I have been highly anticipating this third installment of one of my all time favorite serial killer thriller series... And this might just have been the problem, because while I still highly enjoyed my time with Wolfhunter River, I don't think the story actually lives up to the first two books. I'll try to explain why without giving away any spoilers. The first thing I wasn't 100% convinced about was the plot. I'm not saying it's a bad plot and there are definitely fireworks and a lot of action and violence involved, but the first part of the story went on too long about previous events and the Wolfhunter part was a little too much for me to consider it completely believable. Plot twists, flying bullets, conspiracy theories, a kidnapped little girl, a shady town... There is a lot going on and having all of this linked with Gwen Proctor and her family can get a little too much. The whole Lost Angels and secret past element is something that can go both ways for you, because if you think about it it can come over as a bit cliche. The writing is mostly on fire though and once I was past the first few chapters and the focus turned to Wolfhunter, I dropped everything I was doing and kept turning those pages to see how things would end. While I did started to doubt the credibility of it all and some things were just a little too farfetched to be believable (and the ending was just too convenient of a wrap up), Wolfhunter River was still a very entertaining ride with a lot of promise for the next book.
You can’t run from your past. In today’s world of instant communication lies spread faster than the truth. In this third installment we see Gwen still doing whatever she can to stem the tide of hate and protecting her children. She is starting to let others in when a ghost from the past returns. To escape Gwen takes on someone else’s problems and we are caught up in the whirlwind that is Gwen’s life. This is a terrifically twisted tale that will keep you guessing and flipping pages through the very end.
Wolfhunter River is the third book in the Stillhouse Lake series. I finished the first two books feeling satisfied, and confused that there was going to be a third book. It seemed Gwen’s story had reached its conclusion and I felt there was no reason to return to the series.
Wolfhunter River sets us back into Gwen Proctor’s life, where she continues to face harassment. It makes sense that the events of the second book wouldn’t fix everything. But I allowed myself to hope that after the end of the second book everything would be somewhat okay. Wolfhunter River brings us into a new conflict after Gwen receives a mysterious phone call that set us on new adventures. Through all this Gwen and her family continue to face the harassment they did in the first two books. While I do concede there is some realism to this, it has worn thin on me. I wish it was not such a prominent part of the story. I love reading about Gwen, Lanny, Connor and Sam. These characters brought me back to this world with a sense of excitement I don’t usually feel for series. I wish that the story got started a lot faster.
I had a good time reading once we got to Wolfhunter River, but the book didn’t manage to grip me until the final third. Which unfortunately was too little too late. I felt that the book opened with such a strong prologue, except the plot relevant to the prologue isn’t in the forefront of this book at all.
Even though this book is my least favourite in the series (and I still think it could have stayed a duology) I do look forward to reading Rachel Caine’s next entry. This book does a good job of setting up where we will go from here.
Thank you to Netgalley for supplying a copy of this book for review.
Gwen Proctor is trying to start her life over after the death of her serial killer husband but everybody is not convinced of her innocence and one of them is her husband’s victims mother who is producing a documentary to prove Gwen’s guilt. If that was not enough Gwen ends up at Wolfhunter River trying to help a caller's daughter find out who murdered her mother.
Wolfhunter River is the third book in the Stillhouse Lake series by Rachel Caine. It’s a fast-paced and well written book and though not as suspenseful as the other two it's very addictive and hard to put down.Looking forward to reading the next one in this highly entertaining series
I would like to thank Thomas Mercer & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

Gwen has finally escaped her serial killer husband and saved her kids, but she can’t outrun his notoriety. There are people all over the Internet sending her hate mail seeking to avenge the crimes that they believe she helped him commit. Hiding is no longer an answer because Gwen wants a normal life for her two children. Now all of a sudden a woman from Wolfhunter River has reached out to Gwen, scared to death about something that is happening in her town. But when Gwen gets to the town, the woman is dead and her daughter is being prosecuted for the crime. Marlene wasn’t afraid of her daughter, but it may be too late to save her. A trap has been laid and it may trap all those that Gwen loves.
I enjoy these Stillhouse Lake novels and seeing how Gwen and her family are coping after all that they have been through. Gwen is such a wrong and resilient woman and she is raising two strong children who deserve a normal life, but this novel isn’t of them settling down and becoming normal. I loved how this novel was just as much about this new town and their criminals than about people trying to get even with Gwen because they believe she is guilty. There are so many characters in this novel that I loved to hate and I wanted to see punished for their crimes. I adored Gwen, Sam and the kids in this novel and how strong their relationships with each other are. The kids are so smart and know what to do to survive in this tough new world. I liked how this novel wasn’t just through Gwen’s perspective and you could see how their pasts were affecting what was going on in this day. The last dozen chapters were so action packed that I couldn’t put it down because I needed to know what was going to happen to this family and if they were going to find this little girl! I would definitely recommend picking this up!
