Do you hate it as much as I do when books are nothing like their descriptions? If so do not read this book. I was excited about the funny premise of this novel but was completely let down by the actual book. This book is NOT funny. It’s not humorous or even turn your lips into a smile at least amusing anywhere. The secret mentioned in the description is not a secret to anyone in the book, except for the woman who was cheated on, and it’s revealed to the reader in a very uninteresting past tense aside in conversation right away. I didn’t realize until the end when I saw the author’s previous books listed that this is a series of books. When I looked them up I found out that the infidelity that’s a big deal here happened at the beginning of the series a few books ago. That means everyone knew but this one character. This seems odd to me. It makes so many of the characters unlikeable which isn’t helped by writing that does nothing to make you care about them.
The plot of this novel is the aftermath of this revelation. There is the husband of the wife who has just found he cheated. There is the woman who cheated with him who is supposed to be the main protagonist but is put upon by her mum and best friend and it’s frustrating to watch. Her husband seems to good to be true and it’s his best friend who blabbed the secret and feels awful about it. I did not feel I missed anything by not realizing this was a series. In fact I think it would have been more tedious to know the backstory and be constantly reminded of who everyone is. It’s a morose look at marriage, friendship and family. Unfortunately there is nothing to recommend it.
This is book four in a series, but it doesn't read that way. The author does a nice job of incorporating enough details within the current plot to catch you up on the three previous books. The title works its way in nicely to the plot without seeming forced.
The cast of characters range from annoying to likable, but some of the conversations seem a little forced. I think there was a definite path the author wanted to take with the plot, but the conversation didn't really make it a smooth ride.
I felt really sorry for Alison, seeing that everyone in the world seemed to know about her husband's affair except her. This is the part of the book that I didn't care for, however, because everyone just expected Alison to forgive Matthew's indiscretion, but, I don't think that's real life.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and may pick up the previous three in my spare time. Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC. All thoughts are my own.
In Katy’s opinion, weddings should follow some basic rules:
1) No-one should ever have sex. Of course. The married couple has the rest of their lives for that, and the guests should be too busy partying.
2) If you are heavily pregnant (as Katy is) you should obviously not be invited to three weddings in the space of one summer. Your husband’s accident-prone best friend, your attention-seeking colleague, your 73-year-old mother’s marriage to her Spanish toy boy – all without even an alcoholic drink to make them bearable.
3) During the speeches, it should not be revealed that you had a secret one-night-stand with one of the other guests.
4) Instead of laying bets on the length of the best man’s speech, guests should not be laying bets on whether a marriage will be in ruins before the end of the meal…
But this summer, Katy is lucky enough to be the special guest at the weddings that break ALL of the rules. What could possibly go wrong?
This is actually book four in the series. I haven’t read any of the other books. This could be read as a stand-alone book. This is an easy read book. I did enjoy it and found it easy to pick up and put down, and be able to follow the story. It was cringe worthy and heart warming in places, and sometimes I wanted to shout at Katy to grow a pair!
Thanks for the advanced copy netgally
First, I need to mention that I didn’t realise this was a series until I started reading. This caused me some confusion as I didn’t know the backstories; this may have caused it to lose a star.
The premis was enjoyable, but it all felt cliched; smart friend who has a hard time understanding emotions and says the wrong things? Check. Understanding good guy? Check. Guy who made a mistake, but then has a sudden realization? Check. Over the top gay bestie? Check.
Also, these characters annoyed me.
It was enjoyable to revisit old friends, but I would have liked a much stronger central romance to root for.
I really enjoyed the first of Bloom’s books when I read it years ago, and as such I really looked forward to reading this one.
As I couldn’t remember much about the first story, I felt like I was coming in fresh to this one. No worries - it works as a stand-alone as it explains the background to the story well. Great.
Sadly, however, I didn’t find it compelling or realistic. I certainly didn’t find it hilarious. It passed time and I read it, but it’s not a book I can wholeheartedly recommend.
A funny, heartwarming, and enjoyable read.
I loved the plot, the characters and the brilliant style of writing.
I will surely read other books by this author.
Highly recommended!
Many thanks to Bookouture and Netgalley for this ARC. I voluntarily read and reviewed this book, all opinions are mine.
Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for an honest review. I did not realize this book was the 4th in a series, but Bloom was so great and the character descriptions that I had no idea until I finished the book! When I first started the book I thought I wasn't going to finish it. I felt it started off as a bit childish the way it was written. The character being nicknamed Braindead was obviously accurate but the constant reference of that nickname was getting tiresome. Some could have called him by his given name. That was my only real gripe about this book. The story itself was lovely.....being that marriage is hard work and forgiveness is also needed in marriage. The friendships of the characters felt real as well. I really enjoyed this novel and definitely will read Bloom's other books.
I read Tracy Bloom’s ‘Dinner’ Party’ and fell in love with the author’s writing.
The title of this book grabbed my attention. It made me chuckle as it reminded me of my wedding night last month. I was so beat, dead on my feet; almost fell asleep in the shower. Needless to say, expensive hotel and new lingerie notwithstanding, sleep won. So, does anyone have sex at weddings?
This book introduces us to a small group of friends. Braindead and Abby are getting married. Ben and his wife, Katy, have a role to play at the wedding. Mathew and Alison were guests invited by Craig. This was a terrible idea because their presence led to a catastrophe at the wedding. Apart from the three, there is also Daniel and Gabriel who are a couple and then Craig’s sister, Erica and Mathew’s friend, Ian. This may seem like too many characters but they aren’t. Some play minor roles while others like Katy and Mathew are in the lead roles. In addition, the author portrays them so uniquely that you won’t get confused about who is who. If anything, I feel like I knew all of them, I wanted to be friends with them.
