I was very intrigued starting right from chapter 1 realizing the main character was not human but a robot. You read that right, a robot. Tim invented Cobot, essentially a robot made to replace loved ones that have passed away. With technology he can make your companion look just like your loved one, and can download memories, thoughts, and personalities. Tim lost his wife and has worked for 5 years to create his very own Cobot. When Abbie wakes up she is so real that she doesn't even believe she's not real, until Tim "unzips" her skin to prove that she indeed is a robot.
The story follows Abbie and her quest to discover what happened to the real Abbie. Some say she jumped off the cliff to her death, others say someone killed her. Cobot Abbie has started to get strange text messages, asking her to purchase a burner phone, and leaving her messages to help her piece together what happened. Could Tim have something to do with Abbie's death?
I finished the book in 24 hours because the flow of the book is so steady I just wanted to find out what happens. The book takes you up to the very last page before it reveals all the juicy details.
Uber creepy, unputdownable, if that's a word. Super fun with a stellar ending! I've loved every unique story that has come from this author, whomever it may be, and I would love to know that information
Wow! What a ride! I was a bit nervous going into this book as I wasn't a big fan of the author's 2 previous books, but once I got started on The Perfect Wife, I couldn't stop. Although I read a lot of thrillers and domestic suspense/thrillers, this whole format, the way the story was created, the way it built to the big reveal - it all felt really new and different, and I LOVED that. Too many books are all basically the same story over and over again. This one felt NEW and DIFFERENT. I may even go back and give the author's other two books a second look.
The only issue I had with the book, and I will admit that it could just be *my* issue, rather than a true problem, is the way the son, Danny, was portrayed, and the comments about Autism Spectrum and treatments. Although the details in this book are different than others I read, some of the info just felt really stereotypical rather than authentic. But really, that is the only real issue I can think of with this story. Although it is a techno thriller, it didn't feel too techy - I didn't feel lost in the details.
Really, I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys thrillers and suspense books. It was a great ride!
Many thanks to Netgalley, the publisher and author for the option of this ARC in exchange for my review.
Really well-written, but a bit too creepy/SciFi for my personal taste. If that doesn’t throw you off this fast-paced thriller, you will likely really enjoy it! Delaney’s other books are still some of my favorites.
This was an ok book for me. I enjoyed the mystery/sci-fi concept, but for some reason it didn't have that wow factor i look for in a mystery. It was somewhat predictable. Will continue reading more by this author though. 3.5 for me!
At the beginning, the idea of an emotional robot reminded me of an episode of Black Mirror, in which the robot ends up stuck in the attic because the person cannot deal with him anymore. I was very curious to see how this book would end.
I enjoy JP Delaney's writing style. He throws short chapters in the past where the narrator is not necessarily clear who it's but you get the idea. Those were a nice complimentary chapters that gave you an image of how things really were from someone else's point of view.
The characters are very well developed and you end up rooting for a few of them. The end throws a few twists in there that I did not see coming. One is still spinning around my head!! I could not put the book down once i got to the last 15-20%!
I received a free e-copy of The Perfect Wife by J.P. Delaney from NetGalley for my honest review.
The Perfect Wife is like no book I have read before. It is a Sci-fi Thriller.
Tim Scott, famous entrepreneur, is married to Abbie Cullen. One day she goes missing while surfing in rough waters. Five years later, Tim builds a robot re-creation of his wife (cobot Abbie). This robot can talk, and was created to have emotions and even memories. Not just any memories though, they are Abbie's memories.
Little by little cobot Abbie is becoming more human with her behavior and the way she thinks. She is soon on a quest for answers about what caused the accident five years ago.
What really happened five years ago? Was Abbie murdered or did she walk away from her family? What kind of secrets is Tim holding onto?
This is like a combination of several movies and tv shows. And it somehow works!
I don't typically like SciFi meshed with other genres, but it worked here. I guess that makes Delaney a genius!
It feels like a cautionary tale. With some heartfelt scenes included too.
What a ride!
This book was crazy...and amazing. Abbie wakes up from a coma not really remembering anything about an accident. When she slowly starts remembering her past, both good and bad memories start to appear. Is her husband Tim that man she thinks he is? Is her son Danny truly ok? What really happened the night she disappeared and why does she keep finding clues that things are not as ideal as everyone would like her to believe. This book is a must read!!!
STEPFORD WIVES meets GONE GIRL in this sci-fi thriller. THE PERFECT WIFE begins with us being introduced to Abbie- or rather, to the cobot, an emotional artificially intelligent robot, who has been created using Abbie’s memories and social media. Abbie feels like herself, but she is confronted by people who view her as a robot and her husband Tim, who views her and their relationship as perfect. The human Abbie had disappeared five years ago, presumably deceased, leaving behind Tim and their son, Danny, who has autism.
