This is certainly an imaginative book based on current advances in technology. Although it has some thought-provoking themes, the character development wasn’t as robust as it could have been. Overall, an enjoyable read.
Thank you netgalley for the advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. I did not like this book, but that's on me. It is not a reflection of this author. I adore JP Delaney and I should have read more about what this book was before I requested it. Sci fi is just not what I want to read. I would definitely read more by JP Delaney though (assuming it's psychological thrillers!)
I loved this book! I didn't want to stop reading Abbie's story. The mystery of what happened to Abbie was very compelling. I loved the ending! Unfortunately what happened to Abbie seems like it could really happen in the future, and that was very scary. I would definitely recommend this book. A 5 out of 5! Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book for my honest review.
This book sounds amazing, but at this time it just isn’t for me. I think it will be great when I am ready to come back to it!
So when I started this novel...I thought “oh, crap it is a science fiction fantasy thing “ But I slogged on as I get an ARC for my review and I feel like I owe it to the author to give it a serious try before I give up on any novel.
I have to say I was very pleased and surprised that this book is so good. Really good.
Basically it is about a tech giant that builds a robot to replace his missing wife.....however there is much more to it including their Autistic son. And the fact that the wife is missing or dead or not.....
Really good writing, plot twists and just fun to think on the implications and possibilities of robot replacements
Highly recommended
An amazing new novel from JP Delaney! Although not as much of a psychological thriller as his last two, The Perfect Wife is a deeply thought provoking mystery. Protagonist Abbi wakes up after an accident completely changed, missing memories, with a husband she's not sure she can completely trust. Following breadcrumbs to unravel her knowledge of the past few years, she must not only find herself, but her new role in a changing world that distrusts her mere existence. I loved the author's in depth theories, thoughts, and comparisons on how the human and computer brain process feelings. I must read for fans of I, Robot!
This was a great edge of your seat book! This book kept me captivated the whole time! I could not put it done!
I am so utterly confused with how I feel about this book. Is it a fantastic, nail-biting thriller? Is it a twisted commentary on reality? It’s both. I think I loved and hated it at the same time. Needless to say, this will be a book I think about for a long time.

What would you do if you lost the love of your life? Build a robot replica and download their memories into the AI? If you’re tech guru Tim Scott, that’s exactly what you do. But is this really because of his eternal love for his disappeared(possibly dead) wife? Or is something more sinister going on?
Told mostly in the POV of Abbie (2.0), the cobot Tim created in his wife Abbie’s image, we watch as she learns and grows in her role as replacement Abbie. She soon appears to become sentient, and sets upon figuring out what happened to the real Abbie.
I really enjoyed this novel. It’s full of suspense and small twists. There were times I felt there was little too much info dump (like when it gives you the step by step of a complicated recipe). But overall it was a book that I found hard to put down.
I received an advanced copy through Netgalley in return for an honest review.
This was such a mind-bending story. Imagine waking up from a coma, but not remembering anything that happened to you. As you are getting your bearings you find out that not only have you been in this coma for five years – you’re not really you. You’re a robot. A robot that has been filled with human memories. Well…your memories.
Honestly I don’t want to say much more about the book because I don’t want to spoil anyone. And what I said above? That brief intro? That’s just chapter one.
Seriously this brief intro is only like the first chapter of this book. By the end of the first few chapters I had so many questions. What happened to Abbie? Is her marriage as great as her memories seem? Is this robot really Abbie? Is this a new Abbie? Do robots even have feelings? This book just gets into so many issues that the world will be facing as technology continues to grow and evolve. It was a fascinating page turner with a lot of twists and turns for sure. And also one of those books that leaves you thinking long after the pages have run out.
Hands down, no questions asked, I will read anything that Mr. Delaney writes. TPW just solidified that for me. I was sucked in (to my surprise) right from the start. I did not expect to have the feelings and compassion that I felt for “Abbie”. That is a nod to the author that he is able to pull those emotions from you (you’ll understand once you’ve read TPW, as I don’t want to spoil the plot). TPW is chock full of twists, turns, lies, deception and on some level, unconditional love. I am already anticipating Mr. Delaney’s next book.
