This is one of my favorite cozy mystery series and I always eagerly await the next installment. I'm happy to say this one didn't disappoint!
Briar Creek librarian Lindsey Norris is planning her upcoming wedding to the man of her dreams. Unfortunately, a new library patron has taken an inappropriate interest in Lindsey, making things very uncomfortable for her. When the man winds up dead, things look grim for Lindsey's fiance Sully. Can Lindsey and her friends figure out who the real killer is before more people wind up hurt?
Another excellent cozy mystery from one of my favorite authors in the genre! I will admit that this one had me on the edge of my seat. Lindsey's stalker was super creepy and definitely me nervous. As usual, it's the characters in this book and their relationships that make it so good, and I loved how Lindsey's people rallied around her and Sully. And! The ending! Let's just say Mayor Lemon gets my vote. :)
Word to the Wise is a really satisfying whodunit. First off, Aaron Grady is creepy as hell. He's suddenly just there, watching Lindsey, all the time, giving her flowers, staring into her office, sending her notes about her wedding dress choices. The library board and town's reaction is predictable and sad in that they do nothing to protect Lindsey and the library staff's safety. The consequences of this will likely play out in future books as well.
When Grady is murdered, Sully becomes the main suspect for a number of reasons. Emma has to do this by the book and it gets more complicated when Sully's gun is found at the scene. Lindsey puts her investigative hat on and starts doing her own research into Grady's background with Robby's assistance. She's not the first person Grady stalked, and a previous victim isn't far away. Are they the killer? Who else could have it out for Grady, if he just moved to town? His widow isn't shy in labeling Lindsey a home wrecker and blaming her for Grady's stalking. There is so much blame on Lindsey for Grady's actions so any supporters are a beacon of trust amidst the fear she feels. The ripple effect throughout her and Scully's lives and how they have to change so Lindsey can be safe from Grady and then to prevent Scully from being falsely arrested is a sober contrast to the joy of planning their wedding.
There are lighter moments throughout the book. I love that their family and friends have various (accurate) bets on how this is going. For McKinlay fans who follow her on social media, there's a shout out to bad breakfast choices! As an avid Say Yes to the Dress fan, the choosing of the dress is a lovely scene. The story is well balanced between the mystery of Grady's death and who is framing Sully, finding out about Grady's past, and moving forward with their future via the wedding planning. I did not want to put it down and the ending was really satisfying in wrapping up the various threads.
Word to the Wise is a treat for cozy mystery fans, regardless if they're new or longtime readers of the series.
I enjoy this series. The character of Aaron was extremely creepy. I thoroughly enjoyed the twist at the end. Can't wait to read the next in the series.
I received an ARC from netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
I'm always happy to return to Briar Creek to visit with Lindsay and the other characters in the Library Lover's Mystery series! This book was a bit different than the others in the series as it addressed issues related to the #MeToo movement. I recommend for fans of the series, but you could jump into the series here and it would still make sense.
I really enjoy this series. The characters are interesting, the setting is enjoyable and the mystery keeps me guessing. I like Lindsey's relationship to her friends and to Sully. The inappropriateness of Aaron and it not being taken seriously is something many women can relate to.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review. - I love this series.
I love this series! As a librarian, I find the details about Libraryland very accurate and I enjoy the stories very much. The characters are relatable and you care what happens to them. I love watching Sully and Lindsay's relationship grow. I like how the mysteries aren't easy to figure out and Lindsay doesn't stick her nose in the investigation as much as some do in these type of books (she actually tells the police when she finds clues). I look forward to the next one (and the wedding)!
Awesome cozy mystery. Although it us a sequel, it can be read as a stand alone. Characters are quickly introduced in the first 30 pages. Has several unexpected twists that keep the reader guessing.
This is the newest entry in a delightful series about librarian Lindsey and her boat captain fiance Sully. The small town library and coastal community setting is well-drawn and the cast of characters are a lot of fun. This one probably would be fine as a standalone, but as always, reading the previous books adds a lot to the enjoyment and background.
This is a bit more serious than some, as Lindsey has a very unwelcome stalker and the author communicates the creepiness and fear of the situation. A new town resident is fixated on Lindsey and stares at her at work, brings her unwelcome presents, and even shows up at her house after hours. The scene where she receives a text from him while she is trying on wedding gowns is frightening.
Lindsey, Sully, and the stalker have a very public confrontation one evening at a restaurant. So, when the creep is found murdered on library grounds, Lindsey and Sully become prime suspects. They mystery is interesting and these are always enjoyable reads. I recommend this series to cozy fans. Thanks to the publisher and to Net Galley for providing me with an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Although I hadn't read the previous 9 books in this series, I got caught up in the story. The story moved right along, and the characters were delightful, except for the stalker, of course. I would definitely read another book by this author.
WORD TO THE WISE is the tenth book of the Library Lover’s Mystery series. Compared to Jenn Mckinlay’s other books, I do find that this one has a more serious feel to it. While it does have it’s charming moments, it’s not nearly as playful as some of her other books have been. I find that this is due to Lindsey’s personality.
This is totally fine. I like having different characters in different series because otherwise all the books would feel too similar. However, I do tend to prefer McKinlay’s more playful style.
The premise of this book involves a stalker. Aaron Grady approached Lindsay, asking help for tips on gardening and so after she gave him some books, he started becoming overly nice to her. Sending her thank-yous and flowers was one thing, but when he shows up at her house uninvited, it starts to freak her out.
When Aaron winds up dead, Sully, her fiancé is blamed. Now Lindsey must find out who the real culprit is and it turns out to be a wild ride as she discovers who Aaron really is.
While the premise seems very interesting, I really wasn’t a fan of the stalker storyline. It moved too slow in the beginning of the book, so I found myself losing interest far too quickly. I would’ve liked to see a more tighter pace and have the murder occur earlier. Some of the scenes weren’t all that necessary and dragged the book down.
So while I did like aspects of this book, there was a lot of be desired. I’m hoping that in the next one there will be a tighter plotline.
Wow! The best book in the series. While is seemed obvious early on who the killer was, the twists and turns in character and plot were fantastic.
Another winner in one of my favorite cozy series.

Lindsey Norris, Director of the Briar Creek Library, yet again finds herself with a dead body and a mystery to solve. This time however, she deals with a problem librarians have been facing for decades, a stalker. I really appreciated the way McKinlay brings this issue to light, and shows how females have to deal with this difficult situation. Yet again the citizens of Briar Creek need to come together to get this murder solved. This book really hooked me, and I read it in one sitting. Five stars for Jenn McKinlay’s latest book.
I told myself I was going to read one chapter before bed and next thing I knew I had finished the book.
One might worry that you'd tire of the series by book 10 but there's just something about this series that keeps me wanting more. Perhaps it's because I can relate to the library world (not the ability to repeatedly find dead bodies...can't say I've ever found a dead body). I love the setting and the characters too.
