Yes, yes, yes! This was the thriller I needed this week.
An amazing court drama that hooks you from the very start, Thirteen has so much mystery and thrilling moments to keep you engaged throughout. A one-sit read, I hadn't read the other books in the Eddie Flynn series but I'll be seeking them out now.
When actor Bobby Sullivan's wife and business manager are found dead, in his bed, he is the obvious suspect and is quickly arrested. His movie company is aghast at this development in their marketing of Sullivan and his latest movie and hires an expensive law firm to represent him.
Eddie Flynn isn't one of the city's expensive lawyers but he is effective and creative. When he is hired to be second chair, he sees a chance to be hired fulltime by the firm which will help him in his quest to reunite his family. As he learns about the case, he begins to believe that Bobby is innocent. When the law firm pulls out, Flynn becomes the lead attorney and is determined to do whatever it takes to free Sullivan.
But there is an adversary Flynn never suspected. A serial killer has been operating for years under the radar. His joy is in the killing but also in managing to get someone innocent found guilty for the killer's crimes. Sullivan is his latest case and this time the killer is upping the ante. Through devious maneuvers he manages to get himself on the jury where he gets a front row seat and can assure a guilty verdict. Can Flynn uncover the killer and prove Sullivan innocent?
Steve Cavanagh has written an intriguing and fascinating novel that is a mix of a legal thriller and a serial killer novel. Eddie Flynn is a sympathetic character and the reader will be pulling for him. The killer seems invincible and it is hard to see how he can lose. This book is recommended for mystery readers.
This took a conventional story line, murder trial and the jury, and added a new element. I liked that it was a fresh take on this typical story line, so I couldn't exactly guess how it was going to end.
The killer isn’t on trial, he’s on the jury! Wow. What a unique story. So many twists that really kept me guessing until the last page.
I really enjoyed this book! Very interesting concept and characters. I enjoyed the different points of views. This was a great take on a legal thriller!
Unfortunately, I did not have the opportunity to read/review this book due to other commitments. I will certainly update this review if/when I have the chance to read the book. Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the advance copy.
I received an advanced digital copy of this book from the author, publisher and Netgalley.com. Thanks to all for the opportunity to read and review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.
Mr. Cavanagh's book is a great balance of serial killer thriller/legal drama. While the premise was interesting and characters were well developed, the book dragged in parts. The novel is written very visually, almost like a movie script.
3 out of 5 stars.
I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars! I absolutely loved Thirteen and have recommended it to everyone I know. This is the perfect legal thriller and serial killer story rolled into one. I loved the character of Eddie Flynn and will definitely go back to read the first three installments in the series. The writing was gripping, the plot had me turning pages late into the night, and the conclusion was satisfying. I very highly recommend this book and can't wait for the next one from Steve Cavanagh!
A well written legal thriller, Thirteen is a superb read that keeps the reader turning pages. The research and the whole legal process along with the books plot and twists keep everything interesting.

Thank you to NetGallery and Flatiron Books for my ebook copy of this book. 😍😍 I was nervous to review a legal thriller because I’m pretty picky, but this one was a pleasant surprise!
Synopsis: Thirteen is a legal thriller told from dual perspectives - Eddie Flynn’s, a defense attorney who once made a living as a conman; and Joshua Kane’s, a murder who will do anything it takes to get on the jury of an upcoming trial. The trial is for a celebrity who allegedly killed his wife and head security guard. Is he just a good actor or is he as innocent as he claims? Eddie Flynn is determined to find out. Joshua Kane on the other hand, has other plans for this trial.
Pros: I loved that this book was told from two contrasting points of view. This made the good plot line even more interesting and helped build suspense. The courtroom scenes were artfully done as well as realistic, which was refreshing! I will say that this is one of the more graphic legal thrillers I’ve read, but it only added to story. The focus of this story wasn’t really on the characters, but that does not mean the author skimped on building quality, dynamic characters. Flynn especially was kind of a bad ass, and not the usual womanizer main character typically featured in legal thrillers.
Cons: While this book was deliciously fast-paced and filled with twists, I wanted to be more caught off guard. I was able to guess a good chunk of the ending, which is not necessarily a bad thing, but I needed more “WOW” factors. Other than that though, I was pleased with this book. From start to finish, I was hooked.
This is the fourth book in the series, but could be read as a stand alone. I had no problem following the story as I had not read any of the previous books. This was a great legal thriller! I found the writing well thought out and thoroughly researched. I highly recommend this book. Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC. All opinions are my own.
I love the author. Had great story.. I would like more books by this author. Definitely worth the read.

I didn't realize this was the 4th book in a series and requested it because of that cover alone. The blurb was one of the most intriguing things I have ever read and since I am a sucker for a good thriller, I decided to pick it up. This follows the happenings of a court trial after a highly known celebrity is accused of murdering his wife and how our defense deals with the mysterious happenings in the courtroom.
