WOW!! Wow. I don't know what I was expecting, but this was not it. I haven't read Sager's previous works but I'm now rethinking that as a mistake. This book had twists and turns galore. You can't trust everyone you meet...and sometimes you can't trust anyone at all. 4 out of 5 stars and I cant wait to get to his backlog!
If it seems too good to be true, then it is. Jules (no nickname) Larsen has a new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan's most high-profile buildings. The residents are rich, famous or both. It is the perfect place to start over in new surroundings for recently unemployed, orphaned and heartbroken Jules.
Every place has it quirks so Jules does not bat an eye to the rules. No visitors. No speaking to other residents. No nights spent away from the apartment. Sign a 3-month lease and get paid $12,000. Never mind being paid cash under the table. She does not hesitate to accept the terms. After all, it is the Bartholomew!
Jules is drawn to fellow apartment sitter, Ingrid. When Ingrid confides there is something sinister going on, Jules chalks it up to a ghost story and rumors. Until she hears a haunting scream from Ingrid's apartment followed by disappearance. Maybe there is some truth to the building's hidden past. Jules races against the clock to expose whatever is happening to the missing apartment sitters before she becomes a permanent resident, i.e., dead.
There is just something about a new thriller that makes me want to spend a summer afternoon reading. Lock Every Door is an example. The story takes off quickly like a marathon and doesn't stop until the finish line. Thank goodness I chose to read it on a leisure rainy weekday. Otherwise, I wouldn't have gotten anything done!
Author Riley Sager knows how to throw lines to hook a reader in. I started off in full agreement with the main character's decision to stay at the Bartholomew. Yes, the red flags were waving tall but for $12,000, take a chance! Then the real thriller fun began. Sager's written words are so realistic and descriptive, that I could feel Jules' fear through the pages. Lock Every Door is worth your coins and time. Recommendable for sure!
Happy Early Pub Day, Riley Sager! Lock Every Door will be available Tuesday, July 2.

Mr. Sager stated that he found inspiration from Rosemary's Baby for this book. This time I actually really did see the inspiration as well as experienced it within the pages of this book. Another similarity that I found reading this book was the short lived television show, 666 Park Avenue.
Right away I was hooked by what was happening with the Bartholomew. Jules as well as the rest of the tenants were very engaging. Because they were well drawn and not a lot of details were given about the tenants; this just added to the mystery.
I could not stop reading. The only times I did was when I made myself so that I could get some sleep. Mr. Sager has another bestseller on his hands with this latest offering. Lock Every Door will have you on the edge of your seat and looking over your shoulder!
While I have enjoyed Sager’s past novels, this is one is definitely his best! This book was very entertaining and quite unpredictable with a clever plot, a creepy apartment building, a cast of eerie, eclectic characters and a main character that you can’t help but root for. A picture perfect thriller!
If you enjoy thrillers then you NEED to pick up this book.
I really enjoyed Lock Every Door by Riley Sager. After a few chapters I didn’t want to put it down. About a quarter of the way through it wasn't an option.
Jules is a likable protagonist who you want to root for. The cast of characters is intriguing. The fact Jules isn’t really supposed to interact with them led me to want to know more about them. And the Bartholomew’s creepy history was interesting and I was always hoping to hear more.
There are little clues through out the book, but even if you see them for what they are there’s enough going on that keeps you guessing. You won’t feel cheated if you solve the mystery before it reaches its conclusion.
This is one of those novels where you can’t help but wonder who you can trust and won’t be able to put down.
Thank you NetGalley and Dutton for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Lock Every Door reeeeally freaked me out! It kept me pretty absorbed and made it hard to put the book down. Some parts of the book felt a little unnecessary, and I definitely felt parts drag on a bit. Overall it was a solid thriller!
What an interesting turn for a suspense novel!
This book starts out kind of slow, but with such a beautiful dream. A job to live in a perfect NYC apartment with the best of views. A salary to boot. It's perfect. A person can only dream. But the mystery of the building literally creeped up under my skin.
I loved the character Jules. She was desperate enough, but still strong. I loved that she stuck to her gut, and broke the rules. It made the story more believable. What else would you do, when the creepy and creaking building is starting to get under your skin?
I wish the descriptions of the building were a bit more dark, to give the building a bit more deathly vibe. It felt like that part was really safely done, and could have used a bit extra with the creepy factor.
There was also a lot of characters to keep track of. I got distracted at times, as well as it didn't help with the slow build of the story. It seemed like a lot of dots needed to be connected, because of so many characters needing to be introduced.
Definitely a fun twist at the end. I was so absorbed with the supernatural theme, I didn't see the end coming. Overall a really great novel, for a quick read.
Holy crap. This book was amazing!!!! Hands down sagers best book.yet! I will be reviewing this on my blog.
Riley Sager is my new favorite suspense author! It's rare that a book can get one by me, let alone SEVERAL twists and turns...Lock Every Door is an amazing mystery that will have you second-guessing the next time you're asked to housesit.
This book was a wild ride from start to finish, and I loved it! It went in directions I never saw coming, and was truly disturbing... All the things I look for in a thriller. Jules is such a strong main character that you'll find yourself rooting for until the last page. This is the first Riley Sager novel I've read, and I'm looking forward to picking up the others now!
Thanks to Netgalley & Penguin Random House/Dutton for an advanced copy of this book!
WOW.
Over-the-top crazy. Awfully addictive. Creepily entertaining. Almost impossible to put down. I am simply AMAZED by how mind blowing this book is. Sager really outdid himself with this one, and it is definitely his very best yet. Jaw dropping twists and you won’t believe what happens next.
