This book hints on intermittent fasting but with a restricted eating plan, i.e no sugar, etc.. I liked the clean food listings. It also has daily meal plans (if that's your thing). However, there were inconsistencies in the amounts of food you could have. For example: one day you could pick a grilled cheese sandwich - but it doesn't say how much cheese you could have. The exercise section was almost laughable...seriously who doesn't know how to do a jumping jack? This book could be helpful in helping one eat cleaner. Add in portion control and exercise and you could drop some lbs. If you're not a fan of being super restrictive, this plan probably won't be for you.

I received this arc from NetGalley for an honest review. If someone is interested in starting to eat clean for the first time, this book may be a good first step.

Clean and Lean is a 30 day plan for eating healthy and beginning exercises. Smith gives 14 "rules" or guidelines to follow during the 30 day period that this book covers. He also provides a food list (with room for accommodations), an exercise plan (for beginner, intermediate, or advanced), and a daily breakdown.
Each day is structured like this: an inspirational quote, a short blurb about the day, meal and snack options, workout, and a section called "the more you know" (fun facts about vitamins/minerals/health). The end of the book contains diagrams for the workouts, a snack guide, and condiment recipes.
Without actually taking the 30 days to apply this book to my life, I cannot tell you if this book will help you lose weight. What I can tell you is that it is a comprehensive and helpful guide for those who are interested in not only shedding pounds, but retraining their pallet to enjoy clean, healthy foods. The only way this book could be improved would be if it came with a monthly calendar with meal plan options and workouts listed on each day. (A girl can dream, right?)

If someone is unfamiliar with clean eating then this could be a first stepping stone. I didn't learn anything really new to this book, but the information was presented well.

Previously, I read Blast the Sugar Out!: Lower Blood Sugar, Lose Weight, Live Better, also by Ian K. Smith, and found the way of eating he suggested to be very easy to follow, so I was very excited to see that he had a new diet book out. Since I still have weight that I need to lose, I could think of no one that I’d rather turn to for advice.

New ideas in healthy eating are discovered all the time; it’s a good idea to search for updated information to be as healthy as possible and feel your best. Smith does a thorough job of explaining how this way of eating is a good plan to follow. As in the past, the foods are ones that I found enjoyable; believe me, I’m not an extremely adventurous foodie, so it’s good to find things I like in a plan I don’t mind doing.

I give this book 5 stars. Thank you Ian for helping me to understand the latest discoveries in healthy living.

This is not your average “diet” book. It’s not a fad, it’s not a quick fix. What this book is, is a healthy way to eat with normal foods you find in most fridges and pantries. It not only teaches you about nutrients, but it gives you a month of meal choices and exercise routines to help you on your journey. I have heard about intermittent fasting, but was unsure what it was until now. Ian K. Smith explains it in detail, in language we can all understand. He also gives us choices of different ways to fast to fit your eating schedule and lifestyle. With food lists, meal plan choices and exercises to follow, this book is like having a personal trainer and dietician at your fingertips.
I am always leery of the newest “diet” books that hit the shelves but this one is different. You don’t have to go buy special foods or gadgets to lose weight. This book is about eating healthy and learning about the foods we eat and when we should eat them. My husband and I both decided to try the plans and we feel better already. My favorite part is that you can adapt it to your lifestyle and you can still eat your favorite foods. Thank you to St. Martin's Press and Netgalley for an advanced copy of the book to review for my honest feedback.

This is a book I have been reading lately. I am slowly going through each day's "motivation". I think one of the things that set this book apart from other "dieting" books is - the meal ideas. It takes the guesswork out of eating. And these are meals with carbs. And the plan is so versatile. It gives meal ideas, whether beans are your jam - or chicken is (for example).

In each day of motivation, it gives you a bit of a pep talk, meal/snack ideas, workout plan (if you can do that sort of thing), and finally, it teaches you why you need a certain nutrient.

The book officially comes out April 9, so ONE WEEK from today - my friends. For the pre-order, it is only $14.99 for the Kindle edition. For a new health book by a best selling M.D., this is a great deal. One of the key points of this book is Smith utilizes intermittent fasting (which I can't do, but this book is great even if you can't) and using 30 particular foods for 30 straight days to maximize our results, so we can get to our goals even faster. The foods are things you pick. You pick your 30, as long as it is from certain categories. Unlike Whole30 or other programs, this one includes dairy and beans. For myself, this is what sets it apart from other programs we might have heard of.

