This is the second in the DCI Anna Tate series. Anna is dealing with a high profile case involving a prominent MP when the body of a young women is found on Barns common. Meanwhile Anna is also still desperately searching for her daughter who was kidnapped ten years ago by her father. These two stories run along side each other through the book and keep you gripped till the end. Anna is a very likeable character and you hope she is able to catch the killer while keeping the search going for her daughter.
this book is the second in the series and I haven't read the first one. I might have missed some things by not reading the first, but overall it was very easy to follow. Great storyline and great storytelling
I really enjoyed this book. It was just what I was looking for and was a great summer read if you enjoy crime thrillers.
Anna Tate has a full plate. Not only does she had a dead body on her hands but the victim is the daughter of the woman who is on course to be the next mayor of London. Add in an MP with a dirty secret, a stalker ex-boyfriend and a family that all seem to be hiding secrets and you have a book that keeps you turning it's pages.
It's obviously a part of a series but you don't need to read them in order. You're are no obvious disadvantage if you start with this book, however it's definitely got me hooked enough to go back and read the rest.
Excellent psychological thriller! It moved at a fast pace with twists and turns throughout! Well-developed characters and plot. Highly recommend!
After recently finishing In Safe Hands, Book 1 in the 'Anna Tate' series I couldn't wait to dive into book 2. It's funny I'd had book one on my kindle for some time, one of those I'll read it soon, books. I finally got around to reading it while trying to rest and grit my teeth through the pain of a trapped nerve. It was a great distraction and as soon as I finished it, I started book 2 right away.
I felt I got to know Anna Tate quite well in the first book, yet I feel like I know her a whole lot better after reading book 2. She's a character that will be interesting to grow with over future books.
An amazingly written storyline that grabs you from the opening pages and doesn't let you go until you have read the last word. It's one of those books you can't wait to pick up and fly through, but then as you get near the end of it, you don't want it to end. I could have read another 10 chapters of this book and not felt like I'd had enough. I certainly look forward to reading more from this author and more from this series.
Fighting through a murder case and having the demons of her missing daughter, Anna has a lot on her plate.
I would say it isn't essential to have read the first book, but I feel you would have a better understanding of the back history if you read the books in order.
This was an excellent thriller, the pace kept up, the ending was suitably tense and the story well written. There were enough twists and turns to keep me guessing and I enjoyed the fact the lead detective was a woman. I understand there are more books that feature her and I would certainly read those too.
I really enjoyed this book two in the DCI Anna Tate series. It picks up a short time after the first in the series, In Safe Hands. The book opens when Anna is called out to investigate the brutal murder of a young woman, the daughter of a prominent MP. The second plot line is the continued disappearance of Anna's daughter, Chloe, from 10 years ago. I have no hesitation in recommending this series of books as they keep the reader interested to the last page. A tense and gripping thriller, leaving me excited for book three in the series. Thank you Net Galley for my ARC.
Compelling read which I found hard to put down. Did not read the first book but that did not deter the premise of this one. I did figure out part of the answer to who killed her so 4 stars from me. I would definitely recommend this novel and look forward to the next offering. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the chance to review it.
A compelling story about the murder of a young model, being investigated by Detective Inspector Anna Tate and her team.
This is a graphic story that draws you in from the very first page, where the perpetrator leaves the woman hidden in undergrowth on a dark tree lined common. Consisting of short punchy chapters, the book grabs your interest, making it impossible to put down.
Anna, the police officer in charge of investigations into this crime had her own daughter Chloe abducted ten years ago, and has been searching to find her ever since. The two crimes are written in a well constructed way, with convincing, believable characters. While the main story takes prominence, the abduction of Chloe and consequences, bring hints of terror and menace.
This is a fast, pacy book, full of suspense. Investigations into the murder of the young woman who is the daughter of a senior politician, and her past connection with a high profile MP, DCI Tate needs to solve this crime quickly. With several suspects and various alibis, this isn’t going to be easy. Lots of twists and turns, with a bittersweet ending.
Highly recommended, this is the first DCI Banks thriller I have read, but hoping that the author writes more.
At Your Door is the second police procedural in the DCI Anna Tate series and is even more compulsive and compelling than the first. It isn't essential to have read the first instalment before this but I would recommend it in order to understand Anna's character and motivations. Only a fortnight has passed since her last case was closed and now Anna and her team are thrown into a world of rumour and press interest. Model Holly Blake has been found murdered in Barnes park with her throat brutally cut but what they uncover about her life and the company she keeps opens up a huge can of worms. Meanwhile, as they try to contain the fallout of their discoveries, Anna finds renewed hope in her search for missing daughter, Chloe, as an interview produces some promising new leads.