Everything in the plot unfolded at just the perfect time. It wasn’t a slow build, but it also wasn’t obvious what was going to happen. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading. I felt that I was along side Jules for the entirety of the story—yelling in my head what she needs to do or how to good to be true everything is. The flow was executed perfectly—so much so, that I finished it in a little over 24 hours.
This certainly may be one of the best books of 2019.
I'm so obsessed with mystery/thrillers that I knew I needed to get my hands on Lock Every Door ASAP! It was exactly the thriller I had hoped for....keeping me engaged the entire time! Riley Sager is seriously such a brilliant writer who knows exactly how to draw his readers! I would definitely recommend Lock Every Door especially if you have enjoyed his other books! Thank you to Dutton and Netgalley for providing me with an ARC for an honest review.
The two things I loved the most about this book are the pacing and the creepiness level. Out of all three of Sager's books this is the one that legitimately creeped me out the most. The whole premise of this story is so genius and it kept me guessing the entire time. I could never have figured out the ending and I loved how dark and twisted it was. The atmosphere of the story really added to the creepiness factor. I love how everything was described and I was able to clearly imagine everything that was happening. Lock Every Door takes place over six days. I love this because it really amped up the suspense knowing that things were going to happen quickly. But at the same time nothing ever felt rushed.
My only complaint about this book is that out of all three of his books I felt the least connected to Jules. You know how in some movies you are yelling at a character that they shouldn't do what they are about to do because it's obviously not going to turn out good. Well, that was me with this character. She had a couple of moments where I was like what the hell are you doing/thinking?! But at the same time I think that it adds to the fun of it all. Think Scream when Stu is watching the movie and Ghostface is behind him. We are all yelling (or thinking) look behind you! Those kinds of things are what can make horror fun (or maybe that's just my perverse love of horror) and I liked the element that it brought to the book.
This book cemented my belief that Riley Sager is one of my top favorite authors of all time. Sager's books are the exact type of horror/mystery that I absolutely love. I will forever read his books and I honestly can't ever picture myself giving anything he writes less than five stars. I feel confident that anyone who loves thrillers/mysteries will love them as well.
Wow wow wow! Riley Sager always keeps me on my toes and reminds me that thrillers don’t have to follow the same cycle of events. 10/10 recommend for sure!
This was my first book of Riley Sager's that I've read. I'm not generally a thriller fan. I always figure it out. Even this one, I was pretty sure from the Rosemary's Baby vibe I was getting, that I had this one pegged too. I was WRONG!!
.Suspenseful and easy to read, I plowed through this book at top speed. I liked the characters and appreciated that no one felt unnecessarily over or underdeveloped. It was almost simple in its telling, but not in a bad way. I could see this playing in my head as easily as any suspense movie, but this one I would actually go see. .
I feel like going into too much detail will give the whole darn thing away. I will say this: if you tend to figure it out, try this book and maybe you won't; if you play with the dream of moving to NYC to be a writer and all the glamorous things NYC offers, read it; if you like a book that just asks you to sit back and read and enjoy it as it is, read this book. .
A strong 4.5/5!!! I've already gotten my hands on Sager's previous two books so I can read them on my upcoming vacation!

Whoa!! Jules is down on her luck and alone in the world with the exception of her bff Chloe. She answers and ad to make big bucks fast to get back on her feet. Once she moves into the famous Bartholomew building she learns of the history and secrets, and knows she must get out...alive! Dark and twisty with writing that is clear and to the point helps this book fly by. Thrilling and entertaining!
I loved Lock Every Door more than I ever loved Final Girls, and more than I hated The Last Time I Lied. Sager succeeds where his other novels have failed---providing me with legit thrills. Campiness is usually great on its own, but when backed by the potentiality of genuine fright, I’m all yours.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher, for this free review copy.
Riley Sager does it again. After reading The Last Time I Lied, I was so excited when I got a review copy for Lock Every Door. Riley Sager is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. This book was a wild ride, and it was so hard to put this one down. I don't want to give too much away, but there are so many good twists and turns. A lot of them I did not see coming. The plot details were perfect, and I loved the flashback and countdowns, in this book. If you are into thrillers, pick this one up ASAP!
On sale July 2nd, so make sure to pick up a copy, or ask your library to purchase it. ☺
Happy pub day to Lock Every Door by Riley Sager! Thank you to Net Galley and Dutton Books for the advanced reader copy!
I read Final Girls by Riley Sager a few months ago and loved it so I was so excited to read Lock Every Door. I think the Last Time I Lied will be read in the near future!
Jules has no parents, no sister, and now no job, place to live, or boyfriend anymore. She has barely any money to her name so when an opportunity to apartment sit at the famous Bartholomew for $1000 a week comes up, she doesn’t hesitate at all. Before her sister went missing, they used to read their favorite book together which takes place in the Bartholomew. Jules finds out quickly that this job might be too good to be true.
Jules is a girl down on her luck. Her job was eliminated due to down-sizing and she has moved out of the apartment she shared with her boyfriend, after finding out he was unfaithful to her. After two weeks of staying with her best friend and unable to find another job (lit majors aren’t in high demand in New York City), Jules is desperate to find something to boost her bank account. Her luck unexpectedly changes when she gets a job as an apartment sitter. Although the rules are somewhat strange (no nights away from the apartment, no visitors and don’t talk to other residents), Jules is thrilled to be living at the Bartholomew, a splendid and elegant old building near Central Park. It’s only after she gets to know some of the residents and staff that she begins to realize that the Bartholomew has a deep and dark history that is filled with secrets. After another apartment sitter disappears the true horror begins.
Riley Sager has written a masterful novel, full of suspense and terror. Lock Every Door slowly builds to a crescendo, taking the reader along for a fabulous and twisty ride. The characters are interesting and varied, the plot well-conceived and executed, and the pace of the story is spot-on. This is a fabulous novel of suspense and chills. I highly recommend it!
