Really enjoyed the first two in this series. This book was very well written but just seemed unnecessary. If the tie was still to Melvin, there was too much in the story related to the letters that 'someone' was still sending. So much gunfire and car chasing... just felt like a glob of 'thriller action' with no real point and a tenuous hold on the original plot of finding a missing girl. I finished the book to see what happened but not necessarily because I was invested. This series ended when Melvin died, IMO. if there are more in the series, I likely won't read them.
I enjoyed reading this book. It had a good story to it. I liked the variety of characters in it. It is my first book read by this author. I hope to read more books by this author.
Thank you Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing this ARC for a review. When I requested this title, I didnt realize it was the 3rd book in the series. I had Stillhouse Lake on my list of books to read, so I decided to read it and Killman Creek first. Wolfhunter River was just as riveting as the first two books, even though the main storyline had been finished in Killman Creek. Wolfhunter River starts with Gwen deciding to go public with her story on a tv talk show, where she is shocked to discover the interview is not what she was expecting and starts her nightmare over again. As she tries to continue her life, she receives a call from a woman seeking help which draws her to the small town of Wolfhunter after discovering she has been killed.
While this book does not have the extreme psychological drama as the first two books, it has enough twist and turns to keep you interested in turning the page. I couldnt put the book down at certain points. I liked the way the book ended; the author can choose to end the series, or continue it....and I really hope she continues it!!!!
Gwen Procter is back after what felt like forever!! Killman Creek seemed such a long time ago but once I got started on Wolfhunter River it felt like yesterday. I am such a fan of this series and couldn't wait to dive in and see what would happen to Gwen, Sam and the kids this time - especially after her serial killer husbands death in the previous book. This family is cursed I swear - so much death and evil around them - and yet they are strong and find a way to get through it all, Not sure I could be - I would be curled up in the fetal position wishing it would all go away! This installment was no different and if there is trouble to be had then Gwen seems to find it - and I was hooked once again!!
After Melvin's death the family are trying to find what normal for them is. Gwen and Sam are happy and kids seem to be getting along with things. Gwen is convinced to give an interview and things go downhill from there. She is contacted by Marlene Crockette from another remote town of Wolfhunter. She fears for her life and that of her daughter. Gwen can't help herself and the family head to Wolfhunter to help only to find that Marlene is dead and her daughter has been arrested for her murder. Wolfhunter is not a town you want to visit let alone live in - the local police and dodgy as they come and nobody cane be trusted. Gwen is determined to get to the bottom of it and her life and that of her family are in danger. Sam's past also comes back to haunt him - putting his relationship with Gwen in jeopardy.
Another great book from Rachel Caine. the ending shows where the next book in the series is heading and I for one can't wait to see how that plays out.
Thanks to Thomas and Mercer and Netgalley for my advanced copy of this book to read. All opinions are my own and are in no way biased.
It's always such a great feeling when a third book in a series can still hold its own. Caine kept things interesting and entertaining and I was super excited to read more in the Stillhouse Lake story. I'm a fan of Caine and Gwen and if there are more books I'll definitely keep reading.
4.5 I really enjoyed this book, even though I finished book 2 last year, this one brought me right back in as if I had just read it. I really enjoy this authors writing style. Wolfhunter definitely kept me up at night to finish it, just like the other 2 in the series. While the other 2 kept me wanting more and itching to find out what happens next with Gwen and her family, this one left me feeling satisfied. I wish there had been more development of the missing girls throughout the book. Any book that has me thinking about it days after I finish is a great book!
This is the third (and so not final) book in the Stillhouse Lake series (I was sure this was just a duology), featuring a strong main character who will never ever get her happy ending.
I’m pretty sure Gwen’s suffering will never end and it’s so hard to read about the shit she has to deal with. This series makes me deeply anxious, but at the same time it’s exceptionally addictive. I don’t know if I can continue reading these books, the unfairness of Gwen’s life makes me not want to. (I will most definitely pick up the next book, I know I won’t be able to resist.)
If you’re up for a thriller that will make your heart race and cause you a lot of stress, then this one is for you. I would recommend this series to everyone.
