When I requested this book from the publisher, I had no idea that it was the 4th book in a series. But it honestly didn't matter. While there were some minor references to earlier books in the series, it could have served as a stand alone.

I found the concept of a serial killer sitting on the jury of a murder trial unique and interesting. It reminded me of a mixture of John Grisham's Runaway Jury and an episode of Criminal Minds.

I thought the way the story progressed was perfection, with lots of build up. I will say that I wasn't entirely shocked by any of the "surprises" along the way, but the story came together in a way that made sense while addressing all the loose ends.

Overall, this was a strong mystery/thriller and I enjoyed my first read from Steve Cavanagh. I would highly recommend.

Although the fourth book in the series, Thirteen was easy to follow! Honestly, the short but to-the-point and intriguing blurb was what really got me interested and made me click that Request button fast. The thought of a serial killer as part of THE jury is so interesting. What makes Thirteen such an enjoyable read?

* Thirteen was told in two POVs: Eddie Flynn, the con artist-turned-abominable lawyer, and Kane, the serial killer whose passion is to frame people on crimes that they didn't do. It was thrilling to view the crimes in their POVs and how they try to discover and outsmart each other.

* The serial killer is literally incapable of feeling pain! With a huge dollop of wit and knowledge, this makes him a DEADLY opponent. Although still not a valid reason to murder people, it's sad to realize that Kane unapologetically relishes his crimes because this is what makes him FEEL things and emotions. Since he can't feel pain, he finds pleasure in inflicting pain on others.

* There's an equal amount of action inside and outside the courtroom that made me tear through the pages! The plot twists were revealed as the Flynn and his colleagues put the pieces together and close in on the truth.

The Serial Killer Isn't on Trial. He's on the Jury.

Thirteen is the fourth book in the Eddie Flynn series but it can be read as standalone. This is my first book of the series and I surely regret not reading the first 3 books of the series. As a part legal and a part psychological thriller, the author has combined the best of both genres to create a mystery thriller par excellence.

Hollywood star Robert Solomon is charged with the brutal murder of his beautiful wife. This is the celebrity murder trial of the century (lot similar to the O J Simpson case) and ex-con turned lawyer Eddie Flynn is the only man who stands between Bobby and conviction. All the evidence points to Robert's guilt, but as the trial begins a series of sinister incidents in the courtroom starts to raise doubts in Eddie's mind. Is the killer closer than he imagined?

Thirteen is a fast-paced thriller with many twists and turns. The narrative is split between Eddie and the killers POVs, each advancing the story in their own way. Though presented as a courtroom drama, at the heart, it is still a psychological thriller. Just when you think you have figured it all out, you encounter another twist that keeps you on the edge. The writer has done well to keep the narrative tight and not letting it get confusing.

The story really shines in the second half with Eddie’s incredible courtroom skills and his battles with the DA. Having said that, it never gets too technical and can be enjoyed even if you don’t particularly like legal thrillers.

Eddie and the killer were both compelling characters. Both intelligent and calculating, setting up chess moves to counter each other, one after another, in a battle of wits. Even the other characters from Art Pryor to Harper are well crafted and memorable. Some of the killer’s actions seemed inexplicable. The jury never really came into play in the story which was disappointing for someone who enjoys jury battles. Having said that, it does not take away the fact that this is a well-crafted story.

Overall, Thirteen is an excellent thriller. An exciting and entertaining page-turner that will keep you hooked right till the end. Recommended!

Many thanks to the publishers Flatiron Books and NetGalley for the ARC.

The premise is really interesting, but for someone who has read/watched a lot of crime fiction there just seemed to be little things that didn't add up and made me doubt the story even though it sounded like something I would really enjoy. I'm also not quite sold on Eddie's characterization as the con man turned lawyer who only defends clients that he believes are innocent.

This is listed as the forth in the series, but can easily be enjoyed as a standalone. I have not read the previous books.

Thanks to Flatiron books and Netgalley for my copy in exchange for an honest review.

Audio: Enjoyed the narration.

A classic cat-and-mouse game with an interesting twist: the killer is on the jury. Engrossing and fast-paced!

I loved this book! I was worried since I hadn't read the books before it, but I will definitely go back and read them now. I don't like doing a recap of the book- you can see what it is about in the brief synopsis. However, I can say it was a very quick read- read in 2 days. It was frighteningly realistic... tons of action, but not too bloody. I will be reading everything Steve Canagagh writes from now on!

