Lying Next to Me is a rare book for me because I honestly had no idea what was going on for most of the story. The author hinted at connections between guests at the cabins but I couldn't figure out how the story was going to play out. The pace was a little slow especially the parts that were more domestic drama than thriller. Yet, I was completely surprised by the conclusion. First book I read by the author but certainly not my last.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for allowing me to read a copy of Lying Next to Me.
I'm a big Gregg Olsen fan, I really like his true story books. This was a good read. I did find myself skipping over some spots that had to much detail. The book kept me guessing who done it, but it was not a compete surprise.
Gregg Olsen has done it again. Lying Next to Me is a WINNER!
I quite enjoyed the storyline and the well-crafted characters. Here we find Adam and Sophie and their 3-year-old daughter vacationing. You would think that's great. Well, things turn bad when Adam witnesses Sophie's abduction while he is swimming. This book has enough twists and turns to keep you reading until the very end. What a story, loved it.
This book was provided by Netgalley in exchange for my honest opinion.
OH, WHAT TANGLED WEBS WE WEAVE!
Adam and Sophie and their three-year old little girl have set out for a long weekend for some alone time and family bonding. They are staying at a secluded beach area with small cabins and all the amenities that would be needed for a real getaway. They plan to go out on a small boat in the lake and also do some digging for clams and barbecuing, swimming and getting lots of sun. This time is just what is needed for a break from their busy work lives and getting back to basics.
There are two cottages next to them, one has a woman with her two grandchildren, and the other cabin has a young couple staying there. Adam is on the boat with his daughter while Sophie us reading a book on the deck, when suddenly Adam sees her fighting with someone who carries her off. There is another witness but when the detectives arrive, they seem to be suspicious of Adam (naturally) even though Adam is distraught over witnessing what appears to have been an abduction of his beautiful wife.
What has happened to Sophie? Who and why would someone abduct Adam's wife. There will be more questions than answers as the story rapidly progresses, but all questions will be answered by the end of this very suspenseful and compelling book.
"Lying Next To Me" was a wonderful read for me. There were so many twists and turns that my head was spinning. At one point, I thought I had the ending figured out, but I was happily wrong. Sometimes I really enjoy being wrong. Gregg Olsen is an exceptional writer and I have picked up several more of his books for future reading. I can't say enough good things about this book except hurry and make sure this on your reading list!
I want to thank the author Gregg Olsen and the publisher Thomas and Mercer and Netgalley for allowing me the opportunity to read this outstanding novel!
I highly recommend this terrific book and have given 5 Outstanding 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 Stars!!
Gregg Olsen is the master at writing twisted mysteries. And this book does not disappoint. The characters are well developed and the author fleshes out their negative characteristics. They are narcissistic and absorbed in themselves. Betrayal is at the core of this story and you need to discover who to trust. I liked that each chapter was told from a different individual’s point of view.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
Thank you netgalley, the publisher and author.
Gregg Olsen writes books that keep in vested from the beginning.
Lots of twists and turns. Love watching him on television when he gives feedback on crimes.

I have no idea how many months passed already since I’m in this “psychological/domestic thriller” loop, but for now, the attraction for this genre looks just as strong as when it started and it’s still bringing me joy and excitement. So here we are, with yet another mystery that I finished in just two-three days: Lying Next To Me.
There’s not a single character in this book that doesn’t look deceiving and shady. Even the only one which seems pretty clean in the beginning will make you change your mind later. As for all the rest…no chance they won’t make you squint suspiciously to anything they do, say or even think! This is perhaps one of the most interesting aspects. When it comes to this type of books, usually the authors prefer to mislead you into thinking that their characters are innocent and later to shock you by revealing their true nature. But Gregg Olsen makes everybody look guilty. You doubt everyone, you detect all the lies they’re telling both to themselves and to the others around them and yet, you still cannot put all the puzzle pieces together.
