This book was a little outside of my usual tastes. I generally like thrillers and mysteries, and while this book had some level of intrigue for sure, it was a little too much like science fiction for me to really enjoy. Abbie has died and then comes back to life five years later, but this time as an AI. Her husband is a technological whiz and he has been working on perfecting robots. He has decided his wife should become a "perfect" version of her former self. I won't reveal anything else because I am worried about giving away too much of the storyline, but things don't always work out as planned. The book will likely appeal to those who like to read futuristic stories. Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for providing me with an ARC in return for an honest review.
The Perfect Wife was very different than the books that I normally read, but I was craving a psychological thriller, and the plot intrigued me. This was also the first book that I've read by JP Delaney.
This was a well-written book, the plot was twisty and interesting, the characters well-developed and thought out. I liked Abby very much.
Overall, although this was a good book, I wasn't a fan of the sci-fi aspect. Many people will love this book, but it wasn't my cup of tea.
I've been reading quite a few psychological dramas lately, and this is one of the best. Abbie wakes up to find she's an AI of the presumed-dead Abbie, wife of tech genius Tim and mother to son Danny, who has autism.
The story unfolds as Abbie discovers the details of her human's life, and it's a thoroughly enjoyable ride. The plot kept me guessing, even when I figured out one thing and assumed I knew it all. This is not a sci-fi read despite the AI focus; it's a fascinating exploration into what is sentient, what is human, and what our future could hold.
My only complaint is the title...just too boring and inaccurate for the complexity of this novel.
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House Publishing Group for this ARC.
I loved Delaney's book Believe Me and I really looked forward to this one. I was not disappointed. I was hooked from beginning to end. The pacing was perfect. The plot unfolded perfectly. There is a dual timeline narrative but it is done in a way that it does not interfere with the main narrative. Due to the nature of the characters there is quite a bit of character development through out the book. The atmosphere was set in the no too distant future and it felt plausible. The writing was great. I was captivated by the the story and never distracted by the writing style.
I would give this book a 4.5 star rating, rounding up to a 5. The only thing that I did not like was the ending. I literally read it three times to understand what happened and I am still not 100% sure I understand it but maybe that was intended.
I highly recommend this book.
This was my favorite of J.P. Delaney to date which was weird for me because I found this book to be more sci-fi than a true psychological thriller. AI version of a real person? Learning all of her mannerism, memories, and of course her secrets. In this day and age this technology could be just around the corner which is what I think piqued my interest. The plot has a few holes in it and it did take me longer to read this than it normally would any other book but over good.
This book was a little different for me. It was confusing at first but as I kept reading kept my interest. I've never really read a book about robots so I found it amazing reading about what people are capable of creating.
If Westworld and The Stepford Wives and Sleeping With the Enemy and Gone Girl had a baby, J.P. Delaney would be the baby daddy.

I found this book to be fascinating. I think it’s my favorite of JP Delaney’s novels so far. I loved all the references to technology and how it weaved in with the psychological suspense. The switch between the different voices added to the mystery as well. I ended up reading it mostly in one night!
A mesmerizing, captivating story! I loved this thriller and can't wait for more books by this author!
The Perfect Wife by J.P. Delaney is truly a "remarkable" tale. As the reader, I try to vary the genres of novels that I read, and have struggled with Sci-fi novels in the past. The PERFECT WIFE was not a struggle for me. I loved how the story was told, the struggles of the characters and the premise of this novel. J.P. Delaney's newest novel had me hooked especially after reading the prologue.
The Perfect Wife is truly an amazing story, a new take on artificial intelligence. When you are looking for the answers who you can really trust, what it means, and what happens when you find out the truth behind it all.
What will happen when Abbie Cullen learns the real truth behind her life? Is it just a memory, plotted memories, or someone else pulling the string?
Thank you J.P. Delaney for writing a fantastic novel. The Perfect Wife I was intrigued by, I could not put it down. Wow, even had me guessing. I love books that keep me questioning things, even after I think I had it all (or some of it) figured out. I love that in a novel.
Books about AI (artificial intelligence) are not something I would normally read. However, I liked JP Delaney's previous work so I thought I would give this book a try.
Tim and Abbie are an interesting couple that don't really seem like a good fit, but they are in love. When live becomes too difficult, Abbie looks for a way out. She wants a better life for her and her son Danny. However, we soon learn that she has disappeared. Tim creates a cobot version of her. Is this version of Abbie the perfect wife? Or is that such a thing?
This book has plenty of twists and turns that will have you speculating right until the end as to what happened to Abbie.
Love this author, but I’m not sure how I feel about the book. While the book was entertaining, I found it very disturbing. I have strong feelings on AI and how it is being used and this book reinforced those feelings.
The story did flow, there were surprises along the way and I kept my attention, The premise of the book is just scary.
