I've been hearing a lot of buzz about this book since it first released in the UK and was thriller to find it here on NetGalley.

Steve Cavanagh has written the untilnate thriller. A serial killer has managed to get himself on the jury for a trial of an innocent man. The plot twists in this book are exceptional; the writing brilliant.

Can't recommend this book highly enough.

I love a good courtroom drama and this is an excellent one! It dragged me right in with that dramatic tagline on the cover that tells us that 'The serial killer isn't on trial. HE'S ON THE JURY' and kept me guessing as to who he could be right up to the end.

This is the fourth novel in this series lawyer-writer Steve Cavanagh featuring defense lawyer Eddie Flynn. It also works well as a stand alone novel without that feeling that you should have read the earlier episodes. Eddie Flynn is a great character, a defense lawyer with a heart and an instinct for telling truth from lies. An ex-con artist, Eddie believes that a good cross examination requires the same three stages as a good con, and luckily for the people he defends, he just happens to be expert at both.

As a result of his previous skill in handling police called to give testimony, Eddie has been asked to join the team defending celebrity actor Robert Solomon accused of murdering his actress wife and his security guard. They were found murdered together in bed in the Solomons apartment and the evidence pointing at Robert having murdered them in a fit of rage is strong. However, after talking to him Eddie believes Robert's claim that he is innocent and has been set up, but has no idea why someone would want to do that. They'll also be up against one of the most powerful and successful prosecutors in New York so Eddie will have to be very smart if he is to find the weaknesses in the evidence.

Interwoven with this fascinating courtroom drama, are the moves being made by the serial killer to infiltrate and influence the composition of the jury. It's intriguing to see how he is able to do this and also to speculate as to why he want to. I found this a refreshingly original crime thriller and was totally engaged in both the courtroom drama and the mystery of the serial killer. Needless to say, I will definitely be seeking out more of Cavanagh's works in the future!

This follows two perspectives - Kane, a disconnected serial killer her feels no pain, and Eddie Flynn, a lawyer with a seedy past. Flynn takes on the case of Bobby Soloman, a popular actor who has been accused of murdering his wife and head of security. Kane makes his way on to the jury as his past as a killer is slowly revealed and Flynn himself is trying to figure out what really happened to the wife and head of security.
I was really hooked by the premise of this and the first few chapters, but it started to drag a bit after that. I think it probably could have afforded to be about 50 pages shorter. I was intrigued enough by the premise to continue reading, but didn't enjoy it as much as I thought I would. I seem to be the odd one out with this opinion though so would definitely still recommend checking it out!

I’m not too much into courtroom thrillers, but this one pulled me in! And the idea that the killer is on the jury is just genius! This book was the kind you don’t want to put down! I spent a day and half reading it and I’m still blown away! So many twists and turns but not the typical kind. This book is smart! And if you’re smart, you’ll read it! Such a good weekend read!

Thirteen is a fast paced legal thriller that I could not put down. This is my first Steve Cavanagh book and I did not know that it is actually the #4 Eddie Flynn book. I enjoyed discovering the former con artist turned defense lawyer with a heart of gold, Eddie Flynn. Eddie takes on a high-profile celebrity double murder case and attempts to catch a killer in order to prove his client's innocence and before more innocent victims are killed. The plot is original, the characters flawed but relate-able, and the story telling is first rate in crime fiction. If you are a fan of John Grisham, Michael Connelly, or Scott Turow, I highly recommend this book. Now I must go back and read the other three Eddie Flynn books.

⭐️Book Review ⭐️
TH1RT3EN by Steven Cavanagh
4/5 Stars

**I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley and Flatiron Books in exchange for an honest review.** Pub Date 8/13/2019

I was really excited about this book and anticipated a page gripping, all nighter suspense. I was a bit let down when it was predictable up to one twist at the very end. I admit I was hooked and couldn’t put it down until the very last page.

