I don't know how I didn't review this before but holy this was hilarious, MAD magazine never fails to create awesome, hilarious and relatable content.
'Mad about the Trump Era' by MAD Magazine takes a satirical look at President Trump's term in office. At 128 pages, it starts to grate after a while.
Trump makes himself an easy target for this sort of thing with his insane tweets, weird behavior and pompous attitude. MAD makes things even funnier by adding things like his funniest bathroom tweets and Melania paper dolls. Besides Trump, there are jabs at all other folks during this timeframe like Paul Manafort and Vladimir Putin. The book is divided into sections like Covfefe and Fake News.
These are all short gags and fake ads and a few of the famous page fold jokes. The problem is that news humor only lasts so long, and reading this in 2020 may have been my fault. I loved MAD magazine has a kid, and I still think they've got it, though.
I received a review copy of this ebook from DC Entertainment and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
MAD About the Trump Era/error rarely made me laugh. I did chuckle sometimes but mostly I was sad and kind of crushed by reading about the harm Trump has caused.. I read MAD magazine when I was a teenager and loved its quick witted and sarcastic tone as it took on issues related to power, sex, money and the institutions that we are supposed to revere that are, in reality, corrupt.. MAD About the Trump Era has all that and brings us right in to the corruption of Trump's presidency. The art work is MAD style madness and beautiful. I just wish that this MAD book never had to be written..
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to review this book for an honest opinion.
I did not know this book was a sequel to another MAD book: MAD About Trump (link to WorldCat).
That does not matter because this one stands on its own just fine. The book description states the following:
"As we enter the second half of President Donald Trump's interminable, unimpeachable reign, MAD feels it's high time to commemorate our steady slide into annihilation with a brand-new collection of caricature, mockery, and ridicule."
That sums up a lot of the book. The Usual Gang of Idiots is in good form in this collection. The book is divided into five major sections:
Very fine people on both sides
The best people
The witch hunt
Covfefe
Fake News
Inside we get a variety of caricatures and satire on topics such as:
A liberal hopes/a liberal knows (to be honest, this one may not be as much satire as they claim).
2018 President's Summer Reading List
What's in Sean Hannity's desk?
"Tyrant of the Caribbean." (Yes. They did a movie poster parody covering his paper towel throwing in Puerto Rico. I admit I appreciated the fact they did cover this).
Overall, the humor is timely at this moment. The quality of the satire and sketches varies. Some are good, others are average, and one or two are just OK. However, the book does catch a sense of the times we are currently living and the ridiculous nature of it all. We do need to be honest here: some of this may well be just barely satire. Reading this now given current events may feel a bit too real or sting a bit.
In the end, I liked it. Some parts were more amusing than others, and a few hit close to home. Still, if you like MAD, you'll probably like this too. If you read and liked the previous book, you may as well keep going and read this one too. In terms of libraries, this is one mainly for public libraries, specially if you have other MAD books and/or good selections in political humor and pop culture. Oh, and by the way, I really liked the cover on this book too.
MAD's usual gang of idiots aims its ever-sharp satirical sword on the daily depressing dump that is the Trump Era.. So much insightful/inspired material here, from "What's on Sean Hannity's Desk?" to a horrifying Tweeties box to a series of updated movie posters ["Russkie Business'] to a scathing MAD Fold-In. Grins and groans and head-shakes and laughing-to-keep-from-crying content graces every page. Alfred E. Neuman asks "What, me worry?" Anxious [and appreciative] readers reply, "Well, we do!"
MAD About the Trump Era from MAD Magazine is what you expect from the magazine. Perhaps the only real drawback is the fact that the insanity and hatred that is the Trump regime changes so quickly that the jokes about peripheral people, such as Spicer, become dated so quickly.
I can tell from reading this that I have largely moved on from MAD style humor. I found many of the pieces really quite good but they are no longer in my preferred reading style. Not quite juvenile and not quite adult. When I was young that grey area was fun, now I want one or the other.
That said, this delivers exactly what one would expect from MAD. Humor, usually spot-on and clever but not a lot of laugh out loud moments. Certainly anyone with any morals or ethics will enjoy, to some extent, the lampooning of the Trump fiasco. Those with no morals or ethics, in other words Trump supporters, wouldn't enjoy it but that isn't a major problem because many words are more than one syllable so they won't understand it anyway.
If you like MAD and don't like a hateful head of state that targets and scapegoats most people, then you'll likely enjoy this. If not, well, who cares.

If you like Trump, you will want to skip this book. If you hate him, you will love this book! As always, the artwork is colorful and sarcastic. The words have a biting punch to them and can be quite funny at times. However, as any book that tries to write about current events, if you do not get the information out there, then your jokes may be old and stale, which is sometimes the case here.
I mean, who doesn’t love a good Sean Spicer joke?
So I guess, think of this as a historical book showcasing the first year of Trump’s administration. Because lord knows it doesn’t look like this anymore!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an advanced copy to read. All opinions are my own.
