What an interesting story. It is scary that it could almost be a possibility in our not to distance future! The one that I feel so very sorry for is little Danny, he is totally innocent of everything. You write a fantastic book JP Delaney, I can’t wait to read the next book of yours. Thanks for the great read!
I received a copy of this book from Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion. I personally love a good suspenseful book and was hoping for more of that with this book. This book had a little too much science fiction for my taste and I had a difficult time finishing it. I believe the author is very well known and I would definitely try to read another book by JP Delaney if the opportunity presents itself
I was intrigued by the premise of this story from the very first chapters and had high hopes for it. While I found the plot entertaining, thought provoking and, occasionally, somewhat disturbing, my enjoyment of the book was marred by a couple of things. [Spoiler alert here]. First, the alternating POV between what happened to “you” and what happened to “we” was not particularly difficult to follow, but I found myself distracted by trying to figure out who the narrator was (I guessed incorrectly). At the end of the book, the narrator is revealed. It makes sense for the “you” narrative but not for the “we” portion. Secondly, I kept wondering how Abbie’s memories could be captured and uploaded. There’s a reference to data being gathered from social media, but there were memories that I don’t believe could be culled that way, nor could they be intuited. I realize readers need to suspend disbelief but this went too far and discredited the entire character for me.
On the journey to the end of the book, however, I was interested in the way Danny’s autism was portrayed and horrified by the extreme measures he was subjected to. I ended up doing some further research on the subject of the ABA therapy and standard practices which do not seem to align with those in the story, to my relief.
I think many readers will not be bothered by the same things that spoiled some of this for me, and recommend it to fans of The Girl Before.
Thanks to NetGallery, the publisher and author for a complimentary copy to read and review.
This cautionary tale about AI, morality and ethics also dealt with a heartbreaking story of a family dealing with a child on the autism spectrum. The topic was timely and original - and partly demonstrated the difference between an human with impaired empathy and an AI cobot with empathy. I know there are people like Tim - perfectionist, obsessive and controlling - but I doubt if they would ever be attracted to someone like Abby.
I had a hard time getting through this book primarily because I never knew who the narrator was, the past was told in the first person POV (I), while some portions are told in the second person (you). I could never tell what to believe about the story or the characters and the situations seemed too contrived - including the ending.
I think the book lost focus in the middle and never picked up the loose ends, just added more twists and repeated the back story. Nathan helping Tim find the Abbiebot would have worked if Tim hadn't revealed that he knew what Abbie was thinking LL long and he was able to identify when her circuits shorted in the water and she "died". The events leading up too the ending were well played, and believable but the ending left me confused and I felt it was rushed.
I guess I should pass on future tech sci fi as it is not a genre that I can get into. I received the ARC from NetGalley and Random House in exchange for an honest review.
I’d give this one 3.5 stars rounded up to 4
It was decent and kept my interest throughout. There were some twists in the end that I wasn’t expecting! This is my third book I’ve read by this author and probably my favorite so far!
NetGalley helped me discover JP Delaney and I have been a fan of his past novels. This one I did enjoy but not as much, though I still gave it a high rating. This one was a very slow start for me. Parts of this book are written as if the book is speaking to you — I hated that. I didn’t find myself rooting for any character — except Danny, the autistic son of Tom and Abbie. I was nervous about the portrayal of him but felt that my worries were for no reason; the discussion of ABA therapy was an interesting one and learning that this comes from the author’s own personal experiences with his autistic son made it even better. This is an …interesting story. This is a hard one for me to talk about. The writing was good, the characters were okay, and the aspect was super different — an AI being used to bring your wife back to life? Uh, what?
Another great one by JP Delaney. I really enjoyed this novel. Twists and turns I didn't expect coming, made it a definite 4 out of 5 stars for me!
I have enjoyed every book I have ever read by this author, and this one was also one that kept me glued to my seat. A page turner to say the least, you won't see what's coming until it is right there.
The perfect wife is about a robotic wife that causes controversy in the real world vs the cyber world. She was created by her husband whom wanted to bring her back to life after she went disappearing. Tim becomes the center of contraversy because his robotic creation seems to be ethically and morally wrong. As Abby the robot begins to understand her former self, she becomes more curious about her previous life and the life and lies that were.
I truly enjoyed the book although it was of a different genre than expected. Even though this is a thriller / mystery it is also part sci-fi. An element I actually enjoyed. The book does have a nice twist towards the end and a very conclusive ending that I enjoyed. If you like books about robots and Mysteries then this is the book for you!
