This was an interesting read, given the developments in technology. What if there was a chance that we could still be here for our family even after we die? This book was an eye opener for decisions that are not that unimaginable in today's society. I loved how the author wrote the evolution of "Abbie ". A great thought- provoking book with a twist at the end you won't expect.
Tried to get into this, but it was not what I thought it would be and didn’t keep my interest. Did not finish.
An immensely quick read and one crazy, crazy story! The synopsis of this novel doesn't tell how "science-y" this book is, but I liked it a lot more than I thought it would. If you're interested in AI (artificial intelligence) and robotics, then you will enjoy this story. What is the definition of a "perfect wife"; how far will someone go to create one; and when will we humans ever learn that there are some things we just shouldn't mess with? The way this story is presented is really clever, and I'm glad I read this one. Thank you, Netgalley, for this arc.
Typically I enjoy a thriller, but this one was one i just could not finish.
I need to be honest in my review and mention that while JP Delaney's writing was lovely and intriguing, the science fiction aspect of this novel was unfortunately just not my cup of tea.
I can understand how someone may enjoy this one, but while I like the more female-centric thrillers, I usually prefer them to be a little more psychological and less science-y in nature.
This captivating book, The Perfect Wife by JP Delaney, is the best story which includes AI, real vs. robotic and heart vs memories. Tim Scott is a genius who owns and runs a huge robotic company. After losing his wife, Abbie, her recreates her, as a robot, in all ways. Tim and Abbie have a young son who becomes a pawn in the deception that ensues between them. I could not put this book down, I was totally captivated by this story along with all the twists and turns. Thank you #NetGalley #ThePerfectWife #BallantineBooks
The Perfect Wife opens with a scene so familiar to contemporary women’s fiction. A woman wakes up after some traumatic, terrible event where she lost her child, her husband, or her memory. Except, her child is alive, her husband is alive, and she knows who she is. At least she thinks she does. But then, she learns she’s a cobot, a companion robot, created to embody the consciousness of her husband’s long-dead and deeply mourned wife Abbie. And that’s when the reader realizes this is going to be a book like no other and the wild ride begins.
Abbie has to figure out how to live as a cobot. She has Abbie’s consciousness, she looks like Abbie, she feels like Abbie, but underneath the removable skin, she is a plastic machine. And no, she’s not a sexbot like the robotic dolls. She also has to navigate raising an autistic son and dealing with his therapy. All this is complicated by her questions about what happened five years earlier and why, if she is the perfect wife, as Tim insists, does she feel so wary.
The Perfect Wife took me by surprise at the beginning and at the end. What more could I ask for? Told from Abbie’s point of view and from an unknown narrator only revealed at the end – and was that a surprise, it is at once completely fair in providing readers with everything they need to know and ingeniously opaque in revealing the other narrator.
There are three great stories here, the story of the mother with her son, the story of the cobot finding her identity, and the mystery of what happened five years ago. They are woven together beautifully with since consideration and insight into what it means to be human. This book surprised me again and again and I love it for that.
The Perfect Wife will be released on August 6th. I received an e-galley from the publisher through NetGalley.