Eddie Flynn is a former con artist. His wife and daughter left him and now he’s trying to make it right as a defense attorney. Now comes the role of a lifetime into lap- as a prosecutor for the trial of the century.

Movie Star actor, Robert Solomon; is accused of killing his actress wife and their head of security in their bed. He looks guilty as hell with all the evidence against him. Yet Eddie is convinced Solomon is innocent.

Could Solomon have been set up? Can you safeguard the innocent? How close is the real killer?

Thirteen is the finds ex conman Eddie Flynn taking on the case of Bobby Solomon, a Hollywood actor accused of murdering his new wife and his head of security. We also see the trial unfold through the eyes of serial killer Josh Kane, who has managed to be on the jury. Kane thinks this is the perfect way to get away with murder. As the book unfolds we see how the courtroom scenes as well as the investigation plays out.

I really enjoyed this one. It had excellent pacing and good character development. You really got a bit of insight into what the mind of a serial killer may be like. The characters were so well written thag you grew to care about Eddie and Bobby. Although this is #4 in a series, it read as a stand alone. The plot was very intriguing, and i would highly recommend this one.

My appreciation to Flatiron books and Netgalley for gifting me an e-copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review.

Wow! Absolutely brilliant. This is the first book I have read by this author but it most definitely won’t be the last. If you’re not immediately drawn in by the front cover, the first page will do the trick. Well written, and captivating, Th1rt3en follows a killer through his cunning game of hide and seek but his hiding place is in plain sight and in a spot no one has thought to ever pay attention to. With chilling plot twists this is a story you don’t want to pass up.

How could you not want to read this book after reading the teaser on the cover? I was definitely pulled in by this story and it did not disappoint!

Very creative plot, equally fascinating characters and a perfect read for those that love court room dramas/murder mysteries.

I didn’t even realize this book is the fourth in a series because it definitely stands alone on its own.

Such an adrenaline rush- loved every minute of it!

Thanks Netgalley for my copy.

Serial killer Joshua Kane is so deviously intelligent, he murders a victim, frames another target for the crime, and then wrangles his way onto the jury by disposing of a potential juror and then cleverly impersonating that person, hiding in plain sight under a fake identity, all while insuring a guilty verdict in the murder trial by influencing the other jurors. However, this time Kane runs into defense attorney Eddie Flynn, who finds holes in the evidence and adds probable doubt to the prosecutor’s case. Will there be a guilty verdict, or can the outcome be even more deadly?
Cavanagh weaves a spectacular courtroom tale, and he turns something that sounds far fetched into something completely plausible. If you are a fan of courtroom drama, this is a must read, One of the best books I’ve ever read, I most highly recommend Thirteen.

If you like courtroom dramas, you will enjoy THIRTEEN.

“It’s the murder trial of the century. And Joshua Kane has killed to get the best seat in the house – and to be sure the wrong man goes down for the crime. Because this time, the killer isn’t on trial. He’s on the jury. But there’s someone on his tail. Former-conman-turned-criminal-defense-attorney Eddie Flynn doesn’t believe that his movie-star client killed two people. He suspects that the real killer is closer than they think – but who would guess just how close?”

The author has created a clever premise that zips along with a well-crafted plot. Take a flawed hero, a suitably manipulative villain. Add some nicely paced curveballs, a touch of Hollywood, place the killer on the jury and presto – a fun read with twisty bits galore!

Did not finish; as a part of a series this just did not appeal to me. I was not engaged by the beginning of the book. Was disappointed as I’ve heard about this title a lot.

This is the best legal thriller I’ve read in a very long time. The concept of a killer being on the jury for a murder he committed was intriguing from the onset, and the author pulled off the premise without resorting to anything too absurd to explain it away (you will, of course, need to suspend your disbelief somewhat, but it actually all works). This alone would have made Thirteen memorable, but there was so much more to love about this book.