Out April 23rd!
3 stars!

Wolfhunter River is an intense and fast-paced Mystery read and a good addition to the series. The character development is still quite strong in this installment, especially as it splits the focus between Gwen and Sam as main characters, and the eerie atmosphere makes this a very tense read. There is still some action, as well as the ever present threat of Melvin, but the main mystery this time around is a bit underwhelming.
Rachel Caine’s writing is engrossing and very compelling. Gwen and Sam’s struggles are packed with so much emotion that you can’t help but feel for them as characters. The novel adds even more complexity to the overreaching series arc and introduces more elements and characters to the mystery surrounding Melvin and his fans.
Eh. I love Gwen and Sam and the kids, and I do have to say that this book brings in quite a few very intriguing elements to their stories. Their connection through Melvin and his crimes continues to become even more tangled up, and there is one particular plot twist in the second half that really hammers that in. It’s very well done and I love how Caine explores that aspect of the story.
The thing is that the Wolfhunter mystery, which also shares the focus on this novel, isn’t all that fleshed out and reads are pretty far fetched. The motivation behind Gwen going to Wolfhunter isn’t all that developed to feel like a strong course of action she’d take, considering her life and what she’s going through, so it’s difficult to connect to that part of the story.
This is a very quick read, though. The fast pace and intense character-driven chapters keep you flipping pages. There’s always this lingering sense of tension surrounding Gwen that translates really well to her inner monologue. Same can be said for Sam and the conflicts he’s facing. I’m really curious to see what’s next for them in the next book.
Overall, Wolfhunter River is a good and fast read with complex characters and quite a few important plot reveals. The series arc gets more development, but the mystery in the novel could’ve been more fleshed out. Still recommend it to all Mystery fans and I’m really curious to see what’s to come!
A young girl is kidnapped, betrayed by someone who is supposed to protect her. Gwen Proctor, formerly Gina Royal is doing the best to create a normal life for her children after the death of her serial killer ex-husband, Melvin. Somehow even though he is dead, Melvin continues to interrupt their lives. She doesn’t know how she would survive without Sam Cade, her lover and brother of one of Melvin’s victims. When after lengthy discussions and promises made, Gwen agrees to appear on a show about her ex-husband. She wants to make clear, to those who are still interested in persecuting her and her children, that they knew nothing about his evil other life. As things go out of control, Gwen realizes that she has been ambushed by the show. Has she made things worse for her family? Gwen receives a plea for help from a woman in Wolfhunter, but arrives too late. Has Gwen been set up? What happened to the young girl that was kidnapped, is she still alive? Will Gwen be able to protect and save her children? A wonderful third book in this captivating series by Ms. Caine. This is the third installment of the Stillhouse Lake series. After the second book, I wasn't expecting to be another one. But then Miss Caine go ahead and add a third one. Not that I'm complaning.
I was actually so excited when I found out. I feel so invested with Gwen's story. But I also know it will be hard to surpass the first two books. It started real slow took a long time to pick up. But once it did, I was engrossed. It is action-packed and full of suspense. There's also few surprising twists and turns that I really appreciate. The ending certainly make up for the slow start. Emotional, gripping, and definitely worth the read.
**Thank you NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I had high hopes for Wolfhunter River but I was left slightly disappointed. The beginning is what killed it for me. It did not hold the same creepiness that Stillhouse Lake started with. I remember reading Stillhouse Lake and feeling the goosebumps grow on my arms because of how drawn in I was to Gwen's life. Wolfhunter River felt slow and uneventful up until the last quarter of the book. I also wish there would have been a stronger character presence. With that being said, I was happy with the ending. Things picked up, Gwen, Sam, Lanny, and Conner all begin playing stronger roles and I especially enjoyed Conner and the added emotion he brings. Overall, I was not blown away and really felt like Rachel Caine could had stepped it up. So sad, because Stillhouse Lake was absolutely amazing.
I remember really liking the first two of the series but I worried that I would have trouble picking up easily where it left off (it’s been a while)... No fear, after a few pages I was right back there with Gwen, Sam, Lanny and Connor. This is some good writing and the characters are great.
I was curious how exactly the kidnapped child, Ellie, was going play out and if it would tie in with Gwen. The story unfolds slowly, though not painfully, so be patient. A lot of other horrible things precede the real action. There are plenty of healthy family meals cooked and mother/daughter runs to get through😉. They end up in one crazy town and the locals are something else!
I was wondering while reading this if this would be the final installment? My reason for this thinking is that how many times can you take this woman/family and stick them in peril and have it be believable or continue to have it be fresh and entertaining?? Well, get to the ending and you will find out. I didn’t expect that and am quite happy as this series has been really enjoyable so far and I look forward to the next!
Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Thomas & Mercer for a copy in exchange for a review.
I loved this book! I fell in love with book 1 and couldnt get enough of Gwen's story. Book two was a slight let down for me, it just wasn't AS good at book 1. This book completely redeemed itself, I liked this almost as much as book one. I can't wait for more Gwen.
The tension didn’t die with Melvin Royal, that’s for sure. Even without him as the main antagonist, the atmosphere of being hunted remains.
There’s a lot going on but I think it’s setting the tone for what the rest of the series is going to be, without Melvin. I enjoy the direction it’s going. I’m sure the fallout from the past will still keep following Gwen but it would be nice to see the author move slowly away from that as the main plot point. Even in Wolfhunter, it got to be a little worn out and repetitive. Those threats will always loom but I like that it doesn’t look like it will be the central focus anymore.
I look forward to seeing where the next installment goes. Also looking forward to seeing what other bodies of water the author can use in the title.
I loved this suspenseful continuation of Gwen’s story with Sam and her children! I initially thought it was going to be an extension of the problems with her ex-husband but was pleasantly surprised to see a whole new story line! I love her strength and grit and undying protection of her loved ones! It is also great to read a book with such a strong female lead!
It’s hard to write a trilogy with the same basic characters and have them be based on the same basic plot but still have the story feel fresh and exciting. Caine absolutely succeeds at her craft and Wolfhunter River may have been my favorite book of the trilogy. Packed with action, real emotion, and several storylines, this was hard to put down. Caine did a great job by flashing back just enough to the prior novels to jog the reader’s memory without retelling the prior stories. I withheld a higher rating mostly for personal preference. I enjoy more realistic thrillers and felt that the Stillhouse Lake series was often over the top and completely implausible. That being said, they were all thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining reads!

I really enjoyed Wolfhunter River. I liked how fast paced it was, it kept me interesting in reading it. I also, really enjoyed that Rachel Caine tied the book up nicely, but left it so there could be another book in the series. Which I hope there is!
This is a good thriller but I much preferred the first two books. However, this is a transitional book, so it’s not going to be as good. It is an enjoyable book with lots of interesting character developments.
The first two books in this series were amazing. Full of tension, suspense, intrigue and mystery. Everything wrapped up nice and neat at the end of book 2, so I was a bit surprised when I saw there was going to be another book in the series.
You most definitely have to have read both previous books in this series before starting ‘Wolfhunter River’. Especially if you want to really understand everything the characters have been through so far in their lives.
‘Wolfhunter River’ picks up about 6 months after ‘Killman Creek’. Gwen, Sam and the kids are trying to move on with their lives. And Gwen has started helping other women who are seeking her help and advice regarding their own awful situations.
This helping other women is what leads Gwen, Sam and the kids to the small remote town of Wolfhunter, where nothing is as it seems.
While I didn’t love this book as fiercely as I did for books 1 and 2 in series, it was still a good read. I enjoyed it. A solid 3.5 stars from me.
Elle White survived a marriage to a serial killer, but there are still people out there who think she was a part of her husbands crimes. A Mother of one of the victims is determined to bring Elle and her children down, no matter what it takes. Elle receives a cryptic call from a woman asking for help, claiming she will be killed because of what she knows. Elle is reluctant to get involved, it could be a trap. When the woman dies Elle feels compelled to find out what happened. She enters a world of evil all around her. She doesn’t know who to trust.
This is a great read. It is filled with suspense. I found myself getting angry on Elle’s behalf for all she has gone thru in her life. I literally couldn’t stop turning the pages. I couldn’t figure out how the book was going to end. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
I received this ARC for an honest review. This was a new series to me. I heard about it, but never read it. I know it’s silly to start a series in the third book. I only got through the first chapter. Even though I was following the story line without any problems, I had to read the first two. I LOVED what I was reading. This is a unique story. I read the first two in two days.
This series is about Gwen Proctor, Sam Cade, & Gwen’s two children Lanny and Connor. They are survivors of Gwen’s ex-husband who was a serial killer. Not going to give details BECAUSE YOU HAVE TO READ THIS SERIES! In this book, Gwen keeps getting phone calls for help from women who are in difficult situations (Not giving you more. Read the book) The latest call asking for help comes from a 15yr old girl whose mom called the day before and was found murdered. The police is pinning the murder on the daughter. Gwen feels guilty for not helping the mother so she goes to Wolfhunter Creek to help the daughter. A lot happens which I’m not going to tell you. YOU MUST READ THE BOOK!
This series really pulls you in and you go through so much with the charters. I am so happy I gave this series a chance, and I can’t wait for the next one.