What an interesting concept for a book! It was a super-fast read that kept me on the edge of my seat until the very last word!
I finished this in a day! It’s a fun sci-fi twist on the thriller genre. It was full of twists left and right - I recommend for a quick vacation read!
OMG...I finished reading this book in one sitting. I couldn't put it down! I didn't really know what to expect when I started reading this, but holy cow, it definitely surpassed all my expectations. A fabulous thriller that kept me on the edge throughout the entire story; with an ending I never saw coming.
Abbie Cullen-Scott wakes up in a hospital with no memory of what happened to her or how she even got there. The man claiming to be her husband is a tech genius who claims that he couldn't survive the past 5 years of living with his grief after her "accident." So he did the impossible, he built a Cobot, an artificial intelligence companion robot. She looks exactly like Abbie did, sounds like her, has her body, and some memories stored on a hard drive that is her brain. But her memories are selective, only what Tim wants her to remember.
Abbie was an artist who loved to surf. Apparently she had a surfing accident and died. Tim couldn't live without her, so he created a new Abbie 2.0. As her memories start to come back to her slowly, she realizes what really happened to her. She was only built so Tim could find the real Abbie who disappeared on purpose. But why did she run?
Not everything is what is seems to be. Can Abbie 2.0 find out the truth before the court orders her to be destroyed and her memories wiped out?
A must read!!
I just couldn't get into this one. I'm ridiculously uninterested in anything sci-fi, so I'm going to blame that. I let this get past 3 months (or 5) because I simply couldn't get into it.
3.5/5 stars for this domestic/sci-fi thriller.
Why I’m rounding up to 4 stars:
This book had a unique plot for a domestic thriller. Missing/presumed dead wife, Abbie, is brought back home in the form of an AI robot. She had memories that belong to Abbie and has feelings. It makes it interesting yet also a little frightening.
I also enjoyed Abbie’s story being told in second person. I usually don’t care for that style but in this case, Abbie seems more human and relatable. I also liked the off set chapters that were told from an anonymous source throughout the book giving an interview feel leading up to the real Abbie’s disappearance.
What I didn’t like:
Some of the book was too drawn out. Luckily, the chapters were short so it’d pick up again rather quickly but it still seemed a bit long. I also didn’t care for the ending. While I didn’t predict what was going to happen, I think I would’ve like an alternate end.
I’d recommend this to anyone that likes domestic thrillers and wants a unique twist! Many thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC!
Loving the author's previous books, I went in blind on this one. It was definitely not what I expected. This one to put it mildly was a little strange for me, but in part, also kind of genius.
I am a big fan of mystery/suspense/thriller books and romance/chick lit books, so this felt very different from what I normally read. I felt it was sci-fi or futuristic more than a suspenseful book, but it sure kept me interested throughout because I wanted to know what was going to happen next, and because you just knew as the story unfolded something big was going to happen and we would find out what happens to the real Abbie. I thought the story was very original and very well written. The author very methodically lead you down the path to the ending. Interesting characters. The let down was that I thought the ending was rushed/thrown together, other than that I really liked this book. I read the kindle version of this book and bought the audible version of the book so when I couldn’t read I could listen. It was one credit worthy. The narrators were fabulous. I recommend this book or audible book to anyone who enjoys science fiction mystery. I received the kindle advanced copy in exchange for my honest review. Thank you to Random House Publishing Group-Ballentine via NetGalley for the ARC.
I cannot get into this book. I don't know if it's the sci-fi aspect or what, but it just doesn't hold my interest. It seems like the majority of people do, in fact, love this book, so I'm the odd one out here. Don't pass it by because I don't enjoy it
Thank you Netgalley and Ballentine Books for the advance reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
I was expecting a typical family psychological thriller from the book but was pleasantly surprised with the unique sci-fi twists to The Perfect Wife. It did lag some along on the way but what a great concept!
Thanks to NetGalley, BallantineBooks and the author J.P. Delaney for a digital review copy. This book was first published August 6, 2019.