The characters were compelling, well-rounded, and flawed in ways that made it hard not to relate to them and their struggles. The trial scenes avoided the typical issue that plagues many legal thrillers by keeping a nice pace that was always interesting, never boring.

The only part of this book that could have been better was the revelation of Bobby’s secret. Not only did I see it coming a mile away but the industry’s reaction to it just wouldn’t be that harsh anymore. Things have changed.

Aside from that one quibble, I loved this book. It’s so good, in fact, that I stayed up half the night reading the first 60% and finished the rest the next day. This is the type of book that causes a reader to carry their Kindle with them everywhere; I read while walking, while cooking, etc. because I couldn’t put it down.

The biggest reveal of the book was totally shocking. The author fooled me completely, which is something that doesn’t happen very often. Excellent premise, great writing, and overall just a damn good story. If you like legal thrillers, you’ll love this one.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing a copy of this book. This review contains my honest, unbiased opinion.

I normally wouldn't jump into the middle of a series but I had been hearing such good things about this one I decided to take the plunge without reading the previous novels first. Thankfully, this book can easily be read as a standalone novel. I was quite impressed with this legal thriller and wouldn't mind going back and reading the other books as Eddie Flynn is an intriguing character.

The rave reviews and the premise for this one are really what sold me. Instead of the killer being on trial, he has managed to work his way onto the jury. A hotshot movie star has been accused of murdering two people, including his wife and lawyer Eddie Flynn has been hired as part of the defense team. The story goes back and forth between Eddie and the killer, Joshua Kane.

The story is kinda brilliant because you think you know what's going on but just about everything you thought was fact ends up getting tweaked a bit. The last quarter or so of the book, it was one thing after another that kept catching me off guard. The pacing was excellent and was probably helped by both Eddie and Joshua moving the story along with their perspectives.

Definitely recommend if you enjoy legal thrillers. I'm not surprised to see author Michael Connelly has endorsed this novel and I think if you like his books, you'll probably enjoy this series as well.

This book is part 4 is a series.

Eddie Flynn is a ex-conman turned lawyer, who is very successful in practicing the law but in an unorthodox way. Flynn gets tricked into representing a big Hollywood star, who is on trial for killing his wife and bodyguard. Flynn believes in his innocence and can't walk away from the case.
Even before the trial starts there are a lot of twists and turns, and they keep going throughout the book. The real killer, a serial killer, is on the jury and does whatever it takes to get the star convicted.

The book is fast paced and you don't need a lot of information from the previous three books.
The perspective of the killer was an interesting touch, but still kept you guessing to what really happened.

I don't read legal thrillers very often, but Thirteen was good. Short, interesting, and to-the-point, though I only got really interested in it around the 35% mark. It was cool how readers knew the biggest plot twist (murderer being in the jury) from the get-go.

The description of this book is what caught my eye and it did not disappoint. It was a perfect legal thriller that had me guessing until the very end. The forensic evidence was fascinating to me and you could tell the author did his research. I had not read any previous books from this author but I will go back and read the previous books on Eddie Flynn. Thank you netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review! #thirteen #netgalley

This not usually my type of genre but WOW. Captivated me right from the start. Couldn’t put it down. Give it a 5 star

This is my first read by Steven Cavanagh and while Thirteen is considered part of a series, it was easily read as a stand alone. Eddie Flynn is a former con artist turned lawyer who takes on a high profile murder case defending a famous Hollywood actor. Joshua Kane is a highly intelligent serial killer that selects victims whose lives have recently fallen on good fortune. There is a method behind Kane's madness and what better way to relish the kill than to strategically work your way onto the jury that will convict the innocent victim Kane selects to take the fall.

Thirteen takes us inside the mind of a meticulous killer while he plots to manipulate his fellow jurors into convicting the actor on trial. The legal action provides many twists to keep the reader engrossed in the trial as well as what the killer's next move will be. Thirteen is a compelling, gripping, legal thriller that will have you speculating until the final page.!