The book alternated between the present with Abbie the cobot and the past, when Abbie had come to work for Tim’s company as an artist-in-residence. Interestingly, the book was told in the second-person point-of-view from a source that was revealed to us at the end of the book. The book takes many twists and turns that I did not see coming, and the ending was completely shocking- and so, of course, I loved it. The end is not any type of cliffhanger, also, but I wasn’t sure if I liked what happened. However, I did like being surprised, even though the path to the end was well laid out in hindsight (the best kind of thriller).
The writing style suits the story really well, and it completely pulls you in. This was probably the hardest to put down book I have read in a while. I ended up reading it in only a couple sittings. I was completely gripped by Abbie and her story, past and present. The characterizations and world-building were incredible. Abbie (the cobot and past) leapt off the page, and Tim really appeared to be a doting husband- but, as the summary of the book hints, this may be too good to be true. Adding to that, Danny was really well done, and his autism was portrayed well- plus all the challenges and joys that come with it.
On top of the story, there are also some interesting themes about leadership, ethics/morality, marriage, and humanity/AI that are seamlessly interwoven into the story. Fans of both sci-fi and thrillers can enjoy this delicious ride. I don’t want to say too much more about it- but this book really blew me away, and I loved it!
Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.
Wow!!! This is the third book I have read by JP Delaney. Believe was fantastic and The Girl Before was good. But in this book, JP Delaney has really outdid herself. The blurb really doesn’t really tell you what this book really is about. I guess one could say it is Sci-fi which is really not what I was expecting. But it is much more than that. Abbie, the main character it seems apparently has died and wakes up 5 years later. Her husband Tim is into AI and making Cabot’s. So this is the premise. I am afraid to give away any spoilers. So with that said, this book has more twists and turns and the ending was such a complete twist that I never saw coming, I highly recommend this book. Once I started it and it was not a short novel, I couldn’t put it down. It was a roller coaster of a ride that I wasn’t getting off till I finished it. This is a novel if you like suspense, intrigue and twists and turns. I said before that it was sci-fi but do not let that be a factor in your decision in reading this book, if you do not like sci-fi because it is really does not take anything away from this book. I want to thank net galley for this ARC I received for a honest review. Awesome and a fabulous book!!!
JP Delaney is quickly making her way to the top of my favorite authors list! The Perfect Wife is a twisty thriller with all the makings of a bestseller. Science fiction meets psychological thriller made for a book I flew through and was unable to put down! Definitely looking forward to more from Delaney!
Whhhaaatttt?
Done in one sitting, could not put down.
Was blown away by Delaney's first book, so I knew I had to settle in for the night as soon as this was downloaded.
I'm afraid to really write anything for fear of spoilers. Just read it!
Thanks NetGalley!
Gripping from start to finish, suspenseful with twist and turns, A well written book, I would recommend this book,
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.
Can a robot be designed that perfectly copies the personality and appearance of a human? Would this be morally or ethically acceptable? On the other hand, at what point does the artificial person acquire rights?
As our computer and artificial intelligence capabilities are constantly evolving, could this become reality in the near future?
While a certain amount of suspension of disbelief is required, the reader does not need to be a science fiction fan to appreciate the dynamics and nuances of this novel.
Excellent!
I loved this book. The premise is that the wife of a wealthy tech entrepreneur has some kind of terrible accident, but somehow he was able to anticipate this; because he has created an artificial wife — the perfect wife — with all of his previous wife’s good qualities and memories and none of the bad.
The story is told in alternate time frames, but was easy to follow. Suspenseful and fascinating. Highly recommended.
Creepy sci-fi like thriller. Very interesting and hard to put down. I have never been a fan of sci-fi, but am a huge fan of JP Delaney, and I am so glad I tried this book. Explores the fascinating world of AI (artificial intelligence) and the brilliant minds behind it. When Abbie wakes to find she is a clone of herself and was declared dead after she disappeared on a surfing trip, she is stunned. After all her brilliant husband Tim created her and was able to input memories of events from all through their relationship. But is Tim as trustworthy as he seems and why was he blamed in Abbie’s disappearance. Excellent psychological thriller that is full of twists and turns.
Wow!
I was so surprised and delighted by this book. I was expecting so much less than this amazing, thrilling, twisty sci-fi book.
I hate sci-fi as a genre, but I loved this book, and if I had realized it was sci-fi, I would not have requested it. I would have missed out on so much! This is a great book.
I do not want to give anything away except the book explores a modern marriage of a tech company founder and an artist, soon after an accident takes away most of the artist's memories. As she begins to remember, she wonders about her history, the marriage, and what else she may have forgotten.
This book is amazing. I cannot recommend it enough.
It took me awhile to finish this book. I started it and was surprised when we found out what Abbie was. I actually started it a few times, before I was finally able to push through. But, wow I’m glad I did!! I don’t know what was wrong with me before. This book ended up being very intriguing and was different in a good way to read. I didn’t love the ending, I was kinda hoping for a happy ending. All in all great read, and I’m sorry it took me so long to read it.
A little science fiction mixed in with current technological trends results in a book that I just couldn’t stop reading. The ending is truly unexpected and startling. An outstanding read!
Thanks to Ballantine Books and NetGalley for the chance to read and review this book!