I love the Stillhouse Lake series, and Gwen Proctor is a favorite character. She's fierce, smart, resourceful and very, very paranoid -- justifiably so. Which is why I didn't enjoy Wolfhunter River as much as the two earlier books in the series. Gwen simply wasn't paranoid enough.
In this third book, the Gwen we readers have come to admire for her staunch maternal priorities acted way out of character. She puts herself in the public eye with a TV appearance (inconsistency number one); she impulsively, with no planning or research, dives into an obviously treacherous situation in which she nor her loved ones have any personal stake (#2), and she takes her family along with her into peril (#3)! Who is this woman, and what have y'all done with Gwen?
Once we are past that implausible leap, the rest of the book is well-plotted and suspenseful. Except-- none of these other events would have come to light if not for that improbable, unbelievable, initial decision. It was too sudden, too out-of-character for me to follow along wholeheartedly.
I like Gwen's kids, and I think Sam is a decent man. There is hope, especially with a possible new career on the horizon for Gwen. I appreciate it when characters who have won me over grow and evolve. But I don't trust sudden transformations, in life or in fiction.
I was wondering how, with her husband dead, we would get another book out of this scenario...and it really is like a new story with the same characters (perhaps setting up options for more?).
This time round Gwen is struggling to keep a lid on things. She has been acquitted of any crime, but there are still people who are convinced of her guilt. Some of those people are very dangerous - they have money and the means to cause problems. She doesn’t want to leave Stillhouse but with a film-crew shadowing them, there’s potential for things to go very wrong.
The opening story doesn’t immediately seem relevant, and it takes some time before the pieces come together.
The family are healing, slowly, but things happen that cause flashbacks and serve as dangerous reminders of what they have endured.
When Gwen takes a call from a scared woman she sees it as nothing out of the ordinary. Then her daughter calls with the news that her mother is dead, and people are coming for her. As a witness to this (albeit over the phone), Gwen is asked to give a statement.
Heading to mysterious Wolfhunter it soon becomes clear that this town has its share of dark secrets and awful events. Gwen, Sam and the kids are soon caught up in an awful scenario that goes way beyond the worst things you can imagine.
Seriously odd and unpleasant, and this family really are being out through the wringer for our entertainment. When it’s this good, though, it’s fine.
Thank you to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in advance of publication in exchange for my honest review.
Thank you to the publisher, netgalley, and Rachel Caine for this early copy! .
I read the first two books in The Stillhouse lake series and couldn't wait to see what Rachel Caine had in store for Gwen, Lanny, Conner and Sam. I love how Gwen has handled her situation after all she has been through. And this book was no exception. It took a bit to get into this book, as compared to Stillhouse Lake and Killman Creek. BUT I'll tell you, once the story picked up, it was loaded with action. It didn't feel rushed, and I love that this book had multiple plots going on. In the end all your questions are answered perfectly! I don't know if there will be more books in this series, but I hope there is! I feel there are so many more things that can be done with this story. I recommend you read the first two books in the series first so you don't miss out. But if you decide not to, This one can be read as a standalone.
I liked the first two books in this series much better than this one, but this was still a very good read.
Wolfhunter River (Stillhouse Lake #3) by Rachel Caine , reunites the reader with Gwen, Lanny, Connor, and Sam, who should be working towards a calm and peaceful existence after all they have been through. When Gwen receives a phone call from a strange and scared woman, things are about to change.
Although I enjoyed the book, I felt there was just too much going on. It was almost like the family became a band of “Super Heroes” with a quest to make things right.
Challenges they faced:
• Opening book TV show twist
• The return of Miranda and the Lost Angels
• Sam’s secret
• Lots of issues in WolfHunter River
• A kidnapping
• Missing women
• A rebirth of a 60’s cult
• Corrupt officials
• High body counts
• Family members always in danger
• No peace for this family
And yet by the end of the book, it was all dealt with and delivered with a bow on top.
I have no problems with excitement in life, but the level of excitement in this book just seemed like it was too much. How is this family supposed to move forward from the unfortunate past that Melvin Royal involved them in? The strange thing is, the family seems to be a functional unit, and the bond remains strong, especially between Gwen and the children.
