One Night Gone promised to be a thriller with it's subtitle boasting "It was the perfect place to disappear..." That was enough for me to be intrigued even before reading the summary. The story was told in two different point of views during two different time frames, Maureen in 1985 and Allison in present. I was sucked in from the start when we are introduced to both characters. Maureen is traversing the wealthy beach town as a struggling traveling fair worker who finds herself associated with some bad people and in a bit of money trouble. Allison ends up in the same town to unwind and figure out her next moves after a humiliating on-air weather report blowout with her cheating ex-husband.
The stories collide once Allison discovers that Maureen had left that summer of '85 without a trace. Solving the mystery surrounding Maureen's disappearance becomes Allison's passion project. Especially after receiving unexplained packages on her doorstep that could end up being clues that could explain what happened to Maureen.
It's not lost on me that I am in the minority in regards to my star rating for this book. While the potential was there, I was losing steam when Allison began hearing Maureen or thinking she was in her presence. I don't think that the intent of this story was to bring in a paranormal theme, but it still did. It's possible that the presentation of these subtleties is what effected my impression of the book. But I also was not happy with the turnout. While I did enjoy trying to determine who the real bad guy was, if there even was one, I was not satisfied once it was all wrapped up.
For someone who does not read thrillers often and is looking for a quick read, this would be a great book to pick up. For those readers who read thrillers all the time, it would not be my top choice.
One Night Gone by Tara Laskowski is about a teenage girl who goes to a beautiful beach town during the summer hoping to get a fresh start. But then… she disappears. Thirty years after Maureen vanished, Allison is looking for a place where she can start over. She just went through a hugely embarrassing public display of anger, a messy divorce, and needs a place to heal. She heads to the town of Opal Beach, where she learns about the disappearance of a young girl.
What happened, who is hiding what?
What a fantastic plot!
Take a look here:
One sultry summer, Maureen Haddaway arrives in the wealthy town of Opal Beach to start her life anew—to achieve her destiny. There, she finds herself lured by the promise of friendship, love, starry skies, and wild parties. But Maureen’s new life just might be too good to be true, and before the summer is up, she vanishes.
Decades later, when Allison Simpson is offered the opportunity to house-sit in Opal Beach during the off-season, it seems like the perfect chance to begin fresh after a messy divorce. But when she becomes drawn into the mysterious disappearance of a girl thirty years before, Allison realizes the gorgeous homes of Opal Beach hide dark secrets. And the truth of that long-ago summer is not even the most shocking part of all…
This atmospheric novel is a wonderful mystery and will grip you from the opening pages.

This was just such a great whodunit. I read this in one day and had a wonderful time coming up with a potential list of suspects. I must say, I really felt for Allison at the beginning because she was just such a hot mess. It was great to see her grow as the story went on.
The two timeline idea is not always something that works in every story, but it was very well done in One Night Gone. It didn't feel forced to shape the narrative, but rather the narrative warranted two timelines. All in all, a very good book and one I thoroughly enjoyed reading.
Thank you to net galley and the publisher for a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love books where you go back and try to figure out what happened to someone in the past. I love all the investigations and the interviews and not really knowing if some thing is evidence or not. This book had all of that and so much more.
I was so totally invested in trying to find out what happened to Maureen. Story had a lot of twists and I never knew who was a suspect or not. The ending was very much surprised me. It’s what I honestly have no clue what was going to happen.
Special thanks to Harlequin for providing our copy in exchange for an honest & fair review.
I really enjoyed this dual timeline thriller. It kept me guessing and definitely has a gothic vibe. a great read to curl up with on a dark & stormy night.
Thank you for the opportunity to be an early reader.
Entertaining book about a woman who housesits for a couple in a beach town during the off-season and becomes involved in investigating the disappearance of one of the "summer girls" thirty years previously in the same town.
Full of suspense and intrigue. Just when you think you have figured it out, there's a new twist. Laskowski does a great job telling two stories. Going back in time, filling the reading in on the back story. Then bringing you back to the present and telling the present-day story. I can't wait to read more by this author.
A predictable mystery/thriller. This is about a small beach town where people have been having beach parties during the summer. Of course there is a girl who vanished thirty years before, and now a girl present day who is trying to solve the mystery. There weren't any shocking twists, and that story line is super outdated and overused.
