This phenomenally informative book explains In seven chapters how autoimmune diseases originate and how to take action to beat or cure them. The additional 5 appendices are a treasure trove for further examination and healing.
Each chapter is full of examples, details, research and case examples which makes this book an excellent reference to refer to again and again. More about approaches to functional medicinal approach can also be found on the website www.BeatAutoimmune.com.
The whole book can be summarised with the acronym “F.I.G.H.T.S.,” food, infections, gut health, hormone balance, toxins, and stress.
What I liked is not only the wealth of information but all the action steps given to really tackle and ultimately heal what the author calls “autoimmune epidemic”. This book is like the’ must-have reference guide everyone who lives on the standard American Diet (SAD) needs. I highly recommend it.

Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This was a excellent source of information and data for those suffering from many of the autoimmune diseases. The author takes us through the six components that could be cause of the onset of these diseases: F.I.G.H.T.S., for Food, Infections, Gut health, Hormone balance, Toxins, and Stress.
Each chapter goes into depth about each component and what we could do to improve or prevent each correlated issue. The author also provides websites, recipes and doctors you can utilize to begin your journey. As someone with an autoimmune desease this couldn't have come at a better time. Definitely on my to buy list!

As someone with a family member who has had MS for many years, I disagree with the central premise of this book that you can "cure" or prevent autoimmune diseases through your own actions. People with an autoimmune disorder looking for ways to improve their quality of life may find this helpful, or they may be frustrated by the lack of universality in the author's story.

As someone who has read a lot of books about overcoming autoimmune conditions I was a little underwhelmed. There wasn't any new information that I had not seen before.

When the foreword of any health book is written by Mark Hyman, MD. I sit up and listen because he is a highly accredited physician in the health and nutrition field. He trusts what Palmer Kippola is talking about and he recommends this book. HE trusts this book. So, I trusted it as I read it.
Palmer was diagnosed with MS while in college and she was determined to keep “living”. She asked herself all of the questions…Did she cause this? Could she fix it? Could she change anything?
This book is about answering all of these questions. She lays everything out in a very clear and direct manner.
This is definitely my go to book for my autoimmune and inflammation repair and I highly recommend it.
I would like to thank the publishers for sending me an ARC of this Novel via NetGalley.

This is an excellent overview of factors that contribute to autoimmunity and concrete steps you can take to heal. The author shares her own story of being diagnosed with MS and discovering how to heal, as well as sharing other people’s stories. She also cites plenty of studies, explaining the science in understandable terms.

Reading this book felt like getting advice from a knowledgeable friend. I was already familiar with much of her overview of the root causes, but where this book really stood out for me is in all of the very specific suggestions Ms. Kippola provides. As an example, she discusses specific lab tests to order and the pros and cons of each. She also provides guidance on supplements you might want to try, including recommended brands, dosages, and notes on how best to take them. I didn’t know that Vitamins D3 and K2 should be taken at separate times or that NAC should be taken on an empty stomach. I really appreciated all of that detail, which will make her suggestions much easier to implement.

One of the author’s suggestions is to try a “food vacation” (an elimination diet), and to support that, she includes an appendix of recipes that comply with the Paleo autoimmune protocol (AIP) diet. I haven’t had a chance to make any of the recipes yet, but they appear well written with lots of helpful tips. They look like they will be tasty and easy to prepare from commonly available ingredients (not true of many other AIP recipes I’ve reviewed). I’m particularly looking forward to trying the No-Tomato Sauce.

In addition to the recipes, the back matter includes a symptom tracker, an adverse childhood experience (ACE) score quiz, lots of resources and recommendations, a bibliography, and notes.

I think this book will be very helpful for anyone dealing with autoimmunity themselves, or for practitioners who want to know how to better support patients with autoimmunity.

I was provided an ARC through NetGalley that I volunteered to review. Because I have not seen the final published version, I cannot comment on the final editing and formatting.

Beat Autoimmune by Palmer Kippola is based on years of research and personal experience. It is divided into sections about the things most important to this health plan.
By changing a few things in your life you can get a handle on our possibly reverse your autoimmune disorders.
I plan to try these changes in my own life.

Revert MS. Yes you can!

Describing her experience, suddenly started 35 years ago, in her new book Beat Autoimmune, Palmer Kippola is offering an invaluable resource for society. Only someone who passed through this kind of illness, Multiple Sclerosis, and was able to reverse it, can do this service to the millions all over the world, who suffer, have suffered and will suffer, not only of this disease, but all those coming from autoimmune dysfunctions.

For over 25 years compiling precious information about the functioning of the immune system, hormonal conflicts, cellular incompatibilities, food intolerance, the impact of interaction with people, housing, community, nature, and an endless list of aspects that influence the performance of our body. All knowledge is presented in Beat Autoimmune in a structured and accessible format available to anyone.

Divided into seven chapters, dedicated to the factors that Palmer considers pivotal in the functional approach, not only to patients with Multiple Sclerosis, as it is her case, but to the majority of people suffering from autoimmune diseases. Beginning with a lesson on a necessary change in habits, going through bowel treatment and general disinflammation, reducing toxins, controlling stress, hormonal balance and how to move forward, maintaining a new, healthy quality of life.