From the first page, this thriller captures your interest. It's practically a cat and mouse game between the lawyer, Eddie Flynn, and the criminal, Joshua Kane. Kane has carried out several murders throughout the years without drawing attention to himself, but could Eddie Flynn finally be the one to piece all the evidence together and have it pointing in his direction? You'll definitely want to read this one to find out!

The legal thriller got me—hook, line, and sinker. I was intrigued by the premise of a serial killer being on the jury of the trial and the book was executed very well. I felt like the ending dragged a little bit but otherwise it was perfection. I didn’t realize the book was part of a series but it wasn’t a problem, as I was able to catch up. I am looking forward to reading more Steven Cavanagh books.

I thought this was a very enjoyable read. The serial killer on the jury concept was something that I have not come across before, and I thought it was very interesting and I loved the suspense it gave. I even had a small crush on Eddie Flynn. He just had all the smarts and wit in the courtroom. Thirteen had an intricate storyline that definitely took a lot of thought and research, and that made the read even more enjoyable.

I was concerned when I received this book and discovered that it was the 4th book in the Eddie Flynn series but, I happily discovered that you didn’t need to read the 1st 3 books in the series to be able to understand and enjoy this book.
I loved this book, I thought it was an exciting, original, addictive, smart and violent legal thriller.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves reading about serial killers or loves a great legal thriller.

What a ride! The serial killer isn’t on trial, but in the jury!

I have only read a few courtrooom drama/thriller but I love them. This was my first in the Eddie Flynn series, but I enjoyed it and will have to check the rest out.

I thoroughly enjoyed this and would recommend to anyone looking for a thrill ride!

A fast paced and unique legal thriller. While I wasn’t able to predict the final twist, there wasn’t enough lead up for me to believe the twist when it happened (it’s hard to explain without spoilers!). Read it for the premise of a serial killer on the jury. Do with the twist what you will. Enjoy the ride. #netgalley

The premise of this book immediately hooked me - a serial killer who manipulates his way into the jury of his own trial? Genius. And terrifying. I haven't read the previous three books in the Eddie Flynn series and although I don't like to jump into the middle of series, I don't think it's necessary in this case. There were bits of Flynn's personal life but past events were recapped and we focused mainly on a trial, in which Flynn represented an actor accused of killing his wife and bodyguard.

It took me a while to get into it but it definitely helped that we got a second perspective from the serial killer, which made things much more thrilling and disturbing. Once we got to the court, it became hard to put it down because I was fascinated by the drama and how no one was aware that there is someone else apart from Flynn and the prosecutor playing their games and plotting every word and motion.

The last part was wild, I didn't see the twists coming (I don't enjoy guessing that much anyway, I usually just let thrillers take me on a ride) and I had to admire the structure of the story. It doesn't happen to me very often with thrillers that I feel like re-reading them to read the story with knowing eyes (or ears or whatever) but this was definitely the case. The serial killer was one of the most frightening and clever criminals I've ever read about and it was also interesting to read about some evil cops while being on a huge Brooklyn 99 kick.

I couldn't quite give this book 5 stars, mainly because of the slow start, but I would definitely recommend it and I'm thinking about picking up the previous volumes of the series to catch up on Eddie's personal life and previous cases.

What an intense and suspenseful book! I've read a lot of detective/investigative fiction before but am more new to the legal thriller type of books. I also didn't know going into this book that it was part of a series, although I may have to go back and read the others in the Eddie Flynn collection now.

Thirteen started somewhat slow to me, and I had a bit of trouble getting into it. I'm not sure if that was the story itself or my ability to concentrate but within a few chapters I was hooked! The premise of this book is so interesting and draws on so many things I enjoy. I loved the dual perspectives and the fact that one perspective often started exactly where the last left off. This made the book so much more of a page turner as I just had to know what would happen next.

The characters were well formed and thought out. I felt like I was actually getting to know them personally. This book had the perfect combination of character and plot focus for me. Of course, a certain level of belief suspension needs to be taken when reading this book but it is fiction after all, so this doesn't bother me in the slightest.

Overall, I'm excited that this was my foray into the legal thriller genre and I will be picking up more books by Steve Cavanagh in the future.

So the description is what got me. It isn’t what I normally read but I enjoyed it and couldn’t put it down.

I had a hard time getting into this and ultimately didn’t finish. I feel like it just wasn’t my type of book and for someone who likes court dramas it would be a good fit.

One of the best books I've read lately. Greeping right from the start, it kept my attention for its entire length. This book is so well written and whenever you think you know what is going on, you realize that you are so mistaken. I definitely would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a good thriller.