Don't we all love a book about a character having no memory of their past, knowing that we will get to evaluate what is true and what is false? Abbie was very likable and I immediately knew something wasn't right. I cannot imagine having minimal memories of my past and having no other choice than to trust the ones closest to me, even if it feels wrong. This is a great poolside read!
This one was just not for me. I that while reading I honestly didn’t care what had happened to Abbie. I gave up about halfway through.
Fantastic thriller. It kept me interested from beginning until the very end!!! I have not read this author before and I am so glad that I have and will be on the lookout for any other books he writes.
The Perfect Wife by J.P. Delaney has got to be one of my best reads of the YEAR!! This techno-thriller has it all - a very unique and clever plot, a story that is TOTALLY unpredictable, and fascinating characters make for a very compelling read!
This book explores what happens when "The 'A' in AI doesn't stand for 'Artificial' anymore. It stands for 'autonomous.'" There is no smooth road in this novel. It is filled to the brim with twists and turns that could induce whiplash. AND THE ENDING - OMG!!!! - there is so much going on, layers upon layers of delicious cleverness and deceit!
I'll let the book blurb tell you what the publishers want you to know about the book. I refuse to add anything that could spoil this absolutely amazing read! Congratulations, J.P., you really hit it out of the park this time!!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Ballantine Books for allowing me the privilege of reading an ARC of this novel in exchange for an unbiased review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
This was different from previous JP Delaney books. There's some sci-fi, in that one of the main characters is a robot. I had a difficult time with that aspect. However, the novel itself is well written and very exciting.
AI(Artificial Intelligence) how far has it gone and where will it end? In this book almost nothing seems to be what you think it is. Yes sometimes you can guess but plenty of times you be wrong. This story is full of suspense. It combines the real world (problems in a marriage, the tribulations of bringing up an autistic child, sex discrimination and assaults in the work place) with the world of Artificial Intelligence. The ending was a surprise (not a cliff hanger or incomplete story) but it will keep you wondering what might happen in the future.
I will admit, when I first read the description and the first few pages of this book, I thought "Eh...I don't typically like sci-fi books" but I'm glad I gave it a chance! The entwining of suspense and relationship elements worked really well for this type of science fiction, and I could see this being a good pick for a book club because a lot of the scientific/futuristic elements would provoke some interesting discussions! Thank you to Net Galley for allowing me to read and review this book.
Whoa. Wow. I just finished reading “The Perfect Wife” and am mind-blown. It’s not the usual subject matter that would interest me, yet I was very intrigued when reading the summary and I’m glad I did decide to read the book! I admit that I rolled me eyes and groaned silently as the story started to unfold, but the emotional and psychological factors, and the characters, kept me interested and hooked. This book is like no other book I have ever read and there is so much to it that has impressed me, and has left an impression on me. The brilliance and knowledge laced throughout this book is unbelievable, and I am left feeling curious, amazed, mystified, and even hesitant and nervous. The possibilities that are out there are limitless, it is exciting and scary. Aside from the story itself, I also commend this author on the writing of the book. I got sucked in and am so glad I did. I love the idea behind the book, the execution of the story and plot, and the beautifully mastered characters. Very impressed!!!!
Well that was a twist and a half! I enjoyed this one by JP Delaney. It was original and very suspenseful.
Thank you to Netgalley and Random House for access to this book in exchange for my honest review. I have previously read one of Delaney's works before and I was excited for the opportunity to get my hands on an advance copy of this one!
Robots. This book revolves around robots and a husband's infatuation with his wife. The book isn't techie or sci-fi in any way, it just is based around a man who runs a tech company and is trying to build cobots; realistic robots that can help us out emotionally. I actually appreciated how this was written so I could follow along with everything...there's no jargon or anything like that.
Someone is a psycho. I won't say who...it might even be more than one person. This book has some crazy twists and turns. The husband's wife is missing and has been missing for five years. He recreates her in cobot form and it's bizarre. She actually has her own thoughts and feelings. It was interesting!
The book is told from two points of view. We see what is happening through Abby, the cobot version of the wife, and from the office perspective. There isn't really a narrator for the office perspective, but this gives us background as when we read from this point of view, it is typically from the past. It was very unique and I really liked this approach! It added to the mystery and suspense of what was going on. It was like we were peeking inside the office when certain things happened!
This ending. I still have no idea what really happened at the end. It was muddled for me. I think I have a grip of what happened, but it's still very confusing for me. It doesn't help when there are actual people and then robots of the people floating around. If you have read this and have a solid understanding of what happened at the end, let me know. It just doesn't make sense; it was very confusing and I even re-read it three times. Maybe it was just me and my scatter brain self who can't figure it out, haha.
This book is being released on Tuesday, August 6th. It is available for pre-order now!

A captivating, mind-bending, suspenseful read. I loved it!
This is the third book I've read from the author and I feel this story gripped me with the same intensity that it creeped me out. It explores relationships, AI, automation, marriage, data rights, consent, and more, all in a deeply interesting fictional setting.
I love speculative fiction, specially in a sci-fi setting. It's difficult to compare it other books but most likely you will enjoy it if you like TV shows like Black Mirror and Humans.

This book is not what you thought it would be. Although, it is MUCH better than your everyday mystery/ thriller. Look for clues that all is not what it seems and the twist may not sneak up on you. Just know that it's a good book with a couple of unique twists, unless you live in the Twilight Zone.
If you were in a coma for 5 years, what would you think when you woke up? The characters in this book do not respond with the typical reactions, leading us to question everything. Which is a good thing! JP Delaney has done an excellent job of dropping us right in the middle of a family's life while they learn to live life with Mom again. Great book all around.
Thriller first and foremost with a strong speculative tech element to it, The Perfect Wife is an addictive story beginning to end.
My jaw dropped at the end of chapter Twenty-Five (note: not 25) and stayed that way until the very end. Somehow everything fit together perfectly but I didn’t see either of the later reveals coming.
The autism component of the story was presented well. The positive autism philosophy is definitely one I subscribe too and support and the exploration of different therapy methods was interesting, especially coming from someone who has an autistic son in real life.
The writing style points to the story’s greatest mystery and the back and forth perspectives made it that much more interesting. Now that I know who was telling the story, I may need to read it a second time all the way through.
What would I have changed... I think I would’ve liked to have had a better understanding of why Abbie fell for Tim. I had a hard time empathizing with her path and decisions. It’s funny how a story about her resulted in me feeling like I knew her the least.
A fascinating book. I read it in a few hours in one sitting. Extremely difficult to put down once you get hooked in. Every parent who has a child with autism should read this. It is deeply emotional and tugs at the heartstrings. How far would you go to protect your child especially if it is from the other parent? With mind altering tech and a deep mystery you will be glued to the pages.
