This was just not interesting enough to keep my interest. It started kind of softly and slowly but then it didn't pick up.
This book really kept my attention! From the beginning in October 1866 Mary Catherine and her family emigrate from Georgia to Brazil because her father and maternal uncle refuse to accept the terms of the Reconstruction following the Confederacy’s defeat.
What follows is more than a young child's circumstances should have to be in a lifetime let alone such a short amount of years. Bad luck seems to follow her. Happy memories sustain her.
A story of hope amongst survival mode that keeps this story rolling will have you turning pages quickly .

Mary Catherine is devastated when her family emigrates from Georgia to Brazil because her father and maternal uncle refuse to accept the terms of Reconstruction following the Confederacy’s defeat. When she is orphaned, she finds refuge among kind peasants, ultimately marrying the scion of a wealthy Portuguese family.
Nicely written and well told family saga. A turmoiled and confusing piece of American history. Confederados fleeing Reconstruction after the Civil War moved to Brazil at the invitation of that government.
