Wow! What a suspenseful, twisty ride! I love a good serial killer story and this one was great. Part courtroom drama, part police procedural, part thriller, it kept me up all night because I literally couldn’t put it down.
Told in alternating perspectives between Eddie Flynn, conman-turned-lawyer, and the killer, there was lots of action & gore, and it kept me guessing til the very end. This is 4th in a series, but very much a stand alone story that didn’t require reading of the others to fully enjoy. But you can bet I’m going to go back & read all of them now!

I stopped reading it once the author says the veteran detective charged a prostitute with drug possession because she wouldn’t give him a freebie. Trash.

An excellent, unique courtroom thriller. I enjoyed it even though I hadn't read the previous books in the series.

Excellent book with twisty roads and fast-paced tension
My first read of this series however, no problem as a stand-alone book
Clever and fun, bit of suspension of disbelief

I got an eARC thanks to NetGalley. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It was a quick read that hooked me from the beginning. And kept me guessing to the end. I thought I figured out pieces, only to find I was totally wrong! I loved Eddie Flynn’s character. The writing is engaging and fast paced. I’m not usually a fan of crime dramas but this was a major win for me. All around a great read. I want to read the others in this series now!

I had a hard time getting into this one but I am glad I stuck it out. Brilliantly plotted this story keeps the reader on their toes. There are so many shocks in this one. The plot is intense and unique. The procedural parts add to the story without being dry. This one kept my attention until the conclusion. I would definitely read this author again.

I don’t usually read legal thrillers but after reading the discription something caught me. I just had to read this one. And wow...this was amazing. So many twists I was nearly dizzy by the end.

Eddie Flynn is a defence lawyer. He use to be a conman so he’s got more up at his sleeve than your usual lawyers. He is one sneaky little bastard. His new client is a famous actor, Bobby Solomon who is accused of murdering 2 people. Flynn is sure he is innocent. Someone set him up. But who? And why?
The who part is known from the start. Joshua Kane.
One of the most important questions is will Flynn be able to prove Solomon’s innocence? And could he find the real killer?

This was intense. I really liked that Steve Cavanagh gave Kane his own chapters. His guilt was known but there were still plenty of surprises regarding him. His character is well developed and you get to know him, his past too as the story goes on. I rarely meet in books with his kind of evil. He is kind of remind me of Hannibal Lecter.

Eddie Flynn is interesting because of his past as a conman, how he still uses the skills he picked up. I wasn’t really interested in his private life, I felt those parts unreleted to the story.

Many thanks to NetGalley, Flatiron Books for my copy and Steve Cavanagh for his gripping story that kept me up well into the nights.

Wow! This book was amazing. I rarely read courtroom/legal thrillers - no particular reason its just I'm not normally drawn to them but the synopsis for this book just had me so intrigued! "The Serial Killer is not on trial - he's on the Jury" - How fascinating does that sound!!. I didn't know that this was the 4th book of a series when i picked this book out - I normally don't like reading series out of order but this one was perfectly fine to read - I wasn't lost - i think the only thing i may have missed was a little bit of Eddie Flynn's past history but the author did an excellent job of recapping things. This book was such a thrilling read. I recommend it highly especially for those who love a good courtroom or legal thriller. I give this book 4.5 stars!

Thirteen is my first Steve Cavanaugh book but it certainly will not be my last.
What attracted me to this book was the cover and the tag line The serial killer isn’t on trial, he’s on the jury jumped right out at me and I just knew I had to read it and was so pleased I got the chance. I was gripped from start to finish.
Although this is the fourth book in the series, I really did not feel at a lose and feel it can be easily read as a stand alone although I will be reading the other three as I can not get enough.
It was full of twists and turns which really kept me on my toes and my theories always proved wrong keeping me wanting more and sitting on the edge of my seat.
I feel the characters were well written.
Fantastically written thriller and would recommend it highly.

Thanks to NetGalley and Flatiron press.
Take a seat buckle up and press the accelerator to the floor and welcome to Eddie Flynn a pugnacious, brash, emotionally shaky character who never takes anything as a given. This exciting story builds and builds carrying the reader along with turns at every chapter.
An extremely well crafted story by Steve Cavanagh kept me guessing to the final page. Thanks for the ride.

A fresh and unique spin on a "serial killer thriller". A gritty, intense, fast-paced, riveting, artful melding of stunning psychological thrills and nail-biting suspense. An edgy mystery full of dark secrets, shocking plot twists and pulse-pounding, palpable tension. This book brings it!

t’s the murder trial of the century. And Joshua Kane has killed to get the best seat in the house – and to be sure the wrong man goes down for the crime. Because this time, the killer isn’t on trial. He’s on the jury.

But there’s someone on his tail. Former-conman-turned-criminal-defense-attorney Eddie Flynn doesn’t believe that his movie-star client killed two people. He suspects that the real killer is closer than they think – but who would guess just how close?

This was one excellent mystery. I was in for the all-night read. One one the best mysteries I have read.

Thank you, NetGalley for the advance copy for review.