While reading, I mentioned to a lot of people I was reading a book I wasn’t sure how I felt about it. I explained the premise and they are looking forward to reading it after it’s released in August. Overall, I think this is what you want from a book, one which gets people talking and this book will certainly do that.
Very interesting book. I haven't read another one like it, which is always a good thing! The storyline was interesting, the characters were intriguing. Perfect amount of suspense to keep me wanting to read more. Highly recommend.
Abbie, a married woman with a young child, awakens years after an accident. Her husband is by her bedside and begins to fill in some of the blanks.
Chapter by chapter the mystery of her accident takes tons of twists and turns and is like nothing I’ve read before. For fear of giving away too much of the plot and the experience that go along with it, I can only say that this was nothing that I expected, when I picked it up to read it; it was kind of weird but really good all at the same time.
When I first started reading the book and realized that the narrator was a robot, I was a little thrown. But then, when I remembered all the robots who really have emotions and aren’t just a hunk of metal–like the Battlestar Galactica cylons and Westworld’s friendly neighborhood robots–and I realized that I could relate to a robot.
And Abbie is the cadillac of robots. She was made to take the place of millionnaire tech genius, Tim, who lost his wife 5 years earlier. Not only does she resemble Abbie in every way–unless of course you peel back her skin–but she also has Abbie’ memories. Tim found a way to download them onto her hard drive.
I had a bit of issue with that, I just couldn’t wrap my head around how a robot could be truly programmed with someone’s memories, and not just someone else’s abridged version of those. But how is not necessarily important to the story.
I really enjoyed this one. It was interesting watching Abbie the robot wake up to the realities that were Abbie the human’s life. Through this plot mechanism, Delaney is able to feed the reader a bit of Abbie and Tim’s backstory just a morsel at a time.
That said, I was never on the edge of my seat, and I was a little confused by the end. It may actually warrant a re-read of that part. But Delaney opens up an interesting train of thought. How human can we make robots? When have we gone too far?
Special thanks to Netgalley and Ballantine Books for an e-galley in exchange for my honest review. This one is out August 6, 2019. This review will be published to my blog, Women in Trouble Book Blog, on July 10, 2019.
I know this book isn’t due out for quite awhile, but I couldn’t wait to read it. The title gives away NOTHING about the contents of the plot. An AI as a wife? An AI as a wife that needs to solve a missing persons case? An AI that...well, I can’t tell you the rest.
I was engaged from this book from the very beginning. I didn’t know anything about it, didn’t even know what it was about. I requested purely because I have enjoyed all of JP Delaney’s previous books. I remember gasping at the end of the first few chapters when the first “bomb” dropped.
While AI characters are becoming popular in literature, this book felt completely original. I highly recommend to anyone interested in a good mystery!
Thank you to Random House-Ballantine for an ARC of this book. All thoughts are my own.
One of the most interesting,, albeit different, novels I’ve read in a while! I probably wouldn’t have picked it if I had more info on the premise - and that would have been my loss. A great book that leaves many interesting questions long after it’s finished.
**I received an ARC for an honest review by NetGalley and the Publisher.**
J.P. Delaney back with another incredible book! A missing woman gets her chance at life thanks to her rich husband. However, there may be deadly consequences in this psychological thriller. Abbie has no memory of who she is, where she is from, or more intriguing, how she got to where is now.. She also awakens to a rich icon of the tech world telling her that he is her husband. He tries to convince her that he knows exactly who she is; which is a loving mother, an artist with a lot of talent, and the perfect wife.
I've read a few of J.P. Delaney's books now and all of them, every single one, has made my jaw drop as in "what in the world did I just read?" but in a good way!! I'm not a huge sci-fi fan so reading past reviews of AI intelligence made me question if I was actually going to enjoy this one or not. The psychological thrill ride that this book takes you on is non-stop. It is a fantastic, that's such a lame word when it is more than that, read! This may be my favorite one yet! (Although, I keep saying that about these novels, the greatness never ends!)
Let me start by saying the only reason for not giving the fifth star is because I don’t know who was telling the story. That being said, it’s a great story and very interesting.
I was very close to putting it down after the first couple of pages, but I decided to stick with it and see which direction it took. I’m so glad I did! I really liked Abbie and the further the story progressed, the more I liked her.
I figured out part of the mystery, but not all of it. In fact, there’s a couple of twists at the end I didn’t see at all!
Very good, tragically heartbreaking, and suspenseful.
Thank you JP Delaney for the voice you have given to this story to help bring awareness.
Wow! What did I just read!. I have to admit, when I started The Perfect Wife, by JP Delaney, and the “Cobot Abbie” was introduced, I almost quit reading. But I was quickly pulled in, fully engaged and binge reading amazing tale. Part sci-fi, part love story, part tragedy, this book has it all! Well developed flawed characters and a richly detailed storyline. An exploration of what is it that makes one human and the differing levels of humanity., including an in-depth look at autism . Such a great novel!
