed" is not really the right word.
This book had been recommended by someone I met who had read all the Cathy Glass books and I would imagine this would lend itself to such readers

Emily is a stay at home mum who becomes intrigued by the somewhat reclusive doctor Amit and his wife next door.
It's quite clear that all is not as it seems in the Burman household. He is quite obsessed with his interest in cryogenic research, freezing humans until a cure can be found for their illnesses.
Emily slowly gets to know Alisha and is shocked that her husband doesn’t let her out of the house. Telling her it’s for her own good doesn’t sit right with Emily. I didn't see the twist coming at the end but some people will just stop at nothing.

Having read Lisa Stone’s “ The Stalker” and loved it I was so excited to start this book.

Emily, Ben and their son Robbie move into a new house. Their neighbours seem a little odd, Dr Birman looks after his sick wife Alisha who never leaves the house and at night he is always at the bottom of the garden in his workshop.

Dr Birman is obsessed with cryogenic research, freezing a body until a cure can be found for them. His workshop is his own theatre all ready for him. He may be an anaesthetist at the hospital but at home he is more like Dr Frankenstein!!

Emily tries to make friends with Alisha and slowly they become closer keeping it secret from the creepy Dr who has cameras everywhere. The Dr is not a fan of Emily and he wants to keep her away from his fragile wife.

When Emily goes missing, is it because she has ran off with another man? Or is it something more sinister involving Dr creepy (that’s my nickname for him)

I really enjoyed this chilling thriller. It is refreshing when you read so many psychological thrillers to stumble upon a storyline that is different!!

I was totally hooked throughout this book, there are plenty of twists and surprises that will keep you turning the pages.

This is a domestic thriller with a rather creepy twist. The plot revolves around Emily who is at home on maternity leave. When she tries to make friends with the neighbours, she finds the husband (a doctor) rude and the wife timid and afraid. Meanwhile we learn that the doctor is obsessed with the idea of freezing bodies and then bringing them back to life once a cure for whatever ailed them has been found. It was a fun read.

Emily & Ben are happily married. Together with their young son are quite new to the neighbourhood & as Emily is still on maternity leave she is quite keen to make friends with the neighbours. However the doctor who lives next door is very abrupt & every attempt to meet with his wife who is poorly is met with a rebuff. That is until the day she hears a voice crying for help & discovers why the doctor is reluctant to let her meet his wife. Alisha is virtually a prisoner & he spends all his time in his ‘lab’ in the garden. Little does she realise that her budding friendship with Alisha will threaten all she holds dear.
This was a terrific read & kept me glued to the page. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for this brilliant five star read.