The strongest characters in the book are the ones we already know from books 1 & 2. The new characters have just enough info provided to make them seem real. I actually felt neutral about them.
The book ends on a positive note, and the epilogue suggests this might not be the end of the stories.
I wish to thank the Author, Netgalley and the Publisher - Thomas & Mercer for the advanced reader’s copy in exchange for an honest review.
The expected publication date is April 23rd, 2019.
For me, this was a 2.75 star read out of 5 stars, rounded up to 3 stars.
This series continues to surprise me!! 4 solid stars for Rachel Caine’s ‘Wolfhunter River’!
Synopsis: Gwen is still trying to find what normal means to her. After all, her ex-husband turned out to be a serial killer. The media isn’t making it easy on her and her kids, so she’s constantly vigilant. But she can’t also ignore a cry for help. Marlene is terrified; something sinister is going on in her town of Wolfhunter. When Gwen shows up, Marlene is dead. And Gwen learns that girls are disappearing left and right with no explanation. Before she knows it, Gwen and her family are wrapped up in this mess. More murders happen and it looks like a corrupt police force might be brushing them under the rug!
You guys! This book was so good. I just love how Rachel Caine can continue the storyline without it feeling forced. This book in particular has multiple plot lines, all of which help blend the storylines from the previous two books into this one. There is an added drama - the “documentary” - which allows for deeper character development to occur between Sam and Gwen. You really get to see how tethered they are to one another.
As for the actual “case” in Wolfhunter, it is sinister and shady! It reminds me of a Dateline episode. Young girls vanishing without a trace and the community is too afraid to tell the police they aren’t doing enough! You don't know who to trust - everyone seems "at fault".
There are a few valleys where specific plotlines are ignored for what seems like a long period of time and so that’s why I docked a star. Otherwise - GET ON THIS!
Thank you to NetGalley and Amazon Publishing for my ARC in exchange for this review!
“I’m always scared that I’m going to get hurt, even when nobody wants to hurt me. Which is why I reject people hard, first. I’m trying not to do that anymore. I fell in love with Dahlia; she makes my heart race and makes me want to cry inside when we’re separated, and that’s what love is, right?”*
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Gwen Proctor is back in the public eye as the relative of one of her husband’s victims renews her efforts to seek revenge via media and internet smear campaigns. Their goal is to continue to paint Gwen as a partner in her husband’s murder spree, when in reality, she was also a victim of his lies and manipulation, and nearly killed at his hand. All Gwen wants to do is to raise her kids, Lanny and Conner, in peace, but the public wants them all to pay dearly for their imagined crimes.
A phone call seeking help provides the perfect excuse for the Proctor family to flee their problems, however, nosing into the case of a young girl accused of killing her mother in cold blood brings more trouble for Gwen and puts a new target on her back. Meanwhile, she discovers a secret that could rupture her relationship with Sam. Not only does she need to protect the lives of herself and her kids, she also must protect her heart.
WOLFHUNTER RIVER is told through the points of view of Gwen, Sam, and Gwen’s children, which provides each of their unique perspectives. There is no shortage of action in this installment due to the enormous number of people setting their sights, literally and figuratively, on Gwen and her loved ones. I believed this series was originally set to be a trilogy, but a fourth book, BITTER FALLS, is in the works, and WOLFHUNTER RIVER provides a great set up to take the series in a new direction. Each book in the series stands on its own and delves deep into the hearts of the characters as well as providing an engaging plot. Watching Lanny and Conner develop and grow into their own people is a treat. I look forward to continuing the journey with this great series.
Thanks to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the opportunity to experience this book in advance of its release.
*Please note that my review is based on uncorrected text.
Thank you NetGalley and Thomas & #38 Mercer for this arc.
While I've read Stillhouse Lake and enjoyed it, I've skipped over # 2 of this series and Wolfhunter River is book three. This was just silly. A compulsive read, but silly. Over. The. Top. It felt like an Arnold Schwarzenegger movie all the way through. And I'm sure that was the writer's intention. Oh, and she probably also wanted to enrage the entire population of Tennessee.