The dual plotlines, unlike in many other thrillers, are equally as intriguing as one another and I found it a difficult book to put down; I literally read until my eyes would no longer stay open. Both storylines have some very unexpected and unguessable twists in the tale, which I thoroughly enjoyed. There is intensity, suspense, mystery and plenty to engage your emotions, and it is a beautifully written and constructed novel, which is gripping from first page to last. It had me burning to know where it was all heading and I found the fact that the plot was grounded and based in reality made it even more enjoyable for me. As for Anna, she is a hard worker and takes her profession very seriously, however, we know little about her personal life besides daughter Chloe's parental abduction. Roll on book three! Many thanks to Avon for an ARC.
This is the first time I have read this author but I immediately got into the story and it got me hooked straight away. There were actually two stories combined in one book and the author went between the two in the book, leaving you wanting to know more each time!
At the start, DCI Anna Tate is called to a crime scene of a dead young woman who has buried on Barnes Common and found by a lady dog walker in the early hours one morning. It turns out that its a daughter of an Ex senior police officer who is now a politician. Also, she has been having an affair with MP who is implicated in her murder.
Also, the hunt for Anna’s missing daughter, Chloe, is still ongoing even though she has been gone ten years, when her father kidnapped her. He had access at weekends and one weekend he didn’t come back and disappeared abroad. He had come back to Southampton three years ago where he had been killed but then the trail had gone cold again but now the local paper was running a piece on it again so Anna was hoping something would come from it. Then Channel 4 were hoping to cover it as well. Then she got a call from her private investigator, there was a new lead…..
This book had me hooked the whole way through. The author knew how to ramp the pressure up then changed direction to the other story so a good tactic to keep you reading! I found the book unputdownable and really loved it. The story flowed so well, I liked the characters and I liked the style of writing. I will be looking out for more by this author and looking to read book 1!
Bravo, Mr. Carter. Bravo. Nothing in this book happened as I expected and I loved it. I was on the edge of my seat guessing what would happen right until the final page and I didn’t see either ending happening coming until it smacked me in the face and my jaw was on the floor. This was a surprising, salacious, emotive, tense and gripping thriller that exceeded my expectations and left me thirsty for more...
DCI Anna Tate and her colleagues at the Major Investigation Team have barely had time to draw breath after their last high profile case when the body of 23-year-old Holly Blake is found and they’re plunged head-first into a case that will put them under more pressure than ever before. It seems to be a simple case of revenge and murder, but as the investigation continues shocking secrets are revealed, and multiple suspects come to light. As the complexity increases, so does the pressure to make an arrest, but it seems every time they find an answer to one question, another three take its place.
Simultaneously, the decade-long search for Anna’s missing daughter, Chloe, seems to finally be gaining momentum and she finally has real hope of them being reunited. But she darent get up her hopes too much or allow herself to be distracted from her job so she throws herself into the hunt for Holly’s killer while waiting for what she hopes is the call she’s longed for.
I already knew from the first book that I loved Anna. Her ability to compartemtalise her personal and professional lives even when her mother’s heart must have been screaming to forget about her job and go find her daughter, was remarkable. We saw her strength and how she refused to be intimidated or bow down to pressure, instead searching for the truth and being determined to get justice for Holly. She is a fantastic character and everything in this book made me love her more.
Poor Sophie. My heart broke for her as revelations saw her world crumble and she was left with an impossible dilemma, a true “Sophie’s choice”. She was superbly written and I loved how she was such a big focus of this book. Her story was vital to Anna’s hunt for Chloe and made the matter more convoluted, no longer simply a case of rooting for mother and daughter to be reunited. I was riveted by the twists in this part of the tale, intrigued by what Sophie was hiding, and found myself wishing there was a way for all parties to come out of this happily.
The author also wrote some great villains in this book. Nathan was sleazy, vile, aggressive and just simply a disgusting person that I never felt an ounce of sympathy for. From the first moment he’s introduced he made me both furious and cringe at the same time. And then there’s Bruno. His sickening plot for revenge surpassed any other evil in this book. He is a psychopath in every sense of the word and the author gave me chills whenever this character was on the page.
To create such amazing characters that inspire such a range of feelings in the reader, and write two stories that both maintain momentum and keep you hooked throughout, shows what a skilled writer the author is. He will distract you. letting you think you know the outcome, and then hit you with the truth so suddenly you’re left dazed and confused. I was in tears by the end of this book, my heart was broken and yet I wanted more.
If you love readable police procedurals, great characters, gruesome murder scenes and addictive, twisty thrillers, then this is the book, and the series, for you.