LOVED this one! Twists at both the beginning AND end? I'm sold. Abbie wakes up in the hospital with no memory of how she got there and realizes she has been in a terrible accident... that happened 5 years ago. As she works through her memories and tries to figure out the truth behind her accident, tries to reconnect with her autistic son who barely remembers her and questions her husband's motives, I was totally on the edge of my seat waiting to see how it was all going to end. Let me tell you-- I thought I saw the twist that was coming, but the ending I had "figured out" was totally wrong and the REAL twist was nothing I could've imagined! If you're a fan of JP Delaney, this one is a can't miss. The protagonist is truly unlike any I've come across in any recent thrillers!
I could not finish this book. I have enjoyed Delaney's previous work, but this one was too far-fetched. I don't get into fantasy or sci-fi unless there is some realness to it.
J. P. Delaney! WOW! Like nothing I’ve ever read before! I read this book without reading a single review or the blurb and for that I am so grateful! This is a book that’s best gone into completely blind. It was highly original, fairly unbelievable, and brilliant! That’s all you’re getting from me... just read it! Open your mind and enjoy the ride!
*** Big thanks to Random House Valentine for my copy of this book ***
This book is unlike anything I've ever read before! It was complex, intelligent, thought provoking and beautifully written. Highly recommended to folks who like domestic drama or psychological thrillers
A cross between Twilight Zone, Stepford Wives, and Gone Girl that raises the question of what is human? I could not put this book down! With the exception of a few pages about 2/3 through where the author spends some time lecturing on autism, I would highly recommend this thought-provoking suspense book.

When Abby wakes up with no memory of recent events, she discovers (is told) that she's really an android with the consciousness of her creator's dead wife. As shocking as this sounds, the real story is even more surprising. There are plenty of twists and turns with plenty of commentary on what it means to be human, trust in a marriage, the pain of dealing with a child who is different, and so much more. The story never lags except those few pages mentioned above. My heart broke for Abby and her son.
Abbie knows something is different about her when she awakes in a hospital facing a stranger calling himself her husband and informing her that they have an autistic child. The more she learns about their life, the more disturbed she is by that stranger, her husband. She is determined to discover how she ended up in the hospital, who she is exactly, and how to protect their son. Delaney blends technology into the story so well that at one point it’s challenging to determine who is who and who has done what to whom. The moral of the story seems to be beware human megalomania rather than the technology they produce. I was fortunate to receive this well-written, accessible sci-fi story from the publisher Ballantine Books through NetGalley.
Very interesting different type of suspense story. You will never guess the ending of this mystery no matter how hard you try...I was blown away!
If you loose your perfect love could you just build yourself another just like her to replace her?
Well written, great characters, amazing plot earns a 4 star rating.
The Perfect Wife was almost like watching an episode of Black Mirror. It was completely crazy but so intriguing at the same time. I felt like the ending was extremely rushed and had to reread it to make sure I understood what was going on but over all this was a really interesting story.
From the outside it seems as if Abbie and Time had the greatest relationship. That is until the day that Abbie disappeared. When she awakes, she isn't quite sure what has happened to her or who she should trust. Desperate to find out what has happened to herself, she will have to chose her adversaries carefully. Will she be able to find out the truth or will she disappear again?
Thank you to NetGalley and Ballantine Books for the opportunity to read and review this book.
When I first started this book, I thought it was going to be another thriller where you could see what is going to happen from a mile away, but that was not the case. I got thrown for a loop right after the very first chapter. That changes the whole dynamic of the book and has your brain churning the entire time. There is an unreliable narrator and you never really find out who they are. The end had me still asking questions when it was all over.
I have enjoyed all of the books that JP Delaney has written. They have all left me on the edge of my seat, dying to find out what is going to happen next. This book was no exception, it just had a different approach to the story. If you like psychological thrillers, you will enjoy this book.
I picked up this in a flurry of other thriller novels, and this one delivered such a punch I couldn't help but be thinking of it long after I finished, and laid it down. I have been a fan of JP Delaney's and was excited to see more books, but this one kept me guessing in new and exciting ways. A great follow up.
What an absolutely great book but don’t get fooled in the beginning into thinking that it is a sci-fi book as I first did. I hate sci-fi and almost decided to not read it which would have been a terrible mistake! It is most definitely a mystery/thriller that keeps you going nonstop.
That said I was a bit disappointed with the ending but that might have been because I wanted a happy ending which I didn’t get.
The story is basically about a beautiful woman who is married to a tech mogul and then mysteriously disappear. A beautiful part of the book deals with their autistic son.
Many thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