Mad About the Trump Era was a pretty funny book. I will admit it was hard to read at times, because of how much truth there was in it. Looking back on some of the crazy things that have been said and done wasn’t always easy. The way they chose to tell it with that good blend of humor and reality did make it easier though. It was definitely one of the funnier Mad magazines I have read in a good while. I can’t say it will be for everyone, but I think some people will enjoy it.
Unfortunately, I was unable to read much of this book due to the downloaded format. I tried on my phone, my Samsung tablet, as well as my Kindle with no luck. The cover appeared perfect, the rest of the book/magazine, not so much. Many pages were just blank black pages. I was extremely let down, as I was excited to read this Satire release. I have enjoyed MAD Magazine for many many years and thought this look on the Trump Era would be incredibly humorous!
I've outgrown MAD. I knew that in my heart, but I thought this would be funny. It just made me a little more sad about the events of the day. Don't get me wrong. It was exactly what MAD is supposed to be. It's just not me anymore. I know people who still love their MAD will love this. And parts were funny to me. It definitely brought me back to what I use to read and love. Perfect for the right audience.
If you're a MAD Magazine fan, you'll like this "book." If you prefer to spend your time reading more edifying materials, you'll want to pass over this quickly. That said, it does take a fair amount of wit and smarts to come up with the amusements in these pages. Nevertheless, we'll pass.
I'll be the first to admit that I haven't picked up a Mad Magazine since I was a kid. When I got the opportunity to read their latest compilation, MAD About the Trump Era, from the publisher, I jumped at the opportunity to revisit the magazine. Even though I am thankful to the publisher for getting a pre-release copy, the following review is all mine.
I was very impressed with the level of political satire that exists in MAD About the Trump Era. I would not have guessed that the satire was as strong and targeted as it was. There is clearly a strong liberal bent to this book, so it may not be everyone's cup of tea. Personally, I found myself laughing audibly a number of times because it's just downright funny.
Ultimately, it's not a long read. I think I completed it in a couple of hours, but it was definitely worth the read. I would highly recommend it to anyone who needs a little laughter to help them get through this presidency.
MAD about the Trump Era has exactly the same feel as the original magazines.
• One overriding belief—check.
• Various writing styles from prose, to parodies, to poetry, to short comics—check.
• Excellent artwork including easily recognizable caricatures of political and pop culture figures—check.
• More clever, and occasionally witty, than laugh-out-loud funny jokes—check.
MAD about the Trump Era definitely brings back memories of making fun of President Nixon. If anything, there is more data to mine for laughs with President Trump. Just his tweets alone could fill an entire book. The jokes are hit and miss—compare them to the sketches on Saturday Night Live. I really enjoyed Captain Red America because it works on a surface level of climate deniers. But there is a deeper self-referential humor in the R on his suit referencing Red Robin of DC Comics, which owns MAD magazine.
Obviously, if you are a MAGA hat wearing staunch supporter of the Donald, this book is not for you. However, it is a nostalgic trip down memory lane for us older democrats (socialists to you, Mein President). 3 stars.
Thanks to MAD Magazine, DC Entertainment, and NetGalley for a copy in exchange for my honest review.
A big thank you to NetGalley and DC Entertainment for the ARC. I am voluntarily reviewing this book. Well I can't really review it as after I downloaded the pdf (which I hate) I got the cover only. The rest is blank totally blank. I tried to download on different devices no luck, I tried changing the orientation no luck. So this was a major fail for me. I hate to but I am rating this a 1 star.
Sometimes, when faced with depressing reality, you just have to laugh. Literally. You have to laugh or you'll go crazy. This book helps you do that. With chapter titles like "The Best People" and "Covfefe," the writers bring humor to the disaster Americans have been living through since Trump was erroneously elected in 2016. I highly recommend to all, but especially those of you who can't afford the therapy needed to survive until 2020.
If you love MAD magazine, you will enjoy the hundreds of cartoons about what is going on with the president in and out of Washington. Take the constant news feeds about what he says or tweets and add humor or, in the case of his non- followers, that humor has a different twist and you may not find it funny, more like irony than humor Picture the political cartoons found on editorial pages of various news articles and put them all in one book. This book is for those who want to pull their hair out when reading the news, not for many of his followers.
Thank you NetGalley for an advance reader copy on exchange for an honest review.
I love MAD. They make fun of ALL Presidents, so don't get bent that they are making fun of Trump if you support Trump. Classic Mad. I still subscribe to the magazine.
This is hilarious and cleverly executed. If you want to laugh and bring some lightness to the current affairs of the leadership in the U.S. grab a copy for your coffee table. The illustrations make me LOL.
This edition of MAD is very enjoyable, it has tons of jokes and sarcasm. Plus the illustrations are super fun to look at. Weather your a fan of trump or not this is a great pick up for you
The protected PDF file was corrupted and so the overwhelming majority of this book could not be read. Based on what little content that was readable, I would give it at least three stars.