Thank you to NetGalley, Avon Books UK and J. P. Carter for the chance to read this novel in exchange for an honest review.
Thanks to NetGalley for an early copy in return for an honest review
A very good read and one I can highly recommend to others.
I could not put this down.
Thoroughly enjoyable with an amazing cast of characters that you cannot help but engage with.
Excellent instalment in this series - not a heavy read but really enjoyable and full of surprises with a dramatic conclusion. Loved it.

Wow a fantastic read, I struggled to put this book down, all through the book despite what happened to Holly I really really was desperate to know the outcome of Sophie and Alice. I had it in my head it would be a close call if whoever reads this book will fully understand what I mean, if we would find out in this book or if we had to wait for the next one, it's so full of twists on every level. Regarding the case about Holly which I will confess ended nothing like I thought it would so that was a bit of a shocker. Then what if anything was going to be the outcome for Ann, Sophie and Alice. I love Ann's the character that Ann being a DSI in the police, also as she can put everything else behind her while investigating a serious crime. I can not expect that to be easy with other things that may or may not be coming to a head, you can almost feel the tension in her however dispute the tension she always keeps her mind on the job in questio. It's a very well paced book and very well written. I really do recommend you read it, you will be on the very edge of your seat almost biting your nails trying to anticipate the next move.
I am very very eager to get my hands on the next instalment with Ann and her team also be person life. It's a must must read
Excellent read. Hard to put the book down. Right from the start you were sucked in and new this was going to be a good one. The storyline was wicked. Not quite knowing where it was going next. There was lots of twists and turns in the road.
DCI Anna Tate #2
Anna is given the case of a young woman who has been found naked, with her throat cut, in the woods. We also get more on the backstory about Anna's daughter who had been kidnapped by her ex husband twelve years ago. The murder victim just happens to be the daughter of an ex police commissioner who's now an MP. Holly had been a freelance model, her lover was also an MP. Anna is now under pressure to get this murder case solved.
This book in my opinion is better than the first. It's gripping and fast paced. I like the authors style in writing. The plot is well constructed with with several twists that kept me guessing. A police procedural that is very enjoyable. Anna is getting closer to finding her daughter and the developments lead to a dramatic ending to this book. I look forward to reading more books in this very likeable series.
I would like to thank NetGalley, Avon Books UK and the author J. P. Carter for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is the second book in this series and it’s a fantastic read.
Anna is called out to the murder of a young woman and as more information comes to light about who she is, tensions start to rise.
When her home is checked they find secrets that she’s been hiding that send shockwaves through her family.
The girl’s mum used to be high up in the Police force and is now an MP and is devastated by her daughter’s death.
The press don’t care about feelings and splash the story everywhere, putting more pressure on Anna and the team to find the killer.
Anna is also getting closer to finding her daughter and developments lead to a dramatic ending of the book.
I loved this book and can’t wait to read the next one.
This is a highly addictive crime series that you won’t want to end.
Thanks to Avon Books UK and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
Compulsive reading, this is an addictive suspenseful psychological thriller like no other.
The plot is unpredictable with lots of twists and turns along with solid engaging characters.
There is also a sense of dread as the story deals with the deep and dark corners of the human psych.
I very much enjoyed this and would recommend it to anyone!
I loved DCI Anna Tate, and I loved author J. P. Carter style of writing this story. It is bloody brilliant, if I may say so. It is a police procedural where Anna was called to solve the murder of a young girl Holly whose body was found in the woods. Anna Tate was supported by a good hardworking team, forensics, and sheer dogmindedness and commitment to solve the murder.
My second book by J. P. Carter, and I was so deliriously happy when the author gave me a second story about Anna's daughter running parallel to the main one. Anna's daughter had been kidnapped by her ex husband 12 years ago, and her search was on.
I loved Anna, I know I am repeating the sentence, but the way she could compartmentalize her personal and professional life was nothing short of brilliance. Knowing that her daughter was so close yet so far could create havoc in a mother's mind. It is the author's sheer talent that has etched a character like Anna who has now become so close to my heart.
The plot lines of both the story were convoluted. Nothing was at it appeared. The story of Holly went through various curves. Just when I thought it had reached a finale, there was another layer to it. Whoa!! Made for exciting reading. The parallel story about her daughter had a gamut of emotions running through it, along with a twist. Omg can you see what this author can do?!!
J. P. Carter's books seem to have hypnotized me. I was supposed to red only for an hour, but to my amazement, I spent the entire morning reading this book. I clearly was completely lost in the book. As you can guess, I loved the book, the character, and this author.