I normally don’t even try to unravel a mystery and just enjoy the ride as it comes, but this time I was convinced that I discovered the murderer way before reaching the final chapters. So I was completely surprised to see that in the end, I was and I wasn’t right in the same time. I did get a part of the puzzle, but only to notice that I missed a whole other bunch of it.
I enjoyed the whole story, the characters’ double faces, the imperfect matches, the apparently untied threads that the author leaves here and there.
What I definitely didn’t like was the rushed ending, the way everything looks fast-forwarded. There’s a constant cadence during the whole book, not to slow, not to fast and in the end, everything escalates in an unnatural way. I guess the author’s intention was to raise the reader’s pulse and the adrenaline levels but it felt unnecessary and unflattering for the whole story. All of a sudden, you’re witnessing this abrupt evolution of some of the characters and therefore, the whole story’s development looks forced and hasty. That’s actually the only reason why I dropped my rating from 5 to 4 stars so besides this annoying aspect, the story was a great and engrossing read.
Thank you so much for the opportunity to review this book and to be an early reader via NetGalley! However, I will not be writing a review for this title at this time, as my reading preferences have since changed somewhat. In the event that I decide to review the book in the future, I will make sure to purchase a copy for myself or borrow it from a library. Once again, thank you so much for providing me with early access to this title. I truly appreciate it. Please feel free to contact me with any follow-up questions or concerns.
I received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. I love ALL of Gregg Olsens books and this one included. He has a way that his books instantly draw you right in. Highly recommend
This was a great thriller from Gregg Olsen but I expected nothing less. He is a great writer with a wonderful command of the English language. This book keeps you guessing through out. It has twists and turns a plenty and just when you think you've got it all figured out he changes the game again and you're right back where you started. While on holiday together in Washington State Adam, his wife Sophie and their young daughter are enjoying Memorial Day away. While out on the water Adam witnesses his wife being abducted and there's nothing he can do about it. An old woman witnesses the abduction and phones the emergency services but another family nearby, the Moss' apparently see nothing. The quest to find Sophie begins and we are given a gripping piece of writing which will keep you guessing right up until the very end.
Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to preview this ARC of Lying Next to Me by Gregg Olsen.
Adam and Sophia are on the beach, enjoying a lovely day with the family. But when Adam gets distracted and later finds his wife struck and abducted, his world collapses. Who would target his wife, and why? Now with his young and confused little girl, and his super abrasive and aggressive father-in-law, Adam has to get to the bottom of what happened to his wife.
I know that this isn't a fair criticism, but man the characters were unlikable. Sometimes I kind of prefer a hard-to-love protagonist because it drives the story forward and explains a story, but in this case, I struggled to know who to root for, save the detective. Otherwise, it was a fun and fast thriller with an ending I didn't see coming.
Lying Next to Me is the first book I have read by Gregg Olsen. I will try another of his books but I really don't have high hopes for this author.
The story was good but I wasn't fond of how the author writes. The characters just didn't grab me and it took over a week for me to finish it. We sell a lot of his books in my store and we will continue to let our customers know about Gregg Olsen. I'm hoping the next book I try will be better for me.
Thank you NetGalley for a copy of Lying Next to Me.
Adam, Sophie and their daughter Aubrey are enjoying a Memorial weekend away when Adam, from a boat out on the lake witnessed Sophie being abducted. The police are immediately called and Lee, who is someone from Adam’s past, is the detective handling the case. Even though Adam has an alibi to the abduction, his father-in-law Frank (who is one of the most annoying characters ever) believes he is responsible. But Lee knows Adam. He was her brothers best friend. He couldn’t possibly be involved right??? As Lee digs deeper into what happened there are things that just don’t add up and she will discover that somehow the couple, Kristen and Connor, in one of the other cabins is involved. This was a really fast-paced read and I never found myself getting bored however it was one of the most predictable books I’ve read. Now that isn’t saying it’s not a good book, I just enjoy a little more suspense than what was delivered but I’d still recommend.