.
First, Can we just say killer being in the Jury is a kick ass concept and I was really happy with how the book turned out! I mean how can you not fall in love with the witty Eddie as a character as well as a defense attorney when he makes all those arguments. The dialogue when it came to him especially was really well done and I loved reading his thought process.
.
Second, I can't begin to describe the happiness I had when I found out the POV of the killer! I mean you know it's one among the thirteen and the mystery of solving who gets really intense and enjoyable as well. The way the killer and the defense thinks were done in a very complimenting way, and it made me think about a lot of things and feel things.
.
Coming to the story and the characters, I really loved the double POV this book delivered , and how the story line progressed with a single mystery in mind. I know I loved that blurb, but I would have loved this book story wise even more if I hadn't known where or who the killer was. I get the author's point, but what can I say, I'm picky and selfish. Not even in a single line I was bored reading this story and I really enjoyed my time. The only thing was, I didn't quite like the way this book ended. It was a solid ending, but I expected a lot more with the way the author carried the story forward.
.
Overall, this book had an amazing story-line, kick-ass characters, dual point of view which makes you want to pull your hair out ( In a good way trust me), really good word flow, a solid ending and really good dialogues. I loved the mystery and thriller elements in this book and I definitely recommend this book to any mystery/thriller lovers out there. Even if you are new to the genre, you can pick this one up. It's not super heavy but gives you the satisfaction of reading a mystery thriller !
Thank you so much for the opportunity to review this book and to be an early reader via NetGalley! However, I will not be writing a review for this title at this time, as my reading preferences have since changed somewhat. In the event that I decide to review the book in the future, I will make sure to purchase a copy for myself or borrow it from a library. Once again, thank you so much for providing me with early access to this title. I truly appreciate it. Please feel free to contact me with any follow-up questions or concerns.
A very clever, unique premise for a book. The killer isn't being tried, he is on the jury! This book had me gripped from start to finish with lots of clever twists and turns.
I enjoyed everything about this book. As I was reading, I kept telling my husband that he’d like it too because of its one of those novels that will appeal to everyone. Thirteen (or TH1RT3EN if you want to get fancy) is written and constructed so well, I think you are going to see this one everywhere this summer. Though its number four in a series, its the first time I read anything by this author and I had no problem jumping in.
I found the plot fascinating and how the character pulled it off was like something out of a movie, but better because the book is always better than the movie!
It’s the murder trial of the century. And Joshua Kane has killed to get the best seat in the house – and to be sure the wrong man goes down for the crime. Because this time, the killer isn’t on trial. He’s on the jury.
But there’s someone on his tail. Former-conman-turned-criminal-defense-attorney Eddie Flynn doesn’t believe that his movie-star client killed two people. He suspects that the real killer is closer than they think – but who would guess just how close?
I don’t always love courtroom dramas, legal thrillers OR books in a series, this was all three yet I gave it four stars over on Goodreads which is a testament to the author’s skill in writing. What a thrilling novel!
First, let me thank netgalley and the publishers for approving my request for an early release of this book. All reviews of my netgalley books can be found on goodreads and youtube. Please be sure to check out the links attached.
This book is truly unlike any other that I've ever read. The description itself gave me goosebumps, and the intense storyline kept me on the edge of my seat!
I recommend this book for those who like mystery/suspense but needs something never done before.
Thank you to NetGalley for the digital ARC and the chance to review this book!
Man, was this book insane or what?!?! I had heard from quite a few friends how good it was and I'm glad it didn't disappoint. Reading the blurb just on the front cover 'The serial kill isn't on trial. He's on the jury', just blows me away. So many questions that I absolutely had to read this book to get answers.
Despite being an amazing book there were still some things I just wasn't a fan of. I hated the chapters from the killers POV. Also, I felt like how they figured things out was by quite the leaps and it didn't all add up in the story.
🌟🌟🌟💫 (3.75 out of 5) I really enjoyed Th1rt3en and will more than likely try to check out some of the other books in this series. Eddie is an underdog I wouldn't mind rooting for and seeing get his life together. I'm pretty excited for his next book about two sisters both accused of the same murder. Now that is going to be good.
Thirteen Review
Thank you you Netgalley and Orion for the e-arc of this title in exchange for an honest review.
This one was action packed right from the get go. It was a great courtroom suspense with a tangled web that had to be unwound and figured out by Eddie Flynn. This is the fourth in the series but it is the first one I have read and I had no issues following along having not read the others. Although I think that if the rest of them are this good I will have to go ahead and pick the rest up. I loved that we got both Flynn and Kane’s perspectives. I always think it’s fascinating when the author gives us the killers perspective.