This book. Wow. What a thriller. The plot twists surprised me. I'm not normally one that will choose a police crime thriller but the synopsis is what sucked me in. The detail that went into writing this is impeccable. I'm thankful that I was able to receive an ARC of this.

What a devilishly delightful premise! I hung on every suspenseful word and couldn't press the "page forward" button on my Kindle fast enough. If you're looking for an intelligently written story with emotionally rough terrain, this may be exactly what you're looking for. Won't be the last book I read by Mr. Cavanagh...definitely recommended.

Thirteen is a solid 3 star read for me. A crime/legal thriller that while interesting, wasnt outstanding. Hard drinking, rough around the edges defense attorney, cliched "bad cops", and steadfast judge. Lots of twists.

I received an ARC from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for my honest review.

Th1rt3en by Steve Cavanagh is a really good thriller with an amazing tag line, The Serial Killer is not on trial, he's on the jury, that made me have to read it. This novel reminded me of the early James Patterson novels, when he was really good and wrote stuff by himself and did not have ghost writers. The novel has short chapters making it easy to digest and keep reading. The descriptions are just right enough to give you a mind picture. The twists and plot is very clever, there's a couple twist at the end that I didn't see coming, but was pleasantly surprised. This novel is the fourth in the series, but this is the first one that I have read, I would've preferred to read it in order, but I didn't feel I missed much and was caught up in Eddie Flynn's life very fast. A huge thanks for Netgalley and Flatiron books for letting me read an advanced copy of this novel in exchange for my honest thoughts on it. This novel is released on August 13 of 2019.

The Plot: Kane is a serial killer that is good with costumes and mimicry, when he's first introduced he's a homeless man with an agenda, we're not clear on what his total agenda is but we know he 's stalking a mailman who delivers and receives packages from the court house. Kane's real agenda isn't the mailman, but the package from the courthouse, mainly the jury summons for a very important case. The case is one that is making headlines, involving Robert Solomon a famous movie star that is tried for killing his newly bride and their bodyguard who where found murdered in bed with their clothes off. Robert Solomon claims innocence and that he was not there when the murders take place. Eddie Flynn is a con man turned lawyer, that still uses his con man skills to win cases, his recent case was exposing police negligence as it arrested a client without grounds, in this case he has started a war with the police. That last case is why he's hired as a attorney assisting the big boy's of Carp law and associates, to go after the cops for negligence when a piece of evidence , a dollar, is collected from the mouth of one of the victims, which Robert's DNA and the DNA of a serial killer that was executed. Kane gets on the jury determined to make Robert guilty by any means necessary. With the deck stacked against Eddie Flynn can he give Robert a fair trail.

What I Liked: The plot is really focused, and there's no parts that I found boring or dragged. The twist will have you on the edge of your seat, there's more than a few that were really clever, and twist I did not see coming. The character's were written really well, the serial killer if you give into the narrative established that he studies and mimics peoples action and voice works well and is established early. The courtroom procedure worked really well and held my attention. The narrative of flipping back and forth between Kane and Eddie really worked and gave new perspective to the scenes.

What I Disliked: The serial killer's motive didn't seem to work for me totally, the killing of people who's life had wind falls worked better than the 13 colonies thing, that was never really explained well enough. There's flashbacks but they don't reveal this obsession which I felt was needed. The dirty cops I felt were a little to sloppy with there plan to be on the force as long they had.

Recommendations: Despite this novel's few flaws I really enjoyed it and recommend reading it. I'm a fan of James Patterson's early work with Kiss the Girls and Along Came A Spider, and I think this fits right in, In those novels you know who the killer is, The flow is really fast, and the Twist are really good and jaw dropping. I plan of going back and reading the other three novels of the Eddie Flynn character, I enjoyed it that much. I rated this novel 5 out of 5 stars, there's minor flaws but this novel really worked for me and was a lot of fun.

Wow, what a wonderful twisty legal thriller, with a great idea of how to frame someone, or is it? You can imagine the movie when you read this blockbuster. For all lovers of legal thrillers.

Intelligent isn't strong enough word for this truly brilliant and fast-paced read .. you will not see it coming! The author has gift for structuring things so you are sitting on the edge of your seat; further, characterizations are spot on. A man sitting in judgement on himself, hiding in plain sight. Ingenious, Stunning .. read it right away!!

The premise of this book is extremely intriguing! A murderer who is sitting on the jury for the murder trial of his victim. This is part of a series that follows one of the characters but it worked fine as a standalone.

I really enjoyed the story, there are a lot of courtroom scenes, which I'm always interested in. I also found the forensic information to be fascinating. There were plenty of twists and turns that I didn't see coming, the story definitely kept me on my toes!

Overall, this was an excellent thriller that I really enjoyed reading. I highly recommend it!

Thirteen is a chilling read. I enjoyed this court room thriller, although I did find it to be a bit far fetched at times. Although it is the 4th book in a series, it read fine as a stand alone. The story is one that is very hard to put down once you start and the mystery and tension builds to a satisfying close. You’ll want to grab a copy.
