Great characters and a believable world make for a thoroughly enjoyable story.
I would certainly want to read more from this author.
A wonderful Fantasy story.
Rose Trewin is on the run. Pursued by memories of her father, she runs from city to city, seeking normalcy. But Rose can’t escape her past, or the magic running through her veins, the magic that allows her to slip through the shadows unnoticed. The magic her father once used to mold her into a mercenary sent to destroy his enemies. Now her magic is growing and changing, becoming something new and untamable. Rose is unable to rest. Wolves wrapped in fog follow her relentlessly along the countryside. Desperate, she uses her magic to escape, but the shadows are pushing her towards the center of a conspiracy. Now, her country teeters on the brink of a civil war as a Lord Governor gathers power against the king. An enemy, with magic similar to her own, emerges in the chaos of political intrigue. Faced with a country at war and a king brought to his knees, Rose must accept who she is and harness her powers in order to save her country and herself.
This was a good introduction to a new paranormal story that I enjoyed. I really liked Rose and I liked following her through her journey of self-discovery. I recommend.
**I voluntarily read and reviewed this book
I try to read this book many times in the last few weeks and every time I just managed to advance a little bit before I found another book more interesting to read. I was nothing exactly wrong with it except that I wasn’t interested enough in the story to continue reading.
The world Natalie Johanson creates is amazing. It is so vibrant and rich in detail, it was like I was really there.
The plot kept my eyes glued to the pages in order to read as fast as I could before having to go to work. I was reluctant to put it down, and when I did all I could think about was, what is going to happen next.
I loved the backstories behind the characters, they were woven so perfectly that it made the characters real and relatable.
I love the magic, history and geography that the author somehow manages to blend beautifully, like a chef who has mastered the flavor of a dish.
I like paranormal romance. I wanted to like tgis book, but somehow that did not work so well. I tried to like the story bit it felt flat for me. What was missing was the story became ordinary not so much magical and I loke magic a lot!
This was an interesting story with a cool magic system.
What I liked about Rose was her take-no-crap attitude, and how unimpressed she was about others importance.
What I didn't like about her, was how she each and every time she was assaulted, always left the attacker able to continue to pursue her and assault her again, which they did every single time.
Rose finds herself in a world where happiness is getting harder for her and the wolves and her powerful magic may be the reason. This was a paranormal story that had battles of good vs evil and war that must be fought. Thank you NetGalley for allowing me to read this book.
I was given an ARC through Xpresso Book Tours throught Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
When I first viewed the cover, I almost kept scrolling. I know. I did the thing. I judged a book by the cover. To me, it looked like a red riding hood knock off. However, something in the back of my mind told me to take a moment and just read the synopsis. The story did not sound too bad, even if the description felt a little cliche. When I was given the ARC, I cracked open the book with a little trepidation about what I may discover. Was the story going to be good? Would it be like every other magic wielding, other universe, books like all the others scattered on bookshelves today? Now that the book is complete read, I have to admit that it was actually pretty good. There were quite a few typographical errors that made reading distracting at times, but this is a new author. If there was a better editor, I would have bumped this up to 3.5 stars instead of three. This book is rather good for a brand new author! There is room for the author to grow, and I look forward to reading her next book and see where her career as an author takes her.
First, I would like to thank Netgalley for providing me with this book, in exchange for an honest review. I have a few thoughts that I’m going to try to get out in a way that makes sense.
I’ll be honest: I didn’t love this book. I had some problems with the word usage. Several words were used often enough that it was noticeable and distracting. Words such as “drawl,” that are usually used sparingly, if at all, were used quite a lot more than I would have liked. That is just my personal preference. However, I felt that if those words were interspersed with others a little better, they would have been less of a distraction from the book.
It also seemed as if the author has something against using pronouns. Proper nouns were used a lot, even when a pronoun or differently worded sentence would have served better. I don’t know if that’s something the editor would suggest changing, or if it’s just that the author’s writing style didn’t jive with me.
I did like that the story started up right away. This was a fast-paced book, full of action. Rose was tough and self-sufficient, and her brand of magic was incredibly unique. I think what I liked best about the book though, was Micah’s relationship with Rose. He was the most believable of the characters and a good addition to the story.
While far from being a horrible book, it’s probably not one that I’ll go out my way to look for a sequel to.