If a pure escapist, very fast paced read is your thing with ridiculously steroidal characters and a plethora of evil and incestuous cast of characters doing BAD things is what you're looking for, the Wolfhunter River will not disappoint. It even has a fairy tale, happily-ever-after ending.
Wolfhunter River is book #3 in this riveting thriller series with Gwen Proctor, ex-wife of the notorious serial killer, Melvin Royal. I've now read all three books back to back and couldn't put them down!
You'd think Gwen's troubles would be over now that Mel is dead and buried but she and her family are still the brunt of online vigilantes, conspiracy theorists and other crazies, including the wealthy mother of one of Mel's victims who has decided to film a tell-all documentary about the victims and their deaths. It doesn't help that live-in boyfriend Sam Cade has had a relationship with this woman which he would prefer to keep secret from Gwen.
The plot of this novel is a little complicated and is maybe stretching things a little when Gwen gets pulled into helping a teenaged girl accused of murdering her mother in the isolated small town of Wolfhunter, TN. Gwen has only met these two women by phone but drags her whole family there to investigate. Lots of action keep the plot moving along though and seems to be setting the stage for Gwen to become a licensed investigator in future books in the series, which is all right by me. Gwen is feisty and smart and I've come to really like her and her family so I'm looking forward to reading more.
I received an arc of this new thriller from the publisher via NetGalley for my honest review and I'm grateful for the opportunity. Reading the series from the beginning is a must. All are very exciting.
Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy. I loved her first two books, but was underwhelmed by this 3rd. The plot seemed odd, though it did pick up about halfway through and at the end. Would definitely read another of her books since the first two of this series were great.
this is the 3rd book in this series. While the author does an excellent job of bring the reader into the series (you do not need to read the previous books) 'I do recommend reading them in order because the story line is so intense you don't want to miss any of it. The story is about the ex-wife of a serial killer and how she fights to protect her family from people who wan to destroy them because they think she was his partner in crime. there is also the element of other psychopaths that want to continue his work and seek revenge for her husband. She has changed her name and moved to a small town to avoid the people that hunt her but they find her anyway. Another group of people who find themselves in bad situation also reach out to her which brings more notoriety to her. the story is complicated and has many twists that you you do not see coming. A very bloody and dark mystery that I could not put down. Each book is better than the last.
Wolfhunter River is the third in Ms. Caine's Stillhouse Lake series, and while I think it can be read as a standalone novel, you'd be best served reading the first two in the series.
Gwen Proctor is still recovering from the chaos and pain her serial-killer ex, Melvin Royal, inflicted on her and her children. Life is finally starting to calm down ... until the mother of one of Melvin's victims ambushes her during a TV interview designed to set the record straight and announces she intends to make a documentary exposing Gwen, increasing the frenzy of the internet mob Gwen and her kids have been dealing with for years. Only this time, Miranda Tidewell actually does have information that could end Gwen's world as she knows it. Add to that, a series of letters that come from beyond the grave and you think you know where we're going. But you don't. Not really. Not this time.
This time, when a call comes in from someone who needs her help, Gwen's first instinct is to ignore it. Until a second call comes from the woman's daughter and Gwen, her partner, Sam and their two kids are on the road to Wolfhunter River. Immediately, they stumble into a mess that includes a kidnapped child, missing women, corrupt cops, an unassuming and inept lawyer and a coverup of massive proportions. Once again, Gwen must fight to protect herself, her kids, her partner, and her life as she knows it - and she does it with all the ferocity we've come to expect from the series.
Wolfhunter River is told mostly in Gwen and Sam's voices, though we do hear from the perspective of both kids - tough, lovesick Lanny and smart, tech-savvy Connor. I enjoy that touch. These kids are downright likable, and while there was a little bit much going on for my liking with separate yet intersecting plots, Wolfhunter River is a quick and enjoyable read and a great way to (hopefully!) introduce a new arc to one of my all-time favorite characters.
If you've never read any of the series, I suggest you get started. You won't be disappointed!
Thank you to Thomas & Mercer, along with Netgalley, for providing this book in exchange for my honest review.
