'Artist Toolbox: Drawing Tools & Materials' by Elizabeth T. Gilbert is a short, but informative, introduction to different tools for different mediums of art.

The book starts with setting up a drawing workspace, then discusses different mediums and the best types of papers to use for each. Drawing tools are discussed. Pencils and grades, sketching pencils, charcoal, and pastels are covered as well as variants. There are examples of what can be achieved with each, and the book ends with some step by step projects using many of the tools discussed.

I like these short but informative guides from Walter Foster. They give enough information to help guide decisions. The art included shows results and the instructions are clear.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Quarto Publishing Group-Walter Foster, and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

For beginners it's fairly easy to understand, and it has almost everything I expected it to include: tips, exercises, recommendations, detailed introductions to all sort of materials. Definitely one of the most useful art tool reference books!

Thank you to the publisher and Netgallery for proving me with a digital ARC for my honest review. Opinions are my own.

This is a comprehensive guide to drawing materials. Includes but is not limited to graphite pencil, pastels, pen and ink, etc... The author provides you with different techniques to use with each medium which is helpful with a beginner. She also provides you with a few beginner tutorials to practice these techniques. I also appreciate an organized table of contents, which also provides hyperlinks to skip to certain sections. Unfortunately some ebook apps make it impossible to utilize the table of contents. I would recommend purchasing this book in it's physical form.

Another interesting book of an introduction for artists to different materials. It is not a long book and a nice introduction. There are a few images I recognized from the support and surfaces book - but I got over it and they can do that. You are also getting comparisons and tips as well. Overall a nice book to have a look at.

This book is less about creating great art than it is about the tools you will need to create great art, and more importantly than the tools, how to use tools to get you the image you're seeking. And it also talks about creating great art - so what's not to like?!

As the title suggests, it covers a range drawing media, from colored and graphite pencils to crayons and crayon-like painting sticks in assorted forms, along with charcoal, vine charcoal, white charcoal, and conte materials, but it doesn't just talk about what's available, it gets into it about how to employ those materials to get the kind of results that will elevate your work to the next level, and it includes advice on how to store those materials to best preserve and protect them to prolong their life.

Since the surface upon which you create your art is also an important tool this area isn't spared attention, so we have a discussion of different materials available, and how your painting materials work on each surface, with some photographic examples of results achieved using different tools on different surfaces.

It goes beyond this as well, with step-by-step instructions on working through several projects for even a beginner to learn to draw effectively, so in short, everything you will need to get a firm grounding in your materials and your technique. I commend this as a comprehensive and useful tool to add to your artistic arsenal.

There is also a list of accessories that can be helpful with learning to draw. Starting with the basics you’ll learn about the different mediums from a basic pencil to artist chalks. From there techniques of each medium is shown with photos and drawings. As you advance through the book there are lessons for shading and contouring. Artist Toolbox: Drawing Tools & Materials is a new book in a series of manuals covering methods and supplies for the visual artist. Released 5th March 2019 by Quarto on the Walter Foster imprint, it's 112 pages and available in paperback and ebook formats.

This is, as the cover states, a practical guide to the essential tools of drawing. The book is laid out in a logical format, with an introduction, a good overview of surfaces and paper finishes (along with sidebars showing how different media work with different surfaces), and then moving along to the different types of drawing materials and tools. The book does not 'shill' for one particular company or product, there are a wide variety of brands of pencils, pastels, crayons, etc shown. The real value of the book for me comes in the following chapters covering drawing techniques and concepts along with 6 tutorial lessons exploring the different techniques. Most of the exercises have the same subject explored using different drawing materials to better illustrate the differences and capabilities of the tools (graphite, crayon, pastel, pen and ink, etc).

This is a no-frills, well written, concise manual for tools and supplies for drawing. It would make a good support book for a beginning drawing course or for self study.

Four stars.