I have been trying to diet using the keto method and trying to intermittent fast occasionally. This book is very helpful in explaining how intermittent fasting works and why it is a good idea. I like the way the book is written and I was able to understand the author's ideas. I think that will continue to try the fasting and see if it helps me. I have ordered this book for the library where I work.

I have read several of Ian Smiths books and I believe he really knows what he is talking about. This book helped explain intermediate fasting to me. I have heard so much about it but I had also heard a lot of conflicting info. This book really straightened all that out. It also lays out a 30 day eating plan that is easy to follow, but not easy to do. No alcohol, no sugar, no fun. But I will say it does work and I even noticed a difference in my hunger level, I was fuller faster and not getting as hungry. This is worth the read.

The first chapter was interesting then it went downhill. No science to back up anything. It was one of those "if it works for me it will work for you". I can not recommend this book.

I like Intermittent Fasting. I feel my best when I'm following a regimented, mostly clean, eating plan. I'm not jumping on the dieting bandwagon. I have other reasons for needing to follow a strict diet. 10 years ago I had surgery on my gut that forever changed the way I have to eat....it happens. I deal with it. Plus, I'm a food addict. When I get upset...I want to eat. When I'm happy...I want to eat. When I'm sad...I want to eat. I just like to eat. I look at it like this....food is my drug of choice. Instead of alcohol, drugs or other options....I choose food. So, I have to keep a tight rein on my eating or face the consequences.....gaining weight, feeling sick, etc.

IF limits daily meals to a period of hours each day. There are a number of fasting hours each day, and a number of eating hours each day. All meals, snacks, or drinks with calories have to be consumed during eating hours. So if I'm following a 16:8 IF plan, I fast for 16 hours a day and eat during an 8 hour window. From 8 pm to noon each day, I would be fasting -- no food, or drinks with calories. Then from noon to 8 pm, I can have 3 meals and snacks. Make sense? Some do 14:10, 12:12...there's a whole range of options depending on what works for an individual. The basic concept is simple.

Dr. Ian K. Smith's new book, Clean & Lean, mixes an IF eating plan with clean eating options and an exercise program. His plan calls for cutting out processed foods, added sugars, junk carbs and eating a limited list of healthier foods. He combines his clean eating program with IF -- clean foods eaten within a limited window of time each day.

I enjoyed reading through this book. Smith gives basic information on how IF works, the IF requirements/restrictions and options, and a basic list of allowed clean foods with flexible options. He gives basic instructions for exercise for beginning, intermediate and advanced fitness levels. There are some recipes included for making homemade condiments, salsa, salad dressing, etc.

Pros -- the plan is simple. A quick read through the book, a trip to the grocery store, and anybody can be trying this program. There are no strange, hard-to-find foods on his list. It's all normal foods available at any store. He doesn't list any expensive supplements, drinks, powders that are supposed magic elixirs available for outrageous prices on his website blah blah blah -- we've all seen those diet guru tricks. None of that here -- his entire plan is in the book with no gimmicks required. Healthy foods & willpower, both supplied by the individual...with guidance from Smith. Easy Peasy and nothing sleazy.

Cons -- Just the usual common sense precautions here, especially for those with special medical needs like diabetics. IF is a controlled eating program, and anytime someone makes radical changes to their nutrition or exercise, their personal doctor should be consulted first. Also, Smith does have a website with the usual diet/nutrition guru stuff (exericse DVD, multiple other books, etc) available and an app. But, those add-ons are not pushed in this book. Everything someone needs to try Clean & Lean is in this one book. There is an extra recipe book available for purchase separately....but clean eating recipes are readily available everywhere. Local libraries, free internet sites.....literally everywhere. The recipe book isn't required. And there is no hard sell gimmick. I saw no potions, powders, vitamin pills or anything like that for sale on Smith's website either. If an app or extra recipes is a plus for you -- buy them. But, you don't have to. Kudos to Smith for not pushing sales of sketchy supplements or other books on his readers.

Over the past few months I have gotten lazy with my eating.....and I'm starting to notice the icky feeling creeping back. The sluggish, out-of-shape, blecky feeling I get when I'm not eating right.....I hate it. I want the pep back in my step...so I'm going to clean up my act. I think this new book might just be a great catalyst to put me back on track. I'm putting myself into self-imposed rehab when it comes to food.

I like the simplicity of this book. The information is straight forward and basic. Smith provides a suggested daily eating/exercise plan for 30 days, a list of allowable and restricted foods and a very basic regimen of exercise.

Full stars from me for the simple presentation, basic daily suggested regimens, and no sales gimmicks!