Packed with useful advice, the book includes recipes for a 30-day AIP (Auto-Immune Paleo) regimen, pilot tests, resources and data on innovative practices and recommended readings to help each one, according to their problem, to find information on the internet.

Palmer Kippola with this book helps those who, like her, have wandered for years and decades between medical services without envisioning healing. She has already been in everyone's place, and has created an authentic recovery manual for autoimmune patients. Indispensable, not only for those who suffer, but to all those who live with those who suffer from this type of illness.

Priceless!

I too have a form of MS and other autoimmune diseases. I have a friend who has done lots of research in this area and tells me similar information. I'm finding this to be an excellent resource and recommend it for anyone battling MS or other autoimmune conditions such as Lyme, Hashimoto's, fibromyalgia, etc.

After doctors told her the only treatment was to take medicine and she would be confined to a wheelchair, Palmer searched for other answers. Was a good thing, too, because she reversed her MS through nutrition and lifestyle. ( I must profess this is where I struggle, the diet and nutrition aspect) The author has carefully put all the research into one place which is very helpful. . The "toolkit" approach contained in this book is full of actionable steps you can take to figure out your root cause triggers and start to heal. I highly recommend adding this to your arsenal against Autoimmune disorders.

I requested and received a digital copy from Kensington Books via Netgalley, all opinions are my own.

This book is not a quick read nor is it a guide that gives easy to follow practical advice. A person suffering from an autoimmune disease would find it interesting to read as long as they took the information with a grain of salt (make that sea salt seeing as the author says table salt is bad). The author does identify lot of areas that could have an impact on the development of an autoimmune disease but her solutions for dealing with each one are so varied and extreme as to make the book pretty much useless. As well, the author doesn't back up what she says with much in the way of references or research and she herself is a layperson. In each of the six sections she has a little self-test that I defy anyone to get a good rating in. By the time I got to the third one I was laughing out loud because according to these self-tests every person in the world has an autoimmune disease and thus should do all these extreme measures of a massive daily cocktail of vitamins and supplements, organic meat and produce, no dairy or gluten, reducing stress (although reading this book will increase some people's stress ...)

That said, it's good to read through. Some things might resonate. Just don't let it stress you out!

There's plenty of stuff out there that preys on sufferers of autoimmune diseases claiming that they can cure you. Much of it is just a bill of goods. This book is not that kind of book.

Kippola. a long-time sufferer from MS, cured herself of the disease through an integrated approach to healing that looks at 6 major areas that may be affecting your disease. She takes each one, describes the factor and what problems it may cause, including case studies of people who have been cured of their autoimmune disorders.

The bulk of each chapter looks at how you can discover if this problem affects you and what to do about it. Many of the comments resonate well with medical thinking these days. But, and it's a big but, the author really doesn't give us references or much science to back it up.

And that's my frustration here. This all sounds so good, but to do what she asks is hugely expensive and time-consuming. From the diet and personal products free of so many chemicals, to the many supplements and vitamins, also chemical-free, you should take, there's plenty of research required initially and probably on-going. Then to really determine what's happening you'll need to research specialized practitioners of functional medicine as well as other kinds of practitioners who may be hard to find. Finally you'll need specialized tests to get at the root of what's going on. Few of these will be ones you can get through your local lab. Most will be gotten from only specialized labs.

Don't expect much of this to be covered by your health insurance.

Therein is the problem at the foundation of the book. To give Kippola credit, she never claims that these cures are easy, quick, or cheap. But if I am going to undertake such an arduous journey to cure an autoimmune disease, I sure would like to feel as if there was more proof (in the form of references) to back it up.

nonfiction, health, nutrition

***** This book is not trying to sell you anything except itself and a better awareness of your own body and how you can help yourself to improved health. Many respected resources relate similar info to help avoid things like heart disease, but the info here hopes that you will adopt the foods imperatives that could change your physical health and thereby improve your present as well as your future. Just reading the book will not change much, but if the info is applied you will indeed see changes.

This is a good book on a very very complicated topic. As you probably know, diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune is highly individualistic. The authors do a very job of trying to simply the related topics and provide realistic (not necessarily simple) approaches. There is a ton of good info here and it can be overwhelming (but that's no fault of the author). This is credible, helpful info. Getting thru it and taking action can take a very long time -- again due to the nature of autoimmune, not the author.

I'd recommend this without hesitation. Don't expect to finish the book and be "cured". But it may point you in the right direction or at least a potential direction, since addressing autoimmune can take years.

I really appreciate the ARC for review!

Chances are you or someone you know suffers from chronic disease. This is an unfortunate reality of the 21st century. Beat Autoimmune is written in a conversational, easy to understand manner. It includes important discussions such as how the environment, microbiome, infections, food allergies, epigenetics and toxins play a role in autoimmune disorders. I admire the author's autoimmune plight and her dedicated crusade to help herself and others, I fundamentally disagree with the correlation she proposes between childhood stress and autoimmune diseases such as MS. While I agree stress plays a role in managing autoimmune diseases, I don't agree that it plays a causative role, or in the author's words, is one of the "root causes." Having said that, this book was still worth the read. I appreciated the informative research, anecdotal evidence and positive messages.