I loved the characters in this book. It was the perfect psychological thriller where you want to be invested in everything these characters go through. It had me on the edge of my seat wanting to read more the whole time. Great read! A little hard to follow two different timelines, but that's just not my usual reading preference.
Thank you Netgalley for the chance to read and review this title. I will review this title at a different date.
Thank you to Gallery Books for gifting me an advanced copy of Tara Laskowski’s ONE NIGHT GONE.
I always love a book that can manage to flip between characters so effortlessly and with each chapter told from the perception of that character, I learn a little bit more about the storyline.
ONE NIGHT GONE kept me interested and entertained. I wanted so badly to find out what happened to Maureen Haddaway that I read this book until the early hours of the morning. It was full of some seriously great twists that I didn’t see coming.
The only problem that I had with the storyline is that I did feel that there were times that Laskowski wanted to take the book in one direction but then changed her mind.
Overall, it was a good story that I recommend you pick up. It will be published on October 1, 2019, just in time for the spooky season! It is available for pre-order now; I hope you add it to your reading list for this fall.
Thank you again to Tara Laskowski and Gallery Books for gifting me an advanced copy of this book!
I honestly could not have cared less for this book, when I originally requested to read this book I really wanted to be interested and I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and spread my wings. But in the end I couldn’t pick up this book and I doubt I will ever.
One night Gone is an enjoyable beach read. I had fun reading this ominous atmospheric summer read. This is the type of book to pick up on a summer afternoon as the sun is setting. Laskowksi uses a type of writing that goes back and forth between time lines. It takes talent to pull this off without affecting the coherent nature of the novel. Laskowski pulls this off flawlessly engaging the reader even more. We are reminded in this novel that secrets no matter how deep they may be can be closer to the surface than we may think.
I recommend this book that was provided to me through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
For the most part I read this book in one day, reading about half in the morning and coming back and finishing up at night, even if it was a little spooky at that point!
This book is split between Allison's story in the present, and Maureen's story in 1985, and the points of view, the changes in chapters work well, and are paced in a way that enhances the story. This is a mystery with suspense, and just when I thought I'd figured it out (mostly), there was a twist that was interesting and created a whole other layer for the story.
Mystery and suspense isn't always my genre, but I enjoyed the character explorations in this book, the part that the house played (the spectral aspects enhanced, while staying out of the territory of full-fledged ghost story), and the interesting ways that women's power, or lack-there-of in some cases, can create injustices.
Overall, a very enjoyable story, and I appreciate receiving a copy of this book for review from NetGalley.
Finally got to read this enjoyable book, it had all the elements of a good book, sucked me in right away, keep me guessing, and made me feel about the character’s
I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed are my own.
It feels like this book was trying to be grown-up Veronica Mars and failed.
I don't think I've ever seen an alternating POV work for a mystery/suspense novel, and it didn't here, either. It felt like it kept trying to be really suspenseful and mysterious, but it was fairly slow and just overall meh.
An atmospheric thriller that teeters on the brink between mystery and ghost story without ever giving too much away. The beach town vibe is well-developed, and the reader gets a good sense of the micro-tensions in a small town, between the townies and the summer girls. A strong female protagonist and a great twist ending make this a must-read for any thriller fan.
I've heard a lot of good things about One Night Gone. But I knew the moment I started it, it as overhyped.
The story features yet another middle-aged divorcee seeking a new start. I like that she is a meteorologist who got fired because she put her husband in her place so that made the character likable and I was hoping for good things as she housesits for a rich family on the beach. But the past comes back to haunt only it's not her past.
The book switches between past and presents giving you a look into a missing girl whom Allison is trying to help find. It was Maureen's chapters that propelled it until about three-fourths of the way through when she herself becomes a cliche. Meanwhile, the atmosphere around Allison isn't as taunt making her passages mostly boring until the end, when the twist is revealed.
But overall the twist doesn't save the book. YOu just feel sorry for Allison all over again.
One Night Gone isn't over creative and left me wanting something more out of it.
Good beachy thriller that keeps you guessing until the end! I like a good disappearance-themed mystery and this one didn't disappoint - while it wasn't the best, it was an easy likable read!
Thanks to Tara Laskowski, Harlequin/Graydon and NetGalley for the ARC of this book!
One Night Gone was a very addicting, highly enjoyable read. I devoured it in two sittings. Will be excited to see what Laskowski writes next.