Lying Next to Me by Gregg Olsen is an intriguing story about love, loss, and anger. It takes place at Hood Canal where Sophie, her husband Adam and daughter Aubrey are vacationing for a week-end. The story begins with Sophia's tragic and sudden disappearence. Adam said he saw her grabed from a large rock while sunbathing in the water. He tried to find her but couldn't. The story becomes more complicated as it involves. . Their are many compliated relationships and feelings among the central characters in the novel. Sophia's parents hate Adam her husband are are continually accsusing him of killing her. Nothing or no one is seen as who they really are in the book. That leads to a surprise but satisfying ending.
This was a great mystery suspense story! It's the first on in quite a while that actually had me guessing. And those plot twists near the end, on point.
I need to first say; Trigger/Content Warning:abduction, murder, narcissistic personality abuse, past incest molestation, past child abduction & rape, PTSD, infertility issues, cheating.
Okay, so Adam and Sophie thought they would be having a nice relaxing Memorial Day weekend out near a cozy little place near Shelton, WA. While Adam is out on the lake with their daughter Aubrey, he sees Sophie attacked and abducted. Adam is beside himself in grief and shock. But there isn't much to go by with potential witnesses on land, nearby.
We learn that one of the cabin neighbours may know more about what happened than they are saying, or can even recall. And they are linked to the cabins and the area.
Sophie's dad, Mr Flynn ... Ugh. He's the narcissistic asshole. Definitely an abuser of the mental/emotional kind. Every time he came up in the story, I seriously wanted to kick him in the nutsack. He is so full of himself, and that his little girl Sofie could never do any harm. If he only knew.
The story is told in several POVs, but mainly that of Adam, and one of the detective's, Lee Husseman. These two have a childhood connection. And Lee's veteran partner, Montrose, hopes that Lee can keep perspective on the case. Because of the nature of how Lee and Adam are connected.
This is the first time I have read anything by Gregg Olsen and I really enjoy his writing. I will definitely be looking into other works, and especially his true crime works as well.
Hood Canal and a sweet little 1920s cabin by the water -- an idyllic setting for a weekend getaway that ends in tragedy for a family in Washington State.
Adam and Sophie Warner and their 3-year-old daughter, Aubrey, book one of the 3 cabins near Lilliwaup. Each is named for a flower and they are staying in the "Wisteria." It's on the morning after they arrive that the incident takes place -- Adam and Aubrey are out in a rowboat on the water when he sees his wife Sophie being abducted. Witnesses saw a man in a red jacket grab Sophie and then she disappeared. Police detectives from local Mason County Sheriff's Office, Lee Husemann and Zach Montrose, arrive on the scene and the questions begin. And that's when this gets really interesting...NO SPOILERS
This was an incredible crime thriller populated by some of the most horrid personalities you can imagine! Unreliable narrators that offer lies, keep secrets, manipulate and scheme. The kind you love to hate and since you can't believe what they say, of course you're suspicious of everyone. The pace was fast and the revelations kept coming with twists and turns that are hard to anticipate. So many questions and the detectives have their hands full with the investigation that is complicated by the fact that Adam and Lee have history since both grew up locally and knew each other as children. It was hard to put this down! I really like this author's writing style and the story drew me in immediately and kept me guessing. I'm definitely looking forward to his next book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for the e-book ARC to read and review.
I received an ebook from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. This was a fabulous book! Loved the intriguing, thrilling plot which Gregg Olsen did a superb job of writing. You will be on the edge of your seat when you read this wonderful suspense/thriller! Enjoy! 📚
Was a good read. Solid start to finish. Parts were a bit dull but in the end, a three star read for sure.
Let me start off by saying this book was just not for me. I can’t say it wasn’t a good book, I just couldn’t really get into it.
I’m sure there are plenty who will enjoy this book, however.
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the arc in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own and are completely unbiased.
I have read several books and this series, and enjoyed the main character's point of view. This book was very much a page turner, although it was not my favorite book in the series so far. I shall look forward to reading more books by this author. Recommended for any mystery lover.
