This is a beautifully and carefully translated introduction to the Italian short story -- its evolution and its place in literature today. Lahiri's selections are wide-ranging in some ways but also very cohesively united in others. One of the best ways to know whether a short story anthology works is when a reader is intrigued enough by a story to want to then discover more works by its writer. And there are several such stories in this collection that make us curious about the writer's other works.