This story is relatable. There are so many times that I felt like the author described scenes and emotions that I didn’t have the words for. For instance, she talks about how weddings reveal who we are, who our friends are and where different people stand in our lives. There are friends that I could have sworn had my back 100% before the wedding. Sadly, I even lost a close friend two weeks before my wedding. Anyway, I digress. Let me just say though, Tracy really did capture the mood and reality of weddings from the joy to the nervousness and all the other drama.
This story was also hilarious without trying too hard. There were a couple of scenes that had me laughing out loud. I must have won a goofy smile while reading some of the chapters.
On the other side, this isn’t a fluffy read. Yes, it will make you laugh but it might also make you cry. The story looks at different issues in marriages, one of them being forgiveness. At what cost does forgiveness come? I also enjoyed the theme of friendship and how it was portrayed by different pairs. We all need genuine friendships.
As you can tell by now, I enjoyed this book. No-one ever has sex at a wedding by Tracy Bloom is well-written, funny, engrossing, relatable and will also tug at your heartstrings. It is also quite memorable. I will be thinking about the characters for a long time.
This book is laugh-out-loud funny and a lighthearted read! A literal circus of a book but a frothy fun way to spend an evening. This was my first Bloom book, but it won't be my last. I understand it is part of a series, but I didn't feel that I needed to read the others prior to this one in order to follow and enjoy the story. Although the title may be a bit racy for some, it is all rather tongue-in-cheek. For fans of Sophie Kinsella.
Another absolutely fabulous book in this always entertaining series. I couldn't put this down and read it in about 3 hours flat, while jetlagged, and was completely amused by all of it.
It was a sheer pleasure to be among the antics of Katy, Ben, Matthew, Alison, Braindead and Daniel, in a book featuring 3 weddings, some fairly memorable speeches and moments. Some utter hilarity and also some rather touching moments.
If you have never read a No-One Has Sex Book before, then besides missing out on a fabulous series, you should be reassured to know most of the key plot points from them are revised briefly during this story, as the first disastrous speech take in an ongoing story from the first book in the series. I'm too deep into my enjoyment of the series to objectively state if it can be read as a standalone, but why miss out on hours of enjoyment?
There was nothing that I didn't like in this book, it was fabulous. The story is very easy to follow and flows smoothly. The writing is entertaining, the dialogue witty. I loved the chapters focusing on different characters, all with headers to make it clear who you are with. It was great to see a bit more into the minds of the men in this series.
Braindead really is just that at times, and it is he who has some of the best lines of the book, I love this guy, even if his mouth and brain never seem to connect to each other!
I can't get over how much this book just hit the right spot for me, made me forget that I was feeling iffy, and I was able to get completely into the story. Easily my favourite book from Tracy Bloom so far.
Thank you to Netgalley and Bookouture for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
This book was every bit as enjoyable as Tracy’s others and contains lots of characters we have already met too, which is a bonus as it’s always good to see what they are up to now!
This one is a little “four weddings” and follows a series of connected weddings across the year, starting with Braindeads wedding. And therein is my only dislike of this book. Brain dead wasn’t and isn’t a good name for a character and I think to not allow him to grow out of it and revert back to Craig is a mistake.
Nonetheless, this book is funny, enjoyable and can be read as a stand-alone or part of the series. Tracy has done it again!
Cute but definitely not hilarious
The title of the book in part is “An absolutely hilarious romantic comedy”. This in my opinion is incorrect. It wasn’t hilarious and it the intended humor didn’t work. Some of the characters were so annoying I wanted to throw the book against the wall. I also didn’t like the ending which I thought went overboard. But the plot was interesting enough that I wanted to see how the story ended. I also liked some of the characters and that kept me going through the book.
No One Ever Has Sex at a Wedding is most definitely a funny book. It tells the story of a group of friends who attend a wedding, only to have a marital indiscretion revealed during one of the wedding speeches. What ensues is a wild ride about the aftermath of this revelation, told from multiple points of view.
While I really enjoyed the writing style, and the humor throughout the book, I personally had some difficulty enjoying the main storyline - that one of the characters cheated on his wife and attempted to hide that from her for years. He even continues to lie about it after the speech is given, and much of the book focuses on his attempts to win her back.
I would check out another book by this author in the future, because I really believe this is a storyline issue for me. I received an ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review, and I am glad I did because I laughed a lot while reading this book!
No-One Ever Has Sex at a Wedding is the first book I have read by Tracy Bloom and I was delightfully surprised by how much I enjoyed it. I was not aware until about a quarter ways through the book that this is book four in a series, but the author did a good job introducing the characters to new readers. Do I think that I would have enjoyed this more if I knew everyone’s backstories? Yes, but the characters were engaging in their own right and I even found myself thinking about them when I was not reading. This in itself tells me that the characters are well written. The plot seemed to play out like an episode of How I Met Your Mother and was somewhat predictable, but that is to be expected in the genre.
Shenanigans, fun and lots of giggles! A great example of friendship, sticking together through thick and thin. It's the first one of the series I've read so I clearly missed some things.
Braindead is my favourite (and Ben for being such a great husband) , I too, do not have a filter and say weird stuff.
Their conflict resolution skills aren't the best but they try!
The message of the book is clear: what marriage is about.
Is it bad that it makes me want to go to a wedding?
Unfortunately I have not read the other books in this series so I was a little lost. However it's a fun light read with some added cheekiness. If you were a fan of Sex and the City, you'll more than likely enjoy this book.
HIlarious, quirky, fast-paced; Bloom's novel is pure chick-lit from beginning to end, contemporary and lovely.
