Amory Ames and her husband, Milo, have traveled to New York for the wedding of a childhood friend. Tabitha and her American father moved to New York when her mother passed away. Amory is looking forward to staying with Tabitha, catching up and planning the wedding. They have arrived weeks in advance so have plenty of time to meet all of Tabitha's wedding party and Milo plans to look for new business opportunities.

It isn't long before Amory is asked by Tabitha to look into some mysterious visitors to her father. Bootlegging and Prohibition are in full swing so that is the first thing on everyone's mind. When the best man is shot on Tabitha's doorstep Amory is pulled into dangerous waters. The dead man, Grant, has a rocky past and may be involved with two different gangsters. Amory knows England not New York. Milo helps with gathering information of the businesses and speakeasies but the danger level is increases when Amory realizes she is pregnant for the first time. A whodunit that will have you guessing to the end.

This is one of my favorite mystery series. When a new one is out it goes straight to the top of my TBR pile. I am so excited for the next step in Amory and Milo's life. I hope Ashley can do as Elizabeth Peter's did with Ramses and include the child in the mystery investigations in the future.

I’ve come to love this series. The stories are fun and the development of the characters - Amory and Milo have been wonderful - I love how their relationship has develops and continues to do so. Book 6 did not disappoint. I love the fact that it took place in NU during the prohibition era with speakeassies and gangsters. Amory and Milo have to solve who murdered the best man and unravel the mystery before anyone else gets hurt. The murderer surprised me - did not suspect this one.

This book has a little surprise for the readers and I won’t say more on that subject and hopefully for book 7 or maybe 8 we can hope their will be a story development with the gangster and accountant

Another great read

Love this author and love this series. It’s a very well written historical mystery. The characters are all well developed and interesting. The story and plot are easily to follow and entertaining. I highly recommend!

The eponymous dangerous engagement belongs to Amory Ames’ good friend Tabitha Alden, who is set to marry American Tom Smith, whose past is pretty vague. Tabitha, the daughter of an American father and a now-dead English mother, has been living in New York for several years, and that’s where the wedding is to be, with Amory as the maid of honor.

This being New York City in 1933, there will be brushes with bootleg booze and bootleggers before the novel ends. While not as satisfying as, say, A Most Novel Revenge or the series’ debut novel, Murder at the Brightwell, A Most Dangerous Engagement, the sixth in this series, proves a most delightful read.

Another charming read in this fun series ...this time across the pond. The change in location was welcome. Milo, of course, fits right in with the gangsters and speakeasies. This book is part of the excellent Amory Ames series of mysteries. This book follows Amory and Milo across the Atlantic to NYC to attend a wedding. Her childhood friend is having a whirlwind engagement, and Amory decides to learn more about the young woman's finacee. She ends up investigating in a world of speakeasies and gangsters, but still manages to keep her head. When the best man of the wedding is murdered on her friends doorstep by apparent gangsters, Amory flings herself into the investigation much to the chagrin of her husband Milo. I've written about their relationship before, but in this book Milo really bugged me right until the very end. I like that Amory doesn't put up with his bossiness or rules, but there were some moments I thought he was deliberatly a little mean. He definitely redeems himself in the end, but this investigation really put a strain on the couple. Still, the underground world of NYC gangsters was fascinating, as was the descriptions of the illegal activites of the new characters. I hope we see more of the dashing gangster and his singing accoutant, but who knows!

As always, Ashley Weaver delivers with another 1930s high-society mystery. In this edition, Amory and Milo find themselves in New York City for a wedding. Within days of arrival, they are embroiled in another mystery with possible gangster connections. Though this was a fun and rollicking mystery, it was not my favorite of the series. The glorious Britishness of the books is one of my favorite features and that is somewhat lost in the American setting. No spoilers, but I'm already anxiously awaiting the next book!

While a New York setting will never be as enticing to me for a Golden Age mystery as an English one, this was still an excellent installment in this really well-done series. Readers will be pleased to see that Amory and Milo's relationship continues to evolve and develop in new ways, and I'm already eager to see what Weaver has in store for them next.

In this sixth installment of the Amory Ames mystery series we see Amory and Milo head to New York for the wedding of Amory's friend, Tabitha. Naturally, death and mystery follow Amory and before she knows it one of the groomsmen is dead on the front porch. This mystery takes her to the dark side of gangsters and smugglers in prohibition era New York.

I've been a fan of the Amory Ames series since the first novel. Unfortunately, I felt this book was a slower read than any of the previous ones. Several times I felt like I was reading the same lines/conversation that I had read several chapters earlier. There's so much potential with gangsters and prohibition but I felt this novel just barely touched the surface. The last quarter of the book picked up and was fantastic. It felt more like the Amory Ames that I have grown to love.

Even though I felt this was a slow read, I'm still excited to see where Amory and Milo end up. I'm excited to see if Milo's new business dealings come to fruition and how the two deal with some new things headed their way.

I love this series. It's light, easy read, but still has substance and interesting characters. I'm in love with Milo and Amory's relationship. It's an actual adult relationship with peaks and valleys. Everything is not always roses but they do care for each other. The surprise revelation wasn't much of a surprise and I had guessed what it was by page 10, but it was still enjoyable to see Amory come to the conclusion. This is one of those series that's enjoyable to re-read when you're in a book slump or need to cleanse the palate.

A very charming addition to what I think of as the Amory Ames canon. Milo is always written in a particularly perfect portrayal of the
maddening bon vivant.....the mystery has the usual slow reveal and the author has total mastery of the detailed and alway fun setting/sense
of decade and place. So exciting to have baby Ames on the horizon.

Here we are in the 6th book in this series and I'm happy to say that I'm still enjoying them. In this installment, Amory and Milo are headed to New York during prohibition to attend the wedding of Amory's friend, Tabitha. Amory suspects that there's more going on the moment they get to New York and soon finds out that she may be right. Amory and Milo find themselves embroiled in another investigation when a young man is shot and killed at Tabitha's home. Amory can't stop herself and before she knows it she's meeting gangsters, getting involved in wedding drama, and wondering what Milo is up to. I love the characters of Amory and Milo. Their relationship is natural--sometimes loving, fun, sweet, and complicated. The mystery was good, of course. I can't wait to see what happens next because Amory and Milo's lives are about to change and we know Amory won't stop getting involved in another investigation!
