Everything you ever wanted to (or maybe didn't want to) know about hair. Lots of facts and fun pictures.
As a teacher, I like this type of book that goes in-depth into a topic that students know a little bit about, but by reading the book they discover so much more. And animal books of all types are always a hit with students of all ages! I highly recommend this book.
You wouldn't think hair would be all that interesting, but this is a pretty cool collection of trivia. The progression of information is interesting and sensible. It's not perfect. Visually it's kind of messy. Each fact is accompanied by an image and a pair of cartoon animals. Not only are the cartoons and their puns unnecessary, their placement of ten covers up part of the example image. They throw off the visual flow of the page.
This title provides an engaging introduction to the curious young about #hair. The book introduces the hair in human beings and other animals. The book introduces hairless animals and the oddities of nature. The back matter provides clarifications in question and answer format. This is a great book for STEM with plenty of reflection questions and activities.
Hair! What a cute non-fiction book about different types of animals their coats and hair. The illustrations are good as well is the information. This book is highly informational and would be great for early readers with some assistance.
Hair!: Animal Fur, Wool, and More is a children's nonfiction book written by Marilyn Singer and illustrated by Julie Colombet. Why are humans and other mammals covered in hair, and why are there so many different types of it? Vivid photographs paired with a duo of quirky, illustrated hair guides serve to illuminate the fascinating facts about mammal hair: why it exists, what it's good for, and more. Readers will learn about different types of animal coats, such as fur and down, and explore the many different forms guard hairs take, such as the quills on a porcupine.
Hair!: Animal Fur, Wool, and More is a well balanced non fiction book for young readers. I like that information is given alongside beautiful photographs and illustrations that offer a combination of humor and fun facts. A great deal oft he information I already knew, some I had forgotten, and some was new or updated from what I had learned previously. The vocabulary was highlighted and dealt with well through out the book, and some of the terms I had forgotten in this context. The trivia at the end of the book goes into more detail about some of the information briefly mentioned elsewhere in the book, and will encourage some readers to study animals or people and their characteristics further. I really like that there was a glossary, further reading, and bibliography included in the end papers for those that are interested enough to do further research and reading. That always makes me happy.
Hair!: Animal Fur, Wool, and More is a well done book and I think it will be a high interest read for children interested in animals and any type of biology. The balance of images and interesting information might make this a favorite, and at least a regular reread for some.
I received an electronic copy from Lerner Publishing Group through NetGalley.
Singer uses a dog and bird as narrators to take the reader through information about hair, fur, wool, etc. The two narrators engage in conversation and learn about different mammals. A Q&A section at the end provides further information along with a Glossary and Further Reading sections.
The illustrations and photos support the text and show readers how hair types work to help animals stay healthy.
Definitely will use when covering mammals with elementary classes.
This book is an in-depth juvenile non-fiction book about why animals have hair. There is a lot of information and pictures within the book and questions for kids to ponder.
Who knew there was so much to know about HAIR! This is very informative and the two characters that are along for the ride will help kids remember facts. The pictures are clear and not cluttered with extraneous material. The bibliography and further reading pages at the end are a plus for those wanting more on the subject.
This book is great! It would be fabulous in my grade three nonfiction library. The book has interesting facts and colorful pictures that make it a high interest book. My students would love it!
A big thank you to NetGalley and Lerner Publication Group/Millbrook Press for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. This is a children's nonfiction book. It was more technical than I was expecting. I was a little disappointed in the graphics. I would say this is for a child in school. Maybe 2-6th grade. It was interesting. I rate this is a 3.5
Love this book! It has real pictures of different animals with different types of hairs from your hairless too very hairy with lots of information on each. It's well structured so that you don't feel overwhelmed and each page shows you some new facts you may not have known. Definitely going to buy it for my son. It's more adequate for older kids 4 or 5.
Thank you Netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This book raises a number of interesting questions about hair (“Were you a hairy baby?” “How about before you were born? Were you hairy then?”) and answers them with a mix of clarity and humor. A straightforward answer is accompanied by many illustrations of real hairy animals and even two hairless ones, plus cartoon-like characters whose “speech bubble” comments inject humor. A delightful way to learn information and be amused at the same time.
